Arsenal’s defence suffers the same old misfortune. Andres Villas-Boas picks up some silverware. Louis Saha grabs a goal on his return from injury. Shaun Wright-Phillips scored for Man City but still seems to be leaving and Bolton’s promising pre-season is overshadowed by an injury to Chung Yong-Lee that looks like sidelining the South Korean for up to nine months. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Arsenal’s back-four once again demonstrated just why so many Gunners fans are keen for defensive reinforcements. Two-nil up and coasting, Johan Djourou was particularly culpable as the side conceded two very avoidable goals and ended up drawing 2-2 with Boca Juniors. Arsene Wenger fielded more questions on the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in yesterday’s post-match press conference:

If Fabregas is committed to this Club and wants to stay, no money will get him out of here. We are not in a position where we need to sell our players. We want to keep our players. We are not looking after money. We want the players to stay here, from our side that is clear.

It’s not ideal for us (Nasri leaving for free) on the financial side but, on the sporting side, he is an important player. We have to deal with the situation one way or another. In the next ten days we have to be clear on that front.

Alex McLeish was upbeat in spite of Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in Hong Kong. One down within a minute, Villa had to chase the game and squad fitness, according to Big Eck, was a fundamental factor in the outcome:

One of the things is fitness and we were clearly behind Chelsea in terms of match fitness. They have played six games now and that’s our third. I thought our players looked a bit weary if I’m honest but we still managed to dig in right until the end. It was pleasing to see the guys fighting until the very end, despite the fact a lot of them were running on empty.

Blackburn grabbed third place in the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 3-0 win over hosts Kitchee. Chris Samba missed the game with a groin strain, but Rovers boss Steve Kean is confident his skipper’s absence is merely short-term :

Chris had a groin strain. He had a scan this morning and the doctor told us there was a little bit of fluid so it would have been a risk if he’d have played, he might have overstretched it. I’m sure he’ll be fit to play against Kilmarnock next Saturday in Scotland.

Bolton’s 3-1 friendly win at Newport was marred by a serious injury to Chung-Yong Lee. A horrendous, lunging tackle from an opposition player saw the South Korean stretchered off with a double fracture of his lower right leg and the player has already been operated on, Owen Coyle said last night :

“We will make sure Chung-Yong gets all the support he needs, as now it is all about his recovery and well-being. That is the most important thing. The operation went well and we would like to pass on our thanks to the medical staff involved.”

Lee is expected to be sidelined for around nine months and the injury means Trotters boy Chris Eagles, priced 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), may well prove a decent Fantasy alternative. Eagles played “in the hole” playing off striker Ivan Klasnic against Newport.

Chelsea picked up their first silverware under Andres Villas-Boas, with the 2-0 win over Aston Villa clinching the Barclays Asian Trophy. The Chelsea boss has yet to see his side concede a goal, and with six wins from his opening six games, has had an ideal pre-season thus far. Rather than single out individuals, Villas-Boas instead focused on his side’s work ethic as the most impressive aspect of his tenure:

Our defensive work is an offensive weapon, that’s what we have been telling the players. We want to attack more so for us to do that we have to get it back as soon as possible. These players have an excellent acceptance of these principles and are able to apply it.

Thanks to them and their commitment we are able to put these ideas across and I think they are enjoying it. Commitment-wise, motivationally, and the professionalism of the players has been something I haven’t seen before.

David Moyes will be pleased with Everton’s 2-1 win at Birmingham. Louis Saha, playing his first game since March, made an immediate impact by scoring just two minutes after coming on as a sub on the hour-mark at St Andrews. Leighton Baines fired home the Toffees first from a free-kick and reminded Fantasy managers just why FPL have priced him so highly, at 8.0, this season.

Shaun Wright-Phillips continued his impressive pre-season in Man City’s 3-0 win over an Airtricity XI. The player picked up his third goal in four game but despite Roberto Mancini recently admitting the club need another right winger, it’s clear Wright-Phiilips doesn’t rank highly in his manager’s thinking and a move from City seems imminent. Mancini said after the game:

For me, it’s difficult to put him on the bench. A player like Shaun deserves to play every game because he’s a strong player. But now, we have so many players it’s not easy for him. I need to speak with him in the next days. It’s difficult because Shaun is a good guy.

Wright-Phillips is just 6.5 in FPL and a move away from City could see him re-emerge as a potential Fantasy target, providing he gets the game time.

Norwich recorded a comfortable 3-0 win at Coventry yesterday but Paul Lambert’s post-match comments indicate plenty rotation can be expected round Carrow Road way next season, saying:

“It’s a 25-man squad and you’re going to need everybody at certain times. It is going to be a really hard season for us, but we’ve earned the right to be here.”

Fantasy managers will be awaiting the injury news on 10.0 FPL-rated Rafael Van der Vaart. The Dutchman was subbed off limping after a strong challenge in the first half of the club’s 3-2 over Brighton yesterday. Last year, the latter part of Van der Vaart’s season was bothered by a calf injury and Harry Redknapp made a habit of taking him off before the end of games, with the Spurs boss admitting concerns over his star player’s long-fitness back in April. In light of this latest incident, more of the same caution may be expected next term.

West Brom’s 1-0 win over Bristol City saw Roy Hodgson once again field Somen Tchoyi as a forward. The Cameroonian played up front alongside Peter Odemwingie and although he limped off in the 68th minute to be replaced by Simon Cox, Hodgson confirmed it was no more than a precautionary measure.

Hodgson confirmed the player is likely to be utilised mainly as a forward in the upcoming campaign, meaning Tchoyi -rated 5.5 in FPL and classified as a midfielder- will be one of this season’s out-of-position Fantasy players:

We don’t have many forwards we think are going to start.Odemwingie got his first full game today. He’s hardly taken any part in the pre-season matches up to now. We also have Simon Cox and Somen – and at the moment they are our main men.

Sir Alex Ferguson moved to dismiss a report attributing quotes to him on the future of Wesley Sneijder. Speaking in a post-match press conference following United’s 2-1 win over Barelona, Fergie described the story as absolute nonsense and chose to talk up the merits of Tom Cleverley instead:

Physically he is not the strongest but he is wiry and has a great idea of the game. He is a good footballer and was our best player today. His discipline was terrific. He is a quick passer of the ball. He has good eyes. It was a big night for him. He is a big, strong possibility for us to start the season.

Fergie also confirmed in this morning’s press conference that despite being taken off after only 17 minutes following a challenge with Sergio Busquets, Rafael should be okay.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

This has probably been discussed at length, but are either Kalou or Benayoun looking likely to be first choice players for Chelsea? I want to get a Chelsea midfielder as I think there are bette roptions than Drogba. Or perhaps simply a Drog- Malouda swap? Any help would be appreciated.

If AVB goes with the 4-2-3-1 they have been testing out then i think benayoun will start, he will play behind the lone striker and is an absolute bargain at 7.0. He has played a lot in pre season and has been very good. If chelsea dont buy a new player in benas position he is in my team for certain!

    Fantasy Premier League
    Budget

You only have £100 million pounds to
    select your Fantasy Premier League
team, wish I had a fraction of that in
my bank account! In Fantasy Premier
League you have to pick 15 players
and only 11 can play. In what positions should you spend your
millions? and where do you select
budget players? There are a couple ways you can
    spread money throughout the team
but the most effective way to optimize
the points your fantasy premier league
team scores is to make decisions
about your team before you start looking at players. Decide your Formation before you select your team, the most successful formation in fantasy premier league is the 3-4-3 formation (1 GoalKeeper, 3 Defenders, 4 Midfielders
& 3 Forwards) Read More This will leave you with 4 subs on your
fantasy premier league team – (1
    Goalkeeper, 2 Defenders, 1
Midfielders) Subs – Put As Little Money into these Players As Possible! I suggest spending a maximum of £17 million on these
positions – Why put extra money into
a player who probably wont play!!??! Fantasy Premier League Team

Starting xi – £83 million to
spend That works out at £7.5 million a man
but sadly its not that easy to pick a
strong all round team when forwards
like Drogba, Torres and Rooney are
£11.5- £13 million pounds each and
defenders like Evra, Vermaelan and Terry are £7 – 7.5 million each. It does
not add up! You need to select 2-3 top attacking players and supplement them with some cheaper attacking players and also some cheap defenders who play in teams that get clean sheets. Goalkeeper I recommend spending as little as
possible on this position – Look at
    teams like Stoke, Bolton,
Birmingham and Fulham. A couple of
these mid table teams will get 10-12
clean-sheets this season. Which is only 4-5 clean-sheets less than the Man
United & Chelsea can expect. That is
only 20 extra points a season and can
be the difference of £3 million to your
team, for every million you are looking
for a return of 21 points a season so therefore an expensive goalkeeper can cost you 40+ points a season and that is a margin that wins leagues. Defenders You have two options for you, you can
    buy two expensive defenders like
Evra and Vermaelan and pick 3 cheap
defenders or pick 5 cheap defenders.
Lets look at both. 2 Expensive & 3 Cheap Defenders You would expect to get 160 points
    from your expensive defenders and
90 points from a good cheap
defender. With clever rotation you can
get 120 points out of cheap defenders
a season. You simply rotate them by playing them when they have home
games not against all teams accept the
top four and risk them against away to
weaker teams. You are simply hoping
for a clean sheet. This would give you
410+ points over a season. 5 Cheap Defenders Playing with 5 cheap defenders means
that you need to rotate all 5 defenders
weekly which can be difficult. It also
will only give you 360+ points a
season but there are major benefits.
You can save £7 million and strengthen your midfielders and
forwards. This would give you an
    additional 150 points which would
give you 510+ points. So the better
manager will do this but its difficult to
keep on top of this. If this is your first time playing or you have a weak
    football knowledge I recommend
getting 2 expensive defenders. Midfielders & Forwards You need to have two or three top
    players like Fabregas, Gerrard,
    Rooney, Drogba, Arshavin, Van
Persie or Lampard. One of these
players will be your captain (Captain
gets double points) most weeks because they consistently score the
most points with their goals, assists
and bonus points. When assessing cheaper midfielders &
    forwards you should assess their
    ability to score goals, ability/
    opportunity to take freekicks &
    penalties and most importantly their
fixtures. These are the players you will transfer most throughout the season.
You should sign up for our free weekly transfer tips in the sidebar on the right or email our team at fpltransfers@gmail.com.

Copy and pasted, but there's good stuff in there.

Personally, rotating 5 defenders at the back is probably going to cost you this season seeing as there's so little value in players at 4.5 compared to recent seasons.

That said, have a look at this team:

      Given, Ruddy
      Wilkinson, Bramble, Simpson, Briggs, Orr
      Malouda, Silva, Sessegnon, Sinclair, Ephraim

    Defenders

You have two options for you, you can buy two expensive defenders like Evra and Vermaelan and pick 3 cheap defenders or pick 5 cheap defenders. Lets look at both. 2 Expensive & 3 Cheap Defenders You would expect to get 160 points

weaker teams. You are simply hoping for a clean sheet. This would give you 410+ points over a season. 5 Cheap Defenders Playing with 5 cheap defenders means
that you need to rotate all 5 defenders weekly which can be difficult. It also will only give you 360+ points a season but there are major benefits. You can save £7 million and strengthen your midfielders and forwards. This would give you an additional 150 points which would
give you 510+ points. So the better
manager will do this but its difficult to keep on top of this. If this is your first time playing or you have a weak football knowledge I recommend getting 2 expensive defenders. Midfielders & Forwards

You've spent a fortune on your defence so its not a very balanced team imo, it's tough to get any strength in mid & forward when you do this. I'd downgrade Cole or Baines to a 6mill, & use the 5 mill to beef up that mid a bit. Bin Murphy first. & Ben Arfa may miss the start of the season methinks.

I think you could put it down to the success of last year's promoted teams in fantasy terms.

Anyone expecting the likes of Carroll, Campbell and Adam's returns to be replicated by anyone this year is having a laugh.

And you could add to that the fact that prices are so competitive this year, which means there are genuinely few budget options outside the relegated teams.

Nobody will reach the heights of Adam, he fluked his way to a lot of points though just because of cheap penalties and 3 bonus points every game

There could be a decent striker, I remember Andy Johnson being a sneaky purchase back in the day (05-06?)

There are likely to be some, and penalty takers makes sense, if they are not on your bench the week they get one. Do people really expect their Norwich,Swansea and QPR defenders or goalie to score them much? Or to stay on the bench because they above all have chosen a starting eleven with no unexpected rotation? Good luck to all. 🙂

It is tempting though. Swansea & QPR both have good fixtures up front and are reliant on one attacking player which is good from a fantasy point of view. If one wants to take a punt I think from the start is a good option. For example if Taarabt is to score big it probably would happen in the first few games with BOL wig NEW wol AVL & BLA all among the first 8 games. Add to that the fact that promoted teams typically start well and then fade away. Worth a punt or two and if it doesnt work out transfer to a more consistent player like Barton or O'Hara.

I wouldnt go with 5 of these players but I'd certainly be comfortbale with two of Taarabt Sinclair Holt/ Hoolahan in my side.

Fixtures is a good point. The promoted teams have excellent home fixtures, which makes them a better bet (especially for rotation) early on.

I've got promoted defenders in my team to permit heavier investment in midfield and attack - and they're there because I'm happy to rotate them.

Sinclair or Taarabt from the start if you can choose only one? Votes please and why!

I'm siding with Sinclair (only just!) mainly due to the impression that Swansea will be a more attacking team. I think they are both equally pivotal to their respective sides and both on pens.

It's very difficult to decide. Taarabt may not set on fire in the prem, then again neither might Sinclairr. S is cheaper, but Swansea rely on a huge share of possession, something they will not get in the Prem. At a push, I'd say SInclair might just senak it, as I think QPR are certs for relegation.

RMT please. Objective - 4 big budget captain potentials and cheap players around them capable of scoring points on their own merit. No cheap bench fodder like Ferguson.

    Given Ruddy

    Kompany Luiz Simpson Caulker Briggs

    VDV Silva Sessegnon Sinclair Moses

    Bent Zamora RVP

0.5 in the bank for possible Sinclair-> Taarabt or VDV-> Malouda.

Newcastle & Swansea rotate well defensively. I know Luiz & Briggs are rotation risks so will track that.

I think City & esp Chelsea attacking coverage in the beginning is going to be a must. At least a plan for Chelsea coverage for GW 2 & 3.

Also which Wilkinson is this? Stoke? Is he a starter?

Looks good otherwise, I know the $ is concentrated in attack but can probably be shifted a bit to midfield with two transfers.

Cheers Kevin, in terms of expensive midfielders only Malouda comes to mind as value for money with strong fixtures. Food for thought. Last season it was often the case we built ourselves up for routine thrashings by the likes of Chelsea and we were left to rue a butchered team and poor captain choices. Decisions, decisions.

Wilkinson, as far as I can tell he seems nailed on for right back as Dickinson has just left. I'm wary of Shotton and my source was that Needlevor guy...

Tricky, though I like your team. May as well leave Dyer as bench fodder as the only worthwhile 5.5 midfielder is the injured Ben Arfa Imho (although Hoolahan is not bad shout, though not necessarily worth a precious extra mill). Perhaps go for Cole. Guaranteed to play and pick up loads of points at the start of the season...

    I have a question.
I've seen a lot of teams with Alcaraz selected as a cheap defensive option - and i can see the reasoning with Wigan's gentle start.

But why is Alacaraz on 53000 picks and Figueroa on 13000 picks?
Hasn't Figueroa got more attacking potential?

I'd just like to point out a major consideration when it comes to 1st GW team selection. Because of the way the pricing works: 10% out = -.1 and 10000 in means +.1 A player with lower ownership has the same potential for losing value as one with high ownership since its based on % but has a greater potential for gaining value since its based on pure numbers...

This makes players like Carrol great for money making...

Try select solid players with good fixtures that no one else seems to have selected and you should be able to gain a lot of value in your team which is really important in the first 10 game weeks...

          Malouda.

Of the midfielders priced at 11, has the easier fixtures to start with, and if the pre-season is anything to go by, he looks like a certain starter for Chelsea, along with Lampard.

With Tremmel being brought in, you might want to reconsider Moreira. I'm unsure who starts.

Sinclair & Taarbt are both penalty takers and both scored 20goals last season with endless assists. Moses was tracked by Barca before he joined wigan. All 3 are wonderkids and very cheap would expect all of them bagging around 10goals for season.

Your midfield has Ferguson whom will prob not play, two promoted players and Moses whom reamins to be proven imo. Strikeforce looks really good though

Looking at a Swansea defender as they rotate well with Newcastle.
I have seen Caulker's name on a few RTM'S. Is he going to play or should I go for Taylor or Rangel.

Rangel & Williams are definite starters but both 4.5. Of the 4.0s, I think Monk is the captain but he's injured. Keeping an eye on both Caulker and Taylor. Taylor was the LB Newcastle bid for as a potential replacement for Enrique so he must have something about him.

Safest bet is Malouda in midfield. A.Cole and Terry in Defence.

Where is Malouda likely to play?

Has Boas even come close to deciding on a formation and a starting XI

Left wing in a 4-3-3. He's fairly assured. I'm certainly hoping it's the case.

      Leicester City

The division’s big spenders. Matt Mills, Kasper Schmeichel, David Nugent, Paul Konchesky and Michael Johnson have all come in, and Eriksson knows that nothing less than promotion will suffice. With a good mixture of youth and experience and depth in every position, it is well within their grasp.

      Prediction: 1st

      Looks OK to me 🙂

    Any problems with this?

    Given, Ruddy
    Kompany, Baines, Bramble, Orr, Simpson
    Lampard, N'Zog, Barton, Taarabt, Moses
    Aguero, Suarez, Zamroa

First transfer will be Aguero to either Torres or the Drog

It's pretty. I like it. Prefer Sinclair or a few other options to Barton though, and I wouldn't shoe in Torres or Drogba. I can see neither of them holding down a starting spot and just getting rotated all season.

        Yea thats what I think....

Early season plan is to change Aguero to Drog/Torres for gw1 and then get rid of lampard and drog/tor for gameweek 4 (cheaper mid and rvp coming in).

I am going with Frank just because he looks certain to play, although I might go with Malou instead

I can see Barton being as pivotal to Newcastle as most midfielders elsewhere, and they have a very good start.

some really tempremental sides floating around. Some with a handful of potential bosellis.

Think i'm opting for a 343 as mid range forwards seems a more reliable source points, Zamora gyan etc. Also massively Suprised downing is being overlooked

team is settled, keeping an eye on ramsey, jags, samba's situations and potential loan bargains

i agree on all counts. holt is getting to the end of his career, odem had a cracker 1st year but who knows if he will follow up, downing is a star and im a lfc fan so that doesnt help the bias there.
