Blackburn fail in Raul swoop. Sneijder to United seems less likely. Arteta’s back on the radar for the QPR game after playing in Everton friendly. Chelsea are not giving up on Modric and Samir Nasri denies Facebook comments and insists the account is a fake. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Man United’s attempts to sign Wesley Sneijder look to be scuppered. Inter Milan president Masimo Moratti has indicated the Dutchman is likely to remain at the San Siro now, with Samuel Eto’o on the verge of leaving the Italian giants. Moratti told La Gazzetta del Sport:

Sneijder away? For Wes there has never been any sort of negotiation. If Eto’o leaves, he remains. Sneijder was untouchable even before this hypothesis, now it is even more so. Sneijder will remain.

If this is the case, United youngster Tom Cleverley could be set to play a more prominent part in the club’s season than previously anticipated. Cleverley has already impressed this season, with his second half performance in the Community Shield resulting in a start at the expense of Ryan Giggs in last week’s opener at West Brom.

Samir Nasri is the latest player to be caught in a social network controversy. Nasri has moved to distance himself from a Facebook account that claimed he would be leaving Arsenal with “bitterness and anger”. The Frenchman used his official Twitter page to deny the claims this morning , assuring Gunners fans the account is a fake. The player didn’t take too kindly to chants from the club’s fans at the Newcastle game on Saturday and is surely now edging that little bit closer to the rumoured move to Man City.

Martin Jol is in the market for another striker. Fulham’s no score draw in Gameweek 1 has Jol eyeing up former club Ajax for more firepower, with a move for out-of-favour Mounir El Hamdaoui on the cards. Jol had previously signed the player during his stint at the Dutch giants and admitted he’s weighing up a move for the twenty-seven year-old:

It’s not unthinkable for me to sign Mounir. He is incredibly honest and amazingly direct. He could be a pleasant surprise.

The agent of Niko Krancjar has suggested his client is on the verge of a move to Sunderland. In spite of acquiring ten players this summer, Steve Bruce still feels changes need be made to the Black Cats squad and Krancjar would definitely add a touch of class to his current crop of players.

Still on the subject of Spurs and midfielders, free agent Thomas Hitzlsperger has been training with Harry Redknapp’s side and a possible move to White Hart Lane may well be on the cards for the German international.

Edin Dzeko reckons he’s in for a big season. The Bosnian played well as a lone front man then as part of a pairing at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night, though his performance was somewhat put in the shade by a certain Sergio Aguero. Dzeko praised Aguero before going on to say:

The beginnings have always been slow for me, and that was the case at City, but this year I feel fit and I feel very good. I feel much better than last season. For every player it is important to be fit and have a good pre-season behind him. This summer I have done everything with the team and that makes you feel better.I want to improve in every game, but I have started the season well.

Everton’s delayed start to the season has given Mikel Arteta the chance to recover from a foot injury. The playmaker returned to action in a friendly against Irish side Bohemians earlier in the week and with David Moyes’ side facing QPR this weekend, should find himself the subject of Fantasy investment. Arteta declared after the game:

I’ve been working really hard in the last 10 days and we’ll see how I do in the game against QPR. I will tell you how far I am off full fitness after the game on Saturday.

Blackburn have failed in an audacious swoop for legendary striker Raul. The Ewood Park outfit slapped in a bid for the Schalke star’s services, but Raul -a close friend of Rovers right-back Michel Salgado- is said to have rejected the offer out of hand and asked his club to turn down any offers from Steve Kean’s side.

Kieran Gibbs and Johan Djourou added to Arsene Wenger’s woes last night. The pair limped out of the Gunners nervy 1-0 win over Udinese and the club announced on their official website after the match that they are likely to miss this weekend’s Emirates clash with Liverpool.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Luka Modric shows no sign of abating. With last season’s runners-up unwilling to spend any more than £30m, they are considering offering both Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou as part of the deal that would bring the little Croatian to Stamford Bridge. With a 25 man squad to be submitted to the Premier League next month, this would also free up a space in Andre Villas-Boas’ thinking and may prove to be the better option.

I did Rooney, Suarez and Aguero in a version yesterday but felt it left the team unbalanced. I want two big hitters in def, midfield and attack. You end up having to compromise somewhere.

I reckon keeping a balanced team will allow you redistribute more easily later, and more sustained trends emerge. One gameweek doesn't make a season ...

I'm concerned about whether the new bonus points system has an inherent bias towards goal-scorers, and have been thinking whether to go top-heavy as a result. I just think that over the course of the season regular goal scorers will have their gains further multiplied so as to make them indispensible (whatever the cost).

When did this become -Lets all speculate on things that wont happen /bbc gossip collumn.

Goetze wont move. He is a young German only 18 is it? Only 1 proper season behind him, in the best young team in europe, just breaking into the German team , playing with his mates as the champions under and ambitious manager and he 15 years ahead to move if he want to.
He also said he wont move about month ago, Widely reported in the media and confirmed by the player himself. Euro 2012 is coming up which he wants to be part of so moving to a foreign land , different language all that changes as less than 0% chance. Probably the most unlikely transfer in the world to happen this year

Yet people are talking about it literally every day of the week

And besides he would prob cost 40 million given his value , age resale value, potential , contract length etc.

No keep him in and stick to your guns. £6.5m as opposed to £10m for Bent. There isn't much between them bar paying a £3.5m premium for penalties and who is to say they get any. In fact has Bent actually taken a penalty in a league game for Villa and perhaps the assumption is based on the fact he took them for Sunderland.

I think he'll play the next 2 GWs... but if Alex leaves it could be a CB battle with Ivan vs Luiz, with Bos keeping the RB slot.

What are people’s thoughts on Distin or Jags being just as good a value as Baines, whilst costing a lot less?

Wasn’t Distin’s PPI also pretty good last season and plays most minutes of most games?

Baines scored 5 goals last season, but going off the seasons before, I feel that won't be repeated this year. However, on the otherside of the coin, I seem to remember Baines' assists only really happening when Cahill was on the field. If he wasn't, Baines didn't score as well.

Yeah, and many of Baines goals were pens, which will dry up if Arteta stays fit. Having said that, he does take a stonking free kick.

          here you go

Leighton Baines' penalty secured a point for Everton at the DW Stadium.

He scored late in the second half after Charles N'Zogbia had put the home side ahead and Mikel Arteta had seen his first half spot-kick saved.

arteta missed a pen then went off injured. baines then took the pen with arteta off the pitch. remember it clearly cause i had baines and my mini league rival had arteta. baines paved the way to victory for me last season. 🙂

    Goalscorers > goal providers

This opening weekend 12/15 goal scorers got bonus points. Compared to 6/14 goal providers. And two of those 6 were scorers as well (Klasnic and Aguero).

I really think the new bonus system favors goal scorers more than anything. Which is why I'm definitely going with 3 big hitters up front and trying to find scorers in midfield. Sounds obvious I know but it makes players like Jarvis & Arteta for example less appealing.

    Thoughts?

I posted this above but...I think people are letting the bap allocation steer their team choices too much.

i want Holt, but cant lose Aguero, Suarez or Torres - there are plenty of decent mid priced MF options and with players like Nani and Malouda rotating so much its a simple choice for me.

I've tried getting three big hitters upfront and it means having too many budget players for my liking. I would rather have a balanced team. It will mean less point hits in the future and easy, straight swaps when a player such as VDV has good fixtures.

I too am doing this, probably aguero, suarez and torres up top. still have cahill and yaya in the middle (with the odd watson thrown in)and then players like shawcross, enrique, simpson and Bosingwa at the back. It's nice to look at at least, and if you get your captain right on any of those three strikers youll be laughing.

There has only been 1 gameweek, with few midfield goalscorers & quite a few cleansheets.

Not a big enough sample to make that judgement yet.

But midfielders are less likely to score is surely the point.

I'm leaning towards a dirt cheap midfield so that i can have three big hitters up top and play Cashley, Kompany and Bosingwa at the back.

The thing is there are plenty of decent looking cheaper midfield options - Sessegnon. Taarabt, Hoolahan, NZog, Moses, Ransey, Walters, Tchoi etc.

I mean bonus points aside I think the cheaper midfield options look to offer better options than the strikers. And similarly the big strikers seem to offer better value than the big midfielders.

I had him for the first gw and I think I'll quit with him on a high note, he looked very good and a lot sharper than last year but could be one of the most rotated forward lines in the Premiership when CL starts.
