As this 2010/11 season has progressed, the displays of David Silva become more assured with every passing game. There was no questioning the Spaniard’s ability when he joined Man City from Valencia at the start of the season, it was more a question of a tricky settling-in period for a diminutive playmaker less accustomed to the physical rigours of the Premier League.

A look at Silva’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points is fairly indicative of his debut campaign; up until the end of January, he’d played 22 games, scoring 1 goal, picking up 5 assists and 7 Bonus Points for a return of just 74 points, averaging just 3.3 points per game. For a player who started the FPL game priced 9.0 back in August, it was something of an understatement to view Silva as poor value in terms of Fantasy Investment.

Since February, however, the Spaniard seems to have found his feet within both the league and Roberto Mancini’s Man City system. The past 9 games have seen score 3 goals, pick up 3 assists and 11 Bonus Points for a 56 point return, or 6.2 ppg, more or less double his previous output.

Last Sunday’s home win over West Ham saw Silva at the heart of so many Man City moves, with a fantastic display that could have brought home far more than just 7 points for his Fantasy Owners. As our Members can see, this was far and away Silva’s most influential performance of the season and it seems that, in the absence of Carlos Tevez, his importance to City has only increased. Here’s a look at his displays in the last two home games, with and without Tevez.

This Average Position map shows Tevez (32) playing far up the field in the Sunderland game. Silva is just obscured by Mario Balotelli (45), who started in the middle of the front three, with Yaya Toure (42) fielded in defensive midfield.

Against West Ham, Silva (21) is virtually in the same position, but the crucial difference here is Balotelli. Playing as the lone forward on Sunday, the Italian’s position, rather than being similar to Tevez, shows a different interpretation of the role, as he played far deeper than the Argentine.

This meant that when in possession there was no Tevez to play forward to and Silva, popping up all over the pitch, became the main outlet time and again. Yaya Toure, back in his familiar berth at attacking central midfield, was City’s most forward player on average, as his endless energy saw him bomb forward and cause the Hammers problems from deep. City kept the ball much better, and had 60% possession against West Ham compared to 50% against Sunderland.

A look at Silva’s passing chalkboards in the two matches is revealing. He made 43 passes against Sunderland but against West Ham his distribution almost doubled, as he made 75 passes in an altogether more threatening performance, despite the match finishing 2-1 to the hosts.

A look at City’s shots also confirms they had more attempts in the West Ham game, with 21 shots (5 blocked) compared to 16 shots (5 blocked) versus Sunderland. Silva, in particular, managed 4 shots against the Hammers but just 1 in the Black Cats demolition, another example of an increase in his attacking potency.

With Tevez still only rated 50-50 for the FA Cup Final and Edin Dzeko failing to make much of an impression, it appears Balotelli is likely to continue leading the line for City, a good omen, perhaps, for Silva Fantasy Owners ahead of the upcoming double gameweek (eve & TOT) and beyond (STK, bol). Let’s hope the City boss chooses not to follow up on his weekend hint of rotation, then.

Morning all - I've already brought in VDV, worth a hit to do Nani to Kuyt? I've got Yaya so don't really want to get Silva and double up on City.

Well I doubled up on Silva - Yaya last week as they are good for the season now.

As below, I'm thinking of keeping Nani due to their final 2 games maybe being must win games.

I wouldn't bring in anybody yet though until Friday/Saturday. Nani > Kuyt no, as Liverpool will find Fulham away very tough.

Any Nani owners sticking, now the games against Rovers and Blackpool could be must win games?

I'd planned a few GWs ago to ship him out as expected United to have the title won and a possible European Final for Fergie to think about. Now I can't see Fergie resting him until the title is wrapped up.

Which Spurs players are you thinking other than VDV?

    Current mid:
    Nani Yaya Silva Young Walcott

I'm not convinced any of those should come out and thinking a Spurs player in defence

Nani: His record at OT speaks for itself.
Young: About to face Wigan at home.
Yaya: City players apart from rotation risk are staying until the end
    Silva: See above
Walcott: 2 favourable games to come vs Stoke and Villa. The final game is Fulham where can always be benched

Front 3 are: RVP, Rooney, Odem and don't think any of those should be removed either.

So it's basically looking like Spurs/City defender.

    guys i need help.

My current defence is pretty poor - Luiz, Walker, Coleman, Smalling and Foley.

Only 2 of them are pretty much nailed on starters - Luiz and Walker.

I have zero cash in the bank.

    I am defending a 7 point lead.

The rest of my team is Foster, Mignolet, Lampard, VDV, Silva, Yaya, Adam, RVP, Rooney, Drogba.

I have already done my transfer this week.

What are your thoughts on either of these -

    1) Luiz and Coleman out, Kolorov and Dawson in for -8. I only gain 1 more starter by doing this though

    2) One of Rooney/RVP/Drogba out and Coleman out for -8 and Odemwingie and either Kolorov or Dawson in. I only achieve 1 more starter again but will have 3 starters in Luiz, Walker and whoever I bring in and hopefully they + Odem will get me my -8 back

    thoughts please?

Interesting with regards to Crouch for the upcoming DGW.

Crouch seems to start on the bench more often than not against weaker teams:

    WBA, West Ham, Newcastle.

Whereas against Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool he started.

With Spurs about to face Blackpool at home, I'd say there's a good chance he'll start on the bench.

How can I get Rooney in my team?

He's pretty much essential this coming week with Webb as referee.

There might be goals. Chelsea have to win, allowing United the opportunity to launch their trademark counter-attacks. Could be a cracking game, hopefully not overshadowed by bad refereeing.

Suppose it could be one of those games alright, as long as Rooney doesn't try his super duper long run up for his penalty miss against Arsenal earlier in the season, after the game on Sunday I am finding it very hard to predict which way Sunday will go, United did not play well, and Arsenal defended very deep negating the effectiveness of Chicharito, Berbatov and Rooney mightn't be a bad call on Sunday with Hernandez on for impact

I think Hernandez has to start, he's been decent in the games against Chelsea so far this season, and it seems as though Berbatov is well out of favour, at least in the big games, at the moment.

I’ve slipped to 23 points off my rival now thanks to Dirk Kuyt and need to make up ground quickly. This is how I’d expect our current squads to line up for GW36 (mine first):

    Foster (Begovic)
    Huth Kolarov Luiz (RJ, Coleman)
    Silva Lampard Nani Adam Young
    Odem RVP (Gyan)

    Foster (Schwarzer)
    Luiz Kolarov Enrique Baines (RJ)
    Kuyt Meireles Adam (Malouda, Etherington)
    RVP Rooney Sturridge

I’m currently planning Nani > VDV(c) as a certainty and probably Gyan > Ba, I know it’s not great to give away 4 points when I’m trailing but I realy don’t fancy my team for this week. Plus I’d expect him to do Etherington > Yaya and maybe Malouda > VDV/Silva too.

I’m desperate to win this league so would greatly appreciate some advice boys

Yup, Ventspils to win @ 5/4. It's only really Bet365 that are offering bets on the game though. Them to win nil is also apparently recommended @ 3/1.

I find with all of his tips they always go down in price from the night before, one team the other day I got 10/11 on and they started the game 4/7 away. Mad.

Seeing Balotelli is a risk it would have to be Yaya, Silva & a defender or Balotelli if brave. Hart is another option.

Been listening to quite a few footy podcasts at work over the past 2 days. Had a listen to a Wolves one & it didn't sound positive at all. At least they have the fixtures but not being able to beat Birmingham could be the difference between staying or going down.

They have had a nice run of fixtures for a while now and still haven't got out of it so I don't see why there is so much hope for Wolves. West Ham have better fixtures than them and Wigan are picking up form at the right time, I still think they will get out of it and Wolves, West Ham and Blackpool will go down.

I'm a Wolves fan, and it just looks like the team is in disarray. It's hard to feel positive when there's little to feel positive about. They've had so many chances to clamber out of the relegation zone and they've just floundered.

I really get the feeling the team is direction-less. If they do get relegated, the tiny silver lining is that hopefully it'll be a catalyst for change.

I know as a West Brom fan I can't really talk about how poor another team's defence is but really, yours hasn't really changed since when you got promoted.

You go through patches where it can be good and resolute but you always have mistakes in your team, Zubar against Bolton, Mancienne against Blues etc.

I just think it has been poor from Mick in the transfer market more than anything, that dude from Hull who hasn't played for £2m? Plus Van Damme for £2.5m and he pisses back off to Belgium a few months later. Where as we got Shorey for 700k and Scharner on a free who have both been solid players for us this year, that imo just shows very poor business in comparison.

Tell me about it. I'm really thinking Mick has got to go.

In 2 years he's completely failed to bolster the defence. He's been pretty inactive in the transfer market, and when he has made transfers, it's either been to stockpile Championship-level players, or to overpay for players who have done nothing.

Plus his squad selection, and tactics in general, are pure pessimism.
