Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

Our pre-season form guide is up to date with all yesterday’s action, scorers and team lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well, a team based on RMTs, to be sure.

Essentially, many will tell you it's a decent team, because 90% of the RMTs on here are 100% the same. So = yawn.

      > luiz and rafael look good, but could be rotated - so pay attention to them.

      > Your midfield is as uninspired and insipid as everyone else's on here. Hate it. VDV is your best middie and his fixtures don't pick up for a bit.

      > Frontline = what everyone else has/suggests.

No offense, but this team is largely why I hate RMTs. Vanilla reproduction.

The worst thing about these "generic" teams is that should they happen to do well in the first few weeks you'll find yourself at the bottom end of your league with a mountain to climb - not like you can get those players in and catch up! You have to hope having something different pays off but it's always a gamble...

(Hell I've got Maxi Rodriguez as my captain - hoping he gets one of his hat-tricks in the first week ;))

Same as, back in the 2009/10 season I finished 798th, went my own way and stayed with it all season. Last year had crappy start for same reasons as you and finished 300k or so. I think I'll have a mixture of top faves and gambles this season...

(Will also not be playing the other games - very distracting!)

To a degree the reason this 'generic vanilla team' occurs is because people discuss the best option for their team and (logically) there is a team which comes out on top. The fact people end up following this team is perfectly intelligent, if slightly boring: it doesn't make it a weak team.

It's the 'logically' that's at question here: unlike a mid-season RMT, the thinking behind the choices is *all* conjectural.

"The new Adam", Taarabt, Holt, Ruddy, Sinclair, Tchoyi, etc., etc. have no significant basis for their placement - but for intuition. This intuition is being mass-produced by the masses who have no/too lazy to formulate their own intuition as to choices.

Following the blind is not perfectly intelligent. It's a cop out.

Whether it makes a weak team or not is irrelevant - if it's strong, it's FFS-strong, not a personal victory. Bah.

The reason that 'the masses' put in players like Sinclair/Taarabt/etc. is due to people on here putting forward reasonable arguments which convince those less well informed. Holt was a top scorer, Taarabt & Sinclair are central to their team & Tch gets played occasionally as a second striker. Obviously non of this will matter if they can't play well when the season starts but it increases their chances. This is all you do in FFS, increase you chance of getting goals/assists/and all the rest.

I also disagree with the notion of a 'personal victory'. If someone selects a team who are successful it will be a victory of research & chance. The research you undertake will, at the most extreme degree, be looking into Opta-stats and even then it would only be 'a victory for those at Opta-stats. Not a personal one.

How much importance do people put into how kind the fixtures are? I'm considering starting with two players (a defensive and an attacking) from each of the five teams with the easiest opening 10 fixtures. So that would be Fulham (Zamora/Duff & Hangeland), Villa (Given & Albrighton), Wigan (Alcaraz & NZogbia), QPR (Orr & Taarabt), and Man City (Kompany & Silva/Yaya) - Then use a Wild Card about week 10 to the teams with better games week 11 to 20. Then use the winter wild card for the same again...

It actually frees up quite a bit of money for the other five players, if the strategy's sound, which it may not be.

i think you need some chelsea in there at the start if you're using that tactic.

could work i suppose..problem is there will always be core players like RVP etc who perform very well regardless of fixtures

Yeah, I've worked in Rooney, Cashley C and VDV - though I may change the balance of them - there's also the problem of price hikes waiting rigidly til week 11, so I'd be flexible.

fixtures kindness is also dependant on team form, the entire hype concerning boselli last season was based on him playing blackpool on gw1. blackpool turned out to become, fixture wise, a very tricky game to eb projected even for the big teams.

So last nights friendly in D.C. gave an old Everton supporter a warm fuzzy feeling about the upcoming season despite the lack of additions to the squad. Everton's game was brilliant at times and especially the younger players like Gueye, Barkley and Vellios really stepped up.

From an FPL point of view there wasn't much to take from the game though. Baines was brilliant and his work rate was impressive with the heat and humidity being almost unbearable even at the stands. Cahill seemed to play a bit further up the field than usual, almost acted a third striker at times. I can see Moyes playing him in an even more attacking role this season bearing the lack of consistent strikers in mind. Cahill did a good job filling in for the injured strikers last season.

I was really looking forward to seeing Arteta in action but his injury will apparently see him miss out on the start of the season. Coleman played at right back and that's where we're likely to see him during most of the season barring injuries. Nothing new but none the less confirming what Moyes said at the end of last season.

Don't like your defense either, look closer at rotations... you will notice that all 5 play away from home on GW3 all then all 5 play at home on GW4... you need to balance that out...

Cerny won't play, better off getting Ruddy - don't think there are any other 4.0 starter keepers at the moment. I'd also suggest downgrading a defender unless you plan on playing 4 every week.

Overall it's a very risky team but you don't want the same team as everyone else.

Tchoyi - One to see. Hodgson has been saying he may push him up front to be striker, but it depends on formation etc and he could likely just be Odemwingie's back-up.

Moses - the general expectation is that if (when) N'Zogbia leaves Moses will take his spot. I agree with it.

Is my team any different to all of you other people? Or am i falling into the usual trap of being a sheep and falling for what everyone else is picking..?
i think it looks alright personally...

    De Gea

    Kompany - Samba - riise

    VDV - N'zog - Wilshere - Downing

    Ba - Odem - Suarez

    SUBS: Given - Rafael - o'shea - tiote

Think you need a decent third defender.

Really? I did think about that, but figured it would make the other 2 defenders pretty obsolete. Also, Sunderland and Newcastle rotate pretty well, so I'm likely to be Cole, Kompany and one of Simpson/Bramble, except for GW1 where Orr would get the call.... 🙂

Good enough, I wasn't sure how the rotation worked out for your third def. If you have a plan, then nvm my criticism.

I might have to resort to plagiarism at this rate- the teaching course I'm doing is taking up all my time!! 🙁

I'm pretty confident that you could ignore this game until the day before the season opens, and still put a decent team together without needing full-team help.

I have used those 'suggested' teams myself - but when I needed help to decide between which of two players to start ... all else being equal, then use the picks' choice.

Teaching course as in teaching kids or adult education?

Well i'm not copying 100%. Im just not that very arsed to dig out all the info. At the end I will probably end up with 8/9 players and at 2/3 from myself.

    RMT

It doesn't have a name or any players yet, but the kit is a charming blue shirt, white shorts and red socks. Also the name will be funny and it will have a really good squad featuring all your favourite players.

I'm going to start at 9/10. Thoughts?

      Real French. Too French.

Even the French don't like looking that French.

      3/10. Sorry.

I have 6.5 left for a midfielder, who do you think?

    1 Albrighton
    2 Brunt
    3 Barton
    4 Jarvis
    5 Henderson

p.s i ordered them by who I'd currently most like. But don't know enough about them / their teams / fixtures / changes since last season to know the best choice.

Ireland if you want to save another 0.5 - he took a knock in their last friendly though, so watching that space.

WBA's first two games may have been hand picked by Satan himself.
Brunt would be a no for me.

Anyone got definite status on Gerrard? Was toying on taking a punt on him, if only cos no-one else seems to be, but now hear he might've suffered another set-back.
