Our Watchlist player rankings for the final three gameweeks of the season have now been updated and can be viewed in your right-hand sidebar as usual. Our analysis of the current standings is being split this week, to allow us more time to discuss the options available and the reasoning behind the new standings.

We begin by looking at the options available in goal and in the back four, and with clean sheets at a premium at this late stage, there’s clearly greater emphasis on supplementary points when it comes to assessing transfer targets. Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Save Points and Bonus come into play more than ever, while there’s never been a better time to invest in defenders who pose a precious goal threat. Finally of course, the double fixtures for both Man City and Spurs hand their players a short-term boost which promotes them in our thinking.

Joe Hart’s position at the top of the keeper rankings is safe and, despite his hefty Fantasy price tag, he is set to enjoy a renaissance when it comes to investment over the next few days. City’s four fixtures should return at least one clean sheet, while Hart’s propensity to earn Save Points is proven and should come into play for the crunch clash with Spurs.

Hart’s opposite number Heurelho Gomes is under fire following his Stamford Bridge calamity. It may seem folly to consider the error-strewn Brazilian but Harry Redknapp has stated that he will stand by him and, coupled with a double fixture and home matches against Blackpool and Birmingham, there’s enough to earn Gomes the second spot in our rankings. Available for 5.2 in the FPL, investment in the Spurs defence comes down to Gomes’ Save Point potential versus Michael Dawson’s goal threat and his chances of earning Bonus Points. With other targets available to us in defence, Gomes looks the better option for those who can’t find the funds for Hart.

While that pair are already the most “transferred in” keepers in the FPL this week, West Ham’s Robert Green, priced at 4.8 in the FPL, provides an option lower down our rankings for those searching for a mid-price solution. Again, Save Points are the draw here with the Hammers perhaps unlikely to earn shut-outs given their current form, despite facing decent fixtures over the run-in.

While the aforementioned Michael Dawson remains a tempting option for double gameweek investors, we’ve placed the centre-back in fifth spot in our defender rankings with the likes of David Luiz, Leighton Baines and Aleksandar Kolarov all better placed. Bolton’s Gary Cahill is also ranked above the Spurs man with fixtures that hand him opportunities to fetch at both ends of the field. We will bring you an in-depth look at Cahill’s potential over the remaining games later this week.

Kolarov’s position at the top of our rankings is perhaps controversial. There’s every chance that the Serb will fall victim to Roberto Mancini’s purported plans to rotate ahead of the weekend trip to Goodison but, with doubts still surrounding the availability of Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta, we’re expecting to see Kolarov make at least one appearance in the gameweek. There’s even a possibility that we’ll find him taking up a left-midfield role should Mancini look to strangle Tottenham’s threat on the flanks when they visit Eastlands. Above all, Kolarov’s booming left-foot and set-piece involvement is enough to keep him simmering above team-mate Joleon Lescott who himself, may get rotated when City visit his former club Everton at the weekend.

With attacking potential remaining key to our defensive targets, we’ve kept Robert Huth high in our rankings, despite the fact that clean sheets look very unlikely over Stoke’s daunting last three fixtures. Huth has home matches with Arsenal and Wigan and, given his goal output this season, it would be no surprise to see him notch another strike before the curtain falls.

Sunderland’s Nedum Onuoha is without doubt the most intriguing selection in our rankings. Steve Bruce pushed the big defender up front against Fulham on Saturday; desperate measures with the Black Cats trailing by a 3-0 deficit. Onuoha has experience in the striker role as a youngster and could well be called into service for Sunderland’s remaining fixtures given the lack of a physical presence available to lead the attack. Even if he starts in defence, there’s every chance that Onuoha will be thrown up front should the Black Cats need to chase games as they battle for every point.

It represents a big gamble given the porous state of Sunderland’s back four, but he would certainly offer a differential with perhaps more potential to deliver than the likes of Jose Enrique, Wayne Bridge and even the cheap option offered by Liverpool’s John Flanagan. If you’re in the market for an end of season minor miracle – Onuoha looks the most likely option amongst the defensive candidates available.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    1. I think Arbeloa is a good right back. Never spectacular but always good.

    2. I think Busquets is absolute world class. His passing and handling of tight situations is out of this world. He's also one of the biggest tw*ts I have ever seen play.

    3. The Iniesta pass for the 1-0 goal is incredible

    That's all!

Did the ref give a single foul against Barcelona all night? Not that I can remember. There were a couple on the edge of the box that were blatant fouls, and the free kicks could have led to good opportunities.

    Alonso is sooooooooooooooo good.

One thing you can do is look into the iTrip or similar. Basically it's a small radio broadcaster that you plug into your iPod. You can then pick up the signal using the car radio. Not always crystal clear but definitely listenable.

it has become the norm my friend. last match, madrid at home, the press instead of discussing the red (atrocious decision) spent the whole time criticizing mous tactics. i am afraid they have become the norm not only here but in the world, although I am hopeful because I think globally Barsa's true image is slowly coming out.

I concur. Mourinho clearly had a plan to keep it tight at home and take the 0-0 with a view to being a little bit more expansive away and grab an away goal. It's a tactic that has worked very well for him in the champs league, particularly at Porto. I couldn't understand the critics, it's a modern style that many clubs use in Europe, a 0-0 home draw in the first leg of two is often a decent result in tight match ups.

Huge player for us, we've had a nightmare of a season for injuries. Lost Rhodes, Roberts and Pilks for big chunks of the season, not to mention Damien Johnson for the season, at a point when he was controlling every game.

Figured out the reason why I dislike Barca so much and it's essentially down to the fact that they are too good.

I find that them having the ball so much is incredibly tedious and a bit boring to watch which means that they just stop the other team from getting anything going.

I appreciate that the football that they play is incredible but I think we'd all prefer to watch a game like Arsenal - Tottenham which finished 3-3 with lots of goals and chances than a Barca 2-0 win when they have 75% of the possession with the other team hardly registering a shot on goal.

Sorry about the rant, just had to get it of my chest!

all that possesion is within their back 4 or 5 if you count busquets...

there are teams like arsenal, villareal, even dortmund, that play a beautiful possesion game, barsa is not one of them. look at every title they have won and tell me one critical match where there hasnt been controversy...

true, but again, very much controversy. a clear pk to ronaldo not calle dhtat woulda left em with ten, and then the 3-0 offsides when madrid was pushing forward the most.

again, controversy controversy always in critical plays.

i shouldnt have to push this issue in a british website, im guessing a lot of people here are londoners and a lot support either chelsea or arsenal, they have suffered this in their own skin.

I'm not a fan of either side, but I do think I can spot when something's wrong. You can't actually say that these two games have been objectively reffed? WTF was that today in the first half every time Real broke play there was some weird foul called on the Barca players? I remember one "foul" on Puyol by Di Maria, which would've led to a 2-1 for Real, where Puyol stumbled himself and Di Maria barely touched him. Then there was the Ronaldo "foul" and about half a dozen other ones.

I think the first leg was badly reffed but that today's game was all right (I missed the first 10 minutes playing basketball).

The Higuain goal should never have stood and it's insane that people on here seem to think so. Not even the RM players complained.

jguti14 is suggesting there is a conspiracy from the UEFA trying to help Barcelona, and bafflingly that has been accepted by plenty of football fans. To be perfectly honest I think Real were incredibly lucky to finish tonight's game with 11 men.

Dunno about any conspiracies, but there's clearly some biased refs and decisions out there. You'd have to be naive to think that football is a clean sport nowadays. Prime example is the World Cup... watch most of if not all games and there was clearly a trend which you could notice early on that Spain would meet Holland in the finals.

Because he can't foul someone just because he was fouled in the first case. I think the correct decision would've been an RM free kick. In a great position - no doubt.

jguti14 - First of all I agree that it was mental to award Barca the free kick for the Ronaldo 'dive' as I think he did.

But - if he played the advantage for RM from the start then it doesn't mean CR7 can foul Mascherano without giving away a free kick, and he clearly did foul him even if it was unintentional.

I'm still on your side here! Was agreeing with MAD. Virtually every time tonight that Real had a chance of breaking with numbers, the ref pulled it back because of some mysterious 'foul' on a Barca player. He was also extremely reluctant to give Real free kicks in advanced positions.

                    Fouls: Real - 27, Barcelona - 3.

As a United fan its not often you're in a win win situation but if we get to the final we have nothing to lose. No-one expects us to win anyway and if we do then we've beaten a team a lot of people consider one of the best ever.

I'll probably need to study him closer. I've watched much Real Madrid in the league all my life and my initial opinion was that he was rubbish defensively but he has improved in that area lately. Still have the feeling he's going on offensive raids too often leaving the rest of the defence exposed.

Absolutely agree. He has been fantastic all season long. Including tonight, nothing he could do about Iniesta's obscenely good pass to Pedro. Definitely ahead of Evra, and probably Cole (in 2011). He's still no Jose Enrique though 😛

his improvement this season is outstanding, definitely the works of Mou. He is ultra aggresive, and much better going forward. sure he leaves gaps in the back, but you can't expect an offensive back to go up and not leave a hole...

As a Utd fan (boo hiss etc), I can't see why the result this year won't be the same as 2 years ago. They'll have the ball for pretty much the whole match, score when it all comes together, & M Crick will be playing again. The only thing Utd do have this time is a forward playing on the shoulder of the last def. If things can be different, I'm afraid it'll have to be upto him. Over to you Chico... I think United are best of going for the kill - the approach to start with caution and see where the game that works so well mostly won't work against Barcelona. A few teams have rattled Barcelona in home games in the CL, most notably in the second half where there seems to be signs of nervousness from time to time there might be a window to run them over.

I don't think the fact we are already safe and Wolves are in a relegation battle matters tbh, I just have a really bad feeling about this one. 1-0 Wolves.

He is sharp, I'm going to put this out there but I think if Wolves play 442 we will beat them pretty convincingly, our midfield will just carve through them and their defence is useless. If they play 451 I think we'll struggle to play our quick football and they'll scrape the win.

They prob can't even field 2 forwards given their injuries up front. Only Fletcher available methinks.

Sandbox managing for a moment ... what if United were to put Rooney in midfield? Some steel and vigor in the midfield, use Fletcher for a holding middie, Valencia and (ugh) Park on the wings ... Hernandez and the brooding Bulgarian up front.

Nani 'impact sub' ... any crazier than the actual lineup two years ago?

Giggs has to have a role from the start.
I wouldn't start Nani. Ever since the Carragher assault he hasn't been the same.

His inability to play on the left worries me that the Ashley Young rumours could be true. I'd be raging if that's the case, he is not a top 4 player.

Ashley Young is almost as overrated as Defoe imo 😛 When has Young ever done good against top6 teams? He's a flat track bully and not even that spectacular at it. Has a decent cross on him though. Don't understand why Nani always has to cut inside even if he's basically ambidextrous and could go around and cross on his left.

They said the same about Dwight Yorke and Atkinson wasn't even playing him most games. I remember when SAF bought him for 12m and everyone said WTF. Then he came and conquered. The point I'm trying to make is that, some players will only show their true potential when playing at a bigger club with different ideas, different work ethics, different fitness regimes. Young could be that kind of player or maybe not, but I would always place my trust in SAF to spot a player.

I'm not inherently against signing ashley young- but just feel that there are MUCH bigger fish to fry in terms of midfield purchases and that he's basically a luxury purchase.

Rooney has been playing in midfield of late, or at least joining them. It worked against Chelsea because Essien has been so bad this season. It worked against Schalke as they were rabbits in headlights in the first leg. It didn't work against Song though. He had aches of space at the emirates and used it well. If Song could do that, imagine what the Barca trio would do!

Song was actually pretty good in that game. They need to put him on shackles like against Utd. None of that joining the attack like he's been doing earlier. It all started when he scored a few goals last season and thought he'd become a striker in his head 😀

On the Arsenal subject..... has anyone else noticed that when Sagna gets the ball in a wide attacking position that the Arsenal attack comes to an abrupt end when he crosses high to the defence EVERY time?

FFS Wenger get him to cross on the ground. ON THE GROUND

This is because they play without a centre forward. Van Persie is all over the field when he should be in the box.

And also because their wingers don't go for the far post enough, which is a result of your statement as RVP don't draw enough defenders towards the first post as he should.

Before any Arsenal fan object - fine if you don't want to do this, but then don't cross it so much! 🙂
