The second instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees defenders come under the microscope. Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve taken a larger sample size than the previous Goalkeepers article and analysed the top twelve in terms of points per game in 2010/11.

Although there are four Chelsea players here -in addition to two from Man City – the Blues defenders most definitely vary in average returns and consistency. Who’d have thought, after all, that Ashley Cole was the least reliable Fantasy pick of our featured quartet last season?

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Anyone that was in SledgeHammer H2H 1 last year and was not in the bottom 7 (and resultantly now being in Sledgehammer H2H 2) would have recieved an e-mail with the league code for it next season. If anyone else is interested in joining my leagues, then there will be spaces available in Leagues 1 2 and 3, and many places in H2H 4, so drop me an e-mail with the subject "Sledgehammer H2H 4". And going by rank, you will be placed in your appropiate league, so you will also need to send me a link to your team history page.

Is the Shield the only reason people are getting Nani? Seems like a whole lot to risk, to me. People seem to be destroying some very legitimate front lines to get him. Rooney and RVP both disappearing.

The Shield convinced me because it revealed how ManUtd intend to play (a hybrid fluid attacking system similar to Barca) which would mean they are less boxy and therefore, Nani won't be inhibited.

Before, the big problem with Nani was that he was dependent on playing on the right. When he played on the left, he was restricted, and ineffective. The worry, was that Valencia would take the RW slot, and Nani would be shunted out left and would be useless. However, with United's new system where Rooney, Welbeck, Young and Nani could all change positions as attacking moves develop, Nani becomes United's best attacking option because he showed last season he has immense potential and with freedom to roam where he likes, he's not limited out on the left.

Never doubted his potential, just the ability to realize it, and after watching the Shield, he'll be deadlier than ever with this new United system.

Nothing against Rooney, but I agree with Duffman below in that goals will likely be evenly spread. If anything, Hernandez will be the big goalscorer in the team once he returns. Rooney is a great player, but he is no Van Persie or Tevez who dominate an entire team by channeling all attacks through one outlet. Those guys are worth 12.0 because they lead all attacks the team puts together.

Only problem is that Valencia is still a threat to Nani's starting role but if he starts strong it'll be difficult for Fergie to drop him.
Also the charity shield showed me Rooney is not worth 12 million as it looks like the goals will be spread evenly amonngst the front 4.

Zog has a lot going for him. He's more direct than Silva is, takes a mean freekick and is greedy enough to shoot. But the fact he's playing for a new team worries me. He might not bed in right away, and the fact he's owned by so many people could see his value tank.

You make good points. Considering fixtures and short term choice, it'd be Bent and Silva anyday, but longer term, N'Zogbia and Van Persie will likely score more points cumulatively.

I agree on long term for sure. I doubt I'll have Silva come week 9 or so....but right now, I think City attacking coverage is a huge priority, and In my opinion, that means Silva. Silva bossed his side in the Shield, too. 😉

Are his fixtures even that good after GW 1?

Two away games, one at Tottenham after the first one. Wigan at home GW 4 is nice, but by then, Aguero should be starting, and he'll be the attacker to get.

I think Spurs defense is still pretty cack. Even if Aguero begins to start, I'm not sure I STILL don't want Silva. I think he is going to be very active, offensively, and I expect a lot more goals from direct free kicks once Tevez leaves.

Camzy, last season were you picking safe options like Silva and bent or explosive players like RVP.
I would've thought with your rank you would have been bringing in high scoring captain choices rather than steady reliable players.

It was the year of the mid price midfielders. Nasri, Van Der Vaart, Nani. In a sense, I was getting the steady reliable players, although I did have Berbatov when it mattered.

So no, actually, I feel I played a little too safe last year if anything.

That is the toughest call I have seen posted here in some time.

Bent gets goals nothing else. NZog will get assist and a few goals but how will he "fit in" at AVL?

If RVP fit it HAS to be RVP and Nzog, if not fit the Silva Bent options increases it's appeal imo.

I just looked at FPL and saw that Suarez is listed as doubtful.
Is that just because of rest or is he injured?
Should i keep him in my team?

if you click he actual thing it says because of 'fatigue' so yes... it is due to the fact he is resting. I'm inclined to think he will play against Sunderland but wont start.

I have a different fantasy team on a different site and if i used the prices from FPL my team would cost 110.5!! my team isn't even that great.

Anybody that was in any of the Sledgehammer H2H leagues last season, now has their e-mail with the league code for the new season, and also which league you are now in. If you were not in one of the leagues drop me an e-mail

    gregchesterton@ymail.com

And I will add you to one of the leagues according to rank, thank you and goodnight.

    Al Habsi (Foster)
    Kompany, Aurelio, Alcarez (Orr, Briggs)
    Silva, Downing, Taarabat, NZog, Moses
    RVP or Rooney, Bent (Holt)
