Just six Gameweeks remain in the 2010/11 Premier League season and, as “squeaky bum time” approaches, teams begin to catch up on those fixtures rescheduled from early year congestion. With their euphoric Carling Cup run, Birmingham have been playing much of the second half of the season with a game in hand but Gameweek 33 will finally see them pull alongside the rest of the pack by playing two Premier League matches, in what could be a pivotal five day period for their top-flight survival chances.

Alex McLeish’s side currently hold 35 Premier League points and sit 16th in the league, with just 4 points separating themselves from bottom club Wigan Athletic. But the league is so tightly balanced that, theoretically, anyone from ninth-placed Newcastle downwards could still fall through the relegation trap door.

The Prospects

Other than Wigan, Birmingham have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, averaging just one goal per game (31). Although significantly better than their fellow relegation strugglers, the club’s Goals Against column in the Premier League table doesn’t make up for their lacklustre finishing and they currently hold a poor goal difference (-12). The Blues are not in the best of form, with just 1 win in their last 6 Premier League outings, a run Big Eck will be urgently looking to improve.

The first of the two clashes, which sees them play host to Sunderland, is undoubtedly the more attractive of the pair. The Blues have performed better at St Andrews than on their travels this season, picking up 22 of their 35 points on home soil. Sunderland are just 3 points better off than Birmingham and are suffering an extreme loss of form, suffering defeat in 7 of their last 8 fixtures. This barren patch could work in Birmingham’s favour, although Steve Bruce and co will be looking to secure their Premier League status and prove their worth.

What makes this first game of the double so crucial is Birmingham then travel down the M40 in midweek to face Chelsea. Knocked out of Europe and all but out of the title race, Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s most realistic focus is to finish second in the Premier League – on paper their season is pretty much over. But Ancelotti will be wanting to keep his job and players such as Fernando Torres definitely have something to prove – a trip to Stamford Bridge is always going to be difficult.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper Ben Foster is always a solid choice between the posts and 25% of Fantasy Premier League Managers have noticed. The England international is in good form at the moment and, before the 1-1 draw with Blackburn, he had made 28 saves in 3 games. Priced at 5.3 on the FPL, there are certainly cheaper options out there but Foster’s return of 129 for the season proves his reliability and worth.

In the Birmingham defence we have Fantasy favourites Roger Johnson (5.3) and Liam Ridgewell (5.5) – both of whom hold around 11% ownership. These guys are solid choices who can occasionally chip in with the odd goal; Ridgewell has found the back of the net 4 times this season. Johnson has the heart of the bonus point judges though and may be the wiser choice – he has fetched 20 this term and 6 in his last 4 games. Johnson was struggling with a slight knock and managed just 45 minutes against Blackburn last week, but McLeish has since quelled any fears by stating the centre half should be ready for this weekend.

Craig Gardner is the Blues’ top goal scorer this season in the Premier League with 6 and priced at 4.9 he offers a bargain midfield option, particularly with his penalty duties. David Bentley could be worth a look at if he recovers from his groin injury in time but apart from that, it really is slim pickings in the Birmingham midfield for Fantasy Managers. There’s the cheap valuation of the likes of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson – but they don’t offer much more.

The most in-form striker is currently Cameron Jerome, who has returned a respectable 2 assists and one Bonus Point in the last 2 games. Not someone to get overly excited about, he should, nevertheless, start both fixtures and is fairly budget at 5.5. Nikola Zigic is a slightly better shout, but a groin injury has meant that he hasn’t started any of the last 5 fixtures and he is unlikely to feature predominantly in both outings.

Cheeky Punt

Who doesn’t want Kevin Phillips to do well these days? The 37 year old Premier League veteran has recently found himself back amongst the first team, starting the last 2 matches and scoring against Bolton. Although 2 games in the space of 5 days might be too much, couldn’t you half imagine him bagging a goal against former club Sunderland? Priced at 4.1 on the FPL, he would free up funds for big money purchases.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Guys, need some advice please….Current team:

    Foster Al-Habsi
    Vidic Luiz Coleman Kelly Walker
    Barton Nani Fabregas VDV Adam
    RVP Odemwingie Tevez

    Should I do:

    A) VDV and Tevez to Lampard and Carroll

(If I do this I will keep Barton on my bench for next two weeks)

    or

    B) Barton and Tevez to Lampard and Hoilett

(If I do this I will keep Hoilett on my bench for next two weeks)

N.B. Doing A would allow me to possibly do Al-Habsi to Begovic and Odemwingie to Zamora, I wouldn’t be able to do that with B

    Who am I?

I was born in South Africa in 1960. When I was 15 Middlesbrough took me on trial and I went on to score 16 goals in 64 games before joining Liverpool in 1981. I made 190 appearances for Liverpool before retiring. I went on to design and create the now famous Adidas Predator boot.

    LAST ONE TONIGHT!

I always knew I was going to be a goalscoring sensation since my birth in Paraguay in 1965.

Early marksmanship at provincial paraguayan clubs got me a sought after transfer to the giddy heights of La Liga with Zaragoza where I spent 3 very successful years.

South America called again after my stint in Iberia with my most prolific goalscoring record coming in the Argentinian Apetura league.

Europe lured me back in the early noughties before a stint back home.

I have represented my country at the highest level.

    who am I?

    League or cup?
I'm about 35 points off top two in my mini league. 2nd pays £75, 1st is £200. I'm also in a mini league cup final (£50 for winner), 2 legs over gw34 and 35. However transfer -4's only count in those 2 gw's. So my cup opponent can change his whole team this week and the hits won't effect him as he has no chance in the league.
Should I take a bunch of hits this week to try to win the cup or no hits and go for league? I have no dgw's in gw34 atm, team is better suited for this week. Should I just forget the cup?

    WHO AM I?

I was born in the 20's in Brazil. A powerful and fast beast of a striker who could strike a ball with both feet.

At the early stage of my career, i was originally a left winger, with sublime skill and finishing to match.

Started my club career in the city of my birth, Rio di janeiro. I had 2 great spells at this club scoring a total of 302 goals in 11 fruitful years, where i won 5 Rio state league championships.

As a brazil international, i was regarded as one of the best strikers the brazil national team had ever had, competing in 5 copa americas and a world cup to boot where i was the top scorer with 9 goals.

    Who am i?

p.s. Sorry in advance if this isn't as good as the quality of posts from the stock and Atb tonight

A bit of a selection headache, any help would be appreciated! Who would you bench out of Beckford, Nani, VDV or Young?? On the face of it Beckford, but he has an easy game (BLA).

I have a similar conundrum but replce Young with Mereiles. I'm definately playing Beckford with the fixture, everton's relative reliance on him for goals and good form.

Nani I can't face leaving out, so I'm stuck between VDV and Mereiles/Young. Everything is telling me VDV but just have that nagging voice telling me he'll blow up vs Arsenal in a 4-4 thriller.

I'd go for young, I fancy West Ham to come away with a win this week considering their good form especially at home before the United 2nd half. And Villa have by all accounts been abysmal this season.

Additionally Young may be played out wide again where he is less effective. Beckford I fancy to at least grab a goal.

I've given up on West Ham personally. They're playing the likes of Noble and O'Neil on the right side. And leaving studs like Obinna on the bench and Der Hammer with no service on the left side. I can see the midfield withering and/or a da Costa bringing somebody down in the box (after I've shopped Young of course).

there's no way you got to the end of a quiz. you've normally:

                  b) been banned
                  c) been distracted by dinner

I just kept returning. I did QUIT as well as get BANNED twice, and missed the start for DINNER.

I actually got banned for a third team for accusing Demi of cheating. Which I stand by. This is guy who cheated only a month ago, admitting to doing so by saying that he knew he wasn't going to get any answers ahead of us (or words to that effect), and who now is getting more correct answers than anyone else. Extremely dodgy.

    Who Am I?

I was born in 1974 in the Basque region of Spain.

I began my career in Segunda División B before playing for nearly a decade in La Liga. I then moved to the Premier League after a successful loan spell where I became a firm fan's favourite. I spent the twilight of my career in the Championship and then Cyprus.

I have 4 international caps and a league title among other honours to my name.

They initially say 'no'. Then they reveal that that was actually a joke, and say 'yes'. Basic stuff, it works in a similar way to 'NOT' jokes.

          It's surely a no brainer...

13, 9 and 5 in the last 3 weeks (yes I do know them by heart...), he effectively gives you a 4th striker but you get midfielder goal scores, a player who is guaranteed game time, has got a DGW vs Villa and Wolves who are both sh*te before Blackpool the next week.

How much for this supreme fantasy prospect? 10m I hear you say? 8? 7? No, he's all yours for 5.5m.

If that's not enough he is owned by 0.1% (I also know this by heart), the perfect differential.

          😀

      Yeah, Terry will play.

Wait for concrete news on Coleman, but I'd try to keep with the good fixture he has this week - unless he's ruled out of course. Walker doesn't exactly have a great fixture this week anyway, I'd never want to play him away from home.

Could be worth bringing Djourou in for Simpson, again assuming that he's definitely fit. I know that Arsenal don't have the easiest games after the double, but Djourou's FPL record this season has been phenomenal.

      Epic fail...

      Ill try again

      Who Am I?

I was born 1 year after the second world war (a number that would later haunt me)

I spent almost my entire career in London apart from my 1 appearance in Ireland for my last professional game. However the number 1 would put my name in the history books for other reasons.

I later went on to manage a whole host of clubs, including two of my former clubs, until 2008.
