Wesley Sneijder admits to United talks, however unofficial. Marouanne Chamakh reckons Fabregas and Nasri are heading out the Emirates. Harry Redknapp turns to Real Madrid as he eyes up an old acquaintance. Wolves to assess Kevin Doyle’s fitness. Stoke sign yet another centre-half and Roy Hodgson’s thrilled to bits with Shane Long. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Wesley Sneijder admitted yesterday that he’s been in contact with Man United over a potential move to Old Trafford this summer. The Dutchman has been strongly linked with a move to the champions but with Inter looking for a deal rumoured to be in the region of £35m, there’s been little progress up to now. When asked if fancied a move to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, Sneijder replied:

“Yes but Manchester United haven’t made an official approach yet. There have been unofficial talks, there have been contacts but then there are always contacts. I have contacts with everybody.”

Spurs are rumoured to be eyeing up a move for Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra. The former Arsenal player is unwanted at the Bernabeu and has already been signed by Harry Redknapp before- the Tottenham gaffer brought Diarra to Portsmouth during his tenure at Fratton Park. With Steven Pienaar ruled out for six weeks with a groin injury this week, Redknapp is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements.

Wolves are to reassess the fitness of Kevin Doyle after the striker was sent home from the Republic of Ireland squad. The forward played just less than an hour in Wolves’ recent win over Real Zaragoza but his international manager Giovanni Trapatonni has stated the player is “not 100% fitâ€. With the season about to kick off, the last thing Mick McCarthy needs is his star forward back on the sidelines once again.

Arsene Wenger has named both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in Arsenal’s Champions League squad for the play-off with Udinese. If either player takes part, they would be unable to participate in the competition for any other club in 2011/12. Gunners forward Marouanne Chamakh has had his say on the matter, and it seems even the feeling within the dressing room is one of resignation over the pair’s departure:

I think Cesc and Nasri will probably leave the club. I do not believe that the money available for these two players is really the crux of the problem. I just think the manager wants to find reliable replacements.

Stoke grabbed their second free transfer centre-half of the summer by acquiring Matthew Upson from West Ham yesterday. He joins Jonathan Woodgate at the Britannia, after the ex-Spurs’ player failed to have his contract renewed at White Hart Lane, and gives Tony Pulis an abundance of cover in the heart of defence. With the Potters playing in Europe this season, Pulis was keen to draft in extra defensive cover, he told the club’s official website:

We now have strength in depth in our defence with both Matthew and Jonathan on board and we’ve managed to achieve that without significant outlay on transfer fees, which is quite remarkable in today’s market of vastly-inflated prices.Their experience of performing at the highest level will be a valuable asset to us.

Robbie Keane is on the verge of a move away from Tottenham. The Irishman was farmed out on loan to West Ham in the second half of last season and is clearly not part of Harry Redknapp’s plans for the future. Keane said yesterday:

It’s probably likely that I will be going but I can’t really answer where to at the moment. There’s obviously a lot of speculation but there’s still a couple of weeks to go and we’ll see what happens. I haven’t turned down anything. I think there’s a few people talking to the clubs but that’s all I can really say at the moment.

Roy Hodgson was clearly delighted after snapping up Shane Long from Reading. The West Brom boss finally ended his summer pursuit of the forward by signing the Irishman on a three-year deal and in doing so, now feels his Baggies squad is close to completion. Hodgson said yesterday:

Shane is one of the most talented young strikers outside of the Premier League. He is a goalscorer and a hard-working player who has a very good attitude to the game. Many other clubs have shown an interest in Shane and it is great that we have managed to acquire his services.

Cahill is good for GW1 but after that has terrible fixtures.

You have not spent money wisely here...

      cahill has tough fixtures
taraabt sinclair and moses are relatively unproven and we dont know how good they will be - there are any players at similar prices who are e.g ohara barton even ramsey to some extent
terry could be changed to cole who usually score 2 more goals per season and a few assists too

You might need money in the bank for chelsea players or think of investing now!

Don't see the aura around De Laet myself. And I'm a Norwich fan. Rusty is our RB anyway. The only chance De Laet will get for a game is if Rusty plays at LB and De Laet at RB. And I don't like the sound of that anyway.

Who said Ivan won't start? Seriously, why wouldn't he? I know he's got a yellow flag on him, but he'll be in every week IMO.

Holt/Taarabt/Sinclair (and to a degree Moses and Orr) are all risky picks. You're looking for the next Adam here, and there's no need to pick all 3 in the hopes of getting him over say just waiting 2/3 weeks to collect whoever is picking up the points. Downside risk is too much for me.

Ivanovic is a risk to start this weekend as well.

For me, you need to drop Sinclair/Holt for some more proven talent (Taarabt has the best opening fixture) - possibly go for Jarvis/AJ.

Finally, this whole pick someone on penalties/free-kicks thing is overrated, not at the expense of picking an actual goal scorer/assister (is that a word) at least.

I don't like how people are suggesting with some degree of certainty that Sneijder would not (or will not) succeed in England. As if he's some kind of unproven talent.

He is in his prime at 27 years of age and has been a key member of championship winning teams in the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. A European Cup winner with Inter in 2010, he has also starred at International level in Euro 2008 (scoring one of the goals of the tournament against Italy I remember) and the World Cup in South Africa 2010 (where he was joint top scorer and claimed the Bronze Boot). If ever there was an occasion when a player's credentials could not be called into question, this is it.

Don't buy the media hype regarding the EPL either. I would admit that it is as competitive, if not more competitive, than most of the other top leagues in Europe. It's fast paced, with an emphasis on speed, power and athleticism. This style has advantages which the continent may covet but it can also be seen as unimaginative, predictable and technically inept. Yes many foreign players have failed to deal with the physical requirements... NEWSFLASH: so have plenty of domestic players. The foreign players that have adapted to this style, and complimented it with technical excellence, positively lit the league up. If you were to create a list of the best footballers you have seen to grace the EPL, you can guarantee the likes of Cantona, Zola, Bergkamp, Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo would all populate the zenith of such list.

Surely the question is not if Sneijder can adapt to the Premiership but whether he is really needed at United and whether or not he would fit into Sir Alex's preferred formation? The future of United's attack is being constructed around the burgeoning partnership of Rooney and Hernandez and this may be at odds with the arrival of someone like Sneijder. However where he to go to a club like (dare I say it) City, where the team would be structured around him, and he likely wouldn't be shackled in a 4-4-2, I would highly rate his chances of success.

I can understand people's doubts considering the echoes of Juan Seb Veron - a talented midfield playmaker, a star in Serie A, a United target with a hefty price tag, potentially a "square peg in a round hole". There is a difference though between questioning whether he fits into a team's system and stating matter of factly that he won't succeed. Utilized correctly, I would predict Sneijder to undoubtedly be one of the best players in the league as he has been in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

I'm not really sure what his temperament is like TBH. I'm basing my opinions purely on the performances I have seen.

I seen lots of him when he played for Madrid in La Liga and at the summer tournaments and anytime I have seen him play I have been thoroughly impressed. I found it insulting he wasn't even on the shortlist for World Player of the Year in 2010 considering he had won the European Cup with Inter and reached the final of the World Cup with Holland. He is so influential but underrated.

Absolutely he would succeed in the epl. The imports that fail to adapt seem to lack the graft, work ethic & mental strength to make it work. Sneijder wont have that problem and besides this is one of the very best players in the world we're talking about at his peak. No question in my mind he'd be sweet.
Obviously he is no box 2 box midfielder in a 4-4-2, but if utd sign him the team will absolutely be structured around him. Much to the chagrin of hernandez no doubt.

    Hughes Orr Kompany (Jags) (Enrique)
    Taarabt Nani Moses Benayoun (Sess)

Im constantly tinkering with the defence but am happy with Taarabt, Moses and Benayoun for GW1 but wondering about Silva. It would involve either straight swapping Nani for Silva or downgrading Carroll/Rooney and taking out Sess for just GW1. Thoughts on that dilemma and the team itself?

Like the defence, is that Enrique at Liverpool?

You know how much of a risk Benayoun is but hopefully AVB will give a Carloesque conference about him...I personally would look at downgrading in a couple places to afford Malouda, although looking at your team, that could be far less than easy 😕

Draft strategy is about getting your views on projected returns and looking at each position.

Lampard is the stand out midfielder, so I'd get him first off if he's available. Same for Rooney - I'd be tempted to get Baines/Cole if Rooney and Lampard are taken - VdV/Nani/Malouda/N'Zogbia etc are likely to score similar points, so you can always pick one of them later. It's more important to get the high differential players first.

I'm not tinkering until I hear the news tomorrow from the police and prem league. I'd be amazed if the Spurs game is a goer, the other London ties look doubtful as well. Simply can't spare the police to cover them. Rest of the country I'd say will be ok.

Can't see them cancelling the whole week...be massive fixture congestion...with a few games you can ease them into the fixture list gradually.

Pretty good, I don't like Tiote as the bench mid though. One weakness I can see is having 4 fairly pricey defenders, you've got Kelly yet he's home to Sunderland and you're not playing him - that doesn't sit right with me and I imagine you'll be in that situation fairly frequently.

      Well the RMTs are coming in thick and fast.... I have another if you would care to take a look. RVP is really messing up the balance of it all - I would prefer Drogba/Torres if I knew which one would start. Anyways here goes;

      Al Habsi / De Vries

Habsi cheap as chips, good fixtures. De Vries may not start which means I will have to change him otherwise a decent rotation

      Kompany / Bramble / Baines / Warnock / Bosingwa

Overloaded defence but I cant decide who I want to downgrade so have left them in.. maybe Bosingwa if he doesnt start

      Silva / Moses / Nani / Barton/ Dyer

Nani or Silva can be upgraded to Malouda in gw2 with 1.0 in the bank depends who does well. Barton when playing a full season gets 130 odd points for 6.0 not bad but would prefer Ramsey. Dyer is rotated if Moses has a tough fixture

Van Persie / Carroll / Beattie

RVP is messing up my team atm but cant see how not to have him in if he is match fit of course. Otherwise would prefer Chelsea striker and improve Beattie to someone who migh actually get on the pitch

How many chelsea players will be ideal in gw2 and 3? Is one enough from malouda, drogs, torres?

Gk strategy is a bit off, I think both teams will ship a few in regardless of rotation (after GW3, Al'Habsi's fixtures drop off quickly), also you don't want to be forced to make a sub early on (de Vries)

Decent defence, but I'd downgrade Bos (1. you don't want to make a sub early, 2. you have 2 fixed starters already, so pick a cheap rotation option)

Barton is a risk as well, if he starts you can always sub him in later, if he doesn't you could be caught on the wrong end of a mass exodus. I'm not a fan of anything for 4.5 in the midfield, so I'd avoid a strategy based on that.

Also not a fan of Beattie

Overall I think you're going to be relying on 8 players to make up the points of 11, every week even with rotations, Dyer/Beattie is poor.

GW2/3, I'd want to have Lampard in.

Hi. I play the game on a very short term and strange basis! I don't plan much more than a week ahead. I don't watch football also! Every member of your team should be a definite. Most of your front 8 are a bit of a risk. I prefer definites like Yaya, Rooney, Lampard even Dempsey, if all fit. I like set piece takers and players that their club is built around generally. Week 1 is a total lottery though. I'll probably wildcard in week 2 when we see what line ups are like.

I would change DeVries, it's highly expected that Hennessey will remain first choice.

Defence isn't overloaded as such. It is the Bosingwa pick that just seems like an unnecessary risk. With Kompany and Baines you don't really need him, downgrade to Taylor or Simpson.

I think your midfield is solid but you can't expect to rotate Dyer with Moses when you have Beattie up front.

On that note get someone in who might actually start instead of Beattie.

Finally, one is enough from those 3 Chelsea players. Although my preference would be to have 1 defender and 1 attacker from GW2 onwards.

Any advice on a defender for 5-5.5m?

Have Luiz, Kompany, Simpson and Orr currently.

      Cheers

5.5 Samba for the first 3 if he's fit.
5 Hughes / Enrique (if he goes to Pool)
4.5 Givet short term, Bramble long term.

        Given Ruddy

Chelsea are the hardest players to into your team this season imo. So much uncertainty about some of their players and then ridiculous prices for others, I really hope AVB does an Ancellotti on it and names his team Friday
