The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

First time back on site now the football break is over and have pulled together my team. Just want to get people's thoughts on Dembele at 5.5? I know he has just returned from injury but given his performance at the start of last season he certainly looks a bargin price and worth a gamble?

        Love this team!

Wish you had Baines in there somewhere.

Love your midfield, maybe you should switch Kalou but he might come good for you.

Love your strikers, gabby might come good this year as well without young.

Any advice on this lot please?

    Given - Kenny
Kompany - Ivanovic - Orr - (Bramble) (Simpson)
    Malouda - Taarabt - Silva (C) - Moses - (Sinclair)
    Rooney - Caroll (V) - Holt

Because I know someone will say Ivanovic is a rotation risk, I don't really see how he is though. Surely he will be starting ahead of Bosingwa and Ferreira, you save .5 from Cole and he is much more a goal threat + offers some assist potential if playing full-back.

Anyway, any comments would be much appreciated.

I had Barton instead of Sinclair until yesterday but that plan's gone down the drain. Don't really see better options around the 6-6.5m mark unfortunately.

That's a fair point, might go with O'Hara actually. Thing is Sinclair has penalties at least if he doesn't do much + plays in a more offensive position. I do see that he's a risk though, thanks for the food for thought.

    Given(Ruddy)
    Luiz-Kompany-Samba(Alcaraz)(Simpson)
    N'Zogbia-Downing-Lampard-Silva(Ferguson)
    Suarez-Gyan-Holt

    Any Comments would be appreciated.

My main worry is that i have put too much cash into the midfield leaving me with poor subs. Another is my frontline and whether Sunderland can provide Gyan with enough opportunities.

Not a big fan of Samba, especially for that price. You could start Alcaraz GW1 and have Distin instead of Samba for GW2.

Also maybe downgrade Lampard to Malouda or Downing (since you have Suarez) for someone cheaper like Taarabt or Sinclair and upgrade Gyan.

Finally, I would say from experience that FPL is a squad game so having someone like Ferguson wastes one of your very precious 15 spots.

Agree with the point about samba - Distin has better run of games after GW1

1 harsh week of suspensions/injuries and your looking at 4 point hits early on!

Very much a squad game - if the bench is cheap make sure they are at a minimum 90 min men!

    Given, Ruddy

    Kompany, Hughes, Huth, O'shea, Simpson

Taarabt, N'Zogbia, Silva, Van der Vaart, O'Hara

I think looking at the fixtures most players here don't have any difficult games early on.

He is of an age where he is still improving. A wonderfully sound passer of the ball. Better positioning than most of his kind. Currently on penalties. An eye for goal, too ... 🙂

Baines - too expensive for me...

      O'Hara - Jarvis surely?

Suarez - might be rested early doors?

Doyle - 6.5m Rodallega has better fixtures imo

    lads!!! : (

Do i do albrighton or nzog -

Abli would allow me to upgrade benyoun or osman to an 8 mil or ugrade simpson in my defence

keeping nzog would leave me with

    given - de vries

    kompany - acole - olsson - simpson - foley

    silva - nzog - osman/benyoun - sess - moses

    bent - roon/rvp - zamora

maybe avb has the balls to try summat new - if not then osman seems my guess as atreta is out - but 7 mil on osman... i just dont know

          N'Zog/VdV/Yaya/Cahill/Taarabt

Slightly concerned I've not got enough up front, and the back 4 relies heavily on potential transfers to the to 5, but pretty content atm... RMT? Cheers!

Been selected and played well. Whether he will start is a bit of a risk. I expect Chelsea's game v Glasgow Rangers later in the week will give us a good idea of AVB's starting 11.

Luiz should get the nod ahead of Alex - also rumours abound that Juve are to bid for Alex, so that might solve your problem!

Well if he's happy for 18m to sit on the bench, then 25m isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

I think he'll start, for what it's worth. Vidic had a dodgy opening season after joining in Jan after all.

    hart de vries

    cole kompany hughes (bardsley,simpson)

    o`hara watson osman taraabt (sessegnon)

    zamora torres RVP(c)

somebody posted recently how well wig, sun, new, rotate so i looked at that and agree but on the other hand do u want a crap wigan defender in ?not for me ,so ive kept hughes and will rotate the 3 defs with cole and kompany and one of them is at home for at least the first 12 weeks ,it also enabled me to do 2 good swops ,gibbs to bardsley and moses to watson ,i was uncomfortable with moses and am happier to fit in the better player watson, but i tell u what those extra 0.5s really take some finding.....

hahaha. Terry 'shit'. I like your sense of humour matey. Why don't you pick up Carragher instead? 🙂

And fwiw, I see the back-four as Ivanovic-Luiz-Terry-Cole.
Don't expect Luiz to feature in GW1 though...I hear Brazil plays just 3 days prior to season kickoff.

ok, first bash of the season.

based on the first 5 or so gameweeks i have:

    Cech - Kenny

    Brown - Alcaraz - Kompany - Orr - Simpson

    Silva - Malouda - Albrighton - Murphy - O'Hara

    Suarez - Bent - Zamora

I think it covers most bases, based on ease of fixtures but without any superstars (worked last year!)

    Care to comment?

So why do people think Ivanovic is a rotation risk? He's had a proper pre-season (something Luiz and Alex have not) and he has almost no competition for a RB spot except from Bosingwa. He's .5 cheaper than Cole, offers much more of a goal threat and, assist-wise, he isn't half bad if he's playing as a full-back.
