Harry Redkanpp’s last gasp deadline day capture of Rafael van der Vaart was quickly lauded as the signing of the season. The Dutchman arrived at White Hart Lane with proven pedigree and took little time to start demonstrating his worth on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy Managers who stood by, pondering Van der Vaart’s likely impact and just how Redknapp would integrate his talents, were quickly convinced. Three goals in his opening four appearances announced Van der Vaart’s arrival and, with six Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points arriving over that early spell, it was clear that we had a key Fantasy prospect on our hands.

The Statistics

A modest 7.5 valuation in the FPL game indicated early potential. When Van der Vaart delivered, the scramble to acquire him began in earnest. The brace against Villa in the gameweek 7 home win sparked almost 200,000 “transfers in” and, by gameweek 15, a full 1.0 had been added to his value.

Van der Vaart was far from a “fire and forget” signing however. Concerns over his fitness and stamina, compounded by several periods of absence through injury, meant that the Dutchman’s Fantasy owners remained on their toes.

Despite his importance to Redknapp’s side, Van der Vaart’s longer spell of consecutive games was nine from gameweek 30 onwards. He was still subbed in four of those matches and, ironically, this was also Van der Vaart’s least profitable run of matches.

However, there’s little doubt that Van der Vaart produced the goods. His 13 goals and nine assists were rich returns for a first season in England, backed by a generous 19 Bonus Points from the Press Association representatives who quickly established him as a favourite.

Dominance at set-pieces and spot-kick taking duties boosted his potential hugely and our Members OPTA stats continually indicated that, in terms of goal threat, Van der vaart had few peers in the midfield bracket.

The Prospects

There were clear issues this season with Van der Vaart’s role in Redknapp’s starting XI. He flourished early on in tandem with Peter Crouch, playing just behind the lanky striker. However, with Jermain Defoe back in the picture and Roman Pavlyuchenko showing form that saw the Spurs boss hand him regular starts, Van der Vaart was pushed out to the right-flank. That’s a role that is far from assured given Aaron Lennon’s spritely form; Fantasy managers will approach Van der Vaart with a degree of caution next season as a result.

Van der Vaart will prove a conundrum. A price rise is inevitable given his impact this term and we can expect the FPL to deliver a value of around 9.5, possibly even 10.0. That would push him into the same bracket as the likes of Frank Lampard, Florent Malouda, Nani and Cesc Fabregas – suddenly casting major doubt over Van der Vaart’s place in our squads.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I remeber using my 1st wild card to get him in, see him rise 0.2 and selling him for profit... what an amateur move...

hopefully not too expensive next year

VDV was one of my better trades last season. Got him in early, made good value, sold him at the right time.

I think whatever his price next season, he will be - wait for it - essential.

If VDV is 9.5 or 10 I think he'll be a lot less essential. Injury concerns are annoying, but we're all still going to buy RVP. The position thing is a big problem with VDV, too many times because of where he was playing he looked too removed from being a goal threat. Perhaps with some squad changes or a different manager, the preferred formation will become clearer.

Lets face it, 442 or 451 is the same - VdV will end up playing in the middle of the field; if anything, he tends to play deeper when he is behind the striker.
VdV at less than 10m = first name n my team

That means 10.3% of the points scored by all your players combined were left on your bench. So low is good, and 10 isn't bad.

I still find it difficult to know when to jump onto a bandwagon and when to jump off.

Waited to long to get onto the Kuyt and DVD wagon. RVP wagon went well, only missed his first 10+ points haul.

Hanged onto Drogba waayyy to long.

What makes it difficult is that every week there will be some big scorers. No use in wasting transfers(and points hits) on getting those players in each week.

The trick is to pick the DVD's/Kuyt's out when they hit form.

Easier said then done of course.

Even more difficult is to drop someone like Kuyt when he is in form. I was just lucky with RVP. He kept scoring until the end. Kuyt ran out of steam the day I bought him.

I find the buying of a player(eg when I bought Young for his 18 pt haul) prior to hitting form a bit "easier". By just looking at their past history and upcoming games of course, it sometimes is obvious they will run into form again.

How I missed Lampard vs Blackpool I don't know
            🙁

Well done Tosey on that transfer.

Absolute train wreck! Fortunately Chelsea's good start, as well as Glen Johnson coming in week 2 for his 18 points vs Stoke, saved it all...

Pretty similar story this season really. We spend days and days slaving over choosing our initial side, and it almost always ends up a mess! It's why I bloody love the early wildcard play.

100.0 limit with no prem form to go off always makes for some interesting teams. Interestingly 2010/11 was my 1st pre season on this site and I've never had so many risky, unproven players in my starting team before. Just goes to show how hard it is to resist those pre season bandwagons when they're in full swing here, with so many making strong cases for the players to succeed.

For anyone who is interested I will be running the following league next season...

The 6 Million Dollar Man League

    The format is as follows

-It will require a second FPL team for each player
-Teams are only allowed players with a GW1 starting value not exceding 6.0 million.
-Standard points based mini league format.
-Some form of prize structure which I will arrange across the summer.

I think it could be a good laugh and will require some shrewd management and top scouting which could transfer into decent picks for your first teams.

Trying to guage interest so let me know if this appeals to you.

I will have to iron out the finer points but players value cannot exceed GW1 value of 6mil but price rises/falls are irrelevant.

With regards to players dropping down into the 6 million bracket I will give it some thought but the gerenal concept is no complicated I think you would agree.

With regards to a lot of the questions about the 6 mil cut off provisionally it will work like this.

Players eligible must can only be valued 6.0mil or less on the deadline for GW1.

If a player has a higher starting value than 6.0 on the deadline of GW1 but their value drops to 6.0 or below at some point during the season they become eligiblie for selection from the moment their price dropped to 6.0 and then for the rest of the season irrespective of any further price changes.

My company will sponsor the league and will put up cash prizes for the top 3 positions, highest single game week score and best team name.

I will set up a simple website with the rules and updates on eligilble players, league tables, prize information and a blog.

      Watch this space for updates.

I know you've all probably chatted about it already but does Berbatov's absence from the squad for the CL final mean he is out this summer? Swap deal for Modric or something perhaps? Or was he injured?

By the way, Yohan Cabaye is a Toon player now. Can't work out how he's going to fit in.

    ___________ST_________
    ________Ben Arfa______
    Jonas_____Nolan_______Barton
    __________Tiote_______

From what I understand he is a good player who is a box - box midfielder, I'm not a massive fan of Nolan's abilities though he has been a good skipper this season. I wonder if it is him who will miss out, or whether it suggests Barton is likely to leave.

Why did NEWC not offer Barton a new contract?

Berba not inj as far as I know. Appar he left stadium after being left out by Fergie. Fergie felt if the game was close Owen was a better option.

Can't beleive Man U only putting value of 7.5mill on Berba.

I'm not a massive fan of Berbatov but I acknowledge he is a good player, £7.5 is a bargain!
I think the Barton contract thing is just a game of chicken between him and the board. One will crack hopefully and the deal will be done.

there was the talk/rumour or whatever u want to call it of him leaving this summer in april when he was left on the bench against chelsea... genoa and juve were interested and willing to pay 9m to 12m for him this summer if he decides to leave and he is in his late 30's so he is not going to get more than 15 m anyway and he only has 1 year left on his contract...

saf thought that owen could have done more than berba as a sub if the game was tight in the end and he apparently he left the stadium but saf denied it later 😉
i think for berba should leave for his won career but he only has 1 year left on his contract so he might stay for another season...i think modric departure will depend if harry is there or not bcoz if he is still there i don't think he will allow modric to leave....

ben arfa will rotate and he may not be fit for the start of the season...no way pardew is going to drop ur captain especially when there are no leaders in ur team...

Eugh it is going to be a long summer...

The chasm between the end of one season and the start of another is almost as large as the one between the premier league's "best" and la liga's best. Note the use of quotation marks, that's right, I'm a frickin tosser.

And the month of pre-season friendlies that begin mid July is supposed to come as some kind of comfort to us. New England Revolution? I wish. And don't you lie to me, don't just make up a cup and expect people to care. Shame on you Audi, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach will be turning in their efficiently dug graves. Amsterdam cup? I once drank from one of those and spent many a willow-faced day in the genito-urinary clinic of my local hospital. Sure I'll just lump some cutelry in the front garden and let Europe's best battle it out there for the glorious Bovril cup.

You are supposed to look on and smile as your best players leave you like a jilted lover with an erection that won't subside. A moronic smile as you shovel one more mouthful of crunchy nut cornflakes into that hole in your dismal excuse for a face. All the while Mr. Pique unloads his own brand of salty ecstacy over the hips that don't lie.

And the sycophants multiply in number, and rightly so, as you have just watched Michaelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel in the same excruciatingly identical fashion as the last time. In some kind of repressed homoerotic nightmare you can just see it in your head, messi and co winding up the wet towels and whipping each other's bottoms in a playful manner before they take an unneccessary shower, there is no sweat to banish from their bleached anuses. Totally irrelevant but worth noting. Messi, into your hands I commit myself.

To the gossip columns of the nearest exploitative tabloid to try and squeeze some solace. What plank will your team try to obtain to bridge the gap larger than the abbyss that awaits all of us after Life's final whistle? A. Young... My god, my god, why have you forsaken me?

Reading is probably going to have the cheapest defenders if they go up. Probably 4.0 (Harte may be 4.5 though) like Blackpool this season.

QPR will have all the defenders at 4.5.

Long takes penalties though, assuming he stays - which he may if they go up.

Haha, way to shoot me down. I didnt know long was on pens, just assumed it was Harte due to his 11 goals this season, im assuming hes only scored from set plays 11 fks aint bad then.

I'm routing for the swans aswell.

You've prob been pounded with praise for the PP betting but cheers again for doing the math mate. I seen you posting about 11/10 both teams to score did you get on that aswell?

I think Harte has taken a couple, and I thought he was going to in the semi-final, but Long took the one away at Cardiff.

No worries, numbers is what I'm good at so I may as well try and make the most of it!

Didn't get on the BTTS bet, but had £50 on Messi anytime @ 11/8 with Bet365, and then used the free £50 in-play bet to back Barcelona after about 20 minutes @ evens. So with those two, and the £42 (generated from the correct score spread) on Barcelona @ 11/10, it was a pretty sweet night!!

    http://www.gibfootballshow.co.uk/2011/05/cabaye-bye-yohan-newcastle-bound-midfielder/

Looks like they rated him highly. Also looks like he might be a decent FPL prospect with his set pieces and pens. Suppose it depends on how they use him and if Ben Arfa is back for the start of the season.
