Grant Holt has arguably become one of the most recognised English footballers over the last few seasons to never play in the Premier League. Although some of this fame could be attributed to his celebrated “Movemberâ€charity moustache growing efforts, it has largely been due to the fact that, after years of promise, his footballing talents have finally gelled to great effect.

In Norwich’s two successive automatic promotions, Holt has been a key figure, chipping in with 45 goals and now he is set to be pivotal in their quest for Premier League survival. As club captain, Holt has successively won the Norwich City Player of the Season award over the past two seasons and has been the club’s leading scorer in both campaigns; despite recent signings in attacking areas then, Holt should firmly be in Manager Paul Lambert’s plans come 13 August.

But the Premier League is a tough testing ground and, if Holt fails to prove his worth in the opening weeks of the campaign, there are plenty of other players ready to take his place. Simeon Jackson and Chris Martin were already on the books as options, but Lambert has moved quickly to acquire the services of forward pair Steve Morison and James Vaughan who will both be keen to prove their worth.

The Statistics

Although it has been under the guidance of his latest club and gaffer where he has truly fructified, Holt has had some memorable seasons toiling away in the lower reaches of the football league.

After a unremarkable period at Sheffield Wednesday, Holt singed for Rochdale where he scored 34 goals in 75 appearances in Football League Two. He was then snapped up by Nottingham Forest and stayed at the City Ground until 2008, scoring 21 goals in 96 appearances and winning Forest Player of the Year in 2006-07.

By the time Forest had won promotion to the Championship, Holt had fallen out of favour. He continued scoring goals when transferred to Shrewsbury Town the following season however – 21 strikes in 43 appearances saw him pick up a string of individual gongs.

Since moving to Norwich, Holt has channeled all of his early career potential and found consistency, with 21 goals in 45 League games last season and 24 in 39 the season before, as well as further individual honours coming his way. Holt also has an eye for a pass and has assisted on 25 occasions for Norwich over the last two seasons.

The Prospects

Depending on the way you plan to prioritise your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) line-up next season, you may well be searching for a budget striker to complement a couple of expensive heavyweights such as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie or Carlos Tevez. Last season’s cheaper yet successful options may no longer be viable – West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, in particular, is surely due a significant rise in valuation.

With this in mind, Holt – who is likely to be priced at 5.0 or perhaps 5.5 – could come into serious contention. With 20 goals or more in each of his last three seasons, there seems to be no stopping Holt. It would be remarkable, and quite unlikely, for Holt to reach these highs again, but having seen DJ Campbell achieve double figures for Blackpool last season, it wouldn’t be unfeasible for Holt to creep to a similar figure. It’s worth considering that he is also the principal penalty taker for the club, a fact that will surely boost his season tally.

The sheer number of individual accolades picked up over the last few seasons indicate that, even when not scoring goals, Holt continually puts in a shift. He is therefore the sort of player he could quite easily attract the majority of Bonus Points within the Norwich lineup. On the flipside, his determination and graft have also led to Holt getting a bit of a reputation for giving away free kicks – he conceded 103 fouls last season so we can perhaps expect a spate of Premier League bookings after picking up 7 yellows last term.

Much depends on Lambert’s first-choice strike partnership decision, which will be duly revealed in pre-season and the opening weeks of the league, as to whether Holt is worth a punt. Initially as a budget option, the Canaries’ captain certainly looks like to be a viable option in the budget bracket.

Guys, who to captain in U21 fantasy out of Sturridge,Montoya,Dockal and Walker?Sturridge is the obvious choice but he has disappointed so far,so I was thinking maybe giving it to Montoya. He'll at least get a clean sheet against Ukraine.

lost on last article: Given the fixture list, what teams is everyone most interested in for the start of the season? I’d love to not use my wildcard in week 4 or whatever I did last season again! Fulham and Chelsea look quite good... QPR's fixtures look good, but I'm not sure if Taarabt isn't there!

It heavily depends on who Chelsea bring in imo, a defender is mandatory and if it's obvious who are going to be the attacking line-up then atleast one would be good.

Isn't Jol a very attack minded manager? If so it makes the Fulham defence less appealing but Dempsey wouldn't be too bad a bet.

Other than that I like the opening fixtures of Villa and the defensive sensibility of the manager.

      HANGELAND 6m - BAINES 7.5m - IVANAVIC 7m

      GERRARD 10.5m - FABREGAS 11.5m -TARRABT 5.5m

I agree 100% AB, Pearce has been woefull with the U21's.

The u21's may have got to a final a couple of years ago but they were seriously outclassed in it. England had every bit as talented players as the Germans and if they had some sort of system or plan (some people call this type of direction tactics but this seems to be a word which is alien to Pearce) they might even have won it (but at the very least they would not have been destroyed).

If you take this tourney on it's own one has to question his tactics of playing manciene in midfield. He has one of Englands outstanding prospects in Jack Rodwell (who is already a defensive midfielder) on the bench and also Phil Jones who is twice the player that Manciene is and who played in defensive midfield to great effect last season. So why play Manciene there when he cant pass water? Englands lack of creativity and inability to retain possesion is what cost them in the previous final to Germany and what is costing them in this tournament also and Pearce has to take the blame for this in the way he sets his teams up.

Pearce's only redeeming attributes seem to be his motivation qualities and his ability to organise a defensive back line. If England want to compete with the best in the world then their U21 teams need to be thought how to keep the ball under pressure situations and how to combat different playing formations and styles by adapting their own approach and to me Pearce is not the man to do this.

                  lovely stuff.
it's no co-incidence man city scored about 8 home goals in a season under pearce. you give him an assortment of 10 centre midfielders and he'll choose 2 lee cattermoles. he can make a side hard to break down as that requires hard work, organisation and motivation plus of course *pride/passion/desire/determination/grit/power/insert other cliche*.
it doesn't matter if you've never seen a pearce training session, you can confidently guess looking at him as a player and his teams he's managed that he wont improve england, simply try and get the best out of a failing system and philosophy.

Exactly my thoughts. Why can't the U21's be used as a stepping stone to the seniors leading to the cream of young England players coming into Don Cappello's squads with the knowledge of how different systems work and with the skills to be able to retain possesion under extreme pressure situations? Maybe we are being have too high expectations from England players and managers though?

Interesting, but I really don't think there's a comparison with the German u21 team that won it two years ago.

Neuer, Hummels, Khedira, Özil - look where they are now and compare that to the English lads.

Is there a fantasy competition for the Women's World Cup which starts next Sunday? The tournament is big news in host country Germany, not least because they're bound to win it, but there doesn't appear to be a game on the FIFA site.

Mind you, it's probably just as well, as this poor Hungarian player would end up in a lot of people's teams just because of her name...

i don't believe it's fully the players though, i think they're largely very naturally gifted players it's just tactically they've come through a system which is hugely out-dated and inevitably what is drilled into you at a younger age sticks. so i don't even think it's a case of technically they lag behind the likes of spain, netherlands, brazil etc. i think it's tactically, so how they apply that technique in games.
imo it's why lampard looks good surrounded by the likes of makelele and ballack and a foreign manager as the puppeteer. gerrard the same with alonso and mascherano. put the two together at international level and you see the contrast. it's not 'their games don't suit eachother' top tactically astute players can play with anyone. these more tactically astute players take the tactical burden off the gifted players like gerrard and give them a free platform to showcase their more instinctive natural talent.

Technique is most important. English players are no where near the europeans

Hence the hoo haw when someone like Joe Cole comes along who wouldnt be heard of in Spain or Holland.

It goes back to the coaching. Kick and rush, Physical giants over small lads, winning over learning.

that's kind of what i mean, how they apply their technique is all wrong. technically i think the majority are just fine it's only the pacy dildos who have a poor first touch etc. for example poking it around and waiting for the right killer pass as opposed to WE MUST SCORE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, THUMP IT FORWARD AND CHARGE!

Theres nobody in England with technique to match their europeans counterparts. And as you say the level of most is even further lower than this.

Jack Wilshire is a world apart from the top level ranks yet. He may get there but not yet.

Good technical players are very rare in England though.

I'd say a 12-year old Jack Wilshere wouldn't have been picked up by many other academies in this country.

just speaking from my experience of grass roots football in england and another country. in england a team-talk is 5 minutes of motivation and stating the obvious: "you defender, make sure you win your tackles" yes boss, before you reminded me i was planning on losing those tackles...
in belgium before a game one of our coaches drew every passing triangle that could be achieved in our formation on a white board, breaking the front 6 players into a series of about 8 triangles. we tried a 4-2-3-1 ten years ago in an amateur under 14s team because he thought it would suit the midfielders we had. back in england i play i usually play on the left "because you're left footed".

                    crouch length alert!

personally think it's over-generalised and not entirely correct that technically england lags behind its european counterparts. you don't consistently get in and around the FIFA top 10 if you're technically poor.
i think english players are technically fine with every skill needed BUT only in isolation. where i think england lose out to the very best countires are how they fuse together all those skills, therefore the tactical side of the game, not the technical side. this is a combination of being drilled into as you develop through the system and coaching once you reach the elite level. the tactical ability both individually and as a team to fuse together these isolated skills can make individual players look technically better than they are as they are making the right decisions on the ball. in england's case it's visa versa the lack of this tactical astuteness makes the individual players look worse technically then they really are.
on their own with their clubs it's harder to tell they lack this tactical astuteness as they're largely alone and surrounded by the spanish, german, argentines etc who have a better concept of fusing together these isolated skills. then they all come together in the england side and there's a surprised outcry: "why can't gerrard and lampard play together" "how can this group of players not win major tournaments together?"
take an example of shooting. all england's players are capable of bending the ball in the top corner in a match it may not come across as they are rushed into something snappy and less accurate as in their head haven't made the decision in their head which the spanish player may already have when the ball reaches him. the english player will still be thinking and will be rushed. as a result he may smash it wide while the spaniard curls it in the top corner. it's not because the english player doesn't have the technique to do it, it's tactically he hasn't made the decision in his head quick enough.
100% agree with the winning over learning thing but not the technical argument

I still think a lot of English players aren't as technically able. Indeed, we've just attempted to list the amount of technically gifted English players - there aren't many.

But yes, tactical intelligence is something English players lack. A lot of it is that gut over brains thing Simon Kuper talks about in that article you posted below.

I have seen people shout at kids when I walk past schools parks in London. In Africa they encourage kids to do all the things that you guys don't agree with.

montoya imo. seems wrong going with a defender but imo it's a safer bet for a spain clean sheet v ukraine than one of those attacking players getting a goal or assist

interesting article on stats and data analysis in football. here's a teaser:
Other data companies entered the market. Some football managers began to look at the stats. In August 2001 Manchester United’s manager Alex Ferguson suddenly sold his defender Jaap Stam to Lazio Roma. The move surprised everyone. Some thought Ferguson was punishing the Dutchman for a silly autobiography he had just published. In truth, although Ferguson didn’t say this publicly, the sale was prompted partly by match data. Studying the numbers, Ferguson had spotted that Stam was tackling less often than before. He presumed the defender, then 29, was declining. So he sold him.
