Man United rack up a comfortable win over Tottenham to join Wolves and Man City at the top of the table on six points. Wayne Rooney scores in the opening two league matches for the first time in his career, while Harry Redknapp is now insistent that Luka Modric stays put. Here’s this morning’s Scout Notes:

Youthful United
Sir Alex Ferguson fielded his second-youngest starting XI ever in the Premier League but the outcome was the same as ever. Patrice Evra returned from injury and was the only first-choice member of the back-four, although the recent performances of Chris Smalling at right-back may offer him a more regular slot in the first-team, even when Rafael recovers from his shoulder injury.

Fergie continued with the bustling, energetic pairing of Tom Cleverley and Anderson in central midfield and the duo played a crucial part in the goals- Cleverley’s cross created the opener and Anderson scored the second as United grabbed a firm hold of the match.

Fergie’s Forward Dilemma
Dimitar Berbatov once again sat out the proceedings, with Danny Welbeck vindicating his recent starting slot alongside Wayne Rooney up front with a goal and an assist. Javier Hernandez’s return to action as a sub, however, may signal the end of Welbeck’s game time, though with a game at home to Arsenal up next on Sunday, the United boss will be wary of the Mexican’s lack of match-fitness.

Fergie praised Welbeck for his influential display before admitting he has something of a selection dilemma up front:

He (Welbeck) is still only 20 years of age and the lad has a great future. If you look at Berbatov, Owen, Hernandez and Rooney, they all have different qualities. You have to utilise all that and make changes as best you can. The horrible part for me now is with having Javier back, what do we do? It is going to be a big problem for me.

Modric Staying Put, Says Harry

Earlier last week, Harry Redknapp had indicated he’d be willing to let Luka Modric move on if the money could be used to re-invest, but last night his opinion seemed to have changed. With Spurs chairman Daniel Levy adamant that the Croatian won’t be moving to Chelsea, Harry called for the pair to sit down and settle their differences, with the saga clearly starting to have an effect. Redknapp admitted the player’s head “wasn’t right” and left him out of the Old Trafford match, but post-match, stated:

He will stay and we will move on. The chairman has made his mind up that he’s not going to sell him and there’s no point this late in the window because it’s hard to get replacements and that won’t help anyone.

Spurs Soft Centre
With the likes of Sandro, Tom Huddlestone and Jermaine Jenas still out of the picture through injury, Harry Redknapp continued with Niko Krancjar and Jake Livermore in central midfield – the duo were impressive in the 5-0 win over Hearts last week but the current lack of options will surely see Redknapp make a move in the transfer market before the month is out. Former Arsenal player Lassana Diarra is out of favour at Real Madrid and, having working under Redknapp at Portsmouth, has been strongly linked with a move to White Hart Lane

Redknapp on Changes
Brad Friedel started in place of Heurelho Gomes last night, with Kyle Walker replaced at half-time due to illness. Having given as good as they got in the first half, the Spurs boss admitted his tactics after going a goal down in the second forty-five put a more comprehensive spin on the scoreline and handed the initiative to United:

We were going well in the second half, no real problems, but we conceded a goal and then we opened up. That goal changed the game and gave them confidence. I brought Pavlyuchenko on, went with two up front, dropped Rafa into midfield, and then we looked very open.

We were looking for an equaliser but we became too open and it was a problem.I took a chance, looking for a goal. Rafa might score, Pav might score, Defoe might score, we still had two wingers on. We were very open but at 1-0 down it was a case of trying to get an equaliser.

It's a great year for FPL. We'll probably get another free week soon so absolutely everyone can have the same team.

Anyone know the story on H2H leagues? Starting fresh at some point or backdated to when they should have started had the FPL team not been useless?

I think the whole first week fiasco has screwed up total fpl's stats...or the equations that FPL have changed (it may be % based for increments/decrements as opposed to predefined number of transfers in out?)

They are usually spot on, so give them time and they will sort it out, although I paniced and transfered Torres - > Suarez as I thought he was going up last night.

All the transfers between GW1 and 2 were wiped off,so players with massive TFI just start with a higher opening ownership, requiring far greater numbers of transfers to alter prices.

Hows this team for the weekend?

    Given
    Baines, S.Taylor, Bosingwa, Simpson
    Lampard, Sinclair, Brunt
    Torres, Suarez C, Fletcher

    Subs: Vorm, Hoolahan, Moses, Warnock

Not sure about doubling up on Newcastle defenders. Might try and get a Liverpool defender. Play Vorm or Given?

All it proves is that the slightly crap players had a good gameweek - people will kneejerk and put them in their main teams only to have the likes of Torres score a hat-trick past them next week.

People worry far too much considering we're two weeks in, you weren't geniuses or idiots for having high-scoring benches, it's just that the poorer teams with cheaper players who can sometimes perform (bench-fodder) all worked out. Most of us suffered from the same thing and people presume far too much from "tricky" fixtures - Man U have a crap run but oh look, they're still winning and scoring well.

But Tottenham was a "tough fixture", as will be Chelsea, Liverpool, City etc - but someone will do well in all those games as in every other match. Fixtures mean very little in FPL, it's just which individuals stand out per match.

What to do about Toure. I am concerned the way Toure was employed in the last game. In City's first game he was pushing forward a lot but sat back in their last outing. Thinking of benching him this week (if Moses is fit) and then upgrading next week with my two free transfers.

Anyone holding on to him? Should i bite the bullet and do a 4 pointer this week?

    Cheers

there is a huge different to toure's output depending on whether de jong is on the pitch. If he plays like he did at home to swansea with de jong behind him then he's a season keeper. If de jong is out he stays back.

Therefore I'm keeping the next week...if de jong is out the week after then he will magically become Silva. But ideally i'd want both toure and silva.. Man City are going to take teams to the sword this week...I want as much of their action as I can get.

de jong plays deep and in his abscence toure drops deep, but now with 4-4-2 formation, i think theyll stick to this one in the easy games and bring dejong in for the big games where more defensive duties are required

Good points....shouldn't be too negative & price rises might behave differently this year.

But if Moses is injured then I'm not hopeful of Holt or Kompany earning more than 2 points, it would depend on Jarvis performing away from home. Any price changes and the move cannot be made.

Perhaps Vorm/Given not the best combo, if they're matching home/away. Ideally, home advantage with a better match-up would make decision largely for you.

Having said that, many of you may have had better matched keepers pre-bonus WC chaos.

i hear you but not really based on that one save Camzy. I watched the Man city games as well - this boy is quick at getting down and making stops - seems very decent

do you think given over vorm then? just thinking of sunderlands attacking potential. Thus far i have seen sess and gyan taking shots from outside the box and vorm should be good enough to stop them

I'm keeping Torres for this week, but if he messes up next time, I imagine there'll be a mad scramble to ditch him, which will necessitate an immediate early transfer to avoid massive price drop. So, to be prepared, who would be the likely must-have strikers for the following few gameweeks (4 onwards)?

People are supposing that the algorithms used to work out price rises will stay the same as last year. Why should they? Its FPLs game, they can do with it as they wish. If sites like total fpl and fiso try to guess how this is worked out it doesn’t mean they will get it right.

Has anyone thought that this year FPL may have also changed the way in which prices rises and falls work? It wouldn’t surprise me – as it would stop people who can work out the system from profiting early season by building team value. Maybe there will be less price rises/ falls this season

he was always very bonus reliant, the amount of 4s and 5s he got with 2 and 3bps was what helped him tick along nicely in the past. passes don't seem to be as significant under the new system* (e.g rooney tripled welbeck for both overall passes and key passes, dzeko outdid silva for key passes), so if it's mainly down to goals and assists i think you have to go with jarvis. average position maps show he's actually wolves most advanced played even ahead of fletcher and doyle.

lol at people moaning about the new bp system.

Last year everyone hated it because it was not objective enough. This year people hate it because it's too rigid and based on stats - 'don't they watch the games?!'

They can't win - it's not always possible to pick a clear cut mom, let alone a top 3 that everyone will agree on.

    No pleasing everyone eh?
