Rotation and defensive tactics have limited investment this season in Manchester City players not named Carlos Tevez or Joe Hart. Yaya Toure has reached double-digit ownership during the second half of the season as a budget buy and Aleksandar Kolarov saw a mini-bandwagon that lost a wheel (or two) before it ever reached full speed, but City’s Fantasy stew has generally remained lukewarm at best, despite a respectable season that sees them well positioned for a Champions League spot.

The Blue Moon is rising, however, and favorable fixtures and greater clarity regarding playing time have prompted significant discussion in recent days about the City midfield in particular, with some having already taken the leap and others pondering gameweek 35 and 36 purchases. Without question, the fixtures are most enticing. City are half of the season’s only remaining double gameweek, with that double sandwiched between two home fixtures against sides that have struggled mightily on the road (WHM, eve/TOT, STK, bol).

Although Toure and David Silva have earned most of the attention, Adam Johnson has also been added to the mix. We have scoured the stats and numbers to look at some of the pros and cons of each of this trio ahead of this weekend’s Eastlands showdown with West Ham.

Scoring. Although their respective styles are dramatically different, their overall league production this season is nearly identical:

FPL ptsGoalsAssistsBonus Pts
David Silva1234716
Yaya Toure1275614
Adam Johnson87459

The goals and assists are basically even, with Johnson trailing in overall points only due to reduced playing time as a result of injuries and rotation.

Playing Time. Breaking it down further, here is a quick look at their playing time in minutes as well as each player’s game count in terms of games in which each played 60 or more minutes, played 1 to 59 minutes, and did not play at all:

Minutes PlayedPlayed 60+ minutesPlayed 1 to 59 minutesDid Not Play
David Silva21572463
Yaya Toure25162823
Adam Johnson124811157

The numbers explain why Toure has been the preferred option thus far as he has been immune to rotation and held a central role in City’s team. However, the numbers may also support digging a little deeper with Roberto Mancini appearing more committed to a set lineup at the moment than at any time previously during the season.

Average Scoring. As the next chart reveals, Toure leads by a small margin in terms of points per appearance, but drops to the back of the pack if the analysis is limited solely to points from games involving more than 60 minutes or to all points per scored per minute of playing time:

Avg Pts Per AppearanceAvg Pts Per 60+ Minute AppearanceAvg Pts Per 90 minutes
David Silva4.104.465.13
Yaya Toure4.234.464.54
Adam Johnson3.355.186.27

A Final Breakdown. Consistent with these season averages, a quick glance at each player’s last five starts shows that – when they have played – all have been productive recently. Silva leads the way with 36 points in his last 5 starts (7,11,2,10,6), followed by Toure with 28 points (8,2,12,2,4) and then Johnson with 26 points (8,5,8,2,3). To be clear, these are each individual’s last five starts, not necessarily City’s last five games – arguably a reasonable approach if you are persuaded that each now hold a starting position. In addition to these point tallies, members accessing the OPTA stats will see that Silva has a commanding advantage in the category of key passes, while Toure holds a nod in successful dribbles. To his credit, Johnson has done well if not superb in both categories despite significantly fewer minutes.

Silva – As long as Tevez remains out, City’s attack should continue to run through Silva, and in turn increase the likelihood of his inclusion in Bonus Points, if not actual scoring. If you have cash to splash, Silva looks to hold an edge over Toure based on most recent form, but it is far from clear that he has a sufficient edge to warrant the expenditure if cash is tight.

Toure – Toure’s primary advantage to date has been his greater assurance of playing time, an advantage that may no longer exist. In any event, you can’t go wrong at the bargain price of 5.8 for an attacking midfielder, and it says something that the numbers are so close given their price difference. While perhaps a slightly more conservative approach, Toure frees up additional funds for your final moves of the season.

Johnson – Three straight starts bode well for Johnson during the run-in. All in all, he represents good value at his bargain price of 5.6 if cash is an issue. That said, he could make way should Mancini opt to start with Edin Dzeko and shift Mario Balotelli to a wide role. A riskier option and the wildcard in the pack.

Chucking the ball down field isn't an excessively tiring endeavor. But maintaining a high line, kinda turns your scenario around, Adam is banged up man, and wouldn't say he's 'on-form' either. But all that given he could have another GW30 with a little spot-kick love...

Yeah, don't agree Huth and Hangeland are sits, don't get greedy. Huth, cleansheets are a bust in BLP. And I don't envy Brede keeping up with 6-7 Sunderland midfielders, two of which (Sessegnon and Henderson) will essentially be strikers, Fulham+roadform+comfytableposition=them bleeding goals. Without the random header, I see 0 pts from Hangeland.

i'd go for Odemwingie mate, i've brought him in this week, his form is too good to ignore plus there should be goals in the derby.
then you could play a 3-4-3
Dempsey, Lamps, VDV aand O'hara in midfield
    Suarez, Balotelli and Odemwingie upfront.
That'd be a pretty solid choice?

Bench your first three (ohara/huth/hangeland) and get Sunderland coverage (meaning Sessegnon and/or Henderson). I haven't messed with a Sunderland player since the first few weeks that Gyan came on to their squad. But I see late season love in their remaining fixtures.

      Tough decision
Have to play Adam at home, the other 3 have away games against porous defences.

I'd say bench Sturridge just because of his injury doubt, meaning he might come on as a sub and get you 1 point (or zero if he does a zamora).

yeah but regardless, silva is always the guy mancini brings off between 70-80 mins. In a dgw who knows if he might even stretch this to 60 mins... I went for dempsey before because he is a 90 90 90 90 90 man, and generally yaya is too.

Also, being more of an assists man than a goalscorer, i think silva is only likely to get bonus points in a low scoring game. This means he's unlikely to be prolific in an 'oh no why didnt i buy him?!' kind of way.

I think it's more likely to be balotelli who scores 3-4 goals and brings fpl players to their knees, weeping, despite his risky temperament!

Good point this. I agree. Silva is a safe 4-8 point man, never likely to get you a double figure score. My concern is that Mancini plays Balotelli and Dzecko with YaYa playing a more defensive role.

lescott for me. Kolarov has been 'one for the future' all season. Even oop, I don't see kolarov as more likely to score a goal than lescott.

Opta stats love Kolarov.......shows all the crosses that he fire. What a irony would it be, not to have him and then he suddenly does amazing (hate the law of averages !!)

if he fires a lot of crosses and never gets any points, what that probably shows is that he's bad at crossing!

Assists count too. kolarov if I wanted a MC attacking defender, Lescott if I wanted a guaranteed clean sheet chance.

Good point TM. All I want is points, got to catch my with leader who is 9 pts away, irrespective of whether they come from CS or Assists.

go for lescott. Kolorov has the risk of being taken off before 60mins, and I agree with others has failed to live up to his potential this season. He takes free kicks, he crosses...but where are his assists?

Lescott or Hart are the best Man City coverage for me.

Kolorov stats 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 bonus, 10 starts, 6 games playing less than 60mins

Lescott stats 1goal, 1 assist, 4 bonus, just two games playing less than 60 mins.

Considering Kolorov's opta stats for crossing his pts are woeful.

I'm about to take a 4-pt hit to transfer Etherington out.

It's kinda difficult to decide among:

YAYA - easy fixture this week, double the next
SESSEGNON - good run-in fixtures, plus he's a striker now is he?
HENDERSON - same reason as sessegnon.

How does gyan & welbeck's injury affect SESSEGNON & HENDERSON's gameplay?

Someone with superior wisdom about Sunderland would greatly help me decide on who to take on. THANKS!

I've been asking for help on this all week too, I say Roll with Sess with Henderson a close second. Spot kicks did it for me. As well as the article on FPL site too:

      http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2349155,00.html

Bruce is talking about using him as a Drogba type, to make matters worse the youth player (Noble?) he had planned on trying to bring on in support was hurt in his youth match. So I would say you could go with both, and still be ok, something tells me there will be lots of goals. I just don't think Fulham will take them serious, be it 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 with two players oop (hopefully Henderson) would be wonderful. I know I'm getting some Sunderland coverage (never thought I'd say that).

My only concern is who of the Man City players could 'do a Dempsey'. And the only one is Balotelli, right? So if your rival captains him out of the blue it could be cheerio...

Obviously, anything can happen and any particular guy could score high. Remember Berba 5 goal or Defoe 5 goal.
In this game, one has to go by Expected outcome and Balotelli does not feature anywhere. Infact, he is way down on the CAptain's poll as well, and people are more scared of his getting a red card

        agree with that principle UNLESS...

        a) you're more worried about holding onto a lead in a minileague than overall ranking

        b) you rate balotelli as a good player, who has actually done reasonably well given the number of minutes he's had this season

11 starts, 6 goals - not that bad, considering he was often out on the wing, and now he's the main man.

I'll capatain Sessegnon before that fool. Mancini is too unpredictable, and has too many grudgy tendencies (see Adam Johnson). I'll just say that I think somebody will score at least 4 goals in one game before the end of the season.

Would you pick RVP or Rooney to do well in the United vs Arsenal fixture, cause one of them has to go from my team to get Suarez in.

I mean RVP is on hot EPL form. Rooney, not as good in the league, but the Champions league performance mustve given him a boost right? Tough call, but one needs to make way..!!

    Thoughts?

I prefer RVP for this GW but Rooney for the last 2 GWs. If you have to chop one out, consider carefully what your team would be in GW37 and GW38

I do infact. I was going to go for a Suarez IN Rvp OUT and then I thought I'd stop for some feedback y'know.

I think I'm gonna drop Rooney. Hard fixtures up ahead. But then Rooney's always had an eye for goal against Arsenal dont you think?
