Aaron Ramsey steps out of Cesc’s shadow to down Man United and offer Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea hope in their defence of the league title. Liverpool continue their impressive progress since the return of Kenny Dalglish by sweeping aside Newcastle to leapfrog Tottenham in fifth place. Birmingham and Wolves share the spoils at St Andrews and Man City pick up another home win to leave West Ham rooted to the bottom of the table. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s games…

Dirk Kuyt
Thanks to spot-kick duties in the absence of Steven Gerrard, Kuyt continued his recent scoring spree by grabbing his eighth goal in seven games for the Reds in an Anfield stroll over Newcastle. Kuyt also picked up an assist and 2 Bonus Points for a 13 point return, thoroughly justifying his place at the top of our captain’s poll for gameweek 35. Andy Carroll’s second-half introduction looks like ending the Dutchman’s role up front, though, with a return to his right wing position for next week’s trip to Fulham most likely.

Luis Suarez
Drafted in by 33,000 Fantasy Managers ahead of this gameweek, the Uruguayan returned their faith with another eye-catching performance that brought about a goal, an assist and 3 Bonus Points. Suarez has picked up Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in every home start since arriving in January.

Newcastle Struggling
The Toon Army have seen their favourites score just one goal in the last four games, as Newcastle’s form drops dramatically in this latter part of the season. Alan Pardew’s side have just one win in their last eight games, and, despite their current 41 point tally, need another victory to secure survival. Their remaining fixtures (BIR, che, WBA) offer hope as far as the home matches are concerned, and they’ll be relying on top-scorer Kevin Nolan to fire them to safety. Luckily for Pardew, Nolan tends to keep his goals for home occasions; ten of his twelve have came at St James’ Park.

Steven Fletcher
The Scotsman continues to impress up front for Wolves; his penalty opener in the derby draw at Birmingham was a third goal in six games. It says a lot for his contribution to the cause that Mick McCarthy’s side have only scored seven goals over that period, showing just how crucial he has been of late. Incidentally, Wolves haven’t lost in that six game period when Fletcher has found the net. With (WBA, sun, BLA) still to come, his goals could be the key to their survival.

Birmingham Edge Towards Safety
Birmingham’s home draw with Wolves came at a cost; top scorer Craig Gardner was sent off after picking up two yellow cards and now misses next week’s trip to Newcastle. The point puts them four points clear of the drop zone and with (FUL, tot) to follow, another win should see them safe. Alex McLeish will be hoping Roger Johnson is fine next week; reports indicate the centre half was limping towards the end of the game, though no possible injury has been suggested as of yet.

Aaron Ramsey
Arsenal may have lost Cesc Fabregas to a thigh injury suffered in Saturday’s training session, but the Welshman -making his fourth league appearance all season- proved his class on the big occasion. Fabregas has played 13 league games in 2011 and has yet to find the net; Ramsey managed it in this, his second start, grabbing the only goal of the game to hand Chelsea a lifeline in the race for the title.

Wenger The Optimist
The Gunners boss was delighted with Arsenal’s performance and although his team are firm outsiders for the title, he still holds some hope in the race at the top:

”For me, it was immense pressure to be out of the title race, believe me, because I felt so strongly we would win this championship. We want to fight until the last second of the season. I have not given up any hope. We were really unlucky this season until now, let’s hope we have a bit more luck in the final three weeks. You never know.”

The Arsenal boss also revealed Samir Nasri was taken off at half time due to a “small” hamstring problem.

Fergie’s Away Day Blues Continue
A win would have set them up perfectly for next weekend’s Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea, but Man United were deservedly beaten at the Emirates. The league leaders have tasted defeat in three of their last five matches on the road now, falling to Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. United were the polar opposite of the team that swept aside Schalke in midweek, and have scored just one goal in the last three league games.

Nemanja Vidic
The United centre half was more than a little fortunate to escape a deliberate handball in the area, a moment of folly which could easily have earned him a red card and handed Arsenal a spot-kick. Considering any dismissal would also have also made him ineligible for next week’s crucial Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea -where a win would leave United six points clear with two games to play- Vidic can count himself lucky, in spite of this defeat.

City Looking Good for Top Four
Roberto Mancini’s side took a big step towards cementing fourth stop -at least- with their 2-1 home win over West Ham. The club’s form at Eastlands has been fantastic of late, with seven wins and a draw from their last eight home games. City play twice at Eastlands in the next two weeks, including the upcoming double gameweek (eve & TOT, STK, bol) and look primed for Fantasy Investment ahead of this weekend.

Mancini Positive on City Injuries
Nigel De Jong opened the scoring -his first for the club- but failed to emerge for the second forty-five due to the recurrence of a hip injury picked up a couple of days ago. Pablo Zabaleta suffered shin and ankle knocks but after the game Mancini revealed both should be fine for next weekend. Micah Richards is looking good for the Everton game and as for a certain Señor Tevez:

“Carlos is doing some work now and we will see“.

With two games in a week and the forthcoming FA Cup Final in mind Mancini even hinted at rotation, no doubt to the annoyance of many Fantasy Managers:

“I have picked the same team for the last three games but maybe we will change things at Everton and against Spurs.”

Hammers Lose Again
Five defeats on the trot, bottom of the league. Relegation form? Definitely. A look at West Ham’s last three fixtures, however, (BLA, wig, SUN) shows just why they still harbour hopes of staying up, as Avram Grant‘s side go head to head with three of the worst form teams in the league. Demba Ba’s goal was only the Hammers’ fourth in the last six league games, a worrying sign for Grant as the trap door inches closer.

Looks good. You'd be quite fearful of not having nani in the last 2 games of the season mind.

Although that is compensated somewhat by you having Rooney.

Great article. He should have added about that the argument that they personal bring money into the country is nonsense also. Since the tourists come to see a range of buildings, museums all over the country etc and not the Queen herself. Yet they lump the money taken in for seeing museums in Manchester with Prince Charles.

Nice to see some common sense here bubbles 😉

People always bang on about the tourism argument, and as you said they don't come here to see the queen, it's many many things. It's a nonsense argument in all.

If monarchy was abolished we firstly wouldn't be subsidising an already over-privileged bunch of blood-line-lottery-winners, all the palaces could be opened up (and charge people £3, £5, whatever, to have tours) and THAT would generate wealth for the economy.

I just think monarchy is quite ridiculous in 2011*, but many would disagree.

*I'm not trying to start another debate, so that is all I shall say on the matter! 😉

As a Foster owner, I'm surprised the assist is back on. After seeing MOTD2 there was no way I expected it. Without the defender's touch, the ball would not have reached the forward.
Silva's assist surprises me. Yes it looks as if the ball would have crept in but IMO it wasn't certain so the defender's botched clearance was decisive.

Should I keep the faith with Nani & Rooney (nice last couple of fixtures of the season). Or should I lose one/both? Was just gonna get Yaya in for Dempsey, but could get Silva if I lost Nani. I know my defence isn't great this week either! Got two freebies and 1.1m in the bank. Opinions would be much appreciated! Thanks

dont forget that adam plays bolton at home the following week in what is likely to be a MUST win game for blackpool as they play Utd on the last day.

perhaps the last time they rack up any points.

All 3 players are all in pretty decent form, and so are their teams so it may be worth taking a 4 point hit.

Avoid the first one... yes Kuyt in good form but providing Dempsey's injury isn't serious and he's back next week, he's as likely to get points in the next couple of games. Kuyt will be back in midfield next week to accomodate Carroll.

balotelli... when he's fit he plays... yesterday he hit the bar and had one cleared off the line AND got exactly zero yellow cards.

You heard right - ZERO yellow cards. It's a miracle I know.

I bet he even parked in a parking space.

pav or any spurs attacker is a bigger risk in my opinion.

(even if tevez is fit, balotelli will probably play out wide and arguably is more effectove from there anyway)

      Nani to VDV is decent.

In terms of Man Uts coverage it's best to wait and see how things pan out, if they still need to win the last game, calling the United could be difficult. If they have the title sown up I'm thinking about Berba for the last game as I'd imagine Rooney and Hernandez will be rested for the CL final.

Personally speaking shouldn't you be taking the Champs League into account.
If results go their way this week MU could have the title all but sown up.
Why is Fergie going to risk his top players against B'pool if they're champions and with a Champions League final to potentially worry about?

Didn't they play Hull 2 years back on the final day having won the league (and correct me if I'm wrong with a Champs League final round the corner) and SAF put out a practical B team?
Could be wrong - I've slept since then.

I think MU's last fixtures are great IF they're chasing the league.

The Chelsea result this week will be our guide.

Agreed, all depends on Chelsea result. And United have got some good results this season with odd B teams so I don't think SAF even needs to worry about losing too much face by benching his best guys for the last games (assuming title done deal).

There was a chance he was going to play yesterday but maybe Grant saw yesterday's match as a game Parker could not do as much in half fit as he could against B'burn 75-100% fit.

Interesting... thanks. Just having him back could have a positive boost to other player's potential value.

                  Exactly.
The other assumption is that Hitz is having to play deeper because Parker is out.
Maybe the latter's return will give Hitz more freedom.

Players coming back from injury scare me when it comes to FPL selection.

As much as it pains me to say it, as it stands I wouldn't touch a West Ham midfielder.* I still think we'll get the result as it's a good fixture for us but I think Ba could be the player to go for.

*Watch Hitz go mental against B'burn this week now I've said all that!! LOL

Thanks mate. It's really useful to get the views of a hammers fan. I do agree that ba could be the man. Just hpe hitz is the man supplying him

              No worries mate.
He's on set pieces etc so there is always that chance.
If I really had to pick a WHU midfielder, I'd probably go for him in all fairness and at 4.8m he's bloody cheap.

Did I mention i'd be playing him instead of lampard. F#ck it, i'm gonna do it. A bit of fun if nothing else and my mrs likes his name which worked with odemwingie!

He did look to be playing deep yesterday. Seems to do well in the home games though. O'hara didnt seem to do much either yesterday though and I fancy west ham to get 2-3 goals against blackburn

But from who, that's the question isn't it.... I can fit a forward into my team easier than a MF so it would be Ba or Fletcher, but that feels like all aboard the punt bus, destination disappointment.

I'm the other way around. I can only fit in a midfielder. If it qas a forward i'd 100% go with ba

Thanks for your thoughts. Ba is tempting for a bit of fun, but I'm not sure I'll be able to bring myself to get him this week over a DGW forward. Not that there are many viable options for them....

I'm struggling to find any viable Spurs options other than VDV. May have considered Bale but looks like too much doubt over him being dropped back to LB.

Modric or Lennon. Sandro could be a punt.

As a Spurs fan I would probably avoid Lennon at the moment. He was bizarrely subject to rotation and appears to have lost confidence. Modric is a decent shout with good BP potential and "due" a goal. Sandro will be a great player IMO opinion but don't really see huge FPL potential despite this weeks cracker.

I am seriously considering Kaboul. Good chance of clean sheet plus attacking potential.

Just seems everyone is talking about what City players to get in when they could easily score just one goal over this game week. Whereas there is arguably more chance of spurs goals considering their first game.

There's enough of a risk of Tevez being back for the second game to put me off Balotelli. But there was talk of Balotelli just being moved out the wing even if he is back, so who knows. Dempsey was injured in training before the game on Saturday.

Which 1 of the following should I bench for the following GW?
    1. Zamora
    2. Adam
    3. DJ

Alternatively if I play Coleman or R.Johnson I can then bench 2 of the above.

I hope Trump wins. But Higgins has his 'bad session' out of the way now. If Higgins ups his game then it could be very close indeed, if he doesnt then Trump could run away with it! i think Higgins will come good today though and it will be close. Cant wait!

Stas are in Trumps favour, players don't often win from trailing positions at this stage at the Embassy. Sneaky feeling Higgins might beat him though.
