The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

    Afternoon all.

For those who do H2H leagues (never actually been in one), do you ever find they put you off the big picture, in that you'll be thinking too much of 1 GW and not planning further in advance as you perhaps should?

Also, are there H2H leagues which have several divisions and if so, do new joiners automatically start in the bottom one?

Just looked him up. He has a good record of scoring free kicks (in fact most of his goals are free kicks) so he would be on those. Rooney would still be on pens, i'd imagine.

His record isn't that amazing in Serie A - 7 goals, 7 assists last season in all competitions (4 league goals).

£11+ might be a little risky for me.

Massively tempted to get r Johnson in instead of A Hughes....fixtures marginally worse, but I feel that johnson, as Mccarthy says, can dominate things far more than Hughes.

Also i'd be more tempted to play R Johnson for most games except the really tough away fixtures than i would Hughes.

    Lescott Luiz Hughes Bramble Simpson
    Malouda Taarabt Sinclair Nzog .......
    Rooney Holt .......

My options are Moses and Aguero, or VDV and Rodellega. VDV might be injured, is definitely prone to minor injuries, and has pretty ordinary fixtures to start with. Aguero might need time to settle and isn't guaranteed to start at first.

I know the arguments against Wigan players, but 3 promoted teams in the first 3 fixtures is too good to miss.

Rooney or RVP, I doubt I'll decide til just before GW1, but I'm starting with at least 1 Utd player 😉

    Kompany/Skrtel/Hughes(Simpson/Orr)

    Malouda/VdV/Valencia/Yaya/Moses

    Carroll/Gervinho(Holt)

    Version 2.0 coming soon! 😀

Rookie RMT, any comments would be appreciated.

    Schwarzer (Given)
Ivanovic, Kompany, Enrique (Taylor S) (Briggs)
    N'Zogbia, Downing, Sessegnon, Moses (Dyer)
    Van Persie, Rooney, Zamora

I'm hoping Enrique moves to Liverpool, if he doesn't I'll swap Taylor for Bardsley so I don't have 2 Newcastle defenders

At 10.5 it would be nice if Drogba was nailed on as it would free up cash, but I just cant see it.

    cheers

nice team, not sure about spending so much on Goalkeepers though - I would think its better to just play Given every game and put a 4.0 goalie in instead.

        cheers Mark,

I had 0.5 in the bank, if I change the keepers where would you recommend I spend the 1.5mill?

Do I upgrade one of the 3 cheaper midfielders? Or look at the defenders?

bit light in midfield. Moses, Dyer are both risks...arguably Sess is a slight risk as well.

I think if you are to go for the luxury of both RVP and Rooney then you should consider downgrading Zamora to Holt...another risk, but at least on penalties. That frees up a little to upgrade dyer to maybe Ohara...maybe even duff if you are shedding zamora.

Briggs may not play and agree you could save a bit by swapping Schwarzer for Ruddy or Al habsi.

      Overall good team though.

if you have 1.5 spare and can still afford that strike force I'd upgrade Dyer (I'm tired of slagging this lad's prospects off...but in short they are not good) to O hara or another 6m mid.

yeah you need a big name player in your midfield somewhere. I don't want to suggest getting rid of Downing because I think he will do well but it would be good if you could get a Malouda/VDV/Silva type player in there

          thanks Jonty,

I like the idea of swapping Zamora to Holt, and with the downgraded keeper I may be able to shoe horn a Man City or Chelsea midfielder in there somewhere ...... back to the drawing board ..... lucky there are still 11 days to go!

Hi all, opinions, thoughts much appreciated:

For a maximum of £20.5m (or less preferably) which 2 of the following would you pick to be your big hitting midfielders?

    Lamps 12
    Malouda 10.5
    VDV 10
    Silva 9.5
    Downing 8.5

I am trying to take into consideration fixtures, form, pens/f.kicks etc. Currently have no attacking coverage from any of the 4 teams so which in your opinion are most important to cover?
    Thanks muchly in advance!

I don't really see the point in Given/Kenny

You are gonna play Given in every home game and I believe that he still has a better chance of clean sheets + save points away from home then Kenny would have (unless he is playing somebody like Wigan)

As I suspected... that is an absolutely Danny Dyer bench... you need to have decent '90 minute-men' subs...

Wilkinson and Ferguson will hardly ever play 90 minutes, so if one of your players doesn't play for whatever reason, you'll have nothing on the bench to replace him... you have a fairly strong starting 11, but IMO you have to get a more balanced squad with decent players on the bench...

I'm assuming you plan to play your 3 defenders all the time, in which case you don't have to bother changing your 2 defenders... but I would definitely try to upgrade Ferguson to Moses or someone like that, who will at least be guaranteed to start...

            Suarez Holt Rooney

            Subs: Moreira, Tiote, Simpson, Wilkinson

but due to VdVaart injuries (and Young/Nani/Valencia rotation, don't know how's situation with Kuyt) I must pick someone who guarantee some first team football and I turn to Malouda. Any other ideas?

F*cking brilliant album... John is just way ahead of every other artist out there... no-one comes close to his work... Do you like his stuff?

Tiote still won't cut it... you could maybe consider downgrading Cole to Ivanovic to be able to afford Tiote to Moses for the first 3 games... then switch them back if it doesn't work out... I reckon Moses will be worth a punt...

Swansea had the best home defensive record in the championship last season. At home they kept a clean sheet in 61% of their home games, compared to Norwich's 17% and QPR's 52%.

This makes me think, the only times your likely to play a newly promoted defender is at home, so in theory a swansea defender would be the safest bet.

However this is only useful if we know these defensive qualities 'carry' over into the premier league.

Newcastle had the best home defensive record of the promoted teams last year (when they were in the champsionship) 52% of their home games resulted in a clean sheet, compared to West Brom's 35% and Blackpool's 39%. This trend did carry over in to the premiership, Newcastle had the best home record, 21%, compared to West Brom's 11% and Blackpool's 5%.

I also looked at whether this was the case for the previous year. In the champsionship, the 3 promoted teams were Birmingham, (48% of home clean sheets,) Wolves (39%) and Burnley (48%). Birmingham helped to back up my results, they had the best home defensive record out of the three when they got promoted (42%), compared to Wolves (26%). However, unfortunately Burnley didn't back up the theory they had the worst home record out of the three despite having the joint best the previous year, with just 16%, although this is better than both Blackpool and West Brom last year.

What this proves; I have no idea. Take what you want from it.

great research...I think it shows that Swansea defence is still a big risk, but we will know more after a couple of home games and there is the potential there for some clean sheets at home.

Note to self...monitor Swansea home form in first month and then get one of their cheap defenders in.

Swansea have changed their keeper, BUT I think in Caulker they have a better CB partner for Ashley Williams. So I'd say their defence is potentially slightly weakened from last season and more importantly their defensive record was built on their excellent possession of the ball. They won't have this in the Prem.
