Roy Hodgson fears Fernando Torres, ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to the Bridge. Everton’s debt may see the sale of sought-after centre-half Phil Jagielka. Blackburn, according to Steve Kean, are on the verge of a triple player swoop. Chelsea may forget about Modric and are head the queue for Juan Mata, while Spurs, Stoke and Fulham warm up for the weekend with wins in the Europa League qualifiers. Here’s todays Scribbles, folks:

Stoke continued their good European form with a 1-0 over Swiss side Thun last night. Tony Pulis continued his policy of playing Thomas Sorenson in goal for cup games, Matthew Upson made his Potters debut at the heart of defence and while Jermaine Pennant was rested, Matt Etherington unexpectedly recovered from a shoulder injury and took his place in the starting XI.

Spurs warmed up for their Monday night trip to Old Trafford by hammering Hearts at Tynecastle. With Spurs devoid of first-team midfielders, Jake Livermore and Niko Krancjar were given a chance and the latter, in particular, ran the show in the 5-0 drubbing . Rafael Van der Vaart served Fantasy mangers a reminder of his talents by grabbing the first in a performance Harry Redknapp reckoned:

I’d say that’s as good as I’ve seen us play to be honest. We passed the ball great. We played with a team with loads of ability and there was great movement everywhere.

Clint Dempsey hogged the headlines in Fulham’s clinical 3-0 demolition of Dnipro. The US international played up front alongside Bobby Zamora and grabbed a double as Martin Jol rang the changes for the Europa League qualifier. John Arne Riise, Dickson Etuhu and Philipp Senderos -all starters last weekend at home to Aston Villa- were rested for the encounter, while Pajtim Kasasmi offered glimpses of his trickery in an impressive showing on the right wing.

Roy Hodgson is running scared of Fernando Torres ahead of West Brom’s trip to Stamford Bridge tomorrow evening. El Nino, of course, played under the Baggies boss at Liverpool last season and with Torres looking the part against Stoke last weekend, Hodgson is wary of his former striker:

I am very glad for him that he appears to be showing some of his old form. Torres, in the form he is capable of showing, is capable of causing a lot of problems for my defence…he is a top-quality player – and I fear that I will see that at close hand on Saturday!

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he is still in the market for midfield recruits before the end of August deadline. Ahead of this weekend’s Liberty Stadium showdown with Wigan, the Swansea boss admitted :

We need to make sure we have enough strength and that there is enough depth, and midfield is a key part of our game. A lot of the basis of our work on the field is based around midfield and it’s about having enough of the different types for us to control the game or win the ball, and it’s about having coverage at the back.

Blackburn are on the verge of signing three new players. Having been snubbed by Raul earlier in the week, Steve Kean will not be deterred and the Ewood Park outfit look set to add a defender, midfielder and forward to their ranks over the next few days.

Newcastle are rumoured to be after PSV left-back Erik Pieters. Alan Pardew is tracking the player following Jose Enrique’s departure and despite being linked with Wayne Bridge and Ally Cissokho, a move for the Dutchman is now said to be more likely.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright yesterday revealed the scale of the club’s financial plight. The Toffees are struggling to keep the banks at bay, which lends weight to the belief that Phil Jagielka could be sold to alleviate part of the problem. Everton have yet to sign a player this summer but in light of this revelation, perhaps it’s little surprise.

Andre Villas-Boas is unsure whether Chelsea will make another bid for Luka Modric. With two bids for the Croatian already rejected by Tottenham, Chelsea would need to top the £30m mark to stand any chance of success.

“I don’t know if it’s viable or not and to what extent we can go regarding his price because we are speaking about a high amount and nothing else basically. End of story.I just have to study the rest of the market and hopefully find a solution for my team.”

Other reports suggest the Blues are on the verge of clinching a deal for Juan Mata. Villas-Boas is a keen admirer of the player and with Arsenal unlikely to match their spending power, Chelsea appear favourites to clinch the highly-rated Spaniard’s signature.

    Some thoughts regarding Hilario.

I understand he's a short term option, perhaps only 2 gameweeks, and many people seem to think that taking out Given for him is a bad move as you'll waste a transfer down the line. I agree.

However, the transfer window will be closed in a couple of weeks and I'm sure that with all the ins and outs people will be getting itchy fingers with the wildcard.

I know there is a majority of people who always end up using the wildcard early (myself included) and I'm thinking after the international breaks won't be a bad time to do it. By then we should also have a better understanding of who are the 'essentials' and what the bloody Chelsea back 4 is.

    Hilario is IN!

If you've already pencilled in when you're going to wildcard, Hilario is as good a choice as any. As for me, I still believe I can hold onto the wildcard until GW 10 at least.

I can definitely see the reasoning, but I don't think the points difference between Given and Hilario is worth either having to make 2 transfers (Hilario out, another Chelsea def in), or use a WC. There's a chance you will be happy with the rest of your team and the WC can be saved.

        The problem is price

        1. Hilario + Warnock = 9.5.
        2. Given + Bos = 10.5

and nobody truly knwos whether Bos will keep his place for the next couple of weeks. I personally 'think' he will but who knows! Yes Ivan played CB all pre-season but Alex and Luiz were unavialable/unfit.

Price - there's enough value out there to find the odd 1.0 in other areas.

Agree Bosingwa is potentially very short term, and is a gamble. But Hilario is guaranteed short term. You're almost tieing yourself into the WC.

But Hilario is at least guarenteed for these next 2 home games...Bosingwa arguably isnt.

Regarding price, that extra 1mil is very hard to find!

...all this because of Baines and his bloody 8mil price tag!

So Given and Vorm or Hilario and Vorm?

The second option will alow me to downgrade Cashley and have Rooney upfront, but this http://twitter.com/#!/plfantasy/status/104229340203589632 scares me. Whenever I had the cheaper goalkeeper they didn't do me proud, but that means and the ultimate expensive Che defender will concede.

        +1 Time and time again, the correct template for the opening GW's has proven to be 2 big, one small, e.g. 12 + 10 +6.5, 12 + 11 + 5.5, etcetera.

I feel like I'm missing something regarding Sunderland.
At the very very best I see them keeping 1 clean sheet in their next 5 games.
Also, cant undersatand all the Sessngon support????
Surely Larsson is painfully obviously way better value at the same price of 6.5 ??? He's on almost every single set piece.
And I'm asssuming that Gyan is on penalties..

Thats kinda my point.... I've been reading it but I'm just not buying it. I'd agree with you that 10th place is realistic for Sunderland this season. But I think they'll keep feck all clean sheets and score very few goals... I see a lot of 1-1, 1-0, 2-1 games invovling them this season.
I'd consider Larsson. thats playing the odds. Because of set pieces. But Sess is def not for me...

Sunderland were on a run of about 6 cleanies at one point last season...then became ravaged by injuries, lost confidence and tailed off....They are REALLY well orgamised defensively and outside City/United/Chelsea/Arsenal it wouldn't suprise me if they finish next with clean sheets.

    Suarez (Arsenal Away)
    Torres (WBA Home)
    Moses (Swansea Away)
    Sinclair (Wigan Home)
    Saha (QPR Home)
    Dempsey (Wolves Away)
    Larsson (Newcastle Home)

      Starting: Aguero 25%/Torres 85%

Playing some part: Aguero 90%/Torres 100%.

Thing is, some part might be 15 mins.

Why is everyone opting for Suarez over Carroll after one game?

I am because Suarez looked a lot more in form, has the advantage of 0.5 million and Carroll doesn't get the same sort of dominance that he had at Newcastle with Liverpool. I am often wrong though.

Because he a miles better player, way underpriced at 9.5, will have a major say in set pieces and most likely get a lot more Bonus points and assists than Carroll too.

Aguero is a must, but not until GW 4.
It has to Be Rooney, Bent and Torres for GW 2 & 3. HAS to be!
All with 2 HOME games in a row.
      Rooney on Penalties
      Torres v 2 bottom 6 teams
      Bent on Penalties & v 2 botttom 6 teams
