Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

Our pre-season form guide is up to date with all yesterday’s action, scorers and team lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Nope. The best part of fantasy footy is the team selection/transfers. This is the one time you can make unlimited transfers without cost/wildcard use.

Tinkering and switching tactics/personnel is fun. So, although you're right inasmuch as these teams surely aren't 'productive' teams, they still help fill the empty void in my lonely soul.

Please rate my breakfast. This is the last time I promise, I just can't stop tinkering! Always tinkering.

    Kingsmill Brown
    Olivio Light, marmite(VC), Unsmoked Danish

I’m so tempted to bring in a big gun like Heinz baked beans but need to consider the long term effects.

    Given, Al-Habsi (B)
VDV (c), Adam, Taarabt (vc), Yaya Toure, Albrighton
    Bent/Carroll?, Holt (B), Zamora (B)

go with Bent or Carroll as starting striker?

switching over to Arsenal or Chelsea strikers with a QPR, NOR or SEA cheap midfielder after rotations clear up a bit.

Gervinho is a big risk: Arsenal have tough opening fixtures, play every three days due to UEFA qualifying matches and although plays wide as a winger, he is a forward on FPL, which means you'll have to choose between him and RVP. Wait and see imo.

Barton was a criminal bully. Yes. He has since given up drink and had a stellar season - bar one epsiode with MGP - free from trouble and as an inspirational leader on 'Castle.

If he stays, he's likely to be in the middle of it all and therefore in the points and BPs.

Just something to bear in mind... transfer prices are the most volatile in the first 6 weeks of the season. A form player can increase 0.5-1mln inside of a month and non-performing players will drop 0.3-0.5 in that period also.

The top picks in mid/fwd this year are:
Zog - cant argue with that
    Wilshere - tough fixtures
Bale - tough fixtures + he is highly inconsistent FF scorer
Toure - dont expect as much as last year
VdV - tough fixtures, also a but patchy as a scorer
Tarabt - the sulk - -Bothroyd is a much better choice
    Tiote - Phil Neville-esque selection
Adam - even if he plays, no set peices he can rely on

Suarez - might not play in first game = 0.2 hit straight away
    Odem - crap fixtures
    Hernandez - not guaranteed starter
    Rooney - tough fixtures
    RVP - tough fixtures

would be happy to be "short" many of these players. go against the crowd

Definitely Cashley for early on in the season. Chelsea have good fixtures, Everton don't. Everton haven't started well since their CL qualifying season. Also, it's been suggested that Cole may benefit from AVB's style while Arteta may take some penalties or at least set pieces instead of Baines. 0.5m cheaper as well.

I think people are put off by vdv price, but as a spurs fan, this year vdv has had a proper pre-season, has scored three goals in three games so far, if spurs score vdv is normally involved - so he has to be at least on your watchlist!

How essential is Cashley bearing in mind AVB's repudiated preference for attacking wing backs and Chelsea's run of fixtures?

There seems no other Chelsea option though Luiz would seem the natural option at RWB unless new transfers transpire - Anyone remember Bosingwa??? Surely AVB won't nail him on the team sheet?

AVB has yet to decide in the chelsea back line, cashley and terry seem the only likely starters. It is possible that bosingwa could be employed regularly at rb but only time will tell. With regards to the remaining cb position, it could be held by either Luiz or Ivanovic. It seems likely Alex will move on, and AVB may seek a replacement possibly rolando or subotic.

Keepers are so rubbish though and Given is such a bad band wagon.

Villa were rubbish last year and have lost their best players. Do not understand the love at all.

Villas new manager is boring, he will tighten them up and be defensive.

I'm starting to look at Cech as a solid season long option and just forget rotation. Hart or Cech for keeper, boring boring me.

There was a good post a few days ago from someone regarding how the BP's may play out and solid keepers with CS's stand to benefit.

i disagree with that post because the keepers will get consistently ok scores (top 4-5 on the pitch) but rarely mega scores (top 3 on the pitch = bonus pts)

RVP and Suarez for the long haul, but having Bent for the first few GWs wouldn't be a bad idea.

Suarez problem - does anyone have any views from Dalglish about the likelihood of him starting?

My mate is a liverpool fan, he says the reason why Kenny went out and bought half the prem a month ago was so that they all train and get a pre-season together so they could gel.

Does it make sense to slot Suarez straight in and risk burn out?

He has all the players at his disposal to play 4-3-3 to start
    -- Lucas -- Adam --
    ------Gerrard------
    Kuyt -- Caroll -- Downing

    then revert to
    Kuyt -- Lucas -- Gerrard -- Downing
    ------Suarez -- Caroll -----

    after that
Henderson wont play much unless Gerrard/Lucas get injured. unlikely Adam plays that much away from home...

either way its too much of a risk to start with Suarez unless there is some clarification from Liverpool on whether he will play or be rested.

Suarez just reminds me of RVP/Fab last year. took about 5 games before they started playing regular

Probably more chance of Suarez making the start of the season than Gerrard from what people are saying.

ok so... perhaps 4-4-2 after all

        Kuyt - Lucas - Adam - Downing
        Suarez - Caroll

Liverpool have consistently been playing 4-2-3-1 in pre-season. I personally think Suarez might make it, he hadn't played much football before joining Liverpool and couldn't play in Europe when he did. He has also said previously that he thinks he'll be ready.

^THis. People forget he had a 9-10 week break last December/January. After that enforced lay-off, he's only played five months. I think he'll be ready. With no European football, and Kenny likely to give youth a chance in the cups, there'll be plenty of recouperation time between matches.
