Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

Our pre-season form guide is up to date with all yesterday’s action, scorers and team lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I was seriously considering him but was hoping he would be less than £6m. Think Ba or Ben Arfa may be better Newcastle options. Am taking a wait and see approach with Cabaye.

With all of Chelsea's options plus at least one expensive signing likely to come in midfield I'd be surprised if Benayoun played much more than a bench role for most of the season.

Right, posted this question a couple of hours ago then immediately got dragged down the park by my missus to 'enjoy some time together' so don't know if anyone answered, so apologies for repeating meself. Anyone know the state of Gerrard's groin injury? Heard there might've been a setback...
    Cheers for any info

    Given (Ruddy)

    Kompany, Lescott, Orr, (Simpson), (Bramble)

    Lampard, Taarabt, Barton, Albrighton, (Dyer)

    Tevez, RVP, Rodders

This gives me some good captaincy options first few weeks:

    GW1: Tevez (v SWA)

    GW2: Lamps (V WBA)

    GW3: Lamps (V NOR)

    GW4: RVP (V SWA)

    GW5: Tevez (V ful)

    GW6: Lamps (V SWA)

    Potential problems are:
Tevez leaving/being too mardy to play.

My defence is a bit reliant on Man City so may look to swap Kompany to a Chelsea defender.

    Thoughts?

I like the idea of doubling up on city defence, and I think your team looks pretty good, not sure about having taarabt and dyer in your midfield though, just because we dont know how they'll fair in the premiership yet, maybe someone abit more proven?

Yeah Dyer will be rubbish, think Taarabt should be a reasonably safe bet though. Ideally Tevez will leave so I can downgrade to someone else and spend the money on improving Dyer. If it looks like he is staying in the premiership until at least January though, I think he will be in many more RMTs.

looks like a good team. after all the MOST important thing is picking the correct captain. tevez will have you sweating until 3pm GW1 though.
im 50/50 on picking lamps at the mo....think he may be deployed in a defensive role....will pick ether him or malouda myself....but its going to be basically a toss of a coin.

Lamps is the only Chelsea attacker I trust at the mo. Once it becomes clearer who starts out of Drogs and Torres they may be an option, although they will probably keep getting subbed around 60 mins to make way for the other one.

Malouda being confirmed as a regular starter would be nice but Lamps will be on pens and free kicks (if Drogs isn't on).
Much is made of Malouda being top of last seasons EA PPI but if you scale Lamps up to a whole season of games his score is better.

I'm thinking RVP is not the sure thing he once was. Arsenal will be playing pretty much every three days from day 1 until the end of august. So even if they do well there will be a lot of rotation, more so than Man U. This will change, but I would avoid until GW4 and maybe even GW5 because Wenger likes to rest best players against easier sides like Swansea.

Click on the little (i) next to the players name on the transfer list.
Then a little pop of the player with a picture will come up. In top right corner of this pop up there is an "add to watchlist" button to click.

NeedleVor, the point of the matter is you keep on posting sarcastic and rude replies to everyone which have no constructive basis whatsoever.

Just because you don't like people asking questions or posing draft teams doesn't mean it's either wrong or right to do so, it's a person's prerogative. However to be a continuous bother to everyone else and provide comments which are of no foundation other than to be a nuisance aren't in anyone's interest.

If you keep it up we'll have to moderate everything you say before it goes through.

been thinking about the EA sports index and i think people are getting too excited about the likes of yaya toure and kompany being near the top of the rankings.

These players have a high TOTAL score for a season so this means their average score per game is good.

But what we're interested in is the highest score in one game... Surely this will usually go to the more erratic players (goalscorers and assisters)rather than the consistent, unexciting defenders.

What i mean is that kompany's consistent EA rating is unlikely to get him 2 or 3 bps (unless he got a clean sheet in a low scoring game)

    Hope that makes sense!

why... imo he has high ranking because he is consistently the 3rd or 4th best player on the pitch... This means consistently 1 or 0 bps.

In a mid-high scoring game he'll be nowhere near the bps

            In a 2-0 game with 2 players with 1goal + 1assist, i'm not sure kompany's ariel duels count for a lot.

compare that to someone like nani who would probably be 1st quite often, and also 10th quite often (when he is firing them off target)

he still gets more bonus points in fpl

i'm glad you 2 get my drift... so i think the players to look out for are the attacking players up the top of the ea rankings... e.g. malouda - if he starts regularly he looks to be in a league of his own.

    the perfect team iteration #127

Given/Kenny -perfect rotation, can switch Kenny-->begovic in a couple months when the rotation breaks down, and then keep for season

    Defence
Luiz - great fixtures, will be 1st choice, gets goals + bps
Kompany - great fixtures, city will keep most clean sheets, underpriced at 6
Hughes - decent fixtures at first. cheapish for fulham
STaylor - will get goals, rotates well with Hughes weeks 3-9
DaLaet - could be any 4mln defender, happens to rotate with fulham well and already have QPR GK. isnt going to play in my team anyway

    Mids
Silva - captain to start. malouda can come in after that
Albrighton - great fixtures, downing & young have left
Zog - great first 3 fixtures, easy switch to Wilshere after week 3
O'Hara - could turn out to be a keeper for the season, good opening 5 fixtures. sessegnon in radar
Sinclair - to rotate with Bothroyd

    Fwds
Carroll - Suarez wont play first few games, it will be carroll up top on his own. 2 home games + arsenal away who cannot defend against him. Switch to RVP after week 3, or Torres after wk 1 if feeling bullish on chelsea
Bent - need this guy in your team with those opening fixtures.
Bothroyd - to rotate with Sinclair

Have 3mln in the bank to retain ultimate flexibility after wk1 for chelsea players and arsenal players in wk4

biggest weakness is the fact that Albrighton/Zog/OHara have to play week in week out home or away, but that weakness is a strength because there are so many 6-6.5 mids that are quality there is a huge pool of players to pick from Wilshere/Tarabt/Sessegnon/Etherington/Barton/BenArfa - spoilt for choice

Good post, love all the reasoning. If Carling made RMTs...

Why are you so sure Luiz will be 1st choice?

Is S Taylor nailed on first choice?

        Am sure.

He was towards the end of last season. He is their best CB. Simpson/Collocini/Taylor/Enrique. Willaimson is backup.

Yes. But liv MUN straight after, i prefer the idea of
Caroll (SUN), Torres (WBA), Torres (NOR) or just
        Caroll (SUN, ars, BOL)
        over
        RVP (new, LIV, mun)

RVP scored 7 points against Liverpool at home last season. He did nothing at Old Trafford, only playing 27 minutes as he came back from injury. He is blooming pricey but I can't not have him.

I think your a quadruple d1ck head, you have had a couple of babychams and think your dishing out cutting witty put downs to everyone, the truth is quite the opposite, I have have seen more humor in the nutty bits of a turd that someone forgot to flush in a Little Chef toilet in Luton

Your though process no doubt goes as follows -

"Hah I told him, and him, and him, I'll keep typing my witty cutting replies until they all notice me, I'll carve myself out an identity on here, it's my time to shine, I'm coming out of the shadows, I'm finally somebody!"

Week 2 and 3 arent great for City defensively so im leaning towards Dunne and 0.5

at least city play tight in their tough games though.

In some ways they seem more likely to keep a clean sheet v united than swansea... if that makes sense. (i.e. 0-0 compared with 5-2 or something)

Kompany is great value (as are all City defenders).

Lescott could be THE defender of next season, plays in a defensive team and scores goals.

Think Lescott will outscore Kompany so he's the one to get if you choose but getting both is a good option imo.

    Given, Al habsi

    Clichy, Gibbs, Hughes, Bardsley, Enrique

    Malouda, Downing, Nzogbia, Tarrabt, Barton

    Rooney, Zamora, Bothroyd

Fair enough about defence. Reckon Bothroyd's time has come though. Barton guaranteed IMO. Can't see Downing out of first 11, why else would they take him if it wasn't to keep AC fuelled?

How about this one then (maybe my 15th draft!)

What do people think of Silva for the coming season? Currently have him as my one expensive midfielder and not entirely certain he'll be the best pick for the price range (can go 1m higher than 9.5m if I really want to)

      If Tevez isn't - YES

Silva did well when Tevez was injured last season, scoring 5.4ppg when Tevez was missing compared to 3.8ppg with Tevez there.

I'm tempted to pick Super Mario too but think its a bad idea. He is just as likely to be brilliant as he is to do nothing or get sent off. Then you have the high risk of him not starting and being brought on or starting and being brought off. In short, Mario is too much of a liability.

Liking the rest of the team IF Malouda and Walcott are first choice at their clubs.

Loving this team actually, screams points everywhere! Only question is RVP's fitness but you can easily change him for Bent and have money leftover! Think Torres will come good too this season so he's another option with a nice early fixture list.

3 (three) Man City defenders?!? And I thought I was Greedy...

At least one of them should be Lescott.

Cheap and cheerful midfield which could pay off but could be a pain if Lampard or VDV or Young gets a hattrick GW1 and becomes "must have".

Very strong attack, but why no Chelsea?

Not sure having three expensive strikers is a good idea. There is likely to be at least one cheap to mid price option that scores highly. Would replace one of them with someone like Ba/Holt/Zamora/Odemwingie and upgrade one of the midfielders to a top player.

What are people’s intention for their starting formations?

    I’m currently choosing between:

    4-3-3
    3-4-3

I’m particularly interested in how you all think the new BP system will affect your formation and also how this season’s pricing will affect your formation?

3-4-3 is my standard on the basis that midfielders and attackers tend to score higher. Having said that my midfield currently has four 6-6.5m players so may use 4-3-3 quite a bit depending on fixtures.

It's been pointed out that creative midfielders may suffer under the new BP system with Charlie Adam being the best example based on 2010/11 stats.
