The second instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees defenders come under the microscope. Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve taken a larger sample size than the previous Goalkeepers article and analysed the top twelve in terms of points per game in 2010/11.

Although there are four Chelsea players here -in addition to two from Man City – the Blues defenders most definitely vary in average returns and consistency. Who’d have thought, after all, that Ashley Cole was the least reliable Fantasy pick of our featured quartet last season?

i think/hope most have learnt to ignore the BNP already.
i hope you didn't misinterpret my comment on the other page. i was saying the pictures speak for themselves for those who think it's what's on the face that matters as opposed to what's in the mind

Yeah I got what you meant there, don't worry!

I'd like to think most people ignore the likes of the BNP, but he tweeted earlier that he had 700 new followers in the space of 5 hours (I'm not one of them!) and was asking signed up members to log off the site because it was struggling with all the traffic. Worrying.

When people realise that the Turkish quarter was most vociferous in fighting against the rioters tonight then Griffin will lose all credibility anyway:

Hmmm, you mean it could be read as if that's a quote from Nick Griffin? Perhaps a comma would be better? I just had serious doubt over how you spell comma then too, might need to go back to school.

lol yeah there's just a small chance it can be read as if Griffin is saying something sensible. maybe i'm splitting hairs, but the possibility is there. interesting question as to whether a comma solves the ambiguity. i think it does.

      regrettably yes.
i was pondering this earlier. you would hope mancini would make tevez train away from the squad on his own or with the youth team as punishment for his lack of commitment to the club. the only reason i can see for him not doing that is it sends out the message that they want to get rid at all costs and that could drive his price down/harm man city's bargaining ability

luiz hasn't been training for a while and it's not certain he's a solid pick anyway

hughes + jagielka a bit like your keepers i.e. expensive to rotate

The only thing I can criticize really is the choice of tactic. I think theres a lot of value in cheap defenders which you havent exploited. Nothing wrong with the player selection though, I think youve chosen more or less the best available for each price.

Camzy said earlier that N'Zog's high percentage ownership might cause him to plummet (if he doesn't do well early on). But I thought the opposite is the case. It's those with low percentage ownership that can see drops as a result of a few jumping ship. High ownership means LOTS of people have to get rid for there to be a price drop.

    Is this right?

"High ownership means LOTS of people have to get rid for there to be a price drop."

This is correct, but you underestimate the power of the masses at the beginning of the season. Drogba was the most highly picked player and he still rocketed in price because of his form.

it's about 10% either way Garth...expensive players who don't perform will likely fall quicker than cheaper ones because people expect less from cheaper guys and care more about expensive ones...even so I don't think this matters much (or at all)

yeah that's a good point. and backs up camzy's initial hunch.

well you're going to pick some expensive guys and some cheapies...anyone who does badly will need to be sold but we don't know who will actually score points and who won't (obviously) so I don't follow how worrying about future price drops could possibly affect who you pick

basically you need to explain to me why you're worrying about this

Price predictions are over rated. Pick the players you think will score the most points, then trade in ones you think will score more (late in the week when you have all the info) simple 🙂

here's a ponderer. simpson for 4mil or s.taylor for 4.5mil? i'd argue taylor is as big a goal threat as any defender in the league and possibly like the lescott v komapny arguement cropping up a bit more lately worth the extra 0.5. the issue would be as a 4th/5th defender he would have to be in your side the weeks he scores to be worth the extra 0.5

I think he will be a regular and I was considering getting him over Simpson too but didn't.

My reasoning is Lescott is worth the extra .5 over Kompany because you'll play him pretty much every week barring Chelsea & United away so you'll always have the extra money in your starting XI.
Whereas with Simpson/Taylor he'll always be on the periphery and you'll be fortunate to have him playing if and when he scores.

People might disagree but with the new bonus system it might be Lucas, granted he doesn't score many goals but he's always got a high tackle percentage, decent change of an extra point for a clean sheet and he plays every week.

A 5.0 midfielder will be coming off your bench right?

Yea they'd be off the bench probably, midfields currently looking like
        Vdv/Nani, Silva, Albrighton, Hoolahan. Moses.
Thinking I might knock .5 off Hoolahan to upgrade elsewhere.

You really think Lucas will play, given the £20mil signing of Henderson?

Yea, he's our main defensive midfielder and our player of the year last season. He's nailed on in my opinion, Henderson will be used in rotation and I think he'll feature quite a bit on the right. time will tell though.

very little choice. gomez looks set to start the season for wigan, d.jones @4.5 is frustratingly not quite in the wigan side yet (if mccarthy's injury is bad he could be).
obertan could emerge as a 5.0 option now he looks like a newcastle player

I've been touting him. Routledge playing his position the other day is a worry though.
I was thinking he'd be benched v city so would be well and truly under the radar before starting the home games gw2/3. Now this routledge curveball 😕

was scratching my head to get a good combination of players.. still not finish yet.. but 90% this is how my team will looks like for this season...

Alhabsi - last season he provided one of the most saves / (Ruddy)

Lescott - current form / Givet - will swap with Samba or Nelsen if they're not doubful / Baines - last season form / (Gabbidon) / (Simpson)

    N'Zogbia - current form / Walters - oop / Moses - current form / Nani / Duff - good fixtures for 1st 3 gmwk at least

Rooney / DJ Campbell - good fixtures / (V.Persie - will swap with City forward when get more news on his injury)

    any comments/criticisms are welcome... 😀

Ossie should be way ahead of bilya in the pecking order. But I see your point, lots of good midfield options. 2nd half of last season though ossie was by far their most dangerous creative player, and he's a moyes favorite.
