Today’s Members article sees the top ten defenders in terms of value come under the spotlight. What’s noticeable with regard to our projected points per Fantasy pound is only one of our top ten defenders ranks higher than any of yesterday’s top ten goalkeepers- with “Save” points boosting the goalkeeper tallies, it highlights the importance of picking the correct goalkeeper pairing in order to get the most out of your budget…

I find it funny how in January Matthew Upson was a consideration into fixing arsenals CB crisis an d a number of teams were lining up ~£8million bids for him. Now 6 months later he is availible on a free and it looks like only wolves are interested.

I realise he is a short term prospect due to age but surely he would be an upgrade for most teams.

There's nothing particularly funny in that HH - the only thing that Upson has added to his CV since January is that he captained a team to relegation.

    Given Ruddy
    ColeA Kompany Bramble Simpson Orr
    Lampard Sessegnon Sinclair Moses Derry
    Rooney VanPersie Zamora

Given- everyone has him, cheap and behind a pretty solid defense
Ruddy- rotates well, won’t play much since Norwich will probably be the whipping boys

ColeA- great clean sheet and attacking potential, Chelsea nice start
Kompany- another ‘must have,’ a mainstay in the solid City backline
Bramble- Titus Shambles is an accident waiting to happen, but 4.5 is still a snip imo
Simpson/Orr- my cheap benchies, 4.0 but are starters for their sides

Lampard- to get in on Chelsea’s good opening fixtures, safest option, set pieces/spot kick duties
Sessegnon- appears as if Bruce is building the side around him, plays right behind the striker
Sinclair- prefer him to Taarabt as this season’s Charlie Adam
Moses- should thrive without N’Zog, great opening fixtures
Derry- bench warmer, but is a sure starter for QPR

Rooney- good preseason, Man U coverage
RVP- labeled a ‘must have’ by many, covers Arsenal
Zamora- Fulham have an attractive start to the season

Tinkering less and less everyday, so that’s good!
There’s my novel, anyone want to give their thoughts?
    Cheers

why not brown in place of bramble for sunderland? may be more of a goal threat and less of a card magnet. watson may be another cheap option for wigan. I think Lamps is only necessary if it is confirmed that malouda will not be a regular starter.

Best options at SUN are Barsdley and O Shea in defence. Well, according to the projections 😉

Bardsley the best option for scoring.

Disagree. That extra 0.5 makes a huge difference used elsewhere. Bramble and Brown are just as good for 4.5.

Bramble isn't a card magnet. 5 yellows all of last year isn't bad. He's just a defensive liability at times.

Solid. Derry is QPR's equivalent of Tiote though, so you may want a rethink.

Get a 4.5 mid and upgrade Sinclair to Taarabt or Ruddy to Kenny.

I like it though on the whole. Always been a fan of a few really top players rather than an even spread. Captaincy wins out.

Are you saying to get a second 4.5 mid?

For the love of god, don't get Dyer.

Your team looks pretty good to me. Consider getting Cech and Warnock instead of Given and Cole: saves you 0.5m with the same defences covered. Fitting Rooney and RVP in is very tempting (and Lampard!) but I wonder if you might downgrade one of them to say Suarez. With those 2 changes you've then got 3m extra and Derry becomes N'Zogbia, and you've got a team I'm thinking about copying!

Only problem about the Given/Cold to Cech/Warnock is it removes the chance of goals & assists from Cole. You'd expect with the new managers attacking intent he'd acquire a few of these this year.

Had a great season with Watford last year..tends to score goals in bunches...6 matches in a row then a quiet spell..has (limited) Premier experience with Mboro so may well be able to make the step up and could prove a very cheap and useful FF player..a potential dark horse but I don't think he's scored yet pre-season so he is still obviously settling in to his new club..

Any suggestions on how to improve this squad? I feel like I have a strong selection of heavy hitters offset with some good value buys that should increase value and rack up those points. RVP for Rooney once he gets tired.

    Given (Moreira)
    Baines Kompany O'Shea (Simpson, Ward)
    Lampard N'Zogbia O'Hara Sinclair (Dyer)

ok - I think I have got some kind of team, need help with 3 players though

    GK
Given - Starts every game for me
Ruddy - Just sits on bench all season

    Defence
A.Cole - Attacking and defensive points
Kompany - Best defender price wise in the game
Baines - Attacking and defensive points
    Wilkonson - Bench
    Simpson - Bench

    Midfield
Barton - Quite cheap in FPL, may be on penalties and takes all set pieces
    VDV - I love VDV 😀
Silva- I think Silva will be last seasons Nani
Kalou - My chelsea attacker, risky - but even if he doesn't start games he usually comes on and scores. 10 goals and 5 assists last season.
Bradley Johnson - My sneaky pick

    Strikers
Rooney - Best player in EPL
Zamora - I always have him in FPL, he scores and assists
Graham - Cheap striker to play in home games.

My only worries really are Kalou, Johnson and Graham. I keep transferring them out and replacing them with other players like Holt, Taarabat, N'Zogbia etc.

Have you picked out your 4m defenders yet? I'd be suprised if anyone you pick up for that money is getting you anything more than 2 points a week... and whilst you can probably rely on Lampard, VDV, RVP and Bent to get you points most weeks, I'm not sure N'Zogbia, Taarabt and Albrighton will be scoring highly enough to make up for your defence.

You'll have to use a minimum of two 4mil defenders each week, maybe more depending on injuries/suspensions to the rest of your team. You'll be lucky to have even 1 week in the whole season where both of you 4 mill defenders get clean sheets.
Therefore you hang your hat on Kompany; if ManC concede you look at a very low scoring week.

Dempsey at 8.5mil is just too expensive, plenty options at that price range and lower, I will be avoiding at the beginning.

For the start of the season, Dempsey is too pricey I think. That said he could be a handy differential and Fulham's fixtures are very friendly.
Baines is f*cking expensive, and as much as I want him, he's messing up the balance of my team a bit, so I'm not 100% sold on him- especially as Everton often start slow.
Drogba is a lot of money for someone not guaranteed a place. Which is a shame, because he was a constant for me the last couple of seasons (my old team name Cesc, Drogs and Rock 'n' Roll appears to be redundant, which is upsetting)

    Cech - Ruddy
Baines - Kompany - Brown - Orr - De Laet
    Silva - VDV - N'Zogbia - Moses - Tiote

    Hey Guys,

First time player longtime supporter. Just putting out there for a few tips. here's my side below.

    Hart
    Baines Kompany Jose Enrique Sagna
    Sinclair Taarabt Bale Faurlin
    Suarez Holt
    (Given)
    (Luiz)
    (Wilshere)
    (Gervinho)

My thoughts are putting the solid defenders in there with Baines, Kompany, Sagna and Enrique was a late choice only because of his minutes he plays, He's also one who plays in the starting side and scores goals. The midfield I've had good think about it although I don't have VDV in the side, watching Taarabt & Faurlin last yr in the championship they are good assist players who play full matches as well as goal scorers with Sinclair easy choice I reckon he'll be in his element in PL this yr and will have a lot of goals in him. With the Front line, I'm going with Suarez he'll be on a little bit of a high after the Uruguay win and Holt well lets call him and X-factor. He was 2nd highest goal scorer in championship and a leader of the team. Decision on who will start and who will be on the bench are still there, any thoughts???

Hart and Given is a mistake. You don't need both and could free up some money. I don't know Faurlin yet, so it may well be a good call if you know something we don't. Luiz and Gervinho are risky at this stage as we don't know how much they'll be playing.

Good to see a team which is not a cookie cutter of the rest but imo there are serious issues with it.
Firstly, way too much in defence and Luiz is not nailed on. Goal keepers are excessive as well
Midfield - you are making the assumption with 3 players that they will make the transition to PL, the other 2, Bale may end up left back for part of the season and Wilshere isn't guaranteed a start either. This is where you need some proven heavy hitters are lots of points come from here.
Forwards - Suarez probably misses 2 games, Holt unproven at PL level and Gervinho I would prefer to wait and see how he is used.
Good luck and enjoy your season, this is only my opinion remember, you may end up being a genius!!

you've got five attackers that are unproven in the premier league. We see every season there's no way of knowing how well they'll adapt. Speaking from experience it's best to play it safe at the start, you've got 38 free trades to bring them in if they dont flop. That team will screams week two wildcard. I'm starting with two unproven attackers and no rotation risks.

I would say your midfield is way too weak and full of too many gambles.
Suarez prob wont start the season until week 2 or 3.
Luiz may or may not be a starter
Wilshere, whilst a good player, in terms of a FPL prospect i don't really like him as he does not score enough goals nor provide enough assists to be a viable option.
Gervinho is a gamble, but it may pay off, just remember Arsenal have a hard first few weeks and hes only new to the PL.

Why won't Beattie start? I take it you're thinking Swansea will go 4-5-1 most games? He's doing well in pre-season by all accounts.

    Thoughts on when to wildcard?

Last year was my first so I didn't really plan ahead, I used the WC just after AC scored his hat-trick v Villa (GW2/3) and changed my whole team around (all of my defenders were 6m or over ) At first I thought I played it too early, but the second WC means to me that you should play it pre-crimbo. Ended up finishing in the top 4k so it paid off 😀

The first two international breaks are just after GW3 and after GW7 too, probably will go for the latter myself 🙂
