Just six Gameweeks remain in the 2010/11 Premier League season and, as “squeaky bum time” approaches, teams begin to catch up on those fixtures rescheduled from early year congestion. With their euphoric Carling Cup run, Birmingham have been playing much of the second half of the season with a game in hand but Gameweek 33 will finally see them pull alongside the rest of the pack by playing two Premier League matches, in what could be a pivotal five day period for their top-flight survival chances.

Alex McLeish’s side currently hold 35 Premier League points and sit 16th in the league, with just 4 points separating themselves from bottom club Wigan Athletic. But the league is so tightly balanced that, theoretically, anyone from ninth-placed Newcastle downwards could still fall through the relegation trap door.

The Prospects

Other than Wigan, Birmingham have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, averaging just one goal per game (31). Although significantly better than their fellow relegation strugglers, the club’s Goals Against column in the Premier League table doesn’t make up for their lacklustre finishing and they currently hold a poor goal difference (-12). The Blues are not in the best of form, with just 1 win in their last 6 Premier League outings, a run Big Eck will be urgently looking to improve.

The first of the two clashes, which sees them play host to Sunderland, is undoubtedly the more attractive of the pair. The Blues have performed better at St Andrews than on their travels this season, picking up 22 of their 35 points on home soil. Sunderland are just 3 points better off than Birmingham and are suffering an extreme loss of form, suffering defeat in 7 of their last 8 fixtures. This barren patch could work in Birmingham’s favour, although Steve Bruce and co will be looking to secure their Premier League status and prove their worth.

What makes this first game of the double so crucial is Birmingham then travel down the M40 in midweek to face Chelsea. Knocked out of Europe and all but out of the title race, Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s most realistic focus is to finish second in the Premier League – on paper their season is pretty much over. But Ancelotti will be wanting to keep his job and players such as Fernando Torres definitely have something to prove – a trip to Stamford Bridge is always going to be difficult.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper Ben Foster is always a solid choice between the posts and 25% of Fantasy Premier League Managers have noticed. The England international is in good form at the moment and, before the 1-1 draw with Blackburn, he had made 28 saves in 3 games. Priced at 5.3 on the FPL, there are certainly cheaper options out there but Foster’s return of 129 for the season proves his reliability and worth.

In the Birmingham defence we have Fantasy favourites Roger Johnson (5.3) and Liam Ridgewell (5.5) – both of whom hold around 11% ownership. These guys are solid choices who can occasionally chip in with the odd goal; Ridgewell has found the back of the net 4 times this season. Johnson has the heart of the bonus point judges though and may be the wiser choice – he has fetched 20 this term and 6 in his last 4 games. Johnson was struggling with a slight knock and managed just 45 minutes against Blackburn last week, but McLeish has since quelled any fears by stating the centre half should be ready for this weekend.

Craig Gardner is the Blues’ top goal scorer this season in the Premier League with 6 and priced at 4.9 he offers a bargain midfield option, particularly with his penalty duties. David Bentley could be worth a look at if he recovers from his groin injury in time but apart from that, it really is slim pickings in the Birmingham midfield for Fantasy Managers. There’s the cheap valuation of the likes of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson – but they don’t offer much more.

The most in-form striker is currently Cameron Jerome, who has returned a respectable 2 assists and one Bonus Point in the last 2 games. Not someone to get overly excited about, he should, nevertheless, start both fixtures and is fairly budget at 5.5. Nikola Zigic is a slightly better shout, but a groin injury has meant that he hasn’t started any of the last 5 fixtures and he is unlikely to feature predominantly in both outings.

Cheeky Punt

Who doesn’t want Kevin Phillips to do well these days? The 37 year old Premier League veteran has recently found himself back amongst the first team, starting the last 2 matches and scoring against Bolton. Although 2 games in the space of 5 days might be too much, couldn’t you half imagine him bagging a goal against former club Sunderland? Priced at 4.1 on the FPL, he would free up funds for big money purchases.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

            Yeah I'm not a fan, but hard to argue against their upcoming 5 fixtures. Similar double and identical away fixtures as Fulham, but have WBA and BLA rather than Fulham's ARS and LIV...If going Wolves, any better options than O'Hara?

    I feel like benching coleman at home to blackburn is a bad idea... could get both attacking and defensive points...

    I also feel that Bale likes the bigger games so home to Arsenal is a great game for him, plus he looked good against madrid.

    Which striker are people bringing in next week - Sturridge or Zamora? I presume these are the two main options.

    - both have doubles but Sturridge has more difficult fixtures with ARS & ful compared to Zamora who's got wol & BOL
    - Following the DGW though I'd say Sturridge's fixtures are better particularly with a potentially lucrative match at blp
    - both are in a real purple patch as well
    - what makes me lean *slightly* towards Bobby is his consistency - he has 8 apps this season incl subs and has scored goals, assists or bonus in 6/8 incl 3 of the last 4

      i've already written kenwyn so i will say it again, i just think the fixtures and his form will be huge

      - stoke fixtures are avl/WOL then blp. thats a lot of goal potential, yes villa kept a cleansheet by boring newc to death but stoke have more potential to score than newc did

      personally i'm going zamora and k.jones, 4 matches i must get something. then i will get suarez in and kolarov

        Walters is playing up front alongside Kenwyne and listed as a midfielder in fantasy. Think he'll be my Stoke coverage, with Zamora or Sturridge coming in for Zigic. Welbeck is my other cheap striker who as of now I plan to keep due to Sunderland's fixtures.

    Terry or Ivanovic in for Huth and a 4 point hit?

    Yeah Huth has a double next week but I'm taking one week at a time and thinking about the 12 points one of the above can get.

    Think is they have both played the same number of minutes practically this season. 20 min difference so who is more certain to play both games or at least start both games.

      terry almost certainly won't be rested

      ivanovic will no way play centre-back and he probably will be rotated with bosingwa imo

      if both played though i'd go ivanovic because of attacking returns, though terry can still score

      long story short - terry

    Totally screwed and pissed by Kelly dropping again! I can no longer bring in Walker or Djourou...in need of one more starter seeing how starting Barton and Odem prob isn't a good idea.

    Little help please...holding on to a 3 pt lead in my mini league.

    1)Worth a punt on Watson of Cleverly? would need to send Barton out...

    2)Suck it up and a start either Barton or Odem

      if coleman plays your def looks good, if he doesnt you only have 2 defenders. your def could be a problem but it will be ok for next week at least.

      odem has a chance to score, and so does barton you wouldn't have them in your team otherwise

      anyone playing vs blackpool is a good idea imo, but do you really want to hold onto them. anyway barton is playing away to blp the week after, so your no better off tbh

    not at all surprised to see odemwingie in your team! Sturridge is 'on fire' too... His run of good form goes back further.

    OK, he had a couple of games without a goal, during which he had more shots on target than anyone on the pitch, and goalkeepers put in great displays

    With his double, he's a better pick than odem in my opinion

    Is this team good enough for poinntage this week or should I take an 8 point hit and do Huth, A Young > Terry, Walcott?

    Foster, (Bergovic)

    Smalling, Luiz, R Johnson, (Huth), (Walker)

    Nani, Nasri, Lampard (c), A Young, Adam

    RVP, Rooneh, (Welbeck)

    Thinking that if I make the changes this week then it will mean I have to take more hits the week after to get Dempsey, Huth and Sturridge back in the team. That's 16 points of hits in 2 weeks and nothing to say that Smalling won't get a 6 this week and A Young won't get a goal too.

    What a pickle!

      Not sure about removing huth just before double in 34 and game against blackpool (Where he might well score a goal)

      Good team for gw 33 i think.

      If you want to do anything, get rid of smalling (rio back)or/and young (who isn't playing as a supporting forward anymore)

      Personally i also think nani is a rotation risk, but can fully understand why you wouldnt want to get rid (not having him scares me a lot!)

        Yeah, that is the thinking. Thanks.

        My GW34 transfers are A Young, Welbeck > Dempsey, Sturridge so only a 4 point hit. The week after I am thinking of doing Nani to Valencia but like you say not having him scares me especially when eveyone in my mini league has him.

        Yeah that is my thinking. If only I could swap him straight for Downing without a hit I'd do it in a second. Want one of them for the rest of the season and Downing gives me more cash to spend elsewhere...

    Right lads team is setup as

    Foster, Begovic
    Evra, Huth, Simpson, Coleman, Luiz
    Nani, Adam, Nasri, VDV, Nolan
    Tevez, RVP, Suarez

    Thinking of taking a 4 point hit to do
    VDV -> Lampard
    Nolan -> Walcott
    Tevez -> Sturridge

    Yay or Nay?

      Guess you have to do the Tevez to Sturridge to afford the other 2 transfers right? Looks good to me.

      Wouldn't it be awesome if you could transfer over any cash above £100m to the following season providing you stuck with the same team details....most people have been playing for years and will continue playing so it would be good seeing as your history of performance continues if your surplus cash continued.

        Not really, I think it's good to have a fresh start and a level playing field each year!

        It's bad enough when you get to March and feel like you had a bad season and can't wait til next season's new start.

        Imagine if your rivals also gained a few million on you!

      Dgw, regular starter, I'd never bench him personally - Almost guaranteed 4 points and might get lucky with bonus or a rare assist. Must be someone else benchable?

      No, Ferguson will surely get 5 pts plus some bonus chance. Young will have to score a goal to match and I am not too hopeful. I am playing both in my team however.

    2 Questions:

    1:

    A) Coleman & VDV -> Terry & Adam (no hit),
    B) Coleman, VDV & Nani -> Terry, Adam & Malouda (4 point hit), or
    C) Coleman, Kolarov & Zigic -> Terry, Walker & DJ (4 point)

    2: Zigic holders - you keeping & starting him or getting rid this week?
