Liverpool’s summer rebuilding programme look sets to kick in once again with the club tonight confirming that a bid for Villa’s Stewart Downing has been agreed.

The official word from the Anfield club is that Liverpool now have permission to discuss terms with the England winger with a medical presumably to follow prior to the weekend. Reports state that the fee involved is £20 million; it’s suggested that Villa are set to immediately reinvest funds by acquiring Charles N’Zogbia from Wigan – we can only await developments there.

Tonight’s news follows weeks of speculation surrounding Downing’s future at Villa Park with Arsenal also thought to be entering the race for his services; Downing was discussed as a possible replacement for Samir Nasri who, according to Arsene Wenger, now looks set to sit tight at the Emirates for the final year of his contract.

Downing now looks destined to join the likes of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam amongst the Liverpool ranks, a move that will be greeted with a degree of disappointment by Fantasy managers.

With Ashley Young already plucked from Alex McLeish’s squad, Downing looked well placed to offer mid-price potential during Villa’s favourable opening to the season. Liverpool, in contrast, have a far trickier start to the campaign and their tough away fixtures may well see Downing’s anticipated popularity take a dent as a result.

One possible advantage of the move – given the timing, is that Downing may well still be classified as a Villa player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and his price may well be kept lower as a result. There is however, growing concern when assessing the potential of Liverpool’s squad with the midfield now boasting an array of talent that looks certain to involve regular rotation of assets throughout the season.

We will put Downing’s prospects at Anfield, including the impact of his arrival on Kenny Dalglish’s burgeoning squad, under the microscope in a Scout Report to follow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If i remember right the £12,50 was early registration price and it will go back to £20. Look we can all get worked up on speculations and perceptions, but for the small amount of money its worth the try. Its what community is all about. I have invited all my mates from my minileague here over the last 3 years and not one is a member and maybe 2 use the free next ticker. Humans are lazy. Good managers put in the work.

So Camzy? Any tips for the goalkeeper rotation for the first few weeks? Your Foster/Begovic rotation did me (and you) proud for the end of last season's matches.

    The FFS projected points 2010/11 dream-team (3-4-3)

i had looked at the ffs projections, as well, chris. looking at the lists in the members' area, it looked as if those projections were current as of GW21 or 22. where did you find projections for the official fpl game?

Sorry for the confusion - the first team would have been the projected dream-team based on the FFS projections, the second team is the ACTUAL dream team at the end of the season, and compares the projected points for that team to their actual scores.

i thought all the opening GW's fixtures were happening on the 13th. has that now changed? looking at the fixtures article on fpl's news page, it says that stoke/chelsea, west brom/manu will happen on sunday the 14th and city/swansea will be on monday the 15th.

    is that confirmed?

Absolutely impressed by it all if I may say so. Life is about growth. If we have no vision we stagnate and eventually wither away.

Thankfully, the leadership has vision and recognises the need to grow. I am grateful to them for all that they do for us.

With that in mind, we will grow too as ff players.

          Keep the faith 🙂

    Interesting fact:

There were 37 members of P Mowbray's "Top 1000 ANY Season" FPL league last season. Exactly 0 of the teams, which included some FFScout contributors', achieved a top 1000 finish in 2010/2011.

The winning team (Power's Rangers / Gareth Rees) finished 1478 in the world.

Yeah, I had a 798 finish in the 2008/9 Season but last year's tinkering with Metro/Telegraph games distracted me too much and I came in at 382k! That said I was around the million mark at gameweek 7 and progressively improved from then on. Focus is very important in this game! 🙂

Wonder what all the Downing talk will do to the price of Albrighton and nzogbia if he moves to villa.

Hopefully fpl opens up prior to the actual transfers.

I was set on Albrighton and Nzogbia if still at Wigan. Not to sure if Charlie moves to Villa though.

Yeah, Villa don't even have a keeper yet and need to get a move on. If they don't get Nzogbia who will run the show in midfield?

Even with their good start in fixtures they might be a dissapointment.

It's crazy how lowly N'Zogbia appears to be rated in the pl. Look at the mass love Adam got and N'Zog is, relatively speaking, ignored.

The trouble with not being British in the current transfer window is indeed grave.

Championship sides are always my Achilles heel in this game - I pay literally zero attention to them until they get into the Premier League and have to frantically do some research for those cheap star buys. I fear I won't have much time if the game doesn't start up soon though - holidays are coming and I doubt I'll have access to the game. May miss it altogether if it doesn't hurry up and go live!

🙂 Going away for two weeks from the 30th July - hence if game gets much later, two more weeks to be precise, then I'm gonna miss it! I'm going to southern Portugal and have no idea what internet access they have there - the villa we're going to certainly doesn't have any 🙁

Can do some Championship research now but won't know who's likely to be a bargain until the prices are up - definitely seem to remember last year having some quite inflated prices on the newly promoted sides, could just be bad memory though 🙂

I'm off for a couple of weeks as of 25th July and aren't concerned. A couple of years ago or so we were away for the start of the season and I managed my team from an internet cafe in Corsica. I think Downing could be a really good buy for Liverpool. I am sure i am falling for the hype, but they could start to have a good balance and depth to their squad. Downing could help get the best out of Carroll and therefore give Suarez another route to goal.

Do we think Modric will go? Chelsea will have to pay close to Fabs fee wont they?

In my eyes Downing is a good signing just not spectacular and for a reported 20 million you'd expect more.

Moderic has 4 years left on his contract and is in great form. Spurs honestly shouldn't sell for under 35 million. That's if we do like-for-like comparisons in this transfer window atleast.

i havent moaned about the success and level playing field, im just annoyed personally that i wont be able to post under my old username and with a link to my team (it wont take a genius to work it out if u posted here before but my mates wont know its me if they join)

the reason for this is because i play for a lot of money (likely to be 1k this year) and the reason i have won a few quid the last 2 years is because of the planning i do - something that i like to discuss on here, the likelihood is a few will join here now and i wont be able to do that

im not moaning at mark and co as i have said if in their situation id do exactly the same its just one of those things where there are positives and negatives on a personal level

Morning TT - at first I was a bit "dissapointed" at the news, but I predicted a day or two ago that FFS might be involved with the "launch" based on Mark's cryptic posts.

Never thought thought "our cover" would be blown though! hehe

But at the end of the day it's no reason to get paranoid(Daniel/needleVor).

I always maintained and still do that luck plays a very big role in fpl and even if you know what an opponent does it's means very little. I was only one in my minileague using FFS and still came second by 4pts! Not a good example though, as I should have won it if i picked Dempsey(c) gw 24.

But I went on that week on FFS about Demspey, and what did I do? I picked Zamora(!) because that's what an overload of info can do to one under pressure.

Some fpl players that never had access to FFS before might be overwhelmed with all the "goodies" on here and it could actually have negative effect.

I agree, it's rare that going with all the bandwagon choices you see on here will get you anywhere - more often than not something as simple as captain choice can be a huge difference. I always find the worst thing is when you're not topping your league but the guy who is invariably has all the big names/scorers so you try to put someone "different" in who can make the difference, you captain them and they usually get sent off in 5 minutes... Luck is a huge factor, to some degree you make your own but it's usually better to go with a gut feeling tied to some educated knowledge than simply try to follow what everyone else suggests.

Have to agree with you guys on the luck front. I have mentioned this before and been really shot down in flames. However the morning always seems a calmer and more sensible time to come on here in my experience (well morning in the UK). To deny luck is to be silly.

I didnt pick Dempsey either Christlna,b ut could have, really considered it! Whoever picks the right bargain couple of unknowns at the start of this season will have a great head start.

I too found the FPL link a bit odd at first but yes, this place is what you make of it,and you can filter your questions/responses according to what you know about people and clubs.

Cant wait for it to start and wish Toon would sign a few more players!

              Hi Jimrod,

"as simple as captain choice can be a huge difference"

How long are you playing FF? Captain choice is everything in this game. It makes your team good or bad in one GW. IT is the best differential also. And regarding Dempsey if u were here around you would see that me and some other chaps were promoting Dempsey as a captain cause he loves double GW's. He always scores a brace and Zamora? Come on he was back from injury and the logic is not to captain recent injured player in a double where he plays 2 games in 3-4 days difference.

Been playing since the old CYKI days! Yeah, captain choice is the difference between topping your league and finishing 300 points off the pace - I had an awful year for it last season after a bad start (due to playing too many different games!), trying to catch-up with different captains rather than the sensible choices really screwed me over 🙁

Right, this is stupid I know, but anyway! A driver is just the most powerful club from the wood family right? Only difference being woods play off fairways too and drivers only off the tee?

I had been given a set of irons and a bag and have been down the driving range but know I need at least one wood/driver and a putter, just working out what I can get away with. Thinking a second hand driver and putter, i dont need a 3/5/7 wood do I?!

I enjoy playing the bit I have (one proper round). Im crap but enjoy it. Want to get what I need to practice and no more. Cheers

Normally a 1(driver) 3 and 5 wood plus your irons and putter, but everyone is different. Slot of people using rescue irons these days instead of the 3 and 5 woods, but maybe try borrowing off somebody til you know what works for you before buying.

I use a driver and the 3/4/5 are hybrids because they are so much easier to hit than irons. Realistically though, as a beginner you can get away with just a driver, then 5 iron upwards. You probably won't be able to hit a 3/5 Wood or a 3/4 Iron so don't bother trying yet..... if you get into it, you can always add a set of hybrids to your bag later

Mate of mine was aksing the same thing the other day. For starting out I would suggest you can get away with not having a full set (certainly irons). This would be worth considering:

                Driver, 5W, Hybrid/Rescue club, 5I, 71, 8I, 91, SW, PW, Putter

You could learn the game and get round courses with those.

I got the irons for free, and PW. Whats a rescue iron?
5W for use off the fairway when you dont think you'll make the green (cough!) with irons right?

Rescue iron aka rescue club, hybrid. It's basically a 3 iron that's easier to hit. I think the pro golfer Yang doesn't carry less that a 6I - he uses hybrid clubs. They're easier for beginners to hit. You can use a 5W off the fairway or off the tee, but practice with it first!

Yea, its painful but wasn't expecting anything else! Our transfer kitty consists of a couple of tickets to blood brothers, and Moyes is such a stubborn bugger he won't sell anyone. We don't need too much - a back up for Baines, a striker and a right winger. Selling Rodwell, Yobo and Yak would do the business but I worry we've left it too late (again) 🙁

You certainly don't need a full selection of woods - to start you may not even need the driver! Find a nice 3-wood and it'll work in place of the driver and off of fairways on the longer holes, I know some decent players who do this as the driver can be so hard to hit well. The woods are generally harder to hit than some of the irons but you'll learn as you play! It may be worth finding a good hybrid club too (this replaces your longer hitting 3/4 type irons) - probably the easiest clubs to hit long.

With the putter go into a golf shop, the larger kind if poss and they usually have a large selection with a putting mat, play about with the different types and find one you like (there's no obligation to buy one there!) - the type is more crucial than the cost/brand, there are large mallet styles or old fashioned blade/heel-toe types, see which you're more comfortable with. After that just keep practising - it's a hard game!

I was reading and listening to a fanzine discussion of this yesterday, there are many schools of thought, currently Id go for....

      Krul

Simspon, Williamson, Coll, Enrique (if he says)

      Tiote Cabaye

      Barton Arfa Marveaux / Gut

      Ba

Hope the formatting of that worked, I imagine Barton playing right still with who we have bought, but we have a fair bit of competition in midfield with Gosling coming back too. It will not be a one man show though, assuming Marveux and Cabaye are any good! Im excited about Ben Arfa if he can stay fit too. Im not sure about Barton's BPs if thats what you're thinking, have to see who else we buy/how friendlys work-first is tomorrow night

      Still need more players though

      Hope that helps!

Thanks mate it helps a lot. I always like when your team scores at home it is very cheerful seeing the fans going wild while celebrating, I really see a real support group there.

And regarding the lineup: I am not sure that Krul is gonna be nailed on starter, Taylor is nailed at the back IMO, Tiote could go to Chelsea (like), Ben Arfa could be in attacking mid position and fantasy bargain and I am really not sure that Ba is gonna hold whole season. Maybe Ameobi or that lad Best if he is still around. I am not the expert and u r the fan, but that are my thinking and that team will be in the bottom half surely.

We will likely be lower mid table if we stay up each season, until Ashley goes, agreed. Although I think that squad could do better if it gels and stays fit.

Steven Taylor I assume you mean. I wouldn't pick him ahead of Williamson myself, he makes silly mistakes and is unreliable, Coll can do the fancy footwork, Williamson winning the ball. Agree on Ben Arfa.

Why dont yuo think Ba will hang around out of interest?

best thing to do with golf toon tom ,take half a dozen balls up the park and just practise with a 6 or 7 iron ,forget about woods till ur more adept with the shorter irons ,and gradually build up ,golf course itself is not the place too practise cos ud be crap and its expensive, remember golf is the game the more u practise the better u get ,and if you get bitten by the golf bug youll have a friend for life,gl m8.

Agree with with Jordan here, But I would suggest looking for a Par 3 course, They are great for getting you used to using your Irons and the pitcher and the putter. What do you read into the macheda rumour yesterday? Apparently he tweeted that he is looking forward to playin with Sneijder then it got mysteriously deleted! It coincides quite well with the leak that gill has agreed terms.

On another note, I really do despair about everton at the moment. The club is in a stagnation period, there are some real fan movements this summer showing contempt towards our board for failure to envigourate the club over the last ten years. Basically our revenue from TV rights has grown 400% whereas the commerical side, (for which the board are responsible) has grown something like 30% if I remember correctly. And thats even dropped in the past couple of seasons. Article is good reading, here:

    http://www.toffeeweb.com/season/11-12/comment/editorial/18130.html

Summers are bad times for the everton fan.

This whole thing is based on rumours, no facts. The fact that came out yesterday was that Inter hadn't received any offers and Sneijder was not for sale.

Even in the unlikely event that a fee is agreed, I can't see it happening - I have mentioned reasons many times already so I wont repeat myself.

£80m spent on 4 players to add to an already pretty strong squad should be in with a good chance of the title, not having aspirations of a top 4 finish

Yeah well the market has gone loopy since the Arabs acquired Citeh. They spent 600m on players to get 3rd spot and been left with a load of chaff to offload.

It still feels like a massive amount of money on so-so players. In a 'normal' transfer window you wouldn't have seem Henderson go over the £10 million mark, yet somehow he's worth 20!? Seems like there's a serious amount of overpricing at the mo.

Well since they got at least 20m over the odds for Torres, it's like a beacon to other clubs to raise their prices when Liverpool come calling.
I've heard that City paid 13m-15m for Clichy, not the 7m quoted in the papers. It's a clever way for Arsenal to lower the prices they're asked for when they go looking for players.

Did lescott give 100% for man city? Did Upson or Green give 100% for west ham? Did Konchesy give 100% for liverpool???
The idea that English players try more then foreigners is the usual red top xenophobic guff.

We can speculate based on Mark's comment that they'd please the community on here.

      So I'm guessing:

      - AutoCaptain Out, Vice Captain In
      - Own Goal Penalty Out

      What I'm hoping:

      - That they'll allow a 2-5-3 formation
      - Complete transparency surrounding BPS and Player Values

2-5-3 would make the game quite a lot more fun, but if that were to happen I reckon you should get 1 more point for an assist/goal from a defender...

Then why not allow us bigger squads (they don't have 15 man match day squads in the Premier) and more free reign over formations? How about no goalie and 0-6-5? That would maximize points.

I would say a change to the auto-captain is a dead cert, either scrapping it or as you say picking a specific vice-captain.

Can't see the 2-5-3 unfortunately, would be nice though!

BP transparency I actually think will annoy everybody far more than we think it will.

I have to disagree on the 2-5-3 allowance. That isn't a real formation is it? It is a gung ho 88th minute of a cup tie and 2-1 down formation! People would just get three 4mill defenders and go big up top.

That emergency captain rule is the number one thing I want gone and I'm praying the powers that be see sense.

Fair enough! I had Drogba and Malouda for the first few gameweeks and the points were pouring out of them for the first 5 gameweeks... then Chelsea fired the assistant coach...

It would have to be the usual suspects for now hey...unless we buy someone really threatening I'd say Lampard, Torres, Malouda...in that order...With Ivan, Cole and Luiz as defenders with attack potential.

I think to start the season it would have to be Torres...but I can also see rotation similarly to how Utd used their forwards last season. Luiz is a genuine option but if we use him as DM then it may be an issue. He would then also be an OOP so that would nullify that. If he's chosen at CB then with reports of Cahill coming I'd be very worried with Ivan also lurking and pushing for his preferred position of CB. Who knows at this point...pity we don't have a Community Shield game...would be a nice indicator of our first team...

Although we have plenty of pre-season left to analyse a little more, the United and Liverpool midfields are looking extremely dodgy fantasy wise..

Also, who else is going to have Baines in their side regardless of price? He had a storming season last year and he killed me week after week! He is sure to come in at 7mill at least - probably 7.5 - possibly even 8’s seeing as he is on penalty duty.

Everton usually start poorly right? But he has jumped in status and seems to deliver regardless of results. I think early injuries will help solve most of those issue. I see Valencia is hurt so that may make the wingers more appealing...and Rooney would obviously be a regular...

The midfield situation is already an interesting one and the prices aren’t even out yet. I mean, I could have an entirely cheapish midfield - Is that so crazy?

The pricey big guns seem quite risky to me – Gerrard has unproven fitness. Cesc may not even be there and he has developed into what seems to be a constant injury worry. Nasri may be at another club. Silva gets rotated and subbed early. Young/Valencia/Nani can’t all play surely. The majority of games I watched Lamps didn’t impress me at all last year - The Blackpool away game doesn’t count because that defence had as much backbone as a jellyfish. Then again he is on pens and generally always starts – But I have a feeling that if he, err, isn’t ‘pulling his weight’ then VB won’t be afraid to drop the big name.

It's a good point, there's likely to be a lot of value in players like Sinclair, Ben Arfa and O'Hara but Lampard is going to be too hard to ignore with those first few fixtures for me.

O’Hara is nailed on for me, praying he is cheap still. No more than 5.5 please! But Lamps does look hard to ignore with that start.

I've got O'Hara to start at 5.5m - there's no way a Wolves midfielder can cost more - 6.0m at the very most. I think you may be right though - more value to be had in midfield than up front... not many cheap striking options springing to mind.

I think I may go for Dempsey again. The guy consistently gets points every season and is always one of the leaders in goals and shots on goal. He takes pens and plays almost every match. He should be pricesd around 7.5m too.

I'm probably going for a cheap midfield - Fabregas spent most of the time on my bench injured, Lampard didn't do anything, Gerrard was injured and all three required a lot of sacrifice elsewhere in my team.

What do you have in mind for 'cheap' MFs? Silva, VDV, Nani, AY, Valencia, Nasri, Malouda, Kuyt...they'll all be around $9-10m! After that, the quality dips quite a bit.

I’m only going on memory M’n’L, to save my sanity I haven’t done any precise research over the summer as that is to come in the next few weeks! But I swear he got the hook a vast majority of the time even though the last few he may have played 90. Such an elegant player though, great to watch and will be a definite captain shout for the first week – How many of us will be glued to Citeh Vs Swansea on the first MNF of the season!!

I have to admit that Albrighton has come on to my radar this morning after a bit of a mention on these pages – Then again I am put off by the fact that Villa look very dodgy already and McLeish has borrrrrrrrring written all over him.

Don't get me wrong, I like Villa. But Bent needs service to score goals and Young and Downing were huge for Villa the last two seasons. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were fighting for their lives come May.

Yeah I think a lot of people are looking at a cheaper MF this seaosn and putting more emphasis on ttheir forwards and defence. But I still think you need 1 or 2 top MFs in your side in case your forwards aren't scoring. VDV and MAlouda will get lots of consideration I'm sure.

Bah, wrote loads of replies earlier but internet had gone down and they didn't make it through! 😀

Toontom - I'd recommend for minimum club requirements you could do far worse than getting a 3-Wood and a 20 degree or so Hybrid/Rescue. Many people are scared of the driver and it can be a hard club to hit - the 3-Wood is easier, goes nearly as far and can be hit from the fairway on longer holes. The hybrid would replace a 5/7wood and your longer 3iron which is also hard to hit - can also be hit from the rough. As for putter, go to a golf shop and hit a few on their practice putting surface - basically there are two types, the thinner blade/heel-toe type and the larger "mallet" style. Figure which type you like best and get a cheap one off Ebay/golfbidder - it's the most important club in the bag but the basic type is more of a concern than particular brands etc.

Daniel: Yeah, I've played since the old CYKI days - I did understate the importance of the captain a little! I remember Having Riise as captain the week before he got a hat-trick and clean sheet (at least I think he did, it was something like that!) but I'd changed to Lampard or someone who got me about 4 points 🙁 My best finish was the 2008/9 season where I came 698th, need to focus on just FPL this year and get back to that!
