The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Since when does it matter about the team that said player plays for? Wigan were terrible with N'Zog.

He was a big fish in a small pond.

tbf he didn't play a minute in the league last season, but he signed in January for a decent price and has looked pretty good in pre-season.

Hope they add him, I would of thought he'd get more game time than players like Goulon & Lowe.

Right lads, I haven't been around lately at all and don't really know what's happening in the world of football/FPL so I'd appreciate if anyone could answer some or all of these questions 🙂

    FPL
    1) Any cheap 5th midfielder worth looking at? Have Hoolahan at the moment but he's a bit costy and I'm tight on funds.
    2) Suarez, will he start the season or not?
    3) I see Kuyt and Malouda have low ownership, anyone tempted by them? (I think I'll definitely have Kuyt if Suarez misses the start of the season)

    Football
    1) Where does it look like Tevez will be heading, if anywhere?
    2) Any advances on Sneijder?
    3) Anything else major happen? (I'm aware of Aguero and N'Zogbia moving).

It feels weird being this clued out of football, normally I'm on top of it all. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

      FPL

      1) Moses- You can read all about him on this here page. Tasty opening fixtures, and is sure to be Wigan's attacking force, after the departure of N'zogbia

      2) It's all up in the air, i think he'll be rested for the 1st and be back for the 2nd.

      3) I'm definitely tempted by both, yes. It's out of them two and VDV, for my big hitter in midfield.

      Football

      1) Inter i think
      2) Nope
      3) Bale got two assists today 😯

        Lol cheers Demi.

Serious lack of value in midfield it seems. I like the look of Kuyt with penalties, but those home games for Malouda are worth looking at too. VDV can wait a few weeks, Silva needs to prove he doesn't have Modricitis, Yaya - maybe.

Any Balotelli wagon? I made my team the night FPL came out and only looked at it again a few minutes ago, and he seems to be sitting beside Rooney as it stands 🙂

Also, this Briggs chap, do we think he'll start or will Dempsey's return put him back on the bench?

No Balotelli wagon for me. Did you catch his attempted back-heel goal in the pre-season game. Mancini was not best pleased 😀

Dzeko could be worth a punt if Tevez leaves, a cheaper option than Aguero, who may not get off the ground running.

Wouldn't get Yaya personally, i've gone off him. The extra 1.5m for Silva is just about worth it i think.

To my recollection, i think when Dempsey comes back, Briggs will revert back to the bench. Jol probably using him in these pre-season games just go get a feel of being with the team as he's still fairly young. I don't expect him to feature much at all.

    Will prob

Richards >> Kompany (will see what happens in community shield but reckon Richards is nailed on for that RB role now that Boatang has left and Richards gets forward a lot).

May downgrade Cole/ Bains depending on Aguero/ Suarez fitness/ performance over next couple of pre season games. Not sure about Rooney/ RVP though… away from home 1st game then tough fixtures. And dont want Bent as I have N’zog. So wouldnt even know where else to look for expensive forwards. Perhaps Chelsea.

    Assuming no changes… your thoughts!?

    Given / Al-Habsi
Kompany. Cole A. Baines / Simpson. Orr
Malouda. N’Zogbia. Taarabt. Sinclair / Tiote
    Aguero. Suarez. Holt

also, many QPR fans consider bradley orr as the weak link, in the championship he was quickly ousted when kyle walker joined. it seems this years fantasy football devotees have a lot of time for orr, but in reality he'll struggle for game time once an adequete replacement is sourced. many fancy the man city defender onouha (probably miss-spelt).

        Yeah I know 🙁

The problem I have trying to go with 2 x 11m+ strikers is I have to really have one of either Rooney or RVP. If I go RVP then I have no Utd coverage unless I go Young, and if I go Young I can't get Malouda.

I could get Cole instead of Baines. but Everton's GW2 fixture is nice.

Other option is to take a punt on Benayoun.

I have a hunch that Young will be rotated less than Nani and Valencia. At least that's what I hope with his selection 🙂

He should be on FKs and maybe corners and could provide a few assists and be given the chance to get into even more goal scoring opportunities than he had at Villa.

    Ivanovic Kompany Simpson Alcaraz Briggs/Orr
    VDV Taarabt Nzog Sessangon Reo-Coker
    RVP Augero Zamora

Thinking need to free up 0.5 from somewhere so can upgarde VDV to Malouda for GW2+ – any thoughts?

Halftime report live from the Emirates 🙂

    Fabianski
    Jenkinson Koscielny Djourou Traore
    Wilshere Frimpong
    Gervinho Nasri Arshavin
    RVP

Gervinho looking lively. Got the assist & winning free kicks.

RVP clinical. Looks pretty laidback out there today.

    Nasri not quite himself.

    Arshavin anonymous.

    Frimpong playing well.

    Jack getting stuck in.

    CBs solid. Keeper not troubled.

Traore looks good, Jenkinson maybe not so much.

He is very like Luis Suarez with his movement off the ball and his ability to appear on both wings and cut inside.

Being classed as a forward when you're a (wide) midfielder isn't too bad, but being a defender classed as a midfielder certainly is.

Depending on transfers, he could get plenty of game time and a nice number of goals/assists. Personally I'm keeping an eye on Ramsey and Gervinho, but Nasri/Fabregas stay I'd probably bring in Walcott.

Second choice defence today. Koscielny off now, Squillaci on.

I assume The Verminator is fully operational.

Pretty much agree with that, although I think the opposite on Traore/Jenkinson.

Boca are slightly agricultural, but so long as we don't get any injuries then I guess it's good practice for Stoke.

    RMT please gents:

    Given (Ruddy)

Cahil - Samba - Kompany (Gabbidon and Caulker)

    Brunt - Silva - Barton - Downing - Taarabt

    Rooney - Aguero (S. Fletcher)

Happy to downgrade one midfielder to get a better reserve defender if anyone has any thoughts?

It's quite difficult to fit in Aguero, RVP, Young, Malouda and Baines. Which one to go? I guess the general consensus will be Young...
