A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Dalgleish thinking about it. Depends how much he trains with the team this week, which will be hard due to internationals.
I think he will play as he will not play midweek unlike most of the team.

    I can't resist a Martin Petrov bandwagon. 😕

Is there even one though? Sounds promising from what I've just read in the pre-season guide.

Also, Aguero - talk to me. I want to captain a City forward in the first week.... Dzeko, Aguero or Balotelli?!

Yeah, I might go with Silva instead. It's either Silva (then Malouda), or Aguero/Dzeko/Balotelli (then Drogba/Torres). The first option seems safer, although the second has the potential to score very well.

yah i may upgrade aguero to RVP or Rooney come closer to the gameweek.

and rod plays for wigan.... yeah? the first three fixtures for wigan, rod has to score at least?

Keep Sessegnon and have 1m spare or use that 1m and upgrade to N'Zogbia and have this midfield:

    Nani, Silva, N'Zogbia, Taarabt, Moses

Can't decide between Sess and cash or N'Zogbia.

You need to improve your chances of scoring .You should maybe look for players with more than one string to thre bow.

Your defenders just defend , very little goalscoring ,assist threat
Your midfielders are not 'mostly' on pens , free kicks etc..
Neither is Carroll & with Drogba you get the playing time issue.

Your tactics may well be better ......but ,well you did ask

cheers for the detailed tips mate,

        valid point about the defence,

i feel yaya, malouda and downing offer scoring & assist potentials, who would you recommend instead and why?

drogba, yes a possible rotation risk, but he's a safe bet to start off the season well and easy to downgrade...

Rodallega you pretty much know what you're getting. Moses is more the unknown quantity, as he is now playing in a post-N'Zogbia team. So Moses more of a gamble, but bigger potential payout.

When Valencia is back 100%, Park too and Welbeck can also operate on the wings. It's a minefield. No doubting that Nani is our best winger atm though.

Hmmm strong midfield versus mighty strikers..... tough one.
I can have one side with Malouda, Silva in the middle (with two 6's, and one 5) and Rooney, RVP and A.Johnson up front.

Alternatively I can have a side with three big guns up front and a correspondingly weak midfield with Zogs as my strongest mid. Defence stronger by 1m in this version so not much difference at the back.

Most of my teams have revolved around the Malouda/Silva in the middle with 2 big hitters up front and a cheapie. I'm just not sure about RVP and wondering whether to go Caroll, Bent and Gyan/A.Johnson/Campbell up front and go for a much stronger midfield.

I just think the forwards are going to be where the points are this season. No real basis for that, just a Beardsley-esque hunch.

Hey Attila. Thing is, your first scenario, you've got two big guns already, and two top mids. So really your choice is between upgrading AJ and downgrading a mid, or not?

I started off planning on having three big forwards, but I've gone down the fixtures route. But nothing wrong with the principle. I don't fully agree with the 'balance' argument of spreading money around. They're still just one of your front seven.

Just had a play with that. With your Rooney and RVP up front, you just need Silva and Malouda and you're there. Maybe less comfortable putting the armband on Malouda but that may change as the team settles down. Hmmmmmm......

      I'd get Bramble over O'Shea and I wouldn't have Sinclair + Taarabt.

Is it wise to make a team based on GW 1 fixtures and then use wildcard? Thinking of hitting big in Gw1 and then using wildcard. Any comments on this strategy?

Doesn't seem like a great idea. I'm all for using it early but you probably won't be much clearer after GW1 of who to get.

Also, none of the big teams except City have a great fixture GW1, and who are you going to triple up from on there?

Did it last year and it worked amazingly....only slight downside was that I bought in one or two players that looked like they would be regualrs but weren't..Perch and Van Damme but apart from that, it worked really well..

Not for one week. Its quite to make a big hitting team for the first three weeks so do that instead....

Keep that non-transfer window wildcard for when your team is injury-ridden or playing shite, or both 🙂 I'm hoping to keep mine beyond gw3 this season!

Defence looks a little light - Enrique would appeal more at Liverpool.

Can see quite a few going top-heavy with the forwards this season. RVP and Suarez both have some doubts over their participation next week though.

Graham, Campbell, Holt all have sound credentials as cheapie third strikers to free up the cash for elsewhere.

Anyone think Lescott could be a differential to Kompany, with extra goal threat or not worth it as Toure will take his place in September?

I like Lescott but may keep Kompany as its hard to squeeze in that extra £0.5m without weakening team somewhere else.

In my case I'd have to lose Moses for a £4,5m mid to get him in. Mind you, I have RVP and Rooney up front so if Van Porcelain is confirmed out before Saturday.......

Opinions on Agger this season, Liverpool looked decent against Valencia, and he's scored a couple pre season too.

Is it the shaky nature of the defense as a whole that's putting people off?

Have to say that Agger makes plenty of appeal, but you'd think it's him or Skrtel as centre-half partner for Carragher. Skrtel is an injury doubt for the Sunderland game so Agger should play. It could be a great opportunity for him to cement his place.

It'll be interesting to see if Kenny rotates Carragher a little this season to give the Agger/Skrtel partnership more of an airing.

On it's day we are looking at: Johnson/Carragher/Skrtel or Agger/Aurelio or Kelly...

        Thanks for this,

I'm still struggling to wrap my head round the rotation risks of teams like Liverpool and City.

Probably best to steer clear, but part of me thinks it's a risk worth taking
