As Alex Ferguson served the last game of his touchline ban, Man United dropped a couple of points to breathe life back into the title race and give Arsenal hope ahead of tonight’s crucial North London derby.

Newcastle become only the fourth side in the history of the Premier League to stay undefeated at home against the so-called “Big Four” in a season following promotion and now sit comfortably in ninth place on 40 points, with ample respite above the drop zone; mission accomplished for the Magpies. Here’s the lowdown on last night’s game…

Toon Returns
A knee injury kept Steve Harper out of the Newcastle starting XI, allowing Tim Krul to take his place between the sticks for the first time since gameweek 20. Shola Ameobi also made it back into first-team action, joining Peter Lovenkrands up front in a game where both sides matched up with 4-4-2 formations.

Chiek Tiote came back after a two game suspension and picked up his obligatory yellow card, the eleventh of this, his debut season. On-loan Aston Villa man Stephen Ireland finally made his Newcastle bow, coming on for Lovenkrands with just over twenty minutes of the game left.

No Nolan, No Goals
For the first time this season, Newcastle failed to score in consecutive games and it’s perhaps no coincidence that this should occur with club captain Kevin Nolan serving a two-match suspension. The midfielder picked up his tenth yellow card of the season against Wolves in gameweek 31, signing off with a goal in the 4-1 home romp. Thankfully for Alan Pardew, Nolan is now available for the weekend trip to Blackpool, a game that virtually guarantees goals and will put Nolan back on our Fantasy redars.

With thirty six goals scored at St James Park, Pardew’s side went into the game as the second-highest scoring home side in the league and this was the first time they have failed to score in front of their own supporters since gameweek 13.

Smalling Back
Having started in the weekend FA Cup Semi Final defeat to Man City, Rio Ferdinand missed out with a calf injury, allowing Chris Smalling back into the United starting XI. The youngster has played every minute of United’s last eight league games now, with this their third clean sheet in the last four matches. Smalling bagged 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for good measure, picking up 8 points on the night and is proving great value for his 4.5 price. With United’s Champions League campaign still very much alive, Smalling could yet earn further starts and Fantasy returns – United face Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday – three days later they travel to Germany to face Schalke in the semi-final first leg. Rest and rotation could be in evidence this weekend then with Smalling in line to benefit again.

United Refresh the Wings
Indeed rotation is integral to keeping the squad fresh and last night saw Ryan Giggs and Nani as United’s wide men. Antonio Valencia had started the previous three league games and, having also made the first XI on Saturday at Wembley, dropped to the bench for the trip to Newcastle. Anderson joined Michael Carrick in the middle, with Paul Scholes suspended for three matches after his x-rated red card against Man City.

The United gaffer gave reason for his changes after the match:

“We did that tonight [reshuffled the pack] as we tried our best to freshen up. We did the best we could as it was a tiring pitch at Wembley, a slow pitch that can drag players down a little bit. But, in fairness, we didn’t show signs of that – we were energetic and our players thrived on the challenge, which is good coming at this stage of the season.”

Faith in Nani may be wavering further following last night’s blank – the Portuguese winger has now failed to score in his last seven league appearances – his previous goal coming back in gameweek 27. A total of 5 assists and 5 FPL Bonus have kept things ticking during that spell but, a largely unproductive performance last night, coupled with the risk of rotation, is a reason for concern. Nani looks a doubtful starter for the weekend meet with Everton, unless of course Ferguson plans to go to leave him on the bench at Schalke of course.

Fergie Confident
This was just the second time in their last twenty-one league games United have failed to find the net. So was it two points dropped or one point nearer the title? According to Sir Alex, it’s the latter, as his side edge nearer their 19th title.

“I’m confident we’ll be fine now as that was a hard one to get over. At this stage of the season, we’re in a better position than we were on Saturday as there’s one less game and five games left. I think you’ve got to look at Chelsea also and how they respond to three home games in a row. There’s two important games coming up – obviously Arsenal away and Chelsea at home. But we’ve got a better goal difference than Chelsea and I think we’re in a better position today.”

Why on earth would you get rid of VDV before a home game with West Brom? Absolute madness!

If Carroll and Adam are both passed fit, then I wouldn't change anything. Carrol, Adam and VDV all have excellent fixtures coming up, no reason to get rid.

Wilshere will be very, very good but currently is overrated.

Before Ramsey got injured he was without a doubt above Wilshere in the pecking order. He's not really long come back from that injury (and such a long lay-off at that). He'll be a very good player, imo.

I agree Bubbles, I'm not sure whether SW meant Ramsey isn't good enough at the moment (i.e. still recovering from the injury) or at the moment (in general with his development). If it's the latter, then I'd really have to disagree.

Quick question about transfer strategy. With only a few weeks left, I'm desperately chasing 70 points for a cash prize in an office league.

When making transfers, is it better to go for short-term, high-points-reward picks, or make longer-term picks that avoid me having to take a few 4pt hits?

    Open Controls

At this point, if you think a player will get a haul in a given week, and you are chasing a lead, then there is no point planning long term with 6-7 games left.

I have settled on my back 5 now, there will be only be transfers in and out for midfielders and forwards for me which then allows (barring injury) to chop and change a few based on fixtures. I got rid of VDV a few times in the season now, and got rid of Nani last week, so I am not fearful of the value issue anymore (no one should be at this point of the season anyway, but at least it is just not a factor now).

You need a bit of luck for 4 point hits, there is no doubt about it, but they can just as easily come off than fail, take Rooney for instance, I was on the cusp of doing Drogba IN Rooney OUT all last week, wouldn't lose too much value on Rooney, Drogba with two games, but I thought " sod it, Rooney has Newcastle and likes scoring against them, plus, I will want him versus Everton", so, Rooney 2 + 4 point hit gives a threshold of 6, if Drogba scores over that, then the hit is a success, Drogba has 12 in one game, so you can see the hit would of more than paid off.

Don't be wreckless with hits, but sensible measured hits can make up some ground at this point, and I would not bother looking too far down the track at this point.

That being said, don't overload on DGW players next GW, bar Fulham and Stoke their fixtures next week are rubbish

Sorry it's a bit cheeky to ask, but as a for instance, what transfers might you suggest for my team for the next week or two?

          Foster, Al Habsi
          Luiz, Kolarov, Huth, Bardsley, Djourou
          Lampard, Nani, Meireles, Downing, Jarvis
          Rooney, RVP, Zigic

Defence is fine, with two DGW players in Huth and Kolarov in the next 3 GW's, so all good there, Bardsley will not be played very often I take it.

Nice midfield, I would be looking at Downing OUT despite their fixtures, there are better options in the next few gameweeks and I would be thinking:

Downing OUT Etherington IN and Zigic OUT Zamora IN this week for a 4 point hit, Villa are at home to Stoke yes, but Stoke are hard to break down and Villa have hardly been sintillating.

I would also be considering losing Nani, if your main rival has him it could be a good differential with risk of rotation hanging over him

Zigic & Downing to Etherington and Zamora were the transfers I'd had in mind but was unsure of - thanks very much for the reassurance.

My main rival does actually have Nani - I hadn't thought of taking Nani out but you make a very good point. Might someone like Kuyt or Ashley Young be a good replacement?

From what I can glean, he's pretty happy to sit on his lead, and not tinker his team too much. He makes the odd transfer here and there, but is basically just cruising. Which makes me think I should play things a bit more week-to-week.

I would hold tight on the point hits and maybe start looking to captain differentials at this stage. By all means make your transfers on a week to week basis, just not for points hits and maybe captain the players you bring in. For example, who are you planning to captain GW34?

Good point - I'd like to minimise point hits (except when there's a fairly clear possibility for reward).

Not sure about captain for GW34 - depends on what transfer I make, but I'm wary of captaining most of my doublers. Huth could be a good differential captain, but I think that's too risky. Lampard against West Ham or Rooney against Everton seem obvious choices, but perhaps too easy and they could do nothing.

I'd pick out a good transfer and captain him. O'Hara would be the one I'd go for, but you'll know who you
              fancy yourself.

Nasri OUT this week, but to who? Do I bother with Etherington? And do I spend a further 4 to do Wellbeck OUT Zamora IN too? Team is linked, input appreciated.

Welbeck does have a pretty good fixture this week though, and after that too. Haven't seen much of Sunderland recently, so is he not looking like a good option any more?

I have only seen highlights and he has not been great, but then neither have Sunderland, he is a doubt for this weekend, and I have bought into this Zamora hype, and where most peoople have a settled front 3, I don't, so it's easier to go for it, that being said, at 4.6 I don't mind him sitting on the bench every week either.

My watch list for Nasri replacement is:

Dempsey, Walters, O Hara in that order. If Adam is out the hit could come good.

woudln't touch Walters, he flatters to decieve that guy, Dempsey is always an option, and everytime there is talk of him dropping deeper, and not playing off the striker, he still gets the same chances, O'Hara and Wolves, meh.

I think Etherington's the safest bet. Dempsey playing deeper with Zamora back; Walters could do well but is a risk; O'Hara is a decent option, but with the injuries at striker, I don't see who he's going to be assisting.

      In my opinion -

      Adam to Etherington
      Ban der Vaart to Jarvis
Welbeck to Sturridge/Zamora/Carroll/Bent/Odemwingie - haven't made my mind up on this yet!!! 🙂

Not sure I agree on VDV OUT MMW, but we will see what he does, if anything, tonight. West Brom at home is quite appealing, for a penalty shout at the very least, and then a double following the Chelsea game, I held on to him for this reason alone.

Adam has two good games in the next 2, I am okay benching him this week if needs be because I always had a problem in who to select, Adam goes for Ya Ya probably in 2 weeks time.

Welbeck I think will go to Zamora, on that I am pretty certain at least.

        Cheers for input

Yes it is my plan as well and I think it is well worth the hit since Welbeck is injured. Etherington is in form and is on pens and the only way I might rethink it is if Nasri gets nothering less than a double and 3bps today.

I imagine it was felt that a 'buffer' season was needed where the club was preparing for a life after Fabregas. I think Wenger has been gradually refining his tactics to that effect all season. It was the correct move.

Maybe, but he is right he would have been sacked and should have been sacked in England. At £3m revenue a game (the highest in the world) we should be making some serious signings. If he just wants to develop talent then manage the youth side or pee off to Barnet.

Why mention it? There's a message there somewhere and we can't just have another similar season.

He may just be angling for his move, but if he is intent on staying then in this case his comments should be taken on board as club captain. Whether he should be captain is another matter as it stinks of Wenger just giving it to his best player, similar to making Henry captain. That and the fact he had no other leaders in the side - no Adams, Vieira, Keown etc. - a fighting spirit when the chips are down, being able to show character and resilience when preserving a lead. Instead too much emphasise is on the technical ability, which may work in Spain, but is way less effective in the Premiership.

I'd go for Lucio or Cahill and make them captain. They are giants and leaders and the type that Arsenal need.

No, but you called it a 'ROning endorsement of your manager there you bucktoothed little scamster', so it didn't sound like you were in support of his comments, although on reflection you probably just meant that it was wrong of him to come out and say things at this stage and instead should concentrate on his own performances.

I am keeping Terry and Luiz personally, but Hangeland IN is a good move, Fulham look good for at least one cleanie next week.

Gyan has a good fixture so I would hold on him, Sunderland are desperate for points.

Adam has two good fixtures coming up, but is a doubt this weekend, I would hold him for next two, but Duff (if fit) is a good move.

      Terry OUT Hangeland IN
Adam OUT Duff/Dempsey IN are good moves.

adam for me wont be back in my team as i think they are in total freefall.(he will still get points but not as regular now.)

Sunderland needed points for the last 5 game weeks and look awful i can honestly see them staying up by the skin of there teeth by mayb winning 1 at a push 2 more games this season...

I am not a Wolves player IN fan, but agree completely with Zigic to Carroll, easiest transfer of the year I'd say, I got rid of Zigic for Welbeck 3 weeks back, and despite Welbeck not scoring, at least he gets some points and only costs 4.6.

You are getting a doubler, and Wolves do need goals, so I think they are sensible moves.
