Brede Hangeland has built a reputation as an extremely accomplished centre-back in his four years in the Premier League. Ardent Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers will have been more than aware of his ability to fetch decent tallies prior to their inaugural 2010/11 selections. In past seasons he has attracted Bonus Point totals of 19 and 14 and helped establish Fulham as a defensively astute side with team-mate Aaron Hughes a dependable partner at the back.

The Cottagers did well to fend off interest from Premier League rivals and keep Hangeland on their books last summer. This paid off spectacularly as the defender achieved he highest FPL points total, became the club’s second top scorer and was ultimately hugely influential in helping Mark Hughes’ side achieve the very respectable eighth place finish.

The Statistics

Hangeland finished the campaign with 154 FPL points, the second highest for a defender in the game after Everton’s Leighton Baines – a strong return for a player priced at just 5.5 at the start of the season; by the end – Hangeland’s valuation peaked at 5.9. That’s a marked increase from Hangeland’s starting price for the 09/10 season when he was valued at just 4.5.

The 6ft4in defender once again collected a notable number of Bonus Points (12). This total would have perhaps been higher, were it not for the contributions of team-mate Clint Dempsey whose goalscoring feats saw him consistently play with the hearts of the Press Assocation’s Bonus judges.

Despite disappointing in this area, Hangeland more than compensated by developing a handy habit of converting Fulham’s set-piece deliveries. Having scored just a single goal in the two previous campaigns, Hangeland struck six times throughout the season – more than any Fulham striker.

Defensively his output was also tidy. Although under a new Manager, Fulham continued to display their fine defensive capabilities during 2010/11, particularly in front of their own fans and kept 14 clean-sheets – Hangeland was present for 13 of these.

The Prospects

Given this season’s goal tally, you would expect the FPL suits to ponder another price hike for Hangeland – a rise as high as 6.5 wouldn‘t be out of the question but it seems more likely that we will see him settle at 6.0.

That kind of valuation will likely provide a barrier for heavy investment, although the established partnership with Aaron Hughes should promise further defensive returns. A similar goal haul would be a big ask however, so much will depend on Hangeland’s ability to attract Bonus Points. Fulham will likely need a kind opening run if the Norwegian is to follow up his inclusion in our “Team of the Season” with early selection in our squads for 2011/12.

Well, it was ok I suppose, but nowhere near as good as the first one (maybe I was expecting too much after that). The gaps between anything funny happening were quite long at times, and only the Alan and Chang characters made me laugh really.

Worth a watch I suppose, you may well like it.

I never had him, and I hate all my minileaguers getting off the bench as 1st sub.

jimnastics - what we d in our minilleagues is set up monthly direct debits to one account so the moneys in there if someone doesnt pay a direct debit they are booted out the league and prize money recalculated, its the only fair way without paying so much upfront.

Question for Jamsiep or anyone else looking at this Paddy thing.

How did you calculate the £43-£45 return and bet sizes from the all the correct score odds and £100 stake. Trial and error or something more mathematical!?

Would be interested to know the maths behind it if its not trial error.

Which is fine - I just would like to know how one would arrive at the stakes you need to place to divvy up the £100.

When you start from a blank betting slip and £100 - how do you know you'll be looking at a £40+ profit and how do you know what stakes to place?

I've seen Jamsiep's stakes - how did he get there?

The initial stakes I posted were [sort of] trial and error. I'm a bit of an Excel noob, and was getting all sorts of control errors - where I'd end up with a closed loop. But I've got the hang of it now.

        Mathematical.

To ensure that the RETURNS from each possible outcome are the same, you need to make the stake inversely proportional to the decimal odds for the result.

I've done it all in Excel, and it's a little hard to explain the formulas, if I can work out how do, I might make a google document of it.

May I ask why only 100 quid? Can you pro rata this for 1k?

And also does the bet hinge on a free 50 quid bet going on bara to win also?

Paddy Power are only refunding the first £100 worth of bets staked on correct scores etc. That's why this only works up to £100.

It's nothing to do with a free bet on Barcelona to win. As it stands, if you place the bets I've outlined in the spreadsheet, you'll win just over £44 if Barcelona don't win. If they do win then all the bets will be refunded and you'll obviously break even.

I've personally then put that £44 on a Barcelona win, with a different bookmaker. So I'll win just under £50 if Barcelona win, and will break even if they don't!

haha brilliant. Everyone has to love bookie bashing 🙂

I think I might do that bet but I don't think utd have a chance so I'll prob just do 100 on Barca also which means the most I would lose would be 56 right?

                Cheers Jamsie,

Ps I dont know what you work at but if you get over your ff addiction you could be an asset to someone someday 😀

                  8)

Yeah, so if you whack £100 on Barcelona, you'll either win £100 (the odds have dropped to evens now at most bookies), or you'll lose £56.

Looking at it again I don't think Utd will win or draw so I might take my 100 euro bet refund value and place my 100 spread through Messi first goal scorer 4-1, pedro 15-2 and iniesta 12-1 hopefully safe in the knowledge that if someone else scores first I'll get my money back on the score bets with a barca win.

Knowhere near as safe as your bet but more upside potential I'd say.

Thats 50 on messi, 30 on Pedro and 20 on Iniesta leading to minimum 200 euro return or 100 proffit if one of them come in and break even if Barca win and someone else scores first.

There is also the chance one of these barca players could score first and Utd win?

                      Anybody got any thoughts?

The only element of trial and error is manually fiddling with the ratio bit at the bottom. That's there to manipulate the sum of the Actual Stakes to as close to £100.00 as possible. I'm sure there's a way of doing it without having to manually input the ratio, but it doesn't take too long, and now it's done, it's done!

If the odds have changed since I calculated it all a couple of days ago, then just change the relevant numbers in the ODDS column (the decimal odds will recalculate when you do that). The table will recalculate all the numbers, you just may have to fiddle with the RATIO, in order to get the sum of the ACTUAL STAKES as close to £100.00.

Hope this makes some sort of sense!

Also, if you aren't going to stake £100 total, then you can fiddle with the ratio until you find a total stake that you are comfortable with.

Thanks for the link it is a big help.

I went to the chat help on paddypower and was assured that there were no hidden clauses and if I placed those bets and Barca win, they would get refunded.

For those who haven't yet, bet365 will match any CL final bets with an equivalent in-play bet up to £50 so I will bet on a Barca win. Plus they refund all 0-0 draws.

no worries, I must have wound her up with all my questions but I had to make sure!

Am I fool to consider excluding the more unlikely score-lines from my paddypower bets?

In terms of a positive United scoreline I cannot see past 2-2 but you never know. Maybe I wait for the free in-play bet and place a bet on > 3 goals or something like that.

Not particularly IMO. I'd be astounded if United manage to score more than 2 goals in 90 minutes.

Worked out earlier, that if you remove all correct score bets with United scoring 2 or more goals, you can up the potential profit to £70.

Just done that myself using your link and it is just shy of £70 - betting on 0-0, 1-1, 2-2, 1-0, 2-0, 2-1.

If I stretch that to 3-1 and 3-2 the potential profit is around £57.

Just updated the spreadsheet with seperate pages for bets involving United scoring 3 maximum, and then 2 maximum.

Minimum profits (if Barcelona don't win):

Placing bets with United scoring up to 4 - £43.92
Placing bets with United scoring up to 3 - £49.74
Placing bets with United scoring up to 2 - £69.75

                    Nice work.

I may opt for the up to 2 option, place the same bet on a Barca win at bet365 and then use the free £50 in-play bet on >3 goals in the match which is currently 4.33.

I think that covers all bases.

Yeah i seemed to get constantly unlucky this year in the H2H and lost by 1 point on a few occasions. Once against you i think too! Oh well, maybe i'll give H2H's a miss next season (i say that now....)

That was right at the start of the season as well, you can’t hold that against me, ha! I had a few narrow defeats and a couple of draws myself so it is fine margins. Make sure you do the Reserve H2H League next season though, it is a harmless bit of fun and your luck may change. If you got the same score again you could easily get promoted – Tis the luck of the draw!

Not necessarily, as free bets don't always return the stake. So you'd get your £4 profit from a Man U win, but NOT the £10 free bet. Therefore, you'd have spent £10 to win £4.

How much price change can we expect over the summer? This was my first season playing so I don't know what factors effect price changes. Lamps for example whilst having poor total had a pretty good PPG, especially in the later third of the season. So how much do people expect: Fabs, Lamps, and Gerrard to be?

Basically paddypower are offering refunds up to £100 on correct score predictions if Barca win.

So follow jamsiep's excellent spreadsheet link. Place those bets and pace a cover bet with a different bookies on a Barca win.

Example, the bets for Utd < 3 goals tab result in a round £70 profit. Bet say £50 on a Barca win and if they do you win £100 plus all your paddypower bets back. if it is 0-0 for example, you win £20 because the Barca win bet has lost. Guaranteed returns.

On bet365 they offer equivalent in-play bets if you bet on the final, so I am doing my cover bet there.

If you feel risky bet the full £70 on Barca to win £140, but if Barca don't win you break even.

It's not much effort! You just have to place the bets outlined, and you effectively get a free bet of £44 on Barcelona not winning in 90 minutes! Or a free bet of £44 on Barcelona winning, if you decide to place all the potential profit on a Barcelona win at evens!

            Or just lock-in a £20 profit?

There's no way Nasri will join Utd. Players just don't go from top teams to other top teams. He'll just be trying to get more money in his contract like Rooney and Tevez earlier in the season.

Started plugging through the Head to Head leagues this week...

Results worked out. Relegations, promotions, non-movers etc and blah. Just have to write the article and analyse all the comings and goings.

Sneak Peak: Legend of the FFS lore "Wassup" has recovered from his 09/10 issues to qualify through the Reserve League.

I think you have to join the reserve league first when the code is given in July. Don't know how many qualify from that to the proper h2h leagues though.

Haha Piers Morgan really is an extraordinary man! Not only has he ripped into Rio, G.Nev, and Joey Barton on twitter. He has now put Danny Simpson and Wayne Routledge in their place for piping up!

"Ah..welcome @WayneRoutledge - only man ever to play for SIX Premier League clubs and not score for any of them."

"Trying to remember the name @dannysimpson12 - weren't you rejected by Man Utd?"

"Just heard you were also rejected by Royal Antwerp @dannysimpson12 - how ironic."

      MUCH RESPECT 🙂
