As the Britannia celebrated their heroes homecoming following last weekendโ€™s FA Cup Semi Final win, Stoke steamrollered a pitiful Wolves to climb into the top half of the table and virtually seal their top-flight survival. Over in Schalke meanwhile, Man United won at a canter, controlling the match from the first whistle to last in a game that could have been embarrassing for the hosts but for the efforts of Manuel Neuer in goal. Hereโ€™s the notes from last nightโ€™s action…

Kenwyne Jones
The Stoke hitman is peaking just at the right time for Tony Pulisโ€™ side; Jones scored for the third league game in succession, a remarkable upsurge in form considering he had managed one goal in his previous sixteen. With his goal at Wembley factored into the equation, Jones is proving his importance for Stoke ahead of the remaining games of the season, and a trip to Blackpool this weekend will certainly offer more chances to keep up the scoring run. There follows (ARS, mcy) before a home tie with Wigan sees out the season.

Matthew Etherington
As last night’s post reported, Etherington pulled up on the half hour mark with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and was immediately replaced by Dean Whitehead. For Stoke, Etherington has been second-best only to Robert Huth for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points and his absence-if confirmed- will come as a big loss to the Potters. After the match, Tony Pulis only had this to say:

“We’re worried about Matthew and what damage he’s done to his hamstring. We’re hoping and praying he’ll be fit. He’ll have a scan on Wednesday.”

Weโ€™ll be sure to keep you informed when, or if, any news transpires today. With Etherington sidelined, Pulis is likely to turn to Whitehead to come into central midfield with Rory Delap shifting to the left flank. Danny Pugh is another option available here.

Pulis is at least getting a big contribution from the opposite flank; Jermaine Pennant grabbed a goal, an assist and picked up all 3 Bonus Points for a Fantasy haul of 14 FPL points.

Wolves Stay Grounded
A win wouldโ€™ve propelled them out the drop zone but Wolves never look likely to take anything from this game. That six-match run from gameweek 26-30 which saw Mick McCarthyโ€™s side plunder 11 points has been followed by just 1 point from the next four fixtures. Big Mick could only admit post-match:

“We were well beaten. It was very surprising we weren’t at it tonight. If it wasn’t for Wayne Hennessey the scoreline would have been more embarrassing.”

With all four remaining games against sides in the bottom half of the table (bir, WBA, sun, BLA) Wolves can at least take solace in the fact that the other four teams in the bottom five are playing just as poorly.

United on Easy Street
Six away Champions League game have produced six clean sheets but none could have been more straightforward than last nightโ€™s. With Rio Ferdinand alongside Nemanja Vidic in the heart of defence, Alex Ferguson’s side coasted through the game and would have ran out far more convincing winners if not for Schalkeโ€™s outstanding keeper, Manuel Neuer.

Perhaps with this Sundayโ€™s game at Arsenal in mind, rotation came into play; Fabio started at right-back, Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick began in central midfield and Nani was benched, with Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park the preferred wide men for the visitors. Having assisted his side’s three previous goals in the competition, Giggs once again proved his class on the big stage, grabbing the opener after a superb Wayne Rooney through ball. Rooney then bagged the second shortly afterwards and United saw out a victory that means they practically have one foot in the final.

After the match, the United manager did confirm Giggs will be rested for the trip to the Emirates, an indication of his thinking ahead of the crucial showdown with Arsene Wenger’s side. Given the fact that United do not need to go for three points against either Arsenal or Chelsea, we could see the 4-5-1 formation make a return against the Gunners. That could either see Javier Hernandez dropped to the bench or starting up front with Rooney patrolling a flank. One thing looks certain, Ferguson’s future rotation is likely to be tempered by the fact that United go into their second-leg with Schalke with a comfortable lead.

While Ferguson beamed with satisfaction after the commanding victory, Pep Guardiola lost the plot in a foul-mouthed rant aimed at Jose Mourinho ahead of the other semi final tomorrow evening. Clearly, squeaky bum time has found its way to the Nou Camp.

Anyone do some last minute Olympics games ticket applying last night?

It was a tad annoying the way that it was done, although I know that was to make it fair. But we ended up applying for lots of things in rubbish seats so that the cost was kept down and we had more chances of getting to go.

In the end we applied for

    Opening and closing ceremony

Then did some stuff over 3rd-5th Aug

    Athletics - Hockey - Boxing

    Athletics - Football - Basketball

Marathon (well sticking around in London at least).

Hopefully we'll get something, but no doubt it will be the crap stuff we applied for just to be in and around the buzz.

That was £170, we literally applied for cheapest seats in everything just hoping to get something. Football will be cool, it's the quarter finals at Wembley and I've never been there.

I really wanted to apply for the 100m mens final day but it was £50 and we tried to spread the risk by going for less popular things.

Jeez! It's a shame it's come at a time when I'm just finishing uni and seriously in debt!

I would have liked to apply for more, and some of the better athletics events, also the cycling would have been cool in the velodrome but again was cheaper to apply for 2 other sessions rather than a short track session.

I made sure I sticked to mens events only (athletics not included!)

No, Denilson is though. I don't know if he gets abuse, but he's been on there for a long time now, I think.

So either the abuse isn't too bad, or he can take it.

They all 'can take it'. They all get far worse from the stands every saturday. The idea that Gibbo left because of playground insults is seriously lolworthy. Whether they can be bothered is a whole different thing.

the messages from the utd fans on it were still tragic, for thinking probably not being good enough for man utd makes you a terrible footballer and as it highlighted some man utd fans really do think carrick is woeful, even worse than gibson

Leaving out the terrible pass against City in the F.A cup (of which the previous 2 passes didn't help matters), Carrick has been playing a lot better recently. Still lots of improvement to be done, but getting better.

Give Carrick time and space, and he's a brilliant player, can spot and execute a pass so well.

What he's not so good at is creating that time and space for himself.

Carrick works so much better in a 442, as he's not crowded out by the other midfielders. He was seriously good again last night. Prone to making the odd gaff still though.

I actually like Robbie Savage these days. Never did when I saw him playing in the prem but he does crack me up on Twitter.

He always tends to say hes lucky to have what he has, which is good but one of the best tweets was after someone corrected his spelling of Lamborghini, and he just replied, fair enough I can't spell but that doesn't stop me having 5 of 6 of their cars on my drive (something along those lines).

                I liked that tweet

I've not seen him on that but I tend to like him as a pundit

Seems to be rather fair on what he thinks will happen in a game and reflects well after, and seems to not be bias.

Generally tells it how it is, but like I said only really seen him on twitter and sometimes on the BBC.

Id disagree with pretty much everything you said on Savage as a pundit there Andy.

Classic case of lets find a footballer who is comfortable on camera and let the pundit stuff come later .

                    Its rife throughout the sport.

Imagine if it were applied in other ways and you see how ridicuosly the notion is. Here is John, he is excellent on camera and his opinions cause much debate - lets get him to come on and be our expert on global warming. Note John knows nothing about global warming beyond the cliches.....

Apple - the newspapers are as bad. Football journalism on the whole is rank.

Blogging has taking it over on quality.

Damo - he knows how to play it, moves his muscles to perform adequately. His understanding of it is dire. Cliche ridden nonsense which seems to be accepted in sports largely. This dumb dumb people dont care.

People havent been given the chance to care as all the pundits are the same. If you improved the coveage and stopped employing ex footballers things would change.

perhaps it comes from a time when tv first started doing punditry and viewers wanted a familar face from the industry - enter ex player. Times have change and its insult to those who watch that the pundit explaining it knows far less than the viewer

I feel like I should downgrade Terry to shift the funds forwards considering I may only play him once more this season. But having said that it would mean a 4 pt hit to do so.
Could do something along the lines of:
Terry, A Young + Zamora > Kolorov, Silva (or Kuyt?) + Suarez (-8)
Was originally planning on Fabs + Zamora > Silva + Suarez (-4)

personally, i think i dont eat enough protein, especially for the size of me (im quite big, not fat like, ). I find if i dont eat protein in the mornings, come evening, im craving sugar.

so my main goal now for the next few weeks is to make sure i get MORE meat into me in the morning (NOT MAN MEAT, ANY SMARTASSES), AND NOT EAT ANY SUGAR/CHOCOLATE/SUGAR WITH TEA/JELLIES/ETC.

oh, and plenty of red salmon out of tins will qualify as said meat

Very nice that you used your own feelings regarding craving and linked it to protein and sugar.

Biochemically this is 100% true. When you eat same amount of protein v same amount of sugar you body will give a completely diffeernt hormonal response.

You eat protein, hormones making you feel fuller are released and hunger hormones supressed.

The opposite occurs when you eat sugar. So even when eating the same amount you will eat more with sugar. Eating protein in every meal even a tiny amount will make a world of difference. Lots of studies on it if your interested. Just google , protein ,leptin, ghrelin

The craving for sugar is like a horrible cycle your body gets into.
Firslty sugar is the easiest to digest and hit your blood stream so craving it is apt as it will quickly quinch the hunger you feel.

When you eat it, you get a high sugar boost in your blood which causes a high insuling response to correct your sugar again. This leads to a big drop in sugar again from the blood. Your body fools your brain over time into thinking you havent eaten so you crave more.

Its the basis for obesity imo. All chemical. Exercise and overeating are merely a response to this chemical process.

If you eat the wrong foods , your bodies regulation gets messed up, not only that eating sugar, raises craving, insulin, more craving which leads to more eating, fat storage, more insulin prevent you using your stored fat, makes you feel even more hungry, more sugar craving, more insulin,..you feel sluggish with no energy , overeat and dont execise and bingo obesity.

There are amzing research to look into regarding chemical processes and hormones in the body. One case a mouse had so much insulin in its body (produced with chronic carbs consumption) which stopped its fat being released for energy it starved to death. Crazy stuff.

for anyone chasing a lead (ie moi) im starting to think benching van persie for rooney might be a splendid move. rvp could be rested a bit more to save him for next season (haha), but seriously, theyll be so deflated now, and havent got the easiest of fixtures.

keep at it man, ive got it back to 60, ye never know, sturridge might do a job for me tonight and get it down to 50, then i think on good captain, and it's game on

cos when youre making a small effort and theyre not, its quite disconcerting when your efforts, intellectually mean nothing and its all pot luck.

best scoress ive had all season are when i jsut said feck it, ill do this or that.

            Ouch!

We had the same problem with a guy leading our mini league because he had Bale and VDV when they kept scoring and Berbatov as well.

He made about 10 transfers about 25 or so weeks, never changed his team. In the end we decided to kick him as he wasn't paying any money and there was talk of me having to beat him as well to get the money so I kicked him and now I'm top ๐Ÿ™‚

By now I'd probably be ahead anyway if he's still not changing his team but at the time it was getting annoying!

i still think this is the worst rant ever. i feel guilty complaining about bench(auto sub) points but this is just you complaining about a rival making a better choice than you. who gives a sh** if malouda scores in the 90th minute? how about when he missed a one on one or his shot from 8 yards? is that 'sickening luck' of his? accepting mini-league defeat is hard (i've just done the same this week) but this rant is poooooor

i'm talking about chamakh that's rant last night. i like the guy and can understand his annoynance that his rival doesnt check his team sometimes, but this week when he clearly did check his team as he made 2 subs, 2 very good and to be honest pretty logical subs (jones coming into form with a dgw, his previous form is irrelevent, malouda flying) then saying someone is incredibly lucky because they beat you is silly. and using the goal being in the 90th minute is a bit silly imo, yeah it may be a bit more heart-breaking for you but it doesn't mean it's any less valid than a goal in minute x.
i actually sympathise with your rival bench point anger rbj.
if i was replying to you i would have replied to you, the position of the reply is the give-away ๐Ÿ˜‰ you probably deserve a more youtube comment response here but i'm giving you a proper one

ok fair enough, my response shoulnt have been like that either.

but this place is for complaining as well as everything else.

and i know malouda could have scored whenever, but that still doesnt mitigate the fact that, looking at your score, slightly happy that he's done nothing with the game almost over, and then BAM, he gets the 7 pointyer, and some of your gains from great picks are in the toilet. I know what your saying, of course we all do, but it's a legitimate complaint seeing as its at the end of the game, and youve avidly been watching said game, and happiness has built based on him doing nothing.

Not getting into this much more, but its like meeting a bird and she rides your mate 3 weeks into the relationship, and meeting a bird, and she rides your mate9 months after you marry her.

So get off his back, very legitimate moan the way i see it.

it's a legitimate moan, just this gameweek's part of the moan isn't imo, that's the only part i commented on, i shouldn't have bothered tbf as i made the point last night.
due to our desperation to win we probably attribute more of a rival's efforts down to luck than is fair. i'd be a hypocrite if i had a go at you because i've been pissed off by my league leaders' bench points all season (about 100 for him, 25 for me). maybe he just picks better subs than me? maybe he's more unlucky that players in his 11 don't start when my 11 always all start?
also when i'm swearing at an inanimate object (my tv) when my rival's captain lampard scored against west ham screaming in my head "you lucky bastard, that's his first chance of the f***ing game!" i don't have much of a case, although a deep breath later and i was over it and certasinly wasn't going to post about it on here.

actually i've just remembered why i replied to chamakh that last night. it was becasue he posted the rant once, then posted it again asking for sympathy (in a jokey way admittedly). i didn't agree with it once but didn't think it was reply worthy, then he posted it again and i thought "fiiiine, i'll say what i think."

It's not a rant of him bringing in Malouda, it more to do with him not checking his team everyweek and putting little effort in. Before this week, he'd gone 3 weeks without touching his team and had RVP emergency captain when Berbatov didn't play. Fair play to him for leading, it's just frustrating with the time i put into it.

In my 2 main mini leagues, I'm leading by 77 and 114 but the former one, he's catching due to me having a poor last few weeks.

    My current squad:

    Foster Begovic
    Coleman Simpson Terry Luiz Kelly
    Nasri Young Nani Walcott Bentley
    RVP Rooney Carroll

    Bank: 0.6 (2 free transfers)

My immediate plans is to do:
    Bentley > Yaya
    Nani > Silva

but I also have Carroll > Odemwingie in mind.

Any transfers that come to mind?

53 points behind in my mini league. Could be more after tonight.
So my season is basically over unless I do some serious damage over the last few GWs

    considering a 12 point hit -
    Young,O'Hara,Etherington and Zamora out
    Kuyt,Silva,Yaya Toure and DJ in.

Madness? I'm kinda thinking it is.

doubt it, it's not like a meireles goal streak which will never last these are all typical dirk kuyt goals. as long as he's on pens and plays in his attacking position/ positions (up front when carroll was injured) he'll be likely to get goals and assists, unlikely to keep up his current beserk kuyt tag but no reason why he can't get 6 points per game as opposed to his current double figure fest

How much (if anything) do people have riding on their mini leagues then?

This was our first season playing, for me and the rest of my mates.

We only put £10 in with a £60 jackpot for the winner (should be me!).

There's talk of it being made £100 next year with a split for 1st 2nd and third but I'm not so sure, that's a lot of cash to lose!

we've got an awesome set up -

18 of us 5r a month, the winner for the month gets 30 quid and second gets a 5r.

      overall pay out is

      1st - 200
      2nd - 150
      3rd - 100
      4th - 50

Which option seems to be better?

    A. Nani>Silva

pros: Nani is a rotation risk, has a couple of tricky fixtures to come and might not feature against BLP. Will get rid of him next week anyway for VdV.
cons:He is likely to start against ARS and always performs against them. My rival (25p behind me) has him.

    B. Young>Y.Toure

pros:Young isn't consistent enough for his price tag. Allows me to variate more next week as I would have more money.
    cons:two tasty fixtures to come

    Cheers.
