The second instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees defenders come under the microscope. Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve taken a larger sample size than the previous Goalkeepers article and analysed the top twelve in terms of points per game in 2010/11.

Although there are four Chelsea players here -in addition to two from Man City – the Blues defenders most definitely vary in average returns and consistency. Who’d have thought, after all, that Ashley Cole was the least reliable Fantasy pick of our featured quartet last season?

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Is it heavy to go on 3 chelsea players ?
    A.cole malouda drogba

About man city who you think the strikers would be ?
    Tevez is out.
So dzeko and Aguero i don't think balotelli will play.
So taking punt on dzeko will it work ?

John Terry and Ashley Cole are confirmed.
      It will be between Alex/Ivanovic/Bosingwa/Luiz.

Danny graham - "With the likes of Scotty (Sinclair), Nathan (Dyer), (Stephen) Dobbie and (Leroy) Lita, we are going to create chances. It's up to the striker to put them away."
This seems to suggest Lita isn't competing with graham for the striker spot. Will he play out wide? Or in dobbie's spot?
Dobbie's looking like too much of a gamble 🙁

I saw someone on here suggesting that Dobbie might be preferred for home games, but dropped for away fixtures, or tougher home games. Can't remember who it was but I think they were a Swans fan, and they described Dobbie as a "luxury player"... put me off anyway.

        It was me jonny 😀
Thing is you'd only want to play him for the home games, and when starting at home he's the main creator & a very good finisher. He was lined up as my one starting gamble this season but routledge signing and now this quote about Lita has me worried.

Haha brilliant. I suppose it could only have been a limited number of people who are on here in the "Aussie slot"... one thing I'll say is that neither Routledge or Lita could do the same role as Dobbie does when he plays for them.

Might be a wait and see situation though... you wouldn't want him vs City anyway, and if he plays in that game you know he's pretty much nailed on.

Appreciate any advice/comments on my team (gotta win works league this year):
    Given (Ruddy)
    A Cole - Kompany - Hughes (Orr - Simpson)
Nani - Moses - Sessegnon - Silva (Sinclair)
    Rooney (c) - Bent (vc) - Holt
    >Not sure on Silva, expensive and may not bring in the points. Thinking of Taarabt to open up a load of £s
    >Will Orr play?

    Kompany a.cole figueroa (simpson gabiddon)

    Silva nani nzogbia taraabt moses

    Anelka carrol (dj cambell)

    1) A.cole takes a lot of money should I replace him with bosingwa or alex?

    2) Should I start dj and drop moses or taraabt?

          I realise that, Jonny.

I just lost over $200,000 on the stock market today so may not be in the best of moods, but surely you agree that after rating over 100 teams then there's a limit to anyone's tolerance.

And you missed my second sentence re Moses:

So although the first sentence "Make your own mind up" preceded that, then the second sentence was actually advice.

He was excellent in the Championship before he signed for Wigan, was very much one for the future if there is such a thing at a club which is generally seen as a "stepping stone" club. With the departure of Charlie N'Z, he is now in the limelight, he is quick, can cross (from what I have seen) and is more or less a shoe-in to replace the creativity Wigan have lost.

      I hope.

He's a player that's shown abiity in the past, albeit in the Championship. Since going to the prem he's been quite unlucky with injury and never really gotten a prolonged run in the team as a result. He's shown good preseason form though, and will presumably get a greater license for creativity since Wigan don't really have anyone else left.
I actually started with him last season. Big mistake. He got injured after about 50 minutes into the first match of the season and then went byebye from my team.

No question that he's a runaway bandwagon on here but he does have talent, somewhere. He'll likely be the type of player to only see around 70 minutes per game but hopefully gets a the odd assist when he does figure.

Interesting, some nice punts in there- Osman is someone I'm looking at myself. Your bench fodder could be better- Ihad to google McAuley, will he even play? Buzsaky probably not a nailed on starter either... I'd also consider Hughes instead of Riise if you want a Fulham defender, then you can have Cole instead of Luiz.

I wasn't impressed at all by De Gea in the CS.

It's up to you whether you think he will improve, but Man U's first few fixtures are tough, so I'd wait and see for the first 5 gameweeks before sticking him into my team.

No-one knows. They'll probably both start imo. Bramble is a favorite of Bruce's.
A few weeks ago Bruce seemed to suggest that when fit bramble & turner could be the cb pairing with oshea & brown at fullback. It was a bit if a vague statement though mainly highlighting the flexibility of oshea & brown.
Of the two I'd feel a bit more confident on bramble starting as he was their best defender last season.

I'd be inclined to agree. When everyone's fit I see it as being:

        Bardsley, Bramble, Turner, O'Shea

O'Shea being injured means Brown would probably start the season at RB.
I personally think Bramble's place should be safe regardless. Bruce had him at Wigan and signed him for Sund. He was also probably their best defender last season, apart from Onuoha so I can't see him getting dropped.

That, and I think the Tin Man (Brown) is quite rubbish. 🙂

If you're after someone for a short-term gamble, perhaps to replace with Suarez when he's a guaranteed starter, one person who I don't think I've seen anyone mention at all is Anelka. Sturridge is out until the 27th August, you're probably looking at Malouda and Anelka either side of Drogba/Torres for the first couple of games... just throwing it out there.

Figueroa always has promise and then never does anything, the base to your team is good. Anelka probably wont play. They've also signed Lukaku which gives him even less chance of playing. If you definitely want to put Suarez in you could may be go for somebody like Gervinho or Rodallega, looking at GW1 and then upgrade once he's fit.

You have five players from newly promoted sides: (Ruddy, Gabbidon, Taarabt, Sinclair and Holt).

It's a very big punt. So big it resembles one of those Viking ships.

There are better and more experienced proven (to an extent) players for around the same price, so I'd shuffle those players around a bit and leave yourself with one or two players from newly promoted sides, tops.

Bent, the focal point of his team and solid for 20+ goals a season. Plus a good penalty taker.

All the others will at some point have champions league distractions (e.g. United), competition for places (e.g. Torres/Drogba) or get injured (e.g. RVP).

It depends who I'd got in midfield and whether I had to have them all season.

Looking for a 4.5 benchwarmer and Ephraim looks very good, but does anyone know how regular he's likely to start. Surely there must be a QPR fan on here...

"Hogan Ephraim (19 starts, 9 sub apps, 3 goals, 1 assist) The former West Ham winger lost his place to loanee Wayne Routledge, suggesting that he will likely be a squad player next season. Routledge’s refusal of a three-year deal at Rangers could yet hand Ephraim opportunities if Warnock fails to recruit in this area"

Look how many midfield injuries there are already. Add International friendlies and champs and Europa. You need someone good

Andrew Surman for norwich, scored 3wide goals pre season and plays out as a winger, so should be good for some assists. Worth the punt
