The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

Ach I dunno, Ashley MUST be a Mackem. Sick of Newcastle being the big drama queen of English football. A couple of weeks ago I was feeling, if not optimistic, then fairly ok that the signings of Marveaux, Cabaye, and Ba made up for the loss of Nolan and Carroll.
Beginning to feel fairly pessimistic, don't think we'll go down but don't think we'll do much either.

Nor do I. I suppose its so he has to move quickly, they won't tear up his contract as he'd get a pay off. Barton shouldn't have publicly slagged off his employers (noone else would get away with slagging off their boss in the real world) but the whole thing is a bloody mess.

      Solid team. 7/15

      A few tweaks possible

Ruddy - Can you upgrade to Kenny?
Simpson - Always follow the Golden Rule - No Newcastle defenders!!!

You've got 5 players from promoted teams which is a bit of a gamble and leaves the rest of your team "carrying" a lot. I'd suggest a maximum of one per team to avoid major surgery early in the season.

As a further word of caution you also have three other players who are new to their team/position. These can also be a little risky even if they are reliable fantasy players

Suarez - Good pick but questions on whether will play in opener.

Thanks for your input. 🙂 Ruddy and Simpson are both bench fodder, mate.

Yeah, those 5 players from promoted teams are a bit of a gamble but it's a gamble I have to take or else I can't afford this team.I agree,Moses is going to be tricky.I'm really not expecting anything from him but just have him as a safety measure since everyone else has him.

And yeah,I'm well aware of this Suarez saga.Don't worry,if I get confirmation that he is definitely not starting in GW 1,I'll swap him for Carroll/Bent by downgrading Sinclair to Tiote or a 5.5 mid.Once again, cheers for your ideas. 🙂

I like the mid and understand Lampard must be draining your funds so would assume you dont have much money floating about.

My advice would be to get rid of Jags and try to get someone with a good start to the season (EVE are generally slow starters)
And possibly Warnock to a higher scoring def.

Other than that I like it.

    Given/Ruddy
    Kompany/Hughes/Skrtel/Bardsley/Simpson

    Rooney/Suarez/Holt

I like big martin down back but not sure of Hughes and Bardsley, Bardsley could be rotated and hughes wont be worth the value he has previosuly been as Fulham wont keep as many clean sheets under Jol.

Mids are good aswell and forwards are the same as everyones :p

    Albrighton, Hoolahan, Taarabt, Silva (Sinclair)
    Hoilett, Rooney, Suarez

Evra - Fixtures.... Chelsea/City is a better option

      Nani - rotation risk

Bothroyd & Holt... Although cheap... Unproven and playing for teams that will not create too many chances...

For those interesting in choosing players based on fixtures (and let's be honest, there isn't much else to go on before the season is underway), I've analysed the first 5 HOME fixtures of all teams.

Here's the list in difficulty ascending order (strength ratings based on the FFS Away rating in the Members Area with a tweak to strengthen Villa and weaken Newcastle and Stoke slightly).

It's useful for those managers that pick budget defenders that they can rotate around the home games.

I'd also expect teams to be more attacking at home, so it can help with goals and assists returns too.

What's happening to Maxi too? Done very well under Dalglish but seemingly overlooked for the new boys who haven't exactly set the world alight in Pre-season. Think he should be given more of a shot than Henderson/Downing considering the goals he's contributed towards the end of last season.

Maxi was V hot and cold... 1 minute would get a hat trick the next do nothing...

Personally hes like a Nani, can do something out of nothing and for that reason hes worth a punt in the home games...

I think Liverpool have no idea on their strongest side and have bought MF's for the sake of it... (Henderson, Downing & Adam) when they already have a massive squad....

Yeah, surely should have spent some of that cash on defence (especially since pre-season inconsistency and goal-leakage seems on a par with last season). I think Kenny's not as good a manager, at least in a buying/business sense as may think he is.

Even as a Manchester United fan, I don't agree with the statement:

"Kenny’s not as good a manager, at least in a buying/business sense as may think he is."

I don't think Kenny is doing the buying at Liverpool... Don't they have a director of football that does the recruitment?

Goal leakage a few years ago wasn't a problem.... Whats changed.... Xabi and Javier leaving for pastures new and not being replaced but good enough players..

I'm not looking that far back, 'Pool used to be solid at the back - under Kenny they've regularly been letting in plenty, so surely with an ageing Carragher it's an area he'd be looking at?

Perhaps true he's not in charge of the funds but then if I was the manager I'd expect a fairly hefty say in any purchases - if they weren't my choice they'd be far less likely to get in the team after all.

I think carragher is a good defender when he has a quick partner (Similar to Vidic when he has Rio next to him)

Does Kenny still play the zonal marking that Rafa deployed? If not maybe the defense is getting use to the change?

What I love is henry is letting kk bring his targets in now so the squad can start gelling and building an understanding without insisting on sales first. We are bloated atm but they've already earmarked the surplus and they'll move on soon.

I have a choice of keeping my doubled up city defence - Kompany and Clichy

or going with Baines and a rotated sub

My other starting def is Hughes sub Rangel

Which option is better? Also have no City "cover" if I change the def

Clichy isn't nailed down to start. I'd think Richards is more likely than him to hold a regular starting spot. If you want to double up, I'd go for Kompany and Lescott for GW1, then look to change Lescott to a Chelasea def depending on who starts for chel in GW1?

          ?

You get EA points for goals, Hangeland scored 6 goals which he probably won't do again (going by his history), therefore I was suggesting that his EA score superiority over Hughes last year might have been a bit more than it is likely to be this year.

What's that spreadsheet and John Terry got to do with anything?

I've seen several people advising RMTS to cut out Kieran Gibbs, but i must admit that I see him as a decent pick. I suppose the two problems that could occur would be these, so is either of these the reason that people are advising against him?

    a) Arsenal won't get enough clean sheets to justify his 5.5m starting price.

    b) People think that Wenger might start Armand Traore ahead of him, or maybe move over Thomas Vermaelen to left back.

Other than those, what could be the problem?

Gibbs will start and should be a bargain this year. I don't think 5.5m is unreasonable for an Arsenal defender. Their defence has a bad rep but really only set pieces are their weakness and if Vermaelen is back then that should be less of an issue.
