There’s plenty of Premier League clubs in action this afternoon, as pre-season starts to pick up the pace. Ahead of an afternoon in front of the tv with the Emirates Cup and Dublin Super Cup served up as weekend offerings, here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Roberto Mancini has warned his Premier League rivals that the signing of Sergio Aguero won’t be Man City’s last this summer. Speaking in a press conference ahead of this weekend’s Dublin Super Cup, the Italian explained:

If we want to compete with all the other top teams – Champions League or Premier League – we need other players, but the club are working in this way.

When asked what positions he felt the club needed to bolster, Mancini elaborated:

“One midfielder, one winger.”

This statement will only add to the speculation of a move for Samir Nasri and perhaps further re-inforce the idea that Adam Johnson could be heading to Everton in a loan deal, with Mancini yet to be convinced by his young winger’s consistency, much to the chagrin of the City fans.

James Collins has spoken at length of the new defensive solidity shown by Aston Villa in pre-season. Villa were something of a disappointment in terms of Fantasy investment last season, racking up just 7 clean sheets compared to 15 in the previous 2009/10 campaign but, under new boss Alex McLeish, are looking a better proposition at the back already.

Collins points to the re-introduction of Stephen Warnock to the starting XI as a significant boost to the side, saying:

Stephen had come back in and he’s been great. Obviously when he wasn’t in the team last season, you could still see in training he was still keen to show his qualities. Since he’s been back in, the two games he’s played and in training he’s looked first-class again. So that is like a new signing if you like. I am looking forward to playing with him again.

Warnock played just half Villa’s league games last season and as a result, comes in at 5.0, compared to the 5.5 of Collins and fellow centre-half Richard Dunne.

Aaron Ramsey looks likely to have a pivotal role for Arsenal in this weekend’s Emirates Cup. With Cesc Fabregas sidelined with a hamstring injury and Arsene Wenger concerned over his “unsettled” captain’s state of mind, Ramsey will take centre stage against the likes of Paris Saint Germain and New York Red Bulls over the next couple of days and spoke of his determination to make up for lost time, following his leg-break in February of last year. Playing in the advance central midfield role usually taken by Fabregas, many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Ramsey ahead of next season; with a 6.5 FPL price-tag against his name, the young Welshman may be a steal.

In other Arsenal-related news, Arsene Wenger confirmed the news that Theo Walcott’s ankle injury is not as bad as the club had anticipated. Asked in yesterday’s press conference if the player will be ready for the start of the season in a fortnight’s time, Wenger replied that the club are hopeful on the matter. A bit of good news for the Gunners, then.

The idea of a Carlos Tevez/Samuel Eto’o swap deal has re-surfaced once again. Both Man City and Inter Milan are taking part in this weekend’s Dublin Super Cup and with Tevez desperate for a move away from the Etihad Stadium, City are reportedly determined to seal a deal for Eto’o, their long-term target.

A hamstring injury may have scuppered John O’Shea’s start to his Sunderland career, but Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is confident his new captain will be fit for the season opener at Liverpool:

I’ve got no worries about John. I’m not looking at risking him in our next two friendlies – it’s a case of erring on the right side caution….the knock he’s got is not a serious one. And he’s one of those players who can come into training and pick things up very quickly. As things stand, I’m sure he’ll be all right for the Liverpool game.

Great news, then, for Fantasy managers considering O’Shea ahead of the August 13th kick-off. Priced at 5.0 in FPL, we’re expecting big things from the Irishman this season, too; check out our Members Projections area to see just why.

QPR look set to boost their forward options by snapping up DJ Campbell from relegated Blackpool. Campbell was one of the best value Fantasy options last term, scoring 13 goals for Ian Holloway’s side, but while Blackpool were given license to attack by Holloway’s open 4-3-3 formation, QPR tend to operate far more tentatively, with a 4-2-3-1 shape set up to get the best out of Adel Taarabt. Campbell may well be vying with fellow new signing Jay Bothroyd for the lone forward slot, unless Neil Warnock has an alternative plan up his sleeve.

Spurs were the only Premier League club in action yesterday, chalking up a 4-1 win at Leyton Orient. Nico Krancjar continued his fantastic pre-season form by grabbing a goal, with Peter Crouch picking up a double in the one-sided affair. Krancjar is a real source of frustration for Fantasy managers- clearly, he’s got the talent but, in spite of his recent impressive form, it would be something of a surprise if he found his way into Harry Redknapp’s first-team thinking at Tottenham. At just 6.0, many will be hoping ‘Arry has a change of heart, particularly if Luka Modric does depart the Lane this summer.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

You might be better off doubling up on another Wigan defender (Figueroa). On the surface people might laugh, but Honestly, Simpson against Arsenal...? Bardsley against Liverpool...away? I started out with Baines...but it's too early, he may very well come away from Spurs away with 1 pt. At least with Wigan defenders that play, and have a sharpened nose for goals at this time of the year (Alcaraz-Paraguay, don't know why Karlosll singled him out, outside of the straight red, he was in form and scored goals in set pieces for Paraguay).

I personally think they will all but scrap the 4-3-3...Fat Frank will have to kick rocks, AVB will have them in the 4-2-3-1, and with the discipline of the low football IQer's (see anelka, Kalou) they may bastardize it into a 4-5-1...in any event Benayoun, barring any injury seems the likely one to hold down that front triangle. To me the only unknown is upfront. Hopefully AVB will give the heads up on formation, but if Benayoun is in slotted forward it doesn't look great for Drogba. I fear he will be platooned with the low IQers.

Wilshere, Barton is bad enough...I'm assuming DeLaet is 4.0 filler. But I honestly do hope Fat Frank works for people, his cost is absolutely crippling people. Then you end up with three in the back with the other two playing top 5 competition away from home. I'd honestly get Song before Jack, I think Jack will have a breakout year but he seems to do well against better competition that really put pressure in the midfield. He's a midget that corners like a Porsche on the pitch. Everyone else looks good....though you'll probably wish you got Moses instead of Barton...I don't like him against Arsenal...they will NOT see a lot of the ball. And when he gets frustrated...well you know. Do bookies take bets on the first yellow card because between him and Tiote, it could get ugly. Arsenal owes them an ass whoopin...

Doubling up on Newcastle is madness, I'm guessing you're relying on Enrique moving on!

Not entirely sold on Malouda, it will be interesting to see how many starts he gets. If you have 0.5 in the bank, then Cole for Ivanovic for a much better chance of attacking returns. For your cheapies in defence, I alwyas find it better to ensure they rotate well, so when your forced to play them at least one will be at home. Both Newcastle and QPR rotate well with Swansea so I would look to replace either Orr or Simpson with a Swansea defender.

One would certainly agree in a perfect world where Ireland and Albrighton could handle the hole. Lets see how well the service the speed outside, I definitely don't trust them (well...Ireland) to be able to give bent proper service. We'll see, it DOES make the most sense, hopefully for the level of play it works.

He just can't quit the crack...

"Lining his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation (Albrighton, Ireland and Heskey behind Darren Bent) was perhaps the first hint of tactics to come this season." Sounds like Albrighton and Heskey were wide...

They lined-up in the 4-4-2 against Blackburn.

I don't even like Baines for GW1..but I could NEVER say sit him. Other than Kompany, I'll have to call bS on the "solid defense tactic" Cashley, Orr, or Simpson ain't gonna get it...dare I say hot trash. If you would have said something like:

Rafael, Samba, Figeroa, Alcaraz, Hangeland for GW1 I would have taken that seriously.

      Your midfield is very strong.

Playing Holt up front isn't that bad, it just goes downhill after GW1. Personally I think that Wigan will be an extremely strong team this season. Even moreso should they get valdez. Might as well try Holt out GW1, but if you want to be cautious sit him and play 5 in the back this week. I can't see a promoted team putting up more than a goal.

Okay, im gonna upload my team and the justification behind each player...

Ruddy - Al Habsi (rotating these two, hoping for save points from these)

Kompany (does it need justification? clean sheets and citeh captain)
O'Shea (providing fit, sunderland captain, chance of clean sheets and always a starter)
Berra (Had a very good pre-season with wolves and at 4.5 could be a good cheap starter)

VDV (amazing player on all set pieces)
N'Zogbia (carried Wigan for the last couple of seasons and can do everything, score and assist)
O'Hara (Dead-ball specialist and a 'big fish in a small pond')
Taarabt (now hes staying he could be the new Charlie Adam for this season)

Rooney (Goalscorer, assists, set pieces, all-round class)
Bent (consistent goalscorer, with good delivery behind him in albrighton, nzog etc)
Aguero (bit risky this one, subject to change but i think he can cause big things this year!)

Some will say bad defence but i dont like risking the idea of clean sheets as they were quite hard to come by last season and the midfield i have gone for smaller players that can get points with set pieces etc.

Put all my money upfront as i want goals goals goals!

not really asking you to "RMT" i just wanted to let you know my thinking... feel free to give some constructive criticism tho...

    Generally excited this year!

Fully agree with the bent comment, are you sure you want to double up on Av with N Zog as well, if villa don't score you are in trouble. I would say one or the other would be a better tactic.

Also, no chelsea at all? You may regret that big time if/when they get off to a strong start as most people will have some form of coverage.

DON'T lose Hoilett, but what's up with people getting Sunderland and promoted defenders and feeling confident? Hoilett puts the ball in the net, besides, do people not care about matchups? If you ask me Wolves are goners. Rovers ain't goin nowhere, something about everyone hating Kean fuels this team. I have a feeling your midfield will get you 6 pts. though. I would change Lamps to Benayoun and barton to Moses. I don't think Sessegnon will give liverpool any problems either. But we shall see.

Dempsey is very expensive there a lot better options in midfield at a lower price, also Fulhams fixtures and good but I'm not sure that warrants both Dempsey and Hangeland.

Ferguson may be dirt cheap but I'm sure how many games he will actually get, the same for Briggs as well. Maybe look at Sunderland defence instead of Hangeland for good rotation with Simpson and to free up some funds to upgrade either Briggs or Ferguson.

Seriously, I'd loooove to hear the justification for playing ANYONE on Sunderland's defense GW1> on??? And why would anyone get rid of Hangeland just for a good rotation with an established shit player/defense? When Fulham and Newcastle meet GW3 who do you think is coming out with the clean sheet? I understand that Roy promises more attacking football, but remember this is Roy, give him a 1 goal lead and see what happens...Picking Briggs at this point is just plain greedy, if you're cheap get the Irishman Baird.

Surely he'd get a run out against Airtricity though if he's able, I just dont know if he quite is yet, yeah he'll almost certainly play against United in the CS but that could be his first start, he might be a late or half time sub today, you never know, I doubt it though. Hey would like some tips how to improve my team.

    Hart,Given
Briggs, Gibbs, Baines, ACole, Oshea(want to change him probably)
    Sessegnon, Taarabt, Sinclair, Moses, Benayoun
    Bent, Zamora, Rodallega

I am happy with my forwards, a lot of maybes in the midfield and no heavy hitters, will move benayoun if chelsea sign any midfielders, would like to bring in Ramsey or Arshavin if Fabre or Nasri get moved. Or Cahill, since Everton have pretty nice fixtures in the first 6 games.
About my defenders and keepers: Want to have some Man United cover, so I will switch Hart to De Gea or Lindegaard and will bring in Kompany for whoever is the worst on my defence. Also may switch out Gibbs for whoever Arsenal bring in at CB(if they do), will look to switch Cashley to Luiz if he gets to start.

All tips welcome, thanks in advance.

N'zogbia could do just as well at Villa, it will be just him and Bent scoring wont it? And Rodallega's 1st 3 fixtures look promising, I'd wait a few weeks before you reconsider.

I have N'zogbia. For Rodallega though, it's a gamble that Moses will fill the void left by the Zog and be able to supply Rod., otherwise Rod might struggle to get good service.

Far too much spent on GK's and Defenders.

Midfield and frontline are weak as a result.

Your never gonna get consitent decent scores relying on clean sheets.

You have virtually no solid captain choices. You'd have to gamble big time each week on Bent scoring and getting bonuses.

This is what happens when you blow almost a quarter of your budget on your keeper and 2 defenders!

When Zamora plays he scores, and yeah Benayoun is a good choice, I think AVB is fond of him, Clichy for Man City could get a few assists as well as clean sheets, competition for that left back position means Kompany is a safer option though.

I expect Makoun or Delph to partner him.

I'm a noob and more of a Serie A follower, so need help/advice on what I'm doing wrong here...

    Drogba
    Dembele
Dzeko (Banking on him finding form - if he does, 8.5m is an absolute bargain for a striker of his quality)

What do you guys reckon? A lot of 'ifs' in my team (Luis Enrique, Benayoun playing, N'Zog moving, Dzeko scoring) but I want to play it a bit risky and then use my wildcard if it's not working out. Opinions?
