Liverpoolโ€™s summer rebuilding programme look sets to kick in once again with the club tonight confirming that a bid for Villaโ€™s Stewart Downing has been agreed.

The official word from the Anfield club is that Liverpool now have permission to discuss terms with the England winger with a medical presumably to follow prior to the weekend. Reports state that the fee involved is ยฃ20 million; it’s suggested that Villa are set to immediately reinvest funds by acquiring Charles Nโ€™Zogbia from Wigan – we can only await developments there.

Tonightโ€™s news follows weeks of speculation surrounding Downingโ€™s future at Villa Park with Arsenal also thought to be entering the race for his services; Downing was discussed as a possible replacement for Samir Nasri who, according to Arsene Wenger, now looks set to sit tight at the Emirates for the final year of his contract.

Downing now looks destined to join the likes of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam amongst the Liverpool ranks, a move that will be greeted with a degree of disappointment by Fantasy managers.

With Ashley Young already plucked from Alex McLeishโ€™s squad, Downing looked well placed to offer mid-price potential during Villaโ€™s favourable opening to the season. Liverpool, in contrast, have a far trickier start to the campaign and their tough away fixtures may well see Downingโ€™s anticipated popularity take a dent as a result.

One possible advantage of the move โ€“ given the timing, is that Downing may well still be classified as a Villa player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and his price may well be kept lower as a result. There is however, growing concern when assessing the potential of Liverpoolโ€™s squad with the midfield now boasting an array of talent that looks certain to involve regular rotation of assets throughout the season.

We will put Downingโ€™s prospects at Anfield, including the impact of his arrival on Kenny Dalglishโ€™s burgeoning squad, under the microscope in a Scout Report to follow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If N'Zogbia goes to Villa he's not very clever in my opinion. He can't stop talking about how much Wigan is only a springboard and he wants to go to a big club.

Villa might very well be a sinking ship and they're definitely not a big club at the moment to me, at last not in the sense that N'Zogbia means.

Good Write up Mark, this move was expected but i was hoping it wouldn't follow through, yet more rotation in the Liverpool midfield, going to stay well away like many others i'd imagine.

As for the good side of things, Albrighton is a better shout now, especially with no Young and Downing he is a sure starter. Also he could be on some set pieces now or will Petrov take all of them?

Agreed, Albrighton is nailed on now but there will be concerns about Villa's goal getting potential without Young and Downing creating - plus there's always concerns about McLeish and his negative approach. Is Bent still a top target given the upheaval at Villa? It's becoming debatable.

True! if Villa only score one goal a game on average(which is what Brum just managed last year) you know about 2 thirds will be from Bent, just like when he was playing at Sunderland before Gyan came along, he will notch 6-8 pens anyway!

the most interesting one for me is what wigan do if/when n'zogbia goes. moses can fill the cleverley hole but n'zog??? given their favourable early run a punt could emerge from this

How will Suarez play now? On the right wing? Buying Downing seems to be Carroll related. They want a classical winger that can do crosses.

That would mean Kuyt out though.. I'm totally avoiding LFC players for a while.

Albrighton is the only wide player at Villa now? They might have to use Agbonlahor as a winger now so surely they'll be after N'zogbia. Prefer if he stays at Wigan.

King Kenny is a nutter. The amount of money he is spending on these players is ridiculous, perhaps John W Henry doesn't really understand football and is using the Torres signing as a marker for these new ones because 20m for Downing, 10m for Adam and 15m for Henderson is madness. Next they will be snatching Scotty Parker (from our grasp!) for about 25m.

Lads, sorry to be 'spamming' my newly found website out a bit tonight, but, I need some of you folk to 'beta' it. Or test it and see what you think.

On the site there is a 'Teams' Tab, with each premier league team. Coming off from these tabs (Eventually (Only Arsenal at the mo)) There is a tab that says Vs TEAM X If you click on that tab it then shows you the past results from the games between the two clubs, as well as scorers, and things that may affect FPL (Assists, Did Fabregas play, sendings offs). Would you be so kind as to have a little play around and bare in mind I started that about an hour ago. Thanks.

    http://footyinengland.weebly.com/index.html

This is just an idea, and I am wondering if I get it ALL sorted, would it be a useful tool? I would obviously update it throughout the seasons, and add previous seasons as I go along. So by next season there will be (Theoretically) about 4 seasons worth of results/goalscorers there.

That would be useful Greg, if you can find motivation to do all that then fair play to you. Maybe a team sheet would be helpful as well or if a team kept a clean sheet you could name the 5 defensive players.

It all works fine for me so far, so no worries there.

I thought of a team sheet type thing, but is too much. Perhaps the defensive players as well. I did think about that. If I am honest, the motivation is there for me to do it at the moment as it is a tool that I personally want. But, I am not wasting time doing it if it is just for myself, basically, if people on here would like it, and use it, then I will do it. Its a long summer, should be able to get it done quite easily before the start of the new season.

I think he was talking about league games- though we'll have it in the bag by March so it hardly matters ๐Ÿ˜‰

I wait for 40 minutes for a chance, then they all come at once.

Pretty poor half, although it's a pre-season game so I wasn't really expecting a classic. Early to say but I like what Young could bring to United. Fabio has been excellent going forward.

    Anyways I'm wrecked, night all.

still could easily be about 4-0. can't believe rooney didn't put that bicycle top corner, keeps wasting those in those little manchester derbys.

    I'm surprised it's 0-0 at HT...

    New England are terrible 3 W - 8 L - 7 T and bottom of the table

    so....the liverpool midfield/attack. any guesses?

    i can't really see how a 4-4-2 would work, so it's one of 4-1-4-1, 4-3-2-1 or 4-3-3.

    if 4-1-4-1:

    ____________lucas____________
    kuyt_gerrard_adam/henderson_suarez
    ___________carroll____________

    or

    ____________lucas____________
    downing_gerrard_adam/henderson_suarez
    ___________carroll____________

    if 4-3-3:

    henderson__gerrard__adam/lucas
    downing__carroll__suarez

    if 4-2-3-1:

    adam___lucas
    henderson_gerrard_lucas/downing/suarez
    carroll

man, it's a mess. doesn't seem to be room for regular starts for kuyt AND henderson AND downing. perhaps henderson will be a supersub for the first couple of seasons?

i haven't even tried to figure out how aquilani, maxi, cole, aurelio and meireles fit in.
