Two games into the season and Chelsea have struggled to make much of an impression. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have dominated both their opening fixtures in terms of possession – 66% at Stoke followed by 67% at home to West Brom on Saturday evening – but it’s already obvious that in order to implement the new manager’s philosophy, more creativity in the key attacking areas is needed.

At present, both full-backs, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, have carried the game to Chelsea’s opponents more than any Blues player. Re-installed to the first-team this season, Bosingwa showed on Sunday that his attacking tendencies could be a vital component of Villas-Boas’ team over the 2011/12 season and with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 5.5 in comparison to Cole’s 7.5, will likely rocket in Fantasy ownership if he continues in the same vein.

Both players have picked up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in each of Chelsea’s first two games- Cole in Gameweek 1 and Bosingwa in Gameweek 2- and with that in mind, here’s some analysis on the pair’s respective performances at Stamford Bridge against the Baggies:

Cole and Bosingwa versus West Brom

A look at the Chelsea average position map from the Baggies game highlights just how far forward Cole (3) and Bosingwa (17) played- the pair were almost as high up the pitch in possession as Frank Lampard (8) and Ramires (7) and both saw far more of the ball.

Bosingwa, in particular, was a real stand-out against Roy Hodgson’s side. He made 102 passes, more than any other player this Gameweek and with 68% of his distribution in the opposition half, he carries a significant threat going forward for Chelsea. Cole made 73 passes, a substantial drop in comparison, with 70% coming in the Baggies half.

Lampard and Ramires Passing

Much of this difference in the number of passes each full-back made can be attributed to the midfielders on either side of John Obi Mikel. When the ball went left, Cole had Frank Lampard to contend with for possession whereas on the right, Bosingwa had Ramires. Lampard was far more willing to take on responsibility and make things happen- Cole made 16 passes to Lampard but received 8 in return.

On the other flank, Bosingwa passed to Ramires 13 times and received 11 in return- a far more even ratio. Lampard made a total of 70 passes to Ramires’ 45- clearly, when the ball went right, Bosingwa was far more liable to be the player in possession and as a result, created the assist for Florent Malouda’s winner.

Narrow Baggies
For as much as the Chelsea full-backs were impressive going forward, West Brom’s lack of width was noticeable on Saturday evening and summed up Roy Hodgson’s savvy tactics. A look at the average position map show the two midfield wide men, Chris Brunt (11) and James Morrison (7) stayed narrow and with both central midfielders, Paul Scharner (33) and Youssuf Mulumbu (21) shielding the back-four, Villas-Boas’ side were unable to find a way through from central areas.

Aware of Chelsea’s lack of central cutting edge, Hodgson allowed Villas-Boas’ side the flanks, meaning Cole and Bosingwa bombed forward and left space at the back. When in possession West Brom hit 69 Long Balls for the hard-working front two, Shane Long and Somen Tchoyi , to chase into the space vacated- the ploy clearly worked as John Terry and Alex were troubled with the Baggies strikers’ movement throughout.

Though it’s early days in his stewardship, it’s clear Villas-Boas is still searching for a better balance. There’s something of an air of predictability about the Blues right now and it’s a problem the new boss must solve if he’s to live up to the heady levels of expectancy so typical of the Roman Abramovich regime.

Last night’s news that the club have agreed a fee with Valencia for the services of Juan Mata represents a significant step forward in his rebuilding process. Someone with the ability to beat a man and unlock defences from the middle of the park will not only add a vital component to Chelsea’s play and bring Villas-Boas a step closer to his ideal line-up, it will perhaps prevent the likes of Hodgson setting his team out in such a stolid and stubborn manner.

should I add Jose Enrique? seems like everyone on here has him in their teams--with a price rise likely; should I drop Aaron Hughes for him? or another defender--I have Bosingwa, Roger Johnson, Kompany, and D. Simpson across my backline

I'd drop Simpson, as the Newcastle bubble won't last forever and he seems the least likely to rise. But I would double check that via TotalFPL.

        D. Simpson is mainly a low-price filler--his value is 4; I would have to drop someone else to bring in Jose Enrique, who is valued at 5--both Aaron Hughes and Roger Johnson have the same value as Jose Enrique

“Imagine the worst situation – we lose Fabregas and Nasri – you cannot convince people you are ambitious after that.

“And even if you lose Nasri, to find the same quality player, you have to spend again the same amount of money. Because you cannot say, you lose the player and you do not replace him.

“I believe for us it is important the message we give out. For example, you talk about Fabregas leaving, Nasri leaving.

“If you give that message out, you cannot pretend you are a big club, because a big club first of all holds onto its big players and gives a message out to all the other big clubs that they just cannot come in and take away from you"

I read an article the other day that Wenger and the board are currently arguing about raising the salary cap. It claimed the board are willing to spend 30+million on a player but won’t offer the player the wages they would get at City/Cheslea/Man Utd and Wenger says they need too if they want to keep players like Nasri and sign players like Mata etc.

It then said that the reason Wenger didn’t make offers for Cahill/Jagielka is because he wants Arsenal to have world class players. I don’t know if it was true or not though – the guy had ‘unknown sources’

when he arrived in 96 he immediately increased wages of certain players that were paid less than others. He believed in some equality bullshit for all players in terms of salary. Same problem we have now with the dross like almunia getting 50k pw, Bendther 60kpw, Denilson 50k pw etc. This is why we are stuck with them because no one will willing to pay them such crazy wages

He doesn't have total control of the club. As suggested in that article he can't just decide to raise wages significantly, its not his money. I'm not doubting his suggestions hold a lot of weight but wenger does not control arsenals finances.

the NTI figure is apparently much higher than last year, according to fiso the number is at 80000(well 79142) and all the players are still below that, reading from that, the prices should rise at some point today, but for not that many players.

The NTI target is preset and can only be guessed but the NTO is defintely done by ownership 10% according to the fiso guide anyway. Since not one player has risen I tend to lean towards the fiso guys, who state they may be wrong but they're closer than most.

Nobody actually knows is the truth- any figures quoted by sites such as fiso and TFPL are pure speculation. They weren't always bang on last time round and they have absolutely nothing to go on this year.

It looks to me (again, pure speculation) like there's still a freeze on price rises- for nobody to go up or down, especially with big scorers like Jarvis, Vorm, Ryan Taylor, Silva and Bent- is pretty odd.

P.S. where abouts in Melbourne have you moved to? You're not Harry Kewell are you?

I agree it's speculation and I know the Fiso boys get it wrong sometimes.
The whole FPL site seems to have quite a few problems to sort out. Some people don't like change and sometimes new things are as good or old are missed but changing a site from works grand to constant issues was a bad move, folks patience are wearing very thin.Everyone is usually really excited by the start but that august good feeling has been flat.Nobody died though!!!

Yeah ok, seems like rotation of your players is definitely causing you problems. At least wait until Friday when we get more team news and then check the 'team line-ups' tab on top here to see how Moses and Cahill are looking then.

Imo you have to play Simpson ahead of either Shawcross or Hughes and then make the one you bench your 1st sub in case Moses or Cahill doesn't play. Personally I think they will both play atm but, like I said, there'll be a much clearer idea of that come Friday evening.

I think you could help your team a lot better if you were making more than 1 transfer and that would mean waiting til after the int'l break.

None of these options make any appeal tbh.

Ramsey plays in a struggling team not offering much ff-wise right now.
Bale/Yaya- Yaya plays DM in away games and Bale offers little in FPL.

VDV is the best of the bunch but Dyer plays in a SWN team that is going to struggle to score goals this year.

yeah i know, maybe a different combo?
        my team is:
        Vorm Given
Bosingwa Enrique Brown S.Taylor De Laet
        Silva Jarvis Brunt ? ?
        Bent Suarez Rooney
14.5 to spend on two mids, or downgrade elsewhere?
Selecting my team as ive been overseas so i got pretty much a WC, Cheers

Personally, I like the Bergo/Given g/k roatation. Almost perfect for the whole season with good team home form to count on.
The Scouts have identified that g/ks are more likely to score boni than your bog-standard defender so it worth the extra cash in my opinion.

Cash wise, well Sess is a must as he's seeing a lot of ball and plays as an OOP.

That give you 8 mill. Now I have a real problem with the 5th midfielder right now. Silva and Sess are my only shoe-ins. Everyone else is a bit of a muddied field.

Anderson and Cleverley at UTD interest me if they stay in the team.
Moses at WIG is a cheap option. I have gambled on Hoolahan more in hope than anything.

what are the thoughts on Krul here. Have Given/Vorm but Newcastle have been impressive defensively as a team and imo, could be a side that park the bus and put up clean sheets as that looks to be their best option at results this season....

could use the .5 as well

Krul/Vorm rotate reasonably well. I can see Newc holding more cleansheets than last year, but I don't think they're going to rival Villa for cleanies.

Good point. If we were all playing our w/c this week, I'm sure you'd see a few g/k rotations with Krul in them.

NEW obviously rotate well with SUN, another side that I expect to keep a few cleenies.

However, NEW offer Simpson at 4.0 and SUN have Brown at the excellent value of 4.5, so these players, price-wise at least, will take precedence for now.

Don't expect the newcastle run to continue, they have only scored one goal in two games when you are constantly under pressure defending is at a higher intensity always bringing the risk of getting scored against.

What I am saying is that newcastle do not have much attacking potency therefore are going to be under the pump therefore are not going to get many clean sheets. They drew at home on the opening day to a depleted arsenal. There always seems to be more draws on opening day. They played their bitter rivals in gw2 who have not beaten them for a long while in the league.

Having said all that they do have favourable fixtures for the time being. I think it comes down to personal choice as villa also has a favourable run of fixtures. Personally I think aston villa have a more solid defense and also have a more potent attack therefore are going to win more games and potentially keep more clean sheets.

Newcastle could be a sinking ship also if Krul makes a few mistakes harper could be back in the side (looks doubtful at the moment).

Remember you are only going to play your rotating defenders in the home fixtures which provide you with a stronger prospect of cs.

NEW at home is a tough fixture for a lot of teams not matter what the stage of the season.

well i avoided a knee jerk reaction to another bad weekend. Instead i mulled it over and then played the wild card before values change.

    Vorm Krul

S Taylor R Taylor Kompany Bosingwa enrique

    Brunt Downing Jarvis Silva Moses

    Roonpig Bent Suarez

This team should (hopefully) finally get me over the 50point threshold. Value changes tonight would be nice. 50 points behind the leader already :/

dont know how many times i will have to explain this but here goes. Price rises are due for 7 players out of my team. I put them in now and leave my final decision for the weekend. Just not so sure Bent will do the business again this week. Villa vs Wolves is usually as tough derby. last year wolves beat Villa 1-0 at villa if I'm not mistaken and Wolves are a far better team this year.

Before gw3 lockout without doubt, yeah I saw him as a season keeper and a safe one to start with, if better options appear at 4-5 I can trade him out and have a bit of cash floating around.

With the investment at liverpool more clean sheets should be on the way, especially if they manage to buy a centre half before the transfer window closes.

          Mornin' Flynny!

I had this theory that FPL was under new technical development and realised how good the Metro game looked two gamweeks in. So they decided to suspend price changes and Metronize the new FPL game.

          Seems like they've had a rethink 😕

I don't have a problem with change as long as it's change for a beneficial reason.

At the moment, I'd suggest we are still seeing a number of malfunctions occurring rather than permanent changes.

Mornin' Jafa, Metro is much like the Guardian used to be, before some pillock there decided fantasy football was not good enough for their readers (idiot). I like the Metro, made a couple of howlers but hopefully sort it with the "Wildcard".

Rooney already a bit of a must have.

One thing that strikes me about Metro is the need to find the right captain on a regular basis. It certainly spikes your score up when you get it right.

Agreed! On one team I've had it right for the first 2 GW's and the others I've gotten it wrong. As a result one team is top 100 and the rest start at 5,000.

    Looking for FB/RMT,

    Given/Vorm
    Kompany/Bos/Shawcross/De Laet/Simpson
    Silva/Cahill/Sess/Ramsey/Zog
    Bent/Rooney/Johnson

Should i replace sess/ramsey for brunt/jarvis? sunderland n arse doesnt really look like scoring and their attacks are pretty dull.

Or replace cahill to a 6m mid, and use the 3m to upgrade on johnson? but then again not too comfy only having 1 big hitting mid.

    Cheers.

Brunt in first (fixtures) and see if you need anyone after that.
      Ramsey's fixtures ease up soon.
We are being too impatient with our teams, presumably we didn't bring them in for 1 week. Now because they're not instant hits it's panic time.

yep was considering booting shawcross anyway (didnt know why picked him in the first place, maybe thought stoke would be solid this season.

just wondering how many points per GW is considered good? (60? 70? if i can achieve them constantly) first timer fpl here :/ so yeah

STK will be solid this season esp at home hence my point about Bergo above.

Points totals? Depends on the gameweek. This week was a bit of a lowscorer so 40-50 is pretty good.

at home yes, but playing away stoke still looks unconvincing like last season (albeit just the 1 game this season)

still not sure whether to get 3-4 big hitting players and fill up the team with mediocres or try to get decent players all around.

I think there are some scoring trends emerging that you need to consider upon selection:

Goals and assists bring bonus pts so forwards look to be the main beneficiaries.
Bonus points tend to go players on winning teams.
Defenders are bottom of the pile unless they score/assist.

I would put more quality upfront.

Jarvis is actually a good transfer though. Would have been a better one last week of course... personally I opted for Fletcher and Hoolahan instead of Jarvis and Holt, not regretting it at all.

The Jarvis bandwagon is annoying because he's actually a good player to have but the majority bringing him in had probably never even heard of him until he popped up as the highest scoring midfielder last week.
