Even before the pre-season friendlies swing open their doors of summer distraction, competitive action is underway throughout Europe. Deep in the dark confines of the first qualifying round of the Europa League, those teams who finished fourth in the Belarusian Premier League kicked off against their Azerbaijani equivalents. Fulham also joined the party.

By virtue of topping the Fair Play rankings, the Cottagers got to enter the European ladder at the very bottom rung, thus giving Martin Jol little time to get to grips with his new surroundings. The Dutchman and the Craven Cottage faithful enjoyed a comfortable ride however – last night brought a first round first leg 3-0 victory over NSI Runavik – the third best team in the Faroe Islands…

Surprisingly Jol decided against resting his senior players for the opening tie. Despite the absence of Clint Dempsey and Carlos Salcido following their recent Gold Cup final exertions, Fulham fielded what was arguably their strongest starting XI.

Dempsey’s goals weren’t missed.Damien Duff and Simon Davies took up the mantle on the Fulham flanks and combined to conjure the opening goal on the half-hour mark. The home side then continued to pepper the Runavik goal but it took another half an hour before they added to Duff’s goal. Simon Davies earned a second assist on the night after he was felled in the box – Danny Murphy assumed spot-kick duties from Zamora to stroke home from 12-yards. Andy Johnson then provided Jol with a reminder of his talents, slotting the third from Zamora’s tee-up.

The Pre-season Guide
Our form guide for 2011 has been updated with the results and details of last night’s match. We’ve collated all the pre-season fixtures that lie in wait for all 20 Premier League sides. It’s not a complete picture as yet – Swansea are still sorting matters following their Play-off promotion, while Wigan seem to keeping their cards ever so close to their chest, at least for now.

Fulham have their second leg to follow in a week’s time before West Brom start their American tour on 12th July. A day after that one could argue Pre-Season officially kicks into gear with four teams (Arsenal, Liverpool, United and Sunderland) starting their preparatory campaigns.

You can rely on our guide to bring you all the latest results, scorers and notes on the current preferred lineups as we look ahead to the new season and another campaign of Fantasy Football takes flight.

I'd much rather Bobby be on pens. Nice opening fixtures, so could still be a good shout for a cheaper third striker from the off.

    So if Arsenal sell

    Fab - 35m
    Nasri - 20m
    Clichy - 7m

They could buy Gourcuff & Aguero

And play (I dont know too much about arsenal so correct me if wrong)

    Szcz
    Eboue Vermelean Djourou Gibbs
    Ramsey Wiltshire Song
    Gourcuff RVP Aguero

    Looks good enough to me.

M'thinks Samba and Vermaelen at CB, and switch Aguero for Gervinho (Ars are never buying the Argy). That midfield still looks weak to me, Ramsey surely won't be first choice from the off, if ever.

Yeah I have 2 guys penciled in from Villa: Bent and Albrighton and will probably get Zamora from Fulham if priced right. But have no idea who I would pick for Chelsea and City attackers.

AVB apparently prefers a 4-3-3 but only one of Drog or Torres can play in that and who will play the WF options? Malouda, Sturridge and Kalou are options...

And for City I guess we need to wait and see if Tevez goes and if he is replaced...

they certainly do, but the big question is where your mid-price and bargain basement assets are going to come from.

for my sins, i'm thinking fulham, villa, wigan and possibly qpr.

that said, pre-season and fpl towers' pricing will make things a lot clearer. just hoping for lots of transfer movement AFTER prices come out!

Agreed. He always is when fit. Arsenal often start strongly and RVP always seems well priced. My front three are currently Bent, RVP and Zamora.

Most of my team will be based on the runs but there are a few players that just have to be picked when fit because they are such good point scorers. Unless of course he is priced at 13m...

The price now seems to have settled at around 1.78 (http://sports.betfair.com/Index.do?mi=103155398&ex=1&origin=MRL) so wondering whether to lay some of the bet off or let it ride. What ya reckon? I can't see either winning in straight sets so that bet looks good. Even if it's in 4 sets the only way you can lose it it going to 6-4 everytime. I see 5 sets or some tie breaks

Good luck, I'll be watching at work 🙂 Hopefully the Tsonga match goes the distance with a big 20-18 final set so they're knackered for the final with Murray AND I may be home in time to catch Murray.

Either way, I work in Currys so there's loads of TVs, just means I have to dodge customers 🙂

If Man Utd buy Nasri it must surely mean a 4-3-3 formation this season given Valencia, Nani, Nasri, Young, Giggs etc. Must be potential problem for Hernandez as FPL points.

I'd assume if it was 4-3-3 then Hernandez would be going through the middle alone so should still pick up points. I'd prefer Rooney doing that role with Young and Valencia either side but can't see Fergie dropping Hernandez 🙂

Plus we haven't got Nasri yet 🙂

I think what Ferguson is doing is setting them up to play 4-3-3, but then have the flexibility to go to 4-5-1 when playing away. It also means they have a better squad for fifa 😉

I think Hazard played wide left for Lille. I remember Gervinho playing wide right for the Ivory Coast in the World Cup. It's going to be some classic Wenger playing players out of position.

Normally plays on the left but sometimes swaps with hazard on the other wing so really he can play both wings. Main reason i see why wenger probably signed him is because he can score goals, got pace/speed,can dribble, got stamina(think drog) and gets involved with other team players i.e more goals for RVP(when fit) and good assist points for him. The only issue i can see is him dropping back, he's not so good @ that but im hoping he will learn to do that fast and all depends which LB wenger buys as it will determine how much Gervinho will have to drop back.

Hopefully it's Jose Enrique. I don't think Gibbs is ready yet and hes fairly injury prone anyway. If Cesc and Nasri leave i would love it if Wenger just splashed out and got a star like Ganso or Pastore.

it's strange how - apart from Enrique whose agent is clearly trying to construct a move to a bigger side - Arsenal haven't been linked with any left-backs,

All it's been is centre-halves and attacking mids. I reckon Wenger is going to promote from within, so either Gibbs or Vermaelen at left-back.

I don't see Tsonga getting it in three and if it goes more than three, there's a very good chance it's 41+ games. Djokovic could turn it on for a three set match. It was just a thought if the odds were good enough.

My tactic this year for fpl team is to pick players who were injured for most/all of the first half of last season. My logic is that they will be raring to go and a cheaper price. Hunt will definitely be in my team and Gerard. Higginbotham is also on my Radar.
