After being substituted in the 53rd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool last Sunday, Rafael Van der Vaart – who also scored the opening goal in the match – has confirmed that he is suffering with a stretched calf. The influential midfielder has stressed that he will do all he can and battle on to prove his fitness ahead of the final game of the season against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.

Connecting with fans through his official Twitter account, the Dutch international made the announcement:

“Stretched my calf a bit last Sunday against Liverpool but will do everything to make the last game of the season!”

Van der Vaart holds a very healthy Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership (27%) and, with his early withdrawal at Anfield, those managers – including 8 of the top 10 FPL – will have been anticipating an announcement. Today’s news will be met with a mixed reception however. While Van der Vaart seemingly has a chance of figuring in Sunday’s game, he could also miss out entirely or have his pitch time cut considerably once again.

Even though he has been considered a doubt since the victory at Anfield, media silence on Van der Vaart’s situation, together with his reputation this season, has seen him climb to fourth in our Captain’s Poll with 10% of the vote. A home clash against a faltering Birmingham offers potential profits and the Dutchman is understandably a leading contender for the armband. Van der Vaart has been in FPL staple for many a Manager this term, fetching a tally of 165 points which includes 13 goals and 9 assists.

For many this final gameweek could prove crucial and, with Van der Vaart holding such a prominent place in a high number squads, his situation over the coming days will need to be monitored carefully – the midfielder’s appearance on Sunday looks likely to have major significance to our fortunes as Fantasy Managers and those of Birmingham City. Would Anderson be a good midfield call for this game. The last time a MU "reserve" team got a run out he was on fire and will want to show SAF he's a good option for cup final

Chances of Rooney playing are slim to nil. Go for Tevez or Berbatov, who will be gunning for the scoring title.

I need to protect a 12 point lead for a big $$$ prize

Here are the current squads (my squad first, opponent's second):

    Foster / Gomes
    Begovic / Al-Habsi

    Luiz / Luiz
    Baines / Lescott
    Kolarov / Dawson
    Coleman / Carr
    Djourou / Stearman

    Lampard / Lampard
    Yaya / Yaya
    VDV / Silva
    Dempsey / Walcott
    N'Zogbia / Adam

    RVP / RVP
    Odemwingie / Drogba
    Zigic / Ameobi

I would like to bring in Fletcher for Zigic, and probably captain N'Zogbia. Thoughts? I am a bit concerned that I won't have 3 defenders playing (again).

Lots of talk about individual players to bring in (Fletcher, Berbatov, NZog etc.)

....but to rewind slightly, which teams do people think are most likely to score a few goals this weekend? (bearing in mind being desperate for points, home/away etc.)

Ordinarily you might say Man U, Spurs. But not too much leaps out of the fixture list.

It would be all very well Wigan saving their Premiership status by snatching a 1-0 win at Stoke, or Wolves and Blackburn playing out a stalemate, but that's not going to put many fantasy points on the table.

    Hey guys,

Any suggestions for my team this week?

    Foster (Mignolet)

    Terry, R.Johnson, Walker (Djourou,Smalling)
    Nani, VDV, Lampard, Adam, Toure
    Zamora, RVP (Rooney)

I'm protecting a 17 point lead, do you think its worth makin a double transfer?

Thinkin of Rooney and a midfielder out for Berbatov/Tevez & Nzogbia.

    Cheers & all the best

    Howdy,

I'm looking for suggestions as to what to do for the final game week. I am 22 points infront in my league, but I have Rooney and the following defence:
    Clichy Luiz Walker Bardsley Baird

I want to get Tevez in for Rooney, but should I take a four point hit to trade one of my defenders? Clichy and Luiz may not play and Baird definitely won't.

I also have VDV and Silva in the mids ...
