A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Replace Collins oshea with 4.0 def. VDV and Odem keep checking injury status.

With such an expensive defense, you have no Arsenal, ManU or Chelsea- so you will be making some changes as the season goes. Also, I wouldn't have more than two from ManC on defense and most say two is one too many from any one team, but ManC might work for the first two or three games.

Having Holt Sinclair and Taarabt is really tempting. All decent fixtures and every goal their team gets will be turlough them, not to mention 3 penalty takers.

    Given/Kenny
    Kompany/Agger/Hughes/Bramble/S Taylor
    Young/Downing/Benayoun/Taarabt/Moses
    Carroll/Bent/Holt

    £2m in the bank

Agger will be changed to Enrique if he signs for Liverpool or switched to Kelly if he gets injured.

Not interested in Man City attacking coverage for week 1 as it's too unpredictable, Silva doesn't score enough goals to warrant his price tag and I don't think Swansea will do that badly.

Carroll might be switched to RVP if he's going to be 100% fit.

GW2 transfer will be Carroll out for a Chelsea striker and then no transfer in GW3 before RVP is in for GW4 and probably Yaya for Downing.

Yeah, level playing field is the only way to go I guess, anything else would be a hollow victory. Not that I know much about victory having been slaughtered the last 2 years!

Well let's start with the good news... 3 years ago 23k. Last 2 years way down with the dross due to extenuating circumstances (went on a round the world trip in October last year, handing management of my team to a 'friend' who used it as a laboratory for freaky experiments) Hope to be back in the game this year

should start to knock his ownership down. i was hoping such high ownership and a non start GW1 would lead to a potential double price drop, but his ownership may be cut in half now by the deadline. Even owners who give up after one week wont want any colored "i" boxes to start. i just hope KD gives some definitive info re suarez

My team is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. It's Kuyt and Luke Chadwick's lovechild. Think I'll be punished for not being home enough this summer. Will have to study FPL full time this week - booh.

Hmm must admit Nani is tempting but on closer inspection he mightn't be the best option.

Last season he was excellent at OT but his away points hauls were nothing to brag about.
    At a glance of United's opening 6:
wba, TOT, ARS, bol, CHE, stk

Apart from Arsenal who he's got a pretty good record against I wouldn't fancy his Home points potential at all.
WBA should be an easy enough match but it's tough to say how Bolton will perform and then the trip to the Britannia is never easy.

Think I just wait for a better time to invest in him

What do people think of Gyan?

Sunderland have a relatively easy start as Liverpool are terrible in defence and Reina may not be starting GW1.

I think he could be good.

      1. Reina will most likely start GW1
      2. Liverpool have had a depleted defence for most of pre season and kept a clean sheet vs. valencia

      3. Regardless of the above to i rate gyan anyway... could be a revelation this season without bent there

Assou-Ekotto, Carragher, Kompany, (bardsley, De Laet)

    Seesegnon, Silva, N'zogbia, Moses, (walters)

    Goodwillie, Rooney, Carroll

    1.5m in the bank,,,,

i have plans but thinking past GW1 is giving me a headache!

      Ditch assou-ekotto and carragher imo
Tottenham conced too many goals and you are better off going with say a villa defender as mcleish is defence crazy... but then ud be doubling up
Midfield as you said is good for W! but cant see many points coming soon after that. Good strikers although rooney did play quite deep against city... u just wonder whther he is worth 12.0 when u can get a 10.5 and lower and upgrade walters or use it on your defence.

good advice,, thinking might try n get a chelsea defender in so some shuffling might be going on,
just that way any game you watch throws up new prospects.

Nani looked back to his early season from from last year. When he plays like that he's undroppable. Wouldn't be surprised if Young played centrally behing Rooney with Nani and Valencia on the wings at some point this season.

Straight swap for VDV then, as well as a few other alterations gives me a team I'm very happy with.

    S.Taylor, Lescott, Cashley, Bramble, Gabbidon

Ye, if he's declared unfit I might get Bent in but otherwise he's staying. He's by far my most must have player this season.

I get the feeling he'll pull a Drogba of last year on us though.
