As this 2010/11 season has progressed, the displays of David Silva become more assured with every passing game. There was no questioning the Spaniard’s ability when he joined Man City from Valencia at the start of the season, it was more a question of a tricky settling-in period for a diminutive playmaker less accustomed to the physical rigours of the Premier League.

A look at Silva’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points is fairly indicative of his debut campaign; up until the end of January, he’d played 22 games, scoring 1 goal, picking up 5 assists and 7 Bonus Points for a return of just 74 points, averaging just 3.3 points per game. For a player who started the FPL game priced 9.0 back in August, it was something of an understatement to view Silva as poor value in terms of Fantasy Investment.

Since February, however, the Spaniard seems to have found his feet within both the league and Roberto Mancini’s Man City system. The past 9 games have seen score 3 goals, pick up 3 assists and 11 Bonus Points for a 56 point return, or 6.2 ppg, more or less double his previous output.

Last Sunday’s home win over West Ham saw Silva at the heart of so many Man City moves, with a fantastic display that could have brought home far more than just 7 points for his Fantasy Owners. As our Members can see, this was far and away Silva’s most influential performance of the season and it seems that, in the absence of Carlos Tevez, his importance to City has only increased. Here’s a look at his displays in the last two home games, with and without Tevez.

This Average Position map shows Tevez (32) playing far up the field in the Sunderland game. Silva is just obscured by Mario Balotelli (45), who started in the middle of the front three, with Yaya Toure (42) fielded in defensive midfield.

Against West Ham, Silva (21) is virtually in the same position, but the crucial difference here is Balotelli. Playing as the lone forward on Sunday, the Italian’s position, rather than being similar to Tevez, shows a different interpretation of the role, as he played far deeper than the Argentine.

This meant that when in possession there was no Tevez to play forward to and Silva, popping up all over the pitch, became the main outlet time and again. Yaya Toure, back in his familiar berth at attacking central midfield, was City’s most forward player on average, as his endless energy saw him bomb forward and cause the Hammers problems from deep. City kept the ball much better, and had 60% possession against West Ham compared to 50% against Sunderland.

A look at Silva’s passing chalkboards in the two matches is revealing. He made 43 passes against Sunderland but against West Ham his distribution almost doubled, as he made 75 passes in an altogether more threatening performance, despite the match finishing 2-1 to the hosts.

A look at City’s shots also confirms they had more attempts in the West Ham game, with 21 shots (5 blocked) compared to 16 shots (5 blocked) versus Sunderland. Silva, in particular, managed 4 shots against the Hammers but just 1 in the Black Cats demolition, another example of an increase in his attacking potency.

With Tevez still only rated 50-50 for the FA Cup Final and Edin Dzeko failing to make much of an impression, it appears Balotelli is likely to continue leading the line for City, a good omen, perhaps, for Silva Fantasy Owners ahead of the upcoming double gameweek (eve & TOT) and beyond (STK, bol). Let’s hope the City boss chooses not to follow up on his weekend hint of rotation, then.

think it's one of those bastard fpl situations where you wont know until you see his name on the team sheet. no news yet anway, don't recall bolton being great for team news, scottish managers seem to like keeping their cards close to their chest, not like these europeans who give us percentages and raised eye-brow elevens in their press-conferences

Rather than spend my week posting "I don't think City will keep clean sheets, so Kolarov/Lescott etc aren't worth it", I am going to say this:

Every DGW, particularly this season, we all think that a team don't have form going into it, they haven't been keeping clean sheets, and it is not worth the investment on current form, and time, and time again, the DGW team defies all odds and does the complete opposite of what logic and analysis point to.

So I say, go with your gut, go with Kolarov because he is "due" some attacking points, go with Dawson cause you never no.

Oh, JP, I knew I should of played Luiz and Huth! 😉

        😳

To be fair, Huth didn't score (the chances were obviously quite low) so it came down to which team kept a clean sheet. Blackpool failed to score for the first time at home, and Sandro scored a howitzer from totally out of the blue. These things happen!

Struggling for points with my cheap defence and this GW does not look promising either. Been a bit lucky the last few weeks as there have not been that many clean sheets around. Think I may just gamble and hope that continues and just carry on rotating midfielders and forwards for the last 3 GW's.

No, because Sunderland are still likely to concede 2-3 in every game at the moment, which means -1 for Onuoha from the get go almost, also, much like when Chris Samba played up front for Blackburn at times last season when they were chasing games, just because they are playing up front doesn't mean they will be scoring, not for me.

Everytime someone writes a comment like this I lol- what's a manager supposed to say? "Generally I think we get a good deal from referees and I hope this continues." All of Europe's most successful managers ALWAYS complain about refs and try to make out their clubs get a raw deal because they KNOW it could give their club an advantage. People are just jealous that managers like Fergie and Mourinho are slightly better at it than anyone else. 😉

I think that referee's need to come down harder on that kindof stuff, if it was a first yellow, it should certainly be a second yellow, this is what leads to inconsistancy. I know the aim is to leave as many players on the pitch, but, rules are rules.

He did it twice- plus it was in a MUCH bigger match. It also changed the outcome of the match, and finally it's impossible to know whether RVP would have scored whereas Henry's directly led to a goal.

It was going over RVP's head anyway, or at least it was too high for him to score. No denying it was a penalty offense though.
Anyway as I said the other day, had he been sent off and a penalty awarded who is to say Arsenal would have won.

behave, it was as close to rvp's head as his eye brows. he may have missed the header, (it's fair to say as he was so close to goal and it's rvp he would have scored more often than not imo) but it was slap bang on his head. the real loser here is walcott as that cross was a gem and he could do with a boost to his crossing reputation

Obviously not. The stakes were far higher when Henry did it, plus had Ireland gone on to win the game not half as big a fuss would be made over it. Poor comparison.

I think it's a perfect comparison. they both committed exactly the same offence. The only difference being that Vidic denied a goal, whilst Henry helped score one.

I don't think the importance of the match has any significance to the crime, it just means people get more upset about it.

Plus, Ireland probably still wouldn't have won.

Maybe not but Ireland were all over France in that match, and were winning 1-0, we had the momentum, we wanted it more and that just killed our spirit. France were abysmal that game

The stakes do have a significance, if that was as big a game as next Sunday's and United won it and went on to win the title because of it, there'd be killings and Vidic would be as despised as Henry, but because it wasn't and united didn't, he's not hated.

Henry also did it in the last minute, basically as a last resort.

Vidic must have known that the referees wouldn't punish him. There's no other excuse for cheating so stupidly like that.

Of course it was stupid! Had the linesman not been on the Utd payroll, Vidic would have been sent off, and Arsenal would have had an even easier chance to score than RVP's potential header. It was in the first half an hour as well. Moronic stuff really.

It was different in the sense that henry pretty much knew his action would lead to a goal, whereas vidic didn't know whether RVP would have scored. It's cheating either way though obviously.

in a way yes, cheating is cheating. this isn't a vidic thing it's a hypocrisy thing and the occasion and stakes shouldn't dictate what's worse imo. you could probably find an example of the majority of footballers cheating, because they want to win, some cultures just don't stereotypically have an inbred sense of guilt attached to it via old-fashioned morals like sportsmanship.

I'm afriad the rule book would disagree with you though- one's a yellow card offence and one a straight red....

imo it's the difference between a cynical tackle to prevent a counter attack and a last ditch challenge hacking down a player who's clean through on goal.

vidic wouldn't have done it if he didn't sense danger. he's a dog fighter and he reacted, the same way he reacts when he gets turned by a quicker striker, he hauls them down unfairly

I think one of the things that made some people come out against Henry so strongly was that he wasn't perceived as being "that sort of player." The implication being that he'd betrayed his values. (Whereas Vidic like most central defenders always tries to win at any cost)
