Arsenal’s defence suffers the same old misfortune. Andres Villas-Boas picks up some silverware. Louis Saha grabs a goal on his return from injury. Shaun Wright-Phillips scored for Man City but still seems to be leaving and Bolton’s promising pre-season is overshadowed by an injury to Chung Yong-Lee that looks like sidelining the South Korean for up to nine months. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Arsenal’s back-four once again demonstrated just why so many Gunners fans are keen for defensive reinforcements. Two-nil up and coasting, Johan Djourou was particularly culpable as the side conceded two very avoidable goals and ended up drawing 2-2 with Boca Juniors. Arsene Wenger fielded more questions on the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in yesterday’s post-match press conference:

If Fabregas is committed to this Club and wants to stay, no money will get him out of here. We are not in a position where we need to sell our players. We want to keep our players. We are not looking after money. We want the players to stay here, from our side that is clear.

It’s not ideal for us (Nasri leaving for free) on the financial side but, on the sporting side, he is an important player. We have to deal with the situation one way or another. In the next ten days we have to be clear on that front.

Alex McLeish was upbeat in spite of Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in Hong Kong. One down within a minute, Villa had to chase the game and squad fitness, according to Big Eck, was a fundamental factor in the outcome:

One of the things is fitness and we were clearly behind Chelsea in terms of match fitness. They have played six games now and that’s our third. I thought our players looked a bit weary if I’m honest but we still managed to dig in right until the end. It was pleasing to see the guys fighting until the very end, despite the fact a lot of them were running on empty.

Blackburn grabbed third place in the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 3-0 win over hosts Kitchee. Chris Samba missed the game with a groin strain, but Rovers boss Steve Kean is confident his skipper’s absence is merely short-term :

Chris had a groin strain. He had a scan this morning and the doctor told us there was a little bit of fluid so it would have been a risk if he’d have played, he might have overstretched it. I’m sure he’ll be fit to play against Kilmarnock next Saturday in Scotland.

Bolton’s 3-1 friendly win at Newport was marred by a serious injury to Chung-Yong Lee. A horrendous, lunging tackle from an opposition player saw the South Korean stretchered off with a double fracture of his lower right leg and the player has already been operated on, Owen Coyle said last night :

“We will make sure Chung-Yong gets all the support he needs, as now it is all about his recovery and well-being. That is the most important thing. The operation went well and we would like to pass on our thanks to the medical staff involved.”

Lee is expected to be sidelined for around nine months and the injury means Trotters boy Chris Eagles, priced 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), may well prove a decent Fantasy alternative. Eagles played “in the hole” playing off striker Ivan Klasnic against Newport.

Chelsea picked up their first silverware under Andres Villas-Boas, with the 2-0 win over Aston Villa clinching the Barclays Asian Trophy. The Chelsea boss has yet to see his side concede a goal, and with six wins from his opening six games, has had an ideal pre-season thus far. Rather than single out individuals, Villas-Boas instead focused on his side’s work ethic as the most impressive aspect of his tenure:

Our defensive work is an offensive weapon, that’s what we have been telling the players. We want to attack more so for us to do that we have to get it back as soon as possible. These players have an excellent acceptance of these principles and are able to apply it.

Thanks to them and their commitment we are able to put these ideas across and I think they are enjoying it. Commitment-wise, motivationally, and the professionalism of the players has been something I haven’t seen before.

David Moyes will be pleased with Everton’s 2-1 win at Birmingham. Louis Saha, playing his first game since March, made an immediate impact by scoring just two minutes after coming on as a sub on the hour-mark at St Andrews. Leighton Baines fired home the Toffees first from a free-kick and reminded Fantasy managers just why FPL have priced him so highly, at 8.0, this season.

Shaun Wright-Phillips continued his impressive pre-season in Man City’s 3-0 win over an Airtricity XI. The player picked up his third goal in four game but despite Roberto Mancini recently admitting the club need another right winger, it’s clear Wright-Phiilips doesn’t rank highly in his manager’s thinking and a move from City seems imminent. Mancini said after the game:

For me, it’s difficult to put him on the bench. A player like Shaun deserves to play every game because he’s a strong player. But now, we have so many players it’s not easy for him. I need to speak with him in the next days. It’s difficult because Shaun is a good guy.

Wright-Phillips is just 6.5 in FPL and a move away from City could see him re-emerge as a potential Fantasy target, providing he gets the game time.

Norwich recorded a comfortable 3-0 win at Coventry yesterday but Paul Lambert’s post-match comments indicate plenty rotation can be expected round Carrow Road way next season, saying:

“It’s a 25-man squad and you’re going to need everybody at certain times. It is going to be a really hard season for us, but we’ve earned the right to be here.”

Fantasy managers will be awaiting the injury news on 10.0 FPL-rated Rafael Van der Vaart. The Dutchman was subbed off limping after a strong challenge in the first half of the club’s 3-2 over Brighton yesterday. Last year, the latter part of Van der Vaart’s season was bothered by a calf injury and Harry Redknapp made a habit of taking him off before the end of games, with the Spurs boss admitting concerns over his star player’s long-fitness back in April. In light of this latest incident, more of the same caution may be expected next term.

West Brom’s 1-0 win over Bristol City saw Roy Hodgson once again field Somen Tchoyi as a forward. The Cameroonian played up front alongside Peter Odemwingie and although he limped off in the 68th minute to be replaced by Simon Cox, Hodgson confirmed it was no more than a precautionary measure.

Hodgson confirmed the player is likely to be utilised mainly as a forward in the upcoming campaign, meaning Tchoyi -rated 5.5 in FPL and classified as a midfielder- will be one of this season’s out-of-position Fantasy players:

We don’t have many forwards we think are going to start.Odemwingie got his first full game today. He’s hardly taken any part in the pre-season matches up to now. We also have Simon Cox and Somen – and at the moment they are our main men.

Sir Alex Ferguson moved to dismiss a report attributing quotes to him on the future of Wesley Sneijder. Speaking in a post-match press conference following United’s 2-1 win over Barelona, Fergie described the story as absolute nonsense and chose to talk up the merits of Tom Cleverley instead:

Physically he is not the strongest but he is wiry and has a great idea of the game. He is a good footballer and was our best player today. His discipline was terrific. He is a quick passer of the ball. He has good eyes. It was a big night for him. He is a big, strong possibility for us to start the season.

Fergie also confirmed in this morning’s press conference that despite being taken off after only 17 minutes following a challenge with Sergio Busquets, Rafael should be okay.

Anybody considered not even having Kompany in the team?

Look what I made! It's very, very risky, but if some of these 4.0s start, it could be amazing. (I don't think I have the balls to change).

You're defence is a bit of an embarrasment, you could be looking at 3-6 points for ur whole defence for the week! No attacking threat, not a lot of clean sheet chances... i just dont know... i'd definitely reconsider.

        +1

It's not every week that you're attackers will fire, especially when they play each other, and you'd be relying on your defence to save your gameweek.

Even if they're all starters, that defence is terrible and i can't see many clean sheets.

I agree. The defense is really weak, it most likely won't pay off. I'm not doing it, but just throwing it out there. If you rotate really astutely and get lucky, this could, could, just about work.

If they're all starters, it's not a bad team at all actually, but the problem is definitely alternatives. What happens if a few of them get dropped?

Woah... first team I've seen with 5 legit captaincy choices. I like it. I reckon its about finding the 4.0 and 4.5 defensive players who are nailed on to start. And in decent defensive sides. Newcastle, Sunderland, Fulham, Stoke should all keep a good number of clean sheets. Have to play the fixtures as well.

As AZs comment says though I'd like a couple of defenders to have some attacking potential. So maybe someone like Olsson (WBA)?

When selecting your fantasy league team...

    You SHOULD:

1.Pick a full squad of first team players. Some players in your team may get injured, ill, rested, or simply
become out of favour with their
    manager. You need a
full squad to compensate for any of
the above happening and to allow
    rotation.

    2. Pick a few cheap defenders who start for the lesser teams. These players are some of the cheapest in
the game, yet still gain clean sheet
    bonuses like more expensive
defenders. They may not be in your
first eleven every week but can prove
useful substitutes who can be rotated depending on opposition.

3.Choose one goalkeeper from a top team and one from a lesser team. The top team goalie will be your regular, but on the off chance
that this player doesn't play, your
reserve will automatically be brought on. This cheaper goalie will cost only a
fraction more than a goalie that
doesn't play at all. This slight price increase is worth it for permanent
goalkeeper cover and the points it
    could bring you.

4.Choose players based on recent season performances. Players who always start the season well should
take a place in your initial selections,
    while you should delay before
bringing in a player who tends to start
    slowly. Crucially, you should select
players who perform throughout the entire season. These players will not
    only drastically increase in price,
making your team more valuable, but
also give you a solid, consistent points
score and limit the number of transfers
    you need to make.

    5. Take on board our advice and keep checking back to our blog. We will update our blog at the start of
    each gameweek. By checking each
week you can find a number of great
    options to improve your team.

    You SHOULD NOT:

    1. Pick defensive midfielders. They may be an integral part of their team,
but they shouldn't be a part of yours.
They break up the play and are hard
to play against, but points come for
    goals and assists, not tackles.
Therefore you should ignore the temptation to bring in a high-flying
    defensive midfielder because of their
low price tag, they are cheap for a
    reason. Attacking, goal scoring
    midfielders should be selected instead,
they bring in the big points.

    2. Pick the star defender from a team. If the star defender is a regular goal scorer, or gets alot of assists, fine.
If not, a cheaper, but regular starting
defender is a better choice. They still
gain the point benefits of the teams
clean sheet, even if they weren't as
    crucial in it beign obtained.

    3. Select the cheapest player on the game just to fill your team. If a player isn't playing, they're useless to
    your team. Successful managers will
pay a tiny ammount more and get a
regular starter for one of the lower
teams; this gives them cover if one of
their starting line-up isn't playing. By doing this you will also have another
option if one of your bigger name
players is playing against one of the
    top teams.

    4. Assume that the highest priced players will be the highest scoring. Some players may be priced
    extortionately, but that doesn't mean
they will score as such. If a highly
priced player is off form, don't be
worried about getting rid of them.
Sometimes the cheap, lesser known players form your teams main points
    income.

    5. Leave your team without management, assuming automatic substitutions will sort it out. A good manager is an active manager. By
    making changes week-to-week you
can create the best, most competitive
team for each gameweek. By checking
back to this website, and viewing our
experts' tips, you can see the players our experts believe should be
    brought in and offloaded.

i'm not keen on picking 15 players and then having a sub worked out for gameweek2 but with avb saying that malouda-lampard pretty much are in and not saying anything to say drogba-torres-kaloua-benyoun are in. im thinking of leaving a 4 millions and a swapping say a 9-10m forward in for either torres or drogba and say a dunn-taarabt-barton ect tpye play for kalou or benyoun. i know malouda is nailed on and is on corners but has anyone seen him dropping inside and staying very wide and doing everything but make runs in the box.

asked on how his defence played he said that terry was a goal threat at set plays and he is hoping that with maloudas corners that terry will help the attack out in the first games so that says to me malouda is a starter for stoke

He'l stay on pens whether Arteta is playing or not... end of last season saw to that. He's also on free kicks, corners and is constantly whipping in crosses.......he's like a midfielder really. I have Baines, Kompany, Luiz and two 4-4.5 defs and a 4 mil goalie to go with Given...

so just having Baines doesn't mean you have to ignore the rest of your defence. Just mean you need to be shrewd with you cheap purchases.... Holt in the strike force too free up a lot of cash....

I'm liking the looks of Paddy Kenny as a goalkeeping prospect this year, anyone else?

As a Sheffield United fan i was pleasantly surprised when i found out the score he got in fpl in the infamous 06/07 season (Tevez saga etc.) And that behind a defensive line much weaker than that of QPR (barring Jagielka, our defence was poor, and jags was played mainly as a DM).

Also, Warnock knows how to shut up shop and keep a clean sheet better (arguably) than anyone. If anyone needs evidence of that, look at the Arsenal match where Jagielka played almost half of the game in goal, yet we somehow managed to escape without conceding against the likes of RVP.

Also, clinching it for me, he rotates pretty well with Given. 🙂

So yeah, anyone else considering Kenny??

Hi there Cowls, it's always nice to see a fellow Blade. Got a season ticket again this season but I'm not optimistic, though Wilson's not a bad manager....

Just seen Shed Evans is on a rape charge too...

Back to FPL I do often wonder how Jags, Hulse and Kenny got on in That season (Tevezgate still lingers in my mind). I think Warnock learnt a lot from that year and he will keep QPR tight, particularly at Loftus Road and with the early fixtures. If I can afford, it he'd be the best 4.5 to rotate with Given for defs.

What did you make of How to Buy a Club docu, hey?

May not be a bad option given their opening fixtures. Problem is it takes one of your 3 chelsea outfield options..what happens if benayoun comes into the fray etc

The only advantage he has is starts. Ivanovic beats him hands down in every other area. More likely to score and assist.

Thing is that AVB likes his 4-3-3, with the fullbacks bombing down the flanks. Ivanovic isn't the most attacking rightback in the world, and Bosingwa's done rather well in pre-season. So that just leaves a shadow of a doubt whether Bran will play week-in-week-out. Whilst Cole certainly should.

Bosingwa could see good gametime, and at 5.5 could be a steal.

But to be safe, I'd rather pay the extra 0.5 for Cole or Terry (who's also a goal threat from set-pieces). And if Bosingwa's a regular starter, I'd pick him up TOO.

    i'm on the Moses-wagon!

by the way seeing so many teams, RMTs, without any ManUtd cover!? Is it possible to do well in this game without a nani og rooney or therealikes in your squad? they have scored loads of goals preseason and beat barcelona's B-squad. I recon Moses will lign up aside Nani in my squad..

there are more appealing options defensively(pricewise)and the midfield has to much rotation risk until it becomes clear who UTD will start with. Rooney is the best option, yet there are alternatives in RVP and aguero!
