King Kenny to talk it over with Suarez before deciding if his main man starts. Dempsey returns to the Fulham fold as Senderos stakes a claim for centre-half. Norwich deny Holt to Leicester stories. Reports claim Torres will start the season on the bench and Arsenal reject a fresh Barcelona bid for Cesc Fabregas just this morning. Here’s today’s Scribbles:

Kenny Dalglish will decide on whether to start Luis Suarez next week after discussions with the player himself. Suarez reports for training in a few days time but, wary of the forward’s exertions in this summer’s Copa America, the Liverpool boss clearly does not want to over extend his star man:

He’ll be back next week some time. We’ll start thinking about him then. We’ll just see with Luis when he comes in. He’s had a fantastic summer. He should be pretty happy with himself and pretty confident looking forward to the start of the season.

We need to be careful with every player. So we’ll see how he is when he comes in and have a discussion with him. We can’t predict how he is going to be like.

Clint Dempsey made his first Fulham start under Martin Jol last night in the club’s Europa League match with RNK Split . Back after playing in the Gold Cup this summer, the American took the place of Matthew Briggs on the left of midfield. Jol also benched Chris Baird, moving Aaron Hughes to right-back and giving Philipe Senderos a chance to partner Brede Hangeland in the heart of defence.

The Hangeland-Hughes partnership central defensive pairing has offered plenty solidity in Fantasy terms over the past couple of seasons, though with Jol just through the “In” door, it’s perhaps too early to read deeply into last night’s XI. If Senderos is offered regular starts under Jol, however, a starting price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will surely tempt more than a few Fantasy managers.

Norwich have moved to deny stories suggesting Grant Holt is on his way to Leicester. Speculation arose yesterday that suggested the forward was set to join the Sven Goran Eriksson revolution but the Canaries have issued a statement saying:

“There is absolutely no truth at all in the stories saying we have accepted a bid for Grant Holt. Our captain is simply not for sale.”

Reports have surfaced this morning concerning Andre Villas-Boas’ first XI thoughts ahead of next weekend’s game at Stoke. Fernando Torres is set to be benched for the match at the Britannia, with Didier Drogba leading the line, flanked by Florent Malouda and, according to the Mirror, Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge is, of course, suspended for the first three games of the upcoming season, so the speculation is probably unfounded.

Darren Fletcher has taken part in his first training session since the end of last season. The midfielder has struggled to shake off the effects of a virus that sidelined him for a few months in 2010/11 and although he won’t be ready for first-team action just yet, his return will be a major boost for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Jonathan Woodgate played the full 90 minutes in Stoke’s Europa League match with Hajduk Split last night. Signed as a free agent after his contract at Spurs ran out, Woodgate comes in at 4.5 in FPL and if (big if, perhaps) he can stay injury-free, Woodgate could be something of a bargain next season, with Robert Huth at 6.0 and Ryan Shawcross at 5.0 in comparison.

Ah, the Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona saga. Reports this morning suggest the Spanish champions have had a new bid rejected by the Gunners. Arsenal are reportedly holding out for £40m and won’t budge on this one. Arsene Wenger will be hoping this deal comes to fruition one way or another soon- the nightmare scenario for Arsenal would be a final-day transfer away from the Emirates for Fabregas, giving the Gunners plenty cash but no time to spend it.

Well, as I've said, that's because everyone gets together and forms solid opinions on who will do what. Then people, who are forming their opinions on what they read here, will see a team and suggest something like "RVP is essential" or "N'zogbia is injured" or "Yaya Toure looks to be a better option than Silva".

So basically, while I agree that people should look around a bit before blurting out the same RMT, you can't be too surprised that the same players we've been bigging up through posts or articles appear in the teams of people who read them.

Cant argue with that Soop tbh. I think it just annoys me when people are throwing promoted players into the midfield alongside nzog. Nzog isnt guarenteed to be as fruitfull as last season - for a variety of reasons!!!

      Agreed.

"_wba" You a West Brom fan?

Currently have got J.Thomas as a punt simply because I think he's a top player and could score well.

I was toying with having Tchoyi instead but you think Gera will limit his playing time?

Hi Wilko - yeah long suffering baggies fan mate.

Thomas will deffo start the season - scored a cracking goal last night and is our main outlet on the counter attack. I do have the feeling Roy doesnt rate him as highly as Di Matteo though. Not a great goal scorer but does have good assist potential. Personally..i would avoid him as he doesnt take corners. Tchoyi is a great wildcard. Excellent goals to mins ratio and is going to play centre forward by all accounts.

I had Tchoyi then opted for Chris Brunt who offers goals, assists and bonus points. I will be transfering him in after GW3. I expect more goals from Brunt this season to go with his assists from last.

Personally bud - i'd hold off on wba till GW3. Gera is suspended for the forst 3 games also.

          Good feedback dude - thanks.

Tchoyi does interest me - but I know Gera can play in the hole and get teh feeling he might be preferred to play off Odem.

Doubt I'll be starting my wba mid just yet but past experience tells me there will be more pressing transfers coem gameweek 3 than worrying about a cheapish mid option!

          Hmmm... food for thought.

    RMT:

    Given, Al Habsi
    Kompany, Hughes, Bardsely, Simpson, Orr
    Malouda, Sinclair, Taarabt, N’Zogbia, Moses
    Drogba, Rooney, Johnson

3M in the bank, plan on bringing in RVP for Drogba after the first few GW’s and possible Suarez for Rooney, so i have at least 1.5M free so maybe improve one of my defense or just keep the money?

I'd spend a bit of that cash you have four big risks in moses, taarabt, sinclair and orr.

A Johnson is bandwagandabidozee. A few pre season goals and suddenly all those seasons of doing nothing are forgotten.

Good idea keeping a bit back and drog as an early punt is a good move. How about using 1.5m to oimprove on orr, moses, johnson..or one of taarabt and sinclair.

I had Johnson from the very start, didn't jump on the bandwagon, may even change him for a striker who will play every week.

Think i will improve on Orr for sure, possibly Johnson(although not many better for his price, Ameobi maybe?) but i will stick with Moses, Tar and Sinclair i think.

Like your strikers and the planned changes. Malouda / Drogba will get points in the first month no doubt.

I'd upgrade Bardsley and downgrade Hughes to Senderos. IMO Woodgate is a steal at 4.5m - Pulis loves him.

Lampard. Here's the thing; there's a good reason he's so expensive: He scores a lot of points (although he did have a dy spell under Ancellotti when he first joined, and moved Lamps further back).

In terms of value, that's one thing. In terms of a captaincy choice, he's awesome.

They are playing 2 centre midfielders in pre season -Mc Each and Lampard with Bennayoun pushed on.

Not one defensive midfielder , but 2 in middle with lamps to the right - Lamps talked about this as did Villas Boas.

Benny has been behind Drogba although i dont see the value in him.

My original teams had Sinclair and Taarabt along with Moses.

Sinclair/Taarabt rotate perfect, but then I realised I was paying 12.5 for this privilege.

I would guess that a perfectly rotated Dyer/(Dyer/Buzazsky) combination may score more than either of those individually all season.

your punts?? no offence Tarrabat was one of the best players to ever grace the champ and Sinclair scored 20 odd goals.

I'd respect it more if you highlighted the potential reasons why they are punts - ie why they will most probably fail.

I have Moses also. Martinez has spoken higly of him. Graham - not feeling this one. Limited technical ability and playing ina team that will leave him iscolated for much of the game i'd imagine.

As much as i don't want them you can't argue with their rotation early on. Just look at this:

      Bol(H), Wig(H), SUN(H), New(H), West Brom(H)

They are a good price and take pens for their team. I wanted to take a punt on Walters but Sinclair and Taarabt makes too much sense. They score well early on and make you some team value.

He was involved in every goal watford scored last season. If he didnt score it, he got the assist. He took pens too so might take that over from Sinclair. Works his socks off every game and surprisingly had great pace too. Fantastic player that can make the step up to the premier league.

He doesnt have to play everygame.

Scholes did very very well at the start of last season, but everyone knew he wouldnt remain for the rest of the season.

Its all about targeting players in different periods.
Drogba and Dzeko are good punts now based on the other strikers at their clubs being out of form or unfit.
Both could easily score well early doors and then you can move them on when needs be.

Just cos you have them in a week 1 team doesnt mean you keep them for the 38.

Malouda and Gibbs are both good options. Gibbs more so later in season when fixtures are better and if Arsenal dont switch Verm there.

Drogba - rotated with Torres, Anelka, Sturrage
Dzeko - Absolute toliet last season... Aguero, Tevez, and Balotelli ahead of him!
Malouda - I have picked him... But still Kalou, Benayoun, and Anelka can all play there!

            1. See above. Playing well, no need to be rotated in week 2 or 3 when you need him
            2. No wrong. Tevez hasnt trained, Aguro hasnt played, Balo played on the wing. Dzeko has started in the first team and scored in preseason. Until Aguero gets going he is a good punt
            3. None of the 3 you mentioned play left side.
            4. Great fixtures after week 4. Arsenal have one of the best defences in the league. I suggest you take a look at the goals conceded and clean sheets from last year.

Malouda isn't much of a rotation risk to be honest. Gibbs is a good buy at 5.5m. Arsenal defence may not be as good as other top 4 teams but he's still a good buy.

I'm trying to stay clear of genuine punts. The only ones I'm considering at the moment are Taarabt and Moses (fixtures and cost respectively).

Would you consider Brunt and Albrighton punts (second season syndrome), Zamora?

Other considerations I'm having to factor is whether Givet and Wilkinson will start.

I'd say Zamora should do pretty well. Injured last season, but we've all seen how good he can be.

As for "punts" I think to a certain extent you need to invest in someone, and it's just a case of picking up quickly which direction the wind is blowing.

If you mess it up (and don't just judge it by the first gameweek), just make a couple of transfers.

The worst thing to get wrong is your team structure. If you "must have" an expensive midfielder and all your money is tied up in a different position, you have to swap out a stiker or something.

The team structure element is quite interesting.

As it stands, I'd probably be a little screwed if Malouda/Lampard/Cesc/VdV turned into a 'must have' since my expensive mids are 8.5 and 8.0.

I do have RvP and Rooney up top, and planning on downgrading to Aguero/Suarez later, so that may free up some value to pick up a mid

i personally find i go for expensive mids as not having the ability to bring in a big hitter who is on form leaves you behind. I find strikers can be rotated game by game and you can find goals in the cheaper ranks by looking at form.

Just my opinion. I have VDV/Malouda and Kuyt in mid. I did this as potentially, Adam, Downing, Nani, Young, Silva could be needed.

Many teams who have Zog as their most expensive mid are risking it imo.

Agreed with the theory - but RvP/Rooney are about the closest I can think of to a sure thing at this stage of the competition.

I'm a big Kuyt fan, but this season his price is prohibitive, and I'm worried about his game time.

Brunt is not a punt. He has about 4 seasons prem experienec and for 6m he always scores well. Club captain and will score more goals this season.

Albrighton is very expensive for 6.5m.

That's why I'm selecting Brunt at the moment. He was off my radar for early fixtures, but I think WBA will score against United at home - so he's back in. Will get Odem in later as well.

Albrighton got 99 points last season behind Young and Downing, with them gone its up to him and N'Zogbia to pick up the slack. I'm beginning to worry about the whole McLeish thing though.

      Do you usually play 3 4 3?

If so is it worth having 5 defenders at 5 mil and above? You could swap out one for a 4 mil starter from a promoted side and use the extra 1 mil somewhere else. Or at least have it in the bank which will offer you a bit more flexibility moving forward.

That being said, i like you team overall, think it bodes well for you in the long term this season. Good luck.

Kuyt - could turn out more worthy than many striker options and scores big with the EA BP system. Liverpool fans - will he play with the new squad? I have a feeling he'll be a bit of a rotation/sub magnet as I can't quite see where he fits with Suarez/Carroll or the midfield bunch. Very tempted to risk him but it's a lot of money (already have Silva)

Arteta injured and won't start the season, no?

Woodgate a risk, but I suppose until he goes down injured...

I have been debating Wilshere, but decided to spend and take Nasri. Not a lot of teams with him in and when/if Cecs leaves he will take on that prime scoring/assisting role in the midfield.

Can't see him leaving Arsenal at this stage and Wenger is too tied up in other deals to make that happen as well.

Nasri - you heard it here first.

Is literally everyone going with Nzogbia...as far as i can see the cons outweigh the pros:
    Pros:
    Proven fantasy football scorer
Likely to be most attacking MF at Villa

    Cons:
    7.5m seems quite high
    Competing w/ D.Bent for goals/bonus
Villa struggled last year and have only lost their best players
McLeish is a fairly defensive minded manager and i think will try and keep things very tight (esp at start of season)

I think i'd prefer to spend an extra mil on Downing...?

      - 7.5m seems quite high? Have you seen the prices this season.
      - Competing w/ D.Bent for goals/bonus? Well yes but he will also be making contributions to Bents goals (the man has been having to set up the likes of Rodallega until now). Also all the points that came from Downing and Young will now be collected by someone in the Villa midfield.
      - Villa struggled last year and have only lost their best players - This is true and slightly worrying.
      - McLeish is a fairly defensive minded manager and i think will try and keep things very tight (esp at start of season)- Also a possibility one must consider.

At 7.5m though I think it is relatively low risk, potentially high reward.

Here are my notes from the end of last season to a few weeks back, a lot of it taken from here:

    GW1-2011/12 season

    Two cheap goalies
Chelsea or Man Utd defender – four cheap ones
    Taraabt – random four midfielders
One of Rooney-RVP-Tevez-Torres, two cheap strikers
    Scott Sinclair
    Hangeland
    Albrighton(?)
    O'hara
    BENT

Leave 6 in the bank to buy whoever emerges as the expensive must have.
    Somen Tchoyi
    Ben Arfa
    Arteta?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Random idea of the day (for me at least):

Start with a Liverpool defender (6.0 maybe?) and transfer to an Arsenal defender (also about 6.0) before GW4.

    Gives a spledid set of fixtures with only GWs 2,7 (and later 10)needing cover, which can be done cheaply with a 4m benchwarmer from Swansea. Gives;

SUN, (WIG), BOL / SWA, bla, BOL, (STK), SUN, STK, (BOL), WBA, nor, FUL, wig and so on……

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Morning FPL fans!

In case you missed it, I’ve done a provisional keeper combo analysis. It’s based on avoiding situations where either keeper is up against MUN, CHE, MCY, ARS, LIV, TOT home or away and EVE or AVL away.

Look at it as suggests for compatible 2nd choice keeper alternatives for keepers from each team.

    ie:
    Keeper 1:Keeper 2/Alternative Keeper 2

    AVL:WBA
    BLA:STK
    BOL:CHE
    EVE:FUL/WIG
    FUL:EVE/QPR/ARS
    NEW:ARS/BOL
    NOR:WOL/CHE
    QPR:FUL/BOL
    STK:BLA/LIV/ARS
    SUN:TOT/CHE
    SWA:MCY/TOT/MUN/ARS
    TOT:SUN/SWA/NEW/QPR/MCY
    WBA:AVL
    WIG:WBA
    WOL:AVL/TOT/SUN

Or if you’re going for a big budget keeper:
    ARS:NEW/FUL/SWA
    CHE:BOL/MCY
    LIV:STK
    MCY:SWA/TOT
    MUN:SWA/WIG

Yeah, they're a good source for potential clean sheets alright, if you don't want to look at the slightly more expensive Villa and Fulham defenders

Well, United play more offensively and had a shedload of injuries on the backline last season. Of course, that doesn't matter FPL-wise and I assume Sunderland will be pretty tight at the back this year.

I'd also expect United to be a bit tighter as well, seeing as they finally have some real defensive cover for the first time in several years (imo).

Dude, the fact we play more offensively is surely irrelevant. We won the league and should be right up there for clean sheets.

It was more praising Sunderland's defence rather than criticising ours

          With all respect: I disagree.

Committing more men forward, fullbacks pressing ahead for crosses, rarely parking the bus > all expose the CBs more to attacks and therefore the risk of goals conceded. In that manner, tactical style of play is surely relevant.

And as I said, I agree with Sunderland's chances for CS this season ... waiting on O'Shea and fixtures, for me.

    Albrighton or Taarabt.

I just can't make my mind up. I already have N'Zogbia in my team so not really sure if I want to double up on Villa although the fixtures through the first few weeks look very tasty. QPR's fixtures are pretty good early in the season but not totally convinced on how he'll adapt to the premiership.

    Any thoughts?

Hoping my team is strong enough to offset the Balotelli risk, and perhaps it will pay off - he has looked sharp pre season.

    What do you think?

    Al-Habsi (Given)
Cole // Kompany // Hughes (Bramble // Simpson)
Silva // Downing // Walters // Moses (Tiote)
    Rooney // Balotelli // Zamora

    2.0m in bank

Hopefully flexible enough for me to make a good GW2 transfer. Something like:

    Balotelli >> Torres/ Drogba
    Downing/ Silva >> Malouda
    Walters >> N'Zog

    Thoughts?

What is the big deal with a player being a rotation risk? You aren't going to have these players all season, it's about having them at the right time.

Ivanovic - He will start at least the first 3 games for Chelsea.

Dzeko - Could easily be the top scoring player after GW1.

Malouda - He will play most games for Chelsea. He'll definitely be involved in their games early on.

I've got both Ivan and Malouda atm. Malouda should play the first 3 weeks and that's all i really need from him and then i'll get rid for VDV or someone.

Ivan is great because he's 0.5 cheaper than Cole, has the goals in his locker, has featured in all pre-season games and can play CB & RB

I agree, im going with Ivanovic over Cole aswell. Are you having Malouda from GW1? Im thinking of having VDV GW1 and then transferring him out for Malouda.

I thought about it, then thought i'd rather not waste the transfer. In theory, Malouda away to Stoke is just as easy/hard as VDV vs Everton. More chance of building value if i have him from the start and he does well.

Injuries may also account for me needing to do a transfer, so would rather just start with Mal.

Interesting point about Ivanovic. I currently have Cole, but changing him to Ivan and Al-Habsi to Ruddy would allow me malouda instead of Silva.

I have Aguero and no other Chelsea attacking coverage.

I also think you can include players from promoted clubs like QPR as they have reasonably decent fixtures at the start of the season. As cheap bench fodder or punts this allows you to also include plenty of bigs names in your starting team, which is hard due to the high prices.

As the season progresses you can downgrade these big names if evenly distributed (def/mid/att) to later bring in players from teams with poorer starting fixtures such as Liverpool and Spurs while at the same time freeing up cash to upgrade the promoted punts.

If you even things out too much at the start you lose this freedom.

Torres: I think AVB's gonna start Torres, judging from pre-season line-ups. Chelsea have such an easy start to the season, almost five pure blue fixtures on the ticker...so I want a Chelsea forward....
