Charles N’Zogbia grabs a goal on his Aston Villa debut. Daniel Sturridge dazzles again for Chelsea and earns the praise of his manager. An ankle knock for Robin Van Persie leaves Fantasy managers awaiting further update. Haris Vuckic forces his way into Alan Pardew’s first-team plans and Andy Carroll grabs another goal for Liverpool as the Reds sign off pre-season in impressive form at Anfield. Here’s your Sunday Scribbles, folks:

As mentioned in last night’s post, Robin Van Persie suffered an ankle knock in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Benfica. The Dutchman was felled in the first half and, having received treatment on the sidelines, returned to the proceedings until the interval. Van Persie then failed to appear for the second half in what may just be a precautionary measure. Post-match, Arsene Wenger was vague on the matter but with Van Persie scoring in his last three outings, can ill-afford to lose his main forward ahead of next weekend’s match at Newcastle.

Charles N’Zogbia made an instant impact for Aston Villa, scoring on his debut away to Braga. Alex McLeish was delighted with the display of the new boy and the team as a whole, as Villa earned a 1-1 draw at the home of difficult opponents. Emile Heskey and Gabby Agbonlahor were the wide players for the away side in what looked more like a 4-3-3, judging by reports.

Marc Alrighton was benched for the game at Braga but came on as a second half substitute for N’Zogbia. The youngster has spoken of his desire to nail down a first-team place this season, following the departures of Stewart Downing and Ashley Young earlier this summer:

It’s up to me to work hard and prove my ability every day and then hopefully the gaffer will pick me. It could be my year. Last season proved to me that I’ve got the ability to compete at this level, and although I had some sticky spells I enjoyed it and am looking forward to more.

The fans were great to me. They love a local boy and that helped me to know they were on my side. This season I’m just hoping I can put in more performances to keep that growing.

Chelsea conceded their first goal under Andre Villas-Boas but recovered to comfortably dispense of Rangers. Villas-Boas again played 4-3-3 with Frank Lampard in his usual slot, left of the midfield three. Daniel Sturridge was, once again, a key player for the Blues, netting twice in an eye-catching performance. Suspended for the first three games of the season, Sturridge will play no part in Chelsea’s league matters this August but is clearly making a case for a first-team place in the subsequent months ahead. Villas-Boas praised the player post-match:

Daniel has played his part in pre-season. It is nothing new to us because of what he was doing at Bolton. He has been showing his qualities in the club and we will count on him for this season in a different perspective than before.

Alex partnered John Terry in central defence yesterday, with David Luiz sitting out due to knee pain. Villas-Boas spoke of this after the 3-1 win:

David Luiz should get back to training soon. He got back [from playing for Brazil in the Copa America] and in the first training session he felt a slight pain in his knee. It’s something he didn’t feel in the Copa America and it’s not the reason why he didn’t play. That was just the manager’s decision. But he’s only had half-an-hour training with us, although he should get back this week to full training.

Chelsea have stepped up their player acquisitions this weekend, agreeing a deal with Anderlecht for the services of Romelu Lukaka. The transfer will go through later this week, subject to a medical and the player agreeing personal terms.

Glen Johnson limped out of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Valencia after only six minutes yesterday. The right-back appears to have a thigh injury and speaking after the game, Kenny Dalglish reckons the club should have a better idea as to the extent of the injury later on today. Fabio Aurelio returned to the Liverpool first-team at left-back and staked a claim for a regular slot with a solid performance. With a move for Jose Enrique mooted, will Auerelio’s comeback persuade Dalglish to keep the chequebook in his pocket rather than splash the cash?

Liverpool played a 4-2-3-1 formation and despite a number of substitutions, kept the same shape throughout the game. This may well prove to be the club’s default formation next season, with the possibility of Luis Suarez tucked in behind Andy Carroll. The ex-Newcastle forward is starting to find his feet at Anfield, scoring for the second game on the trot yesterday ahead of next week’s home opener with Sunderland.

The pre-season form of Haris Vuckic saw him installed in the Newcastle first XI for yesterday’s game with Fiorentina. The Slovenian had scored in the previous two games and although the game was subsequently abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch, looks to be firmly in Alan Pardew’s thoughts ahead of next week’s St James’ Park showdown with Arsenal.

Wayne Hennessey looks like entering the season as Wolves’ number one. The keeper played 80 minutes of yesterday’s win over Real Zaragoza and with another strong performance under his belt, seems like keeping new boy Dorus De Vries on the bench at the campaign begins.

Wayne Routledge made his debut for Swansea yesterday in the 1-0 win over Real Betis. Swans boss Brendan Rodgers introduced the ex-Newcastle man to the proceedings as the furthest forward in a central midfield three, suggesting Routledge may offers options in areas other than the wings at the Liberty Stadium.

      Those two are fools gold.

They are symbiotically in the same one-dimensional boat together. I wouldn't say they looked sharp at all. Outside of the horrid back-pass that put him on, and a couple of headers into play with no one on the end of them...they both looked mediocre.

+1 loving the look of Gervinho, has fitted in really nicely in highlights of Arsenal friendlies I've seen, although if Nasri, Fabregas and RVP aren't playing in the Newcastle game I don't see Arsenal doing too well... having said that the Toon will be wank this season (kill me now Atilla...)

Simpson part of the newcastle/sunderland rotation, and looking at fixtures, QPR have fair ones the weeks when both newcastle and sunderland have bad ones, like GW1!!!

those two will only be used once every 3 ganeweeks as the 3rd defender if all goes well.

FYI I think Gervinho and RVP could both play together and this would still be a prudent play. Gervinho is essentially a midfielder. You're treating the situation as if they have the same position. It would probably be a smarter play than going with RVP and ANY other midfielder.

    I have an idea....

When you want a RMT please also state your finishing position from last season. For example for me it would be...

    Please RMT 74,000 (ish)

Given I was pretty average last season you might want to ignore my team, whereas if I was a top 10k player then you might want to take note.

I reckon most RMTs at the moment are from dullards who finsihed in place 1,254,763 or below.

    Good idea?

I've seen far too many cheap rotation risk defenders in RMTs.

I think the best defensive line to have is two expensive ones from top teams (Kompany and A. Cole for me) then 3 cheapish ones that rotate well (I've got Wes Brown, Simpson and Steinsson). I've actually ended up spending very little on defence and won't be changing it much for the whole season, saving transfers for strikers and wingers who go out of form.

To many ifs in that team - Gibbs seems good val but Arsenal have tough fixtures to start, clean sheets not looking likely. Too many risk players - Malouda has chance of not starting. Sinclair/Ohara/Taarabt risky. RVP possibly injured, Bent/Rodallega ok nice sched, but certainly not captain material. In General, what I dont like about your team is solid captain choices. You have RVP and that is it! If he is injured, nobody to captain as of now, other than Malouda hoping he plays 60 minutes or more. Just too risky to start. Captain Choice wins leagues!

I thought I sorted it - changed again after todays games. City look weak in defensive third - hence no Kompany. Plus everyones got him

    What are your thoughts here?

    Given - (Al Habsi)

Hughes - Ivanovic - Enrique -(Brown - Simpson)
    Malouda - Hoolahan - Moses - Downing - (Taraabt)
    Carrol - RVP - Zamora

I thought I sorted it - changed again after todays games. City look weak in defensive third - hence no Kompany. Plus everyones got him

Theres potentially loads of points in the middle. Set pieces galore. Should be clean sheets aplenty too IMO

My theory based on new BP system is that the Defenders are going to struggle with BP's this year, so I'm going to go el-cheapo with my defence to start off.

Securing higher chance BP's and goals / assists with the likes of Nani, Malouda, Yaya Toure, Carroll, Bent & Drogba all featuring.

To add cover to my defence it's as simple as trading out one premium FWD or MID for a proven cheap FWD/MID and upgrading to a regular proven DEF... 4pt hit is worth the punt.

    Thoughts?

    Hi All!

I need advise in regards to my first XI:

    Cech
    Terry, Alex, Riise
    Malouda, Dempsey, N'Zozgbia, Nani
    Zamora, Bent, Di Santo

I've built it based on the GW1-GW4.
Fulham and Villa seems to have a pretty easy rivals (no teams from the top 6). Wigan play all three newcomers so DiSanto included. Nani's shown today how's prepared to the new season.
    Any comments?

Is is forbidden to have 4? (sorry if this questions seems to be stupid - I'm a rookie on this website)

If you're playing FPL you can't do it...

However, if you're playing a different fantasy comp it may be possible? This site is based on FPL.

Don't waste your wildcard so early dude, i forsee you needing to use it after GW4...

I did something similar last year and it screwed me big time.

Balance your side out, so you only need to do about a trade a week to match fixtures.

2x Villa and 3x Fulham is really pushing it.
      4x Chelsea is a dream...

        So...
You suggest if I will leave 3 Fulham players than when the harder games come I will not be able to exchange them all for other as there are 2 subs only available per week?

I do like Riise in the back there! His style might even fit into the EA bonuspoints-system if they let him fly down the flank.
          Expensive though..

          nah mate,
you're clearly not playing FPL, so it's different theories, in FPL you're allowed one free trade per week, any other trades cost 4pts.

hmm. I had to remember it wrong from last season.
Indeed one is allowed. I think I remembered 2 as 1 was carried over from previous week 🙂 sorry for mistake - I'm back on good way now. Thanks anyway

Guys here's my tweaked team got 1.0 mil left in the bank, do I need to spend it or shall I save it for later upgrades?

R johnson ur probably thinking wtf, I'm thinking of rotating him with hughes and seeing as he's now confirmed captain for wolves, even if they do let a few in i'm pretty sure he'll make up with attacking points.

    Al-Habsi (Ruddy)

    Kompany Cashley Johnson (Hughes Simpson)

    Nzogbia Nani Silva Moses (Sessagnon)

    Zamora Holt RVP

I'm quite content with it and am willing to take two punts with holt and moses...shall I upgrade/downgrade anywhere?
