Part two of our Scout Picks preview of Sunday’s season finale switches attention to the midfield, often the most profitable area of our squads this term.

While the heavyweight mainstays of previous seasons – Frank Lampard, Cesc Fabregas and Steven Gerrard – have proved unreliable, we have become increasingly dependent on mid-price midfield acquisitions, pumping our cash into a forward line where expensive big-hitters have delivered with some consistency. Our end of season Scout Picks selection is somewhat typical then…

The Midfield

Jamie O’Hara’s influence on Wolves has been substantial since his arrival on loan from North London. Early on, handsome Fantasy returns looked assured – two goals in his first five appearances for Mick McCarthy’s side suggested that O’Hara would represent a huge Fantasy bargain. While those expectations have been tempered by a lack of goals since, few can deny that O’Hara’s overall influence always puts him in the frame for returns. An assist last weekend made up for a lack of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus but, prior to this, O’Hara had returned 11 Bonus in his last 10 starts. If Wolves can carry their current form into Sunday’s crunch encounter with Blackburn and earn a positive result, O’Hara looks highly likely to reward his Fantasy owners with returns.

Charlie Adam’s season was turned on its head by a wave of speculation around the January window. It’s taken time for the Scot and Blackpool to recover from that period, but there’s little doubt that Adam has rediscovered his hunger and form at just the right time for the Tangerines.

The trip to Old Trafford presents a unpredictable scenario but it’s surely certain that Ian Holloway’s side will go on the attack – goals looks certain. Should the visitors penertrate what is expected to be a second-string United defence, Adam would seem likely to play some part. His set-piece delivery, assured spot-kicks and range of passing from midfield will surely be a factor, and having scored a rocket from open play in the 4-3 win over Bolton, Adam will have the confidence to fire in efforts on the United goal.

Charles N’Zogbia’s selection is no surprise – his form in recent weeks, culminating in his injury time winner to sink West Ham, has given Wigan hope of survival. The Britannia is far from a desirable venue for a do-or-die fixture but the Latics will arrive with optimism having earned the dramatic win over the Hammers. N’Zogbia is pivotal to Wigan’s attacking play and, should they emerge with a result, looks a firm favourite for yet more FPL Bonus having already gathered 33 points so far this term.

The final midfield slot goes to Arsenal’s Theo Walcott – a surprise selection perhaps, but a player who offers cover for the Gunners’ attacking potential at Fulham. Walcott has gone four starts without Fantasy returns having last notched in the 3-3 draw at Spurs in gameweek 33. Alongside Robin Van Persie however, Walcott is likely to be Arsenal’s major threat to the Fulham defence at the Cottage in a game which the Gunners need to win to have any chance of claiming third spot and avoiding the indignity of the Champions League qualifying rounds. Ten goals in the last 5 away trips suggests that Arsenal will find the net, despite Fulham’s impressive defensive record at home.

Tottenham’s Luka Modric came close to inclusion but I just don’t see Spurs returning too many goals at home to a Birmingham side scrapping for survival. Van der Vaart’s absence will come as a blow to creativity and, while Modric will likely be on spot-kicks, the Croatian has returned just 3 goals and 3 assists this term. He will likely require Bonus in a Spurs win to earn profits for his owners.

There’s much speculation about Alex Ferguson’s lineup against Blackpool, with Nani’s selection the key factor in Fantasy terms. Should the Portuguese winger start on Sunday, he would be backed for returns but his selection is far from assured having been omitted from Ferguson’s list reeled off in Friday’s press conference. Anderson is a certain participant however and, at just 5.5 in the FPL, he represents a punt for those looking for a differential – enough to earn him the slot on my bench.

Elsewhere, Fulham’s Clint Dempsey will be a major threat to Arsenal at the Cottage and could even be pushed up front with Moussa Dembele absent through injury. Newcastle’s Joey Barton will also be looking to end his impressive season on a high against the Baggies. Both players have been popular Fantasy signings over the course of the season and appear to warrant selection by their owners going into Sunday’s climax.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i had the mighty boselli at the start of the season. man that seems like a long time ago. If id started the season with Drogba (c) and not Lampard, maybe i'd have broken into the top 1k this year... but who knows 🙂

I know Spurs have let us down so many times this season. But I feel, last day of the season, in the May sunshine, buoyed by the Liverpool result, and facing a team in freefall, they may relax and live up to their potential.

    A little help please...

I’m unsure as to whether it makes sense to take a 4pt hit as insurance if Silva doesn’t play… the likely candidate being to replace Odem, as I'm keen on taking a hit for a defender...

I realize that its 4pts versus a potential 0 from Silva effectively making it only a 2pt hit… but I can see him playing a part in the game at the Reebok…

Already used my freebie on Rooney to Berbs…

    Any relevant thoughts welcome… thx

Here's a thought. Maybe the reason we have heard nothing about Silva is that there's nothing to hear. As far as I know there's nothing to say he was injured much in the first place and a club is much more like to say if he's injured than if he's fit.
He stays for me anyway. 🙂

I think Kuqi will be given pitch time but not much. He might well start Ameobi and Lovenkrands and depending on how the match goes throw on Kuqi and Best. That's the likeliest. Fletcher of Wolves is a slightly safer option too, but I think Blackburn will give them a tough match

We need to get at least a draw to finish in the top half/top of the midlands. I think it will be a draw, can't see us winning without a striker.

    Hi Guys

What transfers should I do this week (1 free), bearing in mind I only have 3 defenders likely to start and VDV, Rooney + odem wont play:

    A) Rooney > Tevez (no hit)
    B) Odem , VDV > Berba, Anderson (4 point)
    C) Rooney, Odem, VDV > Tevez, Berba, Anderson (8 point)

    My current team is

    Begovic (Carson)

    Coleman, Walker, Rafael, Johnson, Kolorov

    Silva, VDV, Walters, Lampard, N’Zogbia

    Rooney, Bent, Odemwingie

Also I’m 21 points behind my rival so I really need to go for broke this week!

Team is set for this week.

I caved into getting Berbatov after seeing Evra's comments, and looking over Blackpool's away form. It's not worth having Berbatov score a hat-trick and missing out. I wouldn't be too bitter either if he didn't deliver, there's enough reason to justify his inclusion.

    Begovic

    Baines, Kolarov, Simpson

    Lampard, Modric, Adam, Yaya Toure

    Tevez, Berbatov, Van Persie

(Foster, Van Der Vaart, Walker, Luiz)

Playing the home keeper, and it's Wigan we're talking about. Obviously if he doesn't play I'd get Foster anyway.

I can see Stoke knuckling down and shutting Wigan out especially if Wigan have one of those terrible games, which they're prone to do. Tottenham still have to hold onto to fifth spot, and the game will be open because Birmingham need to get a result.

I'd put money on over 2.5 goals in the Tottenham - Birmingham match.

I'm going to get Berbs too. Got a 35 pt lead in my mini league so, if he does squat then no problem.

Well for one, last time this champions league final situation happened, Ferguson rested the majority of the squad he chose for the final, not just the starting 11.

And probably more importantly Man United were getting rap for suggestions of fielding a weak team, so Ferguson named the big name players that will play... he would have named Nani in that list if he intended to play him.

                ... I don't think he will...

                I think...

                Ando Scholes Fletcher

                Obetan Berbs Owen

Well most people seem to think Nani won't start the final anyway. Even if he may be needed from the bench, i see no reason for him to not play on Sunday, or atleast be taken off after the hour mark, to keep him safe. It will hardly be a strenuous workout tomorrow either way.

Obertan played for the reserves yesterday, so i can't see him starting this game ahead of Nani. Evra is also playing too, and you'd think he's even more important for the cl final.

I see plenty of reason not to play on Sunday... CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL. It could well be a 120 minute affair... Nani crucial. He would have named him if he was gunna play. Ferguson wont take any risks, it doesn't make sense. Nani was the players player for United and gets kicked around a lot... FErg wont play him and risk injury.
