As the Britannia celebrated their heroes homecoming following last weekend’s FA Cup Semi Final win, Stoke steamrollered a pitiful Wolves to climb into the top half of the table and virtually seal their top-flight survival. Over in Schalke meanwhile, Man United won at a canter, controlling the match from the first whistle to last in a game that could have been embarrassing for the hosts but for the efforts of Manuel Neuer in goal. Here’s the notes from last night’s action…

Kenwyne Jones
The Stoke hitman is peaking just at the right time for Tony Pulis’ side; Jones scored for the third league game in succession, a remarkable upsurge in form considering he had managed one goal in his previous sixteen. With his goal at Wembley factored into the equation, Jones is proving his importance for Stoke ahead of the remaining games of the season, and a trip to Blackpool this weekend will certainly offer more chances to keep up the scoring run. There follows (ARS, mcy) before a home tie with Wigan sees out the season.

Matthew Etherington
As last night’s post reported, Etherington pulled up on the half hour mark with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and was immediately replaced by Dean Whitehead. For Stoke, Etherington has been second-best only to Robert Huth for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points and his absence-if confirmed- will come as a big loss to the Potters. After the match, Tony Pulis only had this to say:

“We’re worried about Matthew and what damage he’s done to his hamstring. We’re hoping and praying he’ll be fit. He’ll have a scan on Wednesday.”

We’ll be sure to keep you informed when, or if, any news transpires today. With Etherington sidelined, Pulis is likely to turn to Whitehead to come into central midfield with Rory Delap shifting to the left flank. Danny Pugh is another option available here.

Pulis is at least getting a big contribution from the opposite flank; Jermaine Pennant grabbed a goal, an assist and picked up all 3 Bonus Points for a Fantasy haul of 14 FPL points.

Wolves Stay Grounded
A win would’ve propelled them out the drop zone but Wolves never look likely to take anything from this game. That six-match run from gameweek 26-30 which saw Mick McCarthy’s side plunder 11 points has been followed by just 1 point from the next four fixtures. Big Mick could only admit post-match:

“We were well beaten. It was very surprising we weren’t at it tonight. If it wasn’t for Wayne Hennessey the scoreline would have been more embarrassing.”

With all four remaining games against sides in the bottom half of the table (bir, WBA, sun, BLA) Wolves can at least take solace in the fact that the other four teams in the bottom five are playing just as poorly.

United on Easy Street
Six away Champions League game have produced six clean sheets but none could have been more straightforward than last night’s. With Rio Ferdinand alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of defence, Alex Ferguson’s side coasted through the game and would have ran out far more convincing winners if not for Schalke’s outstanding keeper, Manuel Neuer.

Perhaps with this Sunday’s game at Arsenal in mind, rotation came into play; Fabio started at right-back, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick began in central midfield and Nani was benched, with Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park the preferred wide men for the visitors. Having assisted his side’s three previous goals in the competition, Giggs once again proved his class on the big stage, grabbing the opener after a superb Wayne Rooney through ball. Rooney then bagged the second shortly afterwards and United saw out a victory that means they practically have one foot in the final.

After the match, the United manager did confirm Giggs will be rested for the trip to the Emirates, an indication of his thinking ahead of the crucial showdown with Arsene Wenger’s side. Given the fact that United do not need to go for three points against either Arsenal or Chelsea, we could see the 4-5-1 formation make a return against the Gunners. That could either see Javier Hernandez dropped to the bench or starting up front with Rooney patrolling a flank. One thing looks certain, Ferguson’s future rotation is likely to be tempered by the fact that United go into their second-leg with Schalke with a comfortable lead.

While Ferguson beamed with satisfaction after the commanding victory, Pep Guardiola lost the plot in a foul-mouthed rant aimed at Jose Mourinho ahead of the other semi final tomorrow evening. Clearly, squeaky bum time has found its way to the Nou Camp.

I can't seem to drop Terry purely because of his goal threat, his shots on target continue to be quite high for a defender, and we all know Luiz is capable of a goal, and BP's at the moment, don't see Carr or Walker scoring better to be honest, and it wouldn't be a great shock to me if Spurs are kept out

Was very close to doing Welbeck OUT Balotelli IN this week, when I saw you had brought him in I was genuinely worried, dodged a bullet this week, he will come good, am looking at him or Pav for the double, and there is yet another sentence I thought I would never say in this strange season, the earliest one this season was "Dunn has good fixtures and seems to be fit" - he wasn't for long.

Nice score again, could be losing some of the captaincy though! Zamora doing anything tonight would be just swell

Bit of a shame with Balotelli but he was worth the punt with Welbeck injured, Zamora too with Tevez out. Wouldn't normally pick them but the fixtures and gamble element got to me.
Really disinterested with it all now and nothing to play for so may as well gamble for fun. I'm looking at Pav too & Defoe, hopefully this weekend will make the decision for me.
Absolutley no point taking hits for defenders at this stage of the season so my defence will stay injuries permitting and Terry/Luiz can stay irrespective of fixtures.

I disagree. Its not an assist because of the almighty deflection it took (similar to the one Nani lost v Man City). However the goal for Pennant will stand as there is no chance that is going down as an own goal.

I'm mulling over the exact same thing. One will be in my squad. think i'll go for YaYa, his stats at home to bad sides are pretty good, he's cheaper as well. Silva is good, but a little like Modric, doesn't get the FPL pts his outstanding performances deserve. Still not decided, silva is the luxury buy for me if I feel flush come Sat am.

Nani stays for me this week. A Young is on borrowed time.

Yaya looked pretty knackered in the Blackburn game, either that of he just wasn't trying! I just wonder where he could be subject to rotation as the cup final approaches.

Although I guess the same applies to any Man City player given how Tottenham aren't putting up much of a fight for 4th at the moment.

Much of a muchness and really isn't worth the hassle deliberating which is better as there will probably only be a few points in it. Yaya does look like he can get forward in his current role but he's not the most elegant player compared to Silva.
I prefer A.Johnson as a player myself but I'm not sure he will get the playing time to warrant the trade.

You'd have thought that Monday night's events (Dzeko scoring, Johnson going off not Balotelli for Dzeko, and Johnson playing poorly) will mean fewer minutes for Johnson in the upcoming weeks.

It's a shame because when he plays he usually scores well, and would have been nice to have him at that price, but I just can't see him getting enough minutes to make him a worthwhile investment.

I had it set to transfer him in and still might but the points you raise is exactly what I'm thinking. I may just sit tight this week and see how they do against WHU and pick the form player after that match.

            Re silva versus YaYa

I've just checked some recent homes games against weaker opposition and Silva edges it slightly over YaYa

            Silva - Sunderland 10, Wigan 11, West Brom 7

            YaYA - sunderland 12, wigan 8, West Brom 3.

arguably West Brom are tougher under Woy, but sunderland and wigan give a good indicator of typical pts to expect against West Ham.

Not really, i wanted to do Nani -> Kuyt & Coleman -> Lescott/Kola. The last one will have to wait now.

Fair point,I've got used to having to transfer injured or rotated players the last three months, and had forgotten what an open choice looked like.

He has Chelsea away and spurs are hardly playing well. Your not subbing him out so you will still have him in GW36

i think he means for the bench. even so, im not benching vdv. too much potential any given match, especially when hes coming off a brace.

no answer will sound safe, but id reluctantly bench nzogbia. im faced with starting nani/rooney awayt to emirates as well, not ideal, but im hoping one of em will do well enough to ease a 2 pointer from the other. rather than picking the wrong one to bench.

Apart from Arsenal, VdV has hardly excelled in the so-called "big games". He was poor against Real home and away as well. Benching him isn't madness, at least imo anyway.

I'd be more inclined to sub nani. He will play but usually gets big points at OT...rarely away from home. Gave u a reason to keep odem and vdv

IMO he was unlucky not to get 10 points plus at the weekend. Newcastle can defend well but Liverpool are playing great and at least have something to play for. In addition he is involved with direct free kicks.

Under 2.5 goals in the Chiapas/Barranquila game tonight in the Copa Libertadores. It's between 3/4 and 4/5 at most bookies.

i wouldnt do Carroll to Saurez unless Caroll is rules out. Chelsea do have newcastle at home in GW37 so I'd be wary of dumping Lamps.
