The Dugout Discussion opens up bright and early on this Bank Holiday Sunday as we look forward to a bumper feast of footballing action.

Birmingham play host to Wolves and Liverpool welcome Newcastle to Anfield first as the mid-day kick-offs see all those skippering Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez (yours truly included) hoping for a good start. Then it’s Arsenal’s turn to host Manchester United as Alex Ferguson looks to either get one hand firmly on the Premier League trophy or open up a crunch game with Chelsea next week. Finally, Manchester City play host to bottom of the table West Ham as all those backing David Silva with their captaincy are made to wait.

Full line-ups sourced from the official website on our two early kick-offs follow…

Birmingham XI: Foster; Carr, Johnson, Jiranek, Ridgewell; Larsson, Ferguson, Bowyer, Gardner; Phillips, Jerome

Wolves XI: Hennessey; Mancienne, Stearman, Craddock, Elokobi; Foley, O’Hara, Henry, Jarvis; Fletcher, Ward.

Two changes for the home side see Barry Ferguson and Kevin Phillips bring their many years of experience back to the starting XI in place of Keith Fahey and Aleksander Hleb. A fit again George Elokobi comes straight back in to the side, while Kevin Foley also starts as Wolves also make two changes.

Liverpool XI: Reina; Flanagan, Carragher, Skrtel, Johnson; Lucas, Spearing, Maxi, Meireles; Kuyt, Suarez

Newcastle XI: Krul; Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique; Barton, Tiote, Nolan, Gutierrez; Ameobi, Lovenkrands

Andy Carroll has to make do with a place on the bench versus his old side, so hat-trick hero Maxi Rodriguez retains his place while Dirk Kuyt stays up front. Glen Johnson also returns from injury. Newcastle are unchanged.

Three games on the trot, televised, with little room for a break inbetween. Time to settle in, head into the Dugout Discussion if it takes your fancy, and look forward to six hours of consecutive Premier League action.

    A) Dempsey-> VdV
    Huth-> Alcaraz (best option for 4.3!?!)

    B) Dempsey-> VdV
    Luiz-> Dawson

    C) Huth-> Kolarov

    D) Nani->VdV (hoping for a Dempsey recovery)

    Only got one free transfer...

                    if you list all debateable decisions as "should" have gone one way (for man utd in this case) then that as db would say is 'flaud' 🙂
                    the only non-debateable decisions there are drogba was offside and macheda hand balled it in the same game. just like today 1-1.

                    Odd how the first article totally ignores:

                    First game: Evans' karate kick on Drogba in the box.

                    Second game: Macheda's 'goal'.

                    Third game: How Rooney (your goalscorer on the night and the man fouled by Luiz) shouldn't have been near a football pitch that night after the events at Wigan the weekend before.

                    The second article completely misses the point. It's not about the sum total of decisions that have gone in each team's favour, it's about the number of incorrect decisions that each team has been awarded.

                    So, as I expected, not a great argument. I was kind of hoping you'd be able to compile a list of games where Chelsea have been significantly helped by the referees. My list for Utd:

                    Stoke away: GNev committed a foul clearly worthy of a second yellow card.

                    West Brom away: GNev again denied a clear goalscoring opportunity in the box. No penalty or red card given.

                    Blackpool away: Rafael clearly fouls Varney in the box at 2-0 to Blackpool. Nothing given.

                    Wigan away: Rooney should have been sent off for his assault on McCarthy inside the first ten minutes.

                    West Ham away: Vidic should have been sent off, possibly twice, at 2-0. United then given a scandalous penalty at 2-2.

                    It may be slightly hypocritical moaning, as on balance Chelsea get more incorrect decisions in their favour than against them, my point has always been that United get more incorrect decisions than any other side in the league. I'm sure that virtually everyone, at least those not wearing those spectacular glasses that Faulk linked earlier, realises this.

                    Game, set, match, Priest. Good night, I hope your in a better mood tomorrow! 😀

                    No. You're still wrong. The point i've always made is ALL teams get dodgy decisions. The point you make is that Utd get MORE dodgy decisions. You have absolutely nothing to back this up apart from the testimony of Mfaulker and other ABUs. Where as i'm giving you clear evidence to support my theory. You fail. The end.

                    Faulk, yes anderson was poor today, like Fabregas was awful against Bolton and Newcastle, and WBA Remember that? Yeah that's right, that's the reason for this:

                    i think jamsiep is talking balony that team x has get too many decisions in their favour as more than anything it can never be proved so isn't worth stressing over. it's also questioning the integrity of officials which is madness.
                    man utd bombard the opposition more than any other side in the final few minutes, especially when they're chasing a game so i reckon it's just a case of making your own luck through pressure. a bit like tevez being a flukey bugger, his pressing buckaneering style lends itself to strokes of luck, just like man utd's intense late squeezing.
                    AP on form as usual with the united stuff. linking ROM is a new low though 😉

                What exactly have I done wrong today?

                Should Vidic have been sent off and conceded a penalty? Yes.

                Was it a penalty on Owen? Yes (although I'd still like to see whether he was offside)

                Did the second even out the first? Hell no.

                Basically all I've said today.

            Good link! Would rather win the league for sure though. Champions league a bonus but all about number 19 for me. If we play the way we did against Chelsea in CL then we should win. But they got a nice offside goal at OT last year!

    I'm struggling to see past Silva and VDV this double. Might indulge in a man city defender but it seems a bit for the sake of it.. can see both everton and spurs scoring against them.

    Don't really fancy any of the other doublers.. but then I always fear double gw's..

              Yeah i work in Audit as well for my sins..

              ahh ICAS is structured differently but from what I hear can suit better as you go off for long periods of time to study rather than on and off throughout the year which is what I had to do.

              Further luck for your ICAS.. they are incredibly tough exams but ultimately very very rewarding

            well, by saying that youve pretty much shown yourself not to be. But ill tell you what, i dont give a fiddlers. And it was a good laugh, and it wasnt directed at me at all, it was damn funy....wouldnt use the terminology 'nicely executed' though. it could have been posted anytime anywhere on this site and still been as funny.

      Horrid choice 🙁 Nani or Young... I'd do Nani although Young will be presumably going the week after. I'm in a similar situation myself.

        Cheers for the replies. The problem with getting rid of nani is united have two favourable fixtures after this week so I would like to have him. Alternatively I could get rid of nani this week for vdv then ship young out for Valencia the next week..... ah the joys of fantasy football

      City won't keep a CS and Spurs might vs Blackpool, Kolarov will shoot a lot so outside chance of a goal.

      No help at all really.

        I'm doing young to vdv. You already have toure so maybe look elsewhere for the dgw?

              Yes but then it's arsenal and liverpool. It's a choice. I'd rather have adam against west ham of those two, already have silva, then malouda and lampard because chelsea have everything to play for in the run up.

              I got Young and Bent (no sniggering!) for their run that ends after next week. I wouldn't get rid of either until then, but that's me.

            🙂 i only remember the handball when watching the game live and i swear the replay they showed then was pretty conclusive that it was tight but outside the area. if it was inside the still would be the plastered all over the republic of mancunia by now

              Fair enough I only saw it 2 or 3 times but when they paused it on when he handled it, it looked on the line! Will be a great game next week anyway to look forward to!

              From what i remember it was one of those where his feet were in the area but arm outside the area.. ergo no pen.. there wasn't much appeal for it

                it definitely would have squeezed it's way into fergie's post-match interview if it was inside.

          seems far to risky to me, but I like the thought of getting both Modric and VDV. As Granville noted, Modric gets a LOT of bonus.
