Part One of our examination of the Premier League fixture list lead us to explore the concept of pairing teams to establish chains of favourable home matches. While such matches are likely to be more profitable in most cases, they are by no means the single key factor; in Fantasy terms, a trip to Carrow Road could well be a far more profitable fixture than a home clash with Liverpool.

In this second part of our three-part guide for Members, we switch the emphasis away from home fixtures and focus instead on identifying favourable runs of opponents. To make things clearer, we’re splitting the Premier League teams into four discernible groups (roughly based on our Fantasy Premier League player value expectations) and will examine each team in turn, with the aim of identifying the periods or “windows” of the season that lend themselves best to investment.

I don't know enough about them to risk money on it. I like to have some smattering of knowledge about form and the like before taking on the bookies,no point giving them a head start.

Why aren't Sky showing the third place play-off today?

I know it means nothing really but it makes no sense showing the whole tournament and missing out one game.

With Chelsea's opening set of fixtures I'm hoping we see some positive indications in pre season on Malouda's position in the squad. He was coming into some good form towards the end of last season, sure he tends to disappear in the big games but he is a real flat track bully against weaker opposition. With Villa Boas surely going to employ a 4-3-3, and Chelsea lacking wide men I'm thinking he could be very important.

His stats are also impressive. 113 key passes (attempt assists) last season yet only 4 assists surely points to his colleague's wastefulness rather than his own. He did score 13 goals last season, none of which from the spot. The only downside as always is his lack of set piece involvement (especially when considering this in conjinction with his price). Still he defenitely deserves a spot on our shortlists.

I meant more so he was great for Hiddink in the last 2 months of the season or however long he was there.

I can remember him being good at the start of this one too, but Chelsea did have a very easy run to get their season underway.

I came up with a sort of transfer plan to get him into my team with no hits, by the time I could get him in he'd done nothing for about a month 😀

Do we see any challengers for his position though? If we're right in assuming Villa Boas will go 4-3-3 like he did at Porto, which is by no means guaranteed, I just don't see who they will play on the wings.

Right now Torres and Drogba could battle it out for the striker position. Sturridge and/or Anelka could be pushed out wide as could Benayoun but they all see like square pegs in round holes. I'd epect 2 or maybe 3 of the above to be shipped this summer. It all depends on who Villa Boas signs I guess, he will almost certainly bring in a wide player.

Also isn't it strange how Chelsea seemed to show little or no interest in A. Young? it seems they are really lacking in that area.

Fans of the african nations are in for a rough ride at the 2018 world cup.

In a just world until russia could clean it's act up it would not be allowed to host a world cup...but in this world Fifa make the decisions which basically means whatever fills their corrupt, grubby pockets the most and to hell with football.

And as for the 2022 world cup in 50 degree heat in a country with a population of 1.5 million even more of a joke.

If your talking racism then it's even more common in England and Germany than at Russian games. The world cup bids and how they are won are issues of FIFA. They are there to fairly select who gets to host an event. If they are corrupt then it only encourages nations to try whatever means they can to gain an advantage. You need to separate racism and corruption.

If I were to google "racism in Russian football", I bet I'd get shitloads of stuff just from the last few years.

if I replaced the word "Russian" with the word "English", I'd get a load of stuff from the 80s.

That is one of the most ridiculous posts I've seen in a long time.

          Racist murders in Russia -

          2005 - 28
          2006 - 21
          2007 - 37
          2008 - 49

The figures of the maimed and seriously injured people are in the thousands...and you were saying?

My point was Fifa would overlook the issues of racism in Russia if it benefited them finacially as they are a corrupt organisation, which was quite obvious I think.

I was responding to Tsar-D saying Racism is worse in England and Germany than russia which is just ridiculous.

I'm not insulting their country at all...

Fifa have already admitted they hadn't properly considered how to deal with the 50 degree summer heat when they gave the world cup to Qatar, they are now considering a winter world cup as a result.

Other countries with a similar population to Qatar are - Botsawna, Gambia, Gabon, Estonia, Guineau-Bissau, Lesotho, Latvia, Swaziland, East Timor, Djibouti. Now can you see any of them hosting the world cup any time in the future...of course not, what sets Qatar apart from them...money, lots and lots of money, what do Fifa love...money lots and lots of money.

It is also illegal to be gay in Qatar so what fifa are saying is "sorry gay football fans you can't go to the 2022 world cup for risk of corporal punishment, however they have loads of money so we don't mind".

Qatar is not a good choice to host the world cup for those reasons, but Fifa got rich so who cares eh.

Well, it's difficult to prove your point by providing stats of racist crimes only in Russia. I think when you compare things you should provide stats of racist crimes in Britain and Germany as well:

"The UK is amongst world leaders in the way that it responds to hate crime, but there is still much work to do,' he said.

"The latest figures showed there were 43,426 race-related hate crimes last year, 4,805 motivated by sexual orientation, 2,083 crimes by religion or faith, 1,402 by disability and 312 by transgender issues.
The UK is amongst world leaders in the way that it responds to hate crime, but there is still much work to do, he said."

what about Dick Advocaat's quotes about no buying black players for Zenit because the fans just wouldn't accept it? You'd never get that kind of thing in England these days.

re your points above: first of all, you've cited the Daily Mail, so you point therefore loses all credibility.

Also, there's bound to be more race-related crimes, etc, because there are more black & ethnic minority people. I'd say it's also more than possible that black people complaining about being racially abused would have many complains fall on deaf ears in Russia.

Remember - this whole debate is about football, and this debate started by someone posting a video of a black player being racially abused on the football pitch in Russia. How often exactly would you get that kind of thing here?

and El Hadj Diouf? as in him calling a ball boy "white boy"? If you're citing that, you're really struggling.

If you really think you'd catch a big club's fans in England protesting about having a black player in their squad?

                  A Newcastle player against Diouf.
They do protest now. How long have black pleople live, played and been in England? They faced this problems before. It took time to solve the most issues. Other countries are still getting to that stage and some will get their is less time.
Taking my family to games in Moscow has been more comfortable than in England or Germany. But again that's due to less targets for abuse in Moscow. Just listen to the language used in the stadiums so called non racist football countries. Try getting first hand experience in the places you talk about before you thing your an expert. Or keep on googling.

I'd have been disappointed if your argument was as simple as SD's. I do hold anything against most of your arguments but it's about accepting the fast that it unfortunately still exists in abundance in countries that have been dealing with the issue for decade. While other countries are in the early stages of dealing with this issue. This is no excuse that a country could not host a major event. Was at the Champions league final in Moscow, the England VS. Russia game. Ask fans of any of those teams how the events past? You won't hear many complaints except the lack of affordable hotels at that time. There is no reason Russia cannot host a great event and no banana will stop that.

I just can't be asked, because every bit of proof I throw you'll just throw it back and say England is just as bad, when it very obviously isn't.

I've cited Daily Mail because it was one of the first results of the google search. My point was that by stating some numbers of racist crimes in Russia Hunter S. Thompson just proved the fact that racism exists in Russia and not the fact that it's bigger/lower than in Great Britain/Germany. Any stats which help to compare Russia and UK would be OK here.

Regarding "more ethnic minority people", you must be kidding me, right?
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia
              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups_in_the_United_Kingdom
It's true regarding black people though.

"How often exactly would you get that kind of thing here?"
I remember there was a flying banana at the Scotland - Brazil game not a very long time ago.

In my opinion this whole Roberto Carlos episode looks very suspicious and seems to be a provocation. I would not be suprised if it was organised by "Russian football authorities" IN ORDER TO "start an anti-racial campaign", as a first step. "An angry Roberto Carlos leaves the pitch in protest" sounds impressive, right? Unless one takes into account that it was the 89th minute and the score was 0:3. If a fan wanted to abuse Roberto Carlos, why wait until the last minute and keep banana in a pocket during the whole game? Why aim at Roberto Carlos who is the most famous player in Russia? No doubt that this episode was well planned in order to attract as much attention as possible.

Concerning the whole "racism on football stadiums" talk, I disagree with Tsar-D, there is embarrassingly much booing at black players and too many nazis among "active supporters" in Russia. However, I do agree with Tsar-D that there have never been any problems at the big games. All these bad things happen just in the Russian Premier League.
The overall situation in Germany and England is definitely much better. And the system in England works much better because of the cameras on the stadiums which let easily identify those who commit crimes and the unavoidable punishment. In Russia, football stadiums are more kind of "areas of no responsibility", where you can do whatever you want. Installing video cameras and the new special law regarding football fans should hopefully improve the situation.

Anyway, no country is free of idiots, therefore some cases of abuse happen everywhere nowadays and will happen everywhere in the future unless there are no more idiots in this world.

The problem with Yaya last season is that everybody thought he was a defensive midfielder from Barcelona, when in fact, he is a brilliant box-to-box midfielder.

Not too sure about long passing but he's a better short passer, stronger, better in the air, more skilful and simply the better player.

Very risky team IMO, and surely no one in their right mind is getting Kolorov again this season. Kompany and Lescott are far better bets.

Gardner, April 2007: "I signed for Villa when I was 15 and since then these have been the best days of my life. I’m a Villa fan I used to be on the Holte End. I was there when we beat Tranmere in the League Cup semi-final. I was at the game when Bosnich saved the penalty and we all ran on to the pitch. When I was watching Villa as a kid there were people like Garry Parker, Atkinson and McGrath."

Gardener Feb 2010 “Everyone thinks I’m a Villa fan but I’m a Bluenose. I have been all my life.I was a mascot at John Frain’s testimonial."

    *facepalm*

Got to say, if he's good for one thing it's the quotes from a few years ago he comes uses to embarass people.

Anyone backing Switzerland tonight? I'm already on at 5/1 outright (VC amazingly left that market unattended on Wednesday evening by the way) but I think the 7/2 VC are offering on the Draw No Bet market is great value as well.

If you don't concede goals, you don't lose games and Switzerland simply don't concede goals; they've got a habit of scoring them as well. A strict line of form through Belarus gives them a definite chance so personally I reckon the difference in odds (1/4 - 7/2) isn't relective.

They have a decent chance, Switzerland and Belarus are similair in the way they both are tight in defence and they will take heart from seeing how Spain struggled to break down Belarus. If Switzerland copy Belarus' tactic of forcing the Spanish wide, they have an excellent chance because unlike Belarus, they are threatening in attack as well and have some match winners in their team.

It's a win or bust situation IMO. I've gone for 5 swiss at the back (including GK) for the differential. If they win to nil I could rocket into the Top 20 seeing as the shrewdies will mostly be picking Spanish. If they get gubbed, I'm a muppet!
