A night of Carling Cup action sees four Premier League clubs bite the dust already. All three promoted clubs are out, though while both Paul Lambert and Brendan Rodgers had some tough words to say, Neil Warnock seems less than bothered. Wolves continue their recent good form by sweeping aside Northampton Town, while Steve Bruce rues his forwards’ lack of finishing. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

A 4-0 home defeat by MK Dons saw Paul Lambert suffer his heaviest defeat as Norwich boss. Lambert made several changes from the side that drew at home to Stoke but watched on as both Wes Hoolahan and new signing Daniel Ayala limped off before the end of the game. The Canaries boss couldn’t hide his displeasure at the performance, ahead of the trip to Chelsea this weekend.

Disappointing – really, really disappointing. We got what we deserved which is absolutely nothing and we were never at the races-we lost to the better side. It’s probably the first time in two years that I’m really disappointed… we have to pick ourselves up and go again. I picked the team and I take full responsibility for tonight. When something like this happens it is my fault.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers was less than impressed with his side’s 3-1 loss at Shrewsbury Town. Rodgers made nine changes to his first XI from the match against Wigan but seemed to hint there will be more changes on the back of this performance:

That team was good enough to get the result. You’ve got internationals and million pound players out there, so they should have done the job. This was their chance to put their hand up and say pick me against Sunderland on Saturday. Instead they put their hand up and said don’t pick me.

Neil Warnock made plenty changes for the home tie with Rochdale but, despite the likes of Adel Taarabt and Jay Bothroyd playing the full ninety minutes, saw his side lose 2-0. Right-back Bradley Orr was subbed off just on the half-hour mark, though this was a precautionary measure, according to the official website . Midfielder Martin Rowlands picked up a knock and was replaced in the 71st minute by Shaun Derry. Warnock was less than concerned with the exit, saying:

“I don’t think people care about the competition. I’m not disappointed to be out. The competition is not a priority for us. If I can’t get motivated for the competition I can’t blame the players if they can’t.”

Mick McCarthy made eleven changes from the side that beat Fulham at the weekend but Wolves continued their good early-season form at Northampton. The likes of Michael Kightly and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake were given run-outs and although the latter impressed with a brace, he was hurt when scoring his second and was resultantly taken off on eighty minutes.

Roy Hodgson also made eleven changes from the side that lost at Chelsea as West Brom travelled to Bournemouth. The Baggies won 4-1 and the game was significant for the return from injury of Jerome Thomas. The winger opened the scoring and may come into contention for the weekend game against Stoke, with James Morrison possibly making way on the left flank. Hodgson said after the game:

“At the moment, I haven’t picked the team for Stoke. Tonight, we saw one or two players take a chance to impress upon me that maybe I should be considering them for the first team. Partly, that is what these games are about for us because otherwise you don’t get that opportunity. We know they’re good players at, say, reserve-team level but I need to know they’re good players at senior level.

Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton won’t have impressed Steve Bruce. The Black Cats boss made minimal changes to his starting line-up for the tie but watched on as his new-look side suffered their second straight loss. With one goal in their opening three matches, the season hasn’t got off to the best of starts at the Stadium of Light. Bruce laid the blame on his forwards, saying:

We created enough chances to win the cup-tie but we failed to do that because of our inability, once more, to put away chances. We’ve got punished for it and it’s worrying. We certainly had enough strikers on the pitch but we just didn’t convert our chances . We’ve got to learn to do that.

Away from the Carling Cup, Arsene Wenger received more bad news yesterday. On the day that Samir Nasri agrees terms with Man City, Jack Wilshere’s ankle injury will keep him out of action until well into next month. The Arsenal boss is keen not to rush the midfielder back to action, with Wenger blaming overuse of the player last season as having a knock-on effect.

Wenger had some good news on the injury front ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League qualifier at Udinese. Tomas Rosicky, Johan Djourou and Armand Traore are all included in the squad and though Laurent Koscielny is still unavailable, he may be ready in time for the Gunner trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Samuel Eto'o will now make close to £1.5m per month! He will earn £340,000 a week after tax! Equating to £48,000 a day. So he earns £2000an hour.

I can understand it. He's won all there is too win. He's showed that hes a world class player, nothing more to prove. He's coming towards the end of his career. Probably grew up in poverty, the urge for more money is only natural.

To be fair he's already won it all and its A LOT more cash. Wouldn't you? He's the most decorated African player of all time, is one of only four people to win CL with two different teams. Why not kick his feet up in Russia at 30 and earn a retirement for him, his family, and anyone/anything else he'd like to do with the money!

Mikel, like Walters I'm not really sure why he's there. I've got Malouda as well though but he'll be shipped out next week for Aguero. Would be nice to have Mikel around at 5.0 for the odd clean sheet/bonus points when fixtures are against my other players.

The argument for Walters is less convincing...

But given the circumstances, nothing much changed, that's all. The ends are the same, the means changed.

            Murder = intent to kill
            Manslaughter = death by negligence/recklessness

Well, you're the one who said 'technically murder' 😛

I was just being technical ... and the difference is hardly pedantic.

Frankly, it's not manslaughter, either - as the use of a taser is neither reckless (unless the officer was drunk) nor negligent (the officer left it out at home for a kid to get a hold of).

The person was going to hurt themselves and had a deadly weapon. Use of a taser in that situation I am sure is approved of.

Well, a taser and a sniper rifle are two different things ... but if the rifle was a tranquilizer gun, sure.

Or, if the jumper was endangering others, than even a regular rifle *might* be justified.

A taser is a non-lethal weapon and therefore not 'deadly force' ... that doesn't mean tasers can't be fatal (that's what many people don't understand about them and what makes them controversial) if you have congenital heart defects or under the influence of stimulants, for example.

    Steve Bruce...
We created enough chances to win the cup-tie but we failed to do that because of our inability, once more, to put away chances. We’ve got punished for it and it’s worrying. We certainly had enough strikers on the pitch but we just didn’t convert our chances . We’ve got to learn to do that.

no transfers this week... I think I will save mine for next week to use two at once.

    this week I have:

    hilario (krul)
    jagielka - collins - bosingwa (senderos - s taylor)
cabaye - almohomady - nzogbia - downing (duff)
    suarez - aguero - torres

so yeah, like the many of you I want rid of torres, but it makes no sense to me to ditch him before norwich and I do believe he will start. He looked hungry in GW1, like the good old days at pool, and if I transfer him without a points hit I will be sitting on money in the bank... next week I can downgrade him and upgrade another part of my squad.

Shane long I had in the beginning but went for the crazy expensive forward 3 instead... which seems like a mistake while odemwingie is not in contention. He has shown himself good value for money and able to score against the biggest teams.

I'm thinking next week torres -> long and a midfielder (nzog or elmo maybe) -> silva.

do you see a single transfer I would be better placed to make this week? What do you think of my proposed double transfer next week?

please don't tell me I have no man u / arse cover, i know that and don't want their players for now

with my current team I'm thinking of captaining torres and vicecaptaining downing

bolton are crap away and downing looks great, and I have a gut feeling torres will have a smashing game if just to screw over his FPL competitors who've transferred him out

1st suggestion - More capital letters and less spacing in your posts please.

2nd suggestion - Stick with Torres as the fixture is too good to ignore. Don't captain him though as it is far too risky.

3rd suggestion - Your double transfer is good and looks like what most of us with Torres/Lamps are going to be doing after GW3.

      Good luck.

I think I've discovered a fantastic strategy at winning this game.

1.) Perform terribly the first few weeks with players that everyone has high expectations from but are innevitably dissappointed by.

2.) Muster up some unjustified faith in these players and captain them relentlessly - nobody else will because they are too 'sensible' and judge their picks by 'form'.

    3.) Watch your team soar.

I've been mulling this over and despite this being my first venture in FPL I think it seems a pretty fail-safe plan. That said, (C) Torres for me again, perhaps RVP next week, rinse and repeat and I should be top by Xmas.

Everton work ball out wide to Baines as often as they can. Baines crosses for Cahill or Saha to score. Osman is often the one doing the good link up and passing the ball to Baines to cross. So he won't get you many assists.

He does score goals though and is an attacking player. When Everton are on form he gets about 1 goal in 4 but he is ofen utilised in a wide position where he is less effective. If Everton sign a winger before the deadline and Ossie is played in middle then he'll do well.

In short, too many ifs, not recommended.

Even wenger isn't that stupid. You've got 2 huge holes in your team that need filling. Wilshere can play the fabs role, and Song and M'Vila would be the two workhorses behind. Maybe you don't need to buy another winger though with Ryu, Gervinho and Oxbowlake. 1 massive hole then.

Im not convinced on a CB. As you say, M'Villa would add a bit more discipline in midfield, it owuldn't all be left upto Song. Vermaelen was outstanding the other night and i think Kos compliments him well. Vermaelen being the main dominant defender and Kos reading the game and breaking up play. A left back is a must though, should have got Enrique!

Is it utterly excessive to have Suarez, Rooney, and Aguero in my team? I just think the latter is gonna haul in far more points than Silva over the season.

I was originally just gonna swap Suarez for Ags but he's pretty much Liverpool's only guaranteed points haul for now and perhaps the rest of the season with the competition they have for places.

        cheers.

Would still have Baines, Kompany, Bos, Jarvis, and maybe Anderson in my squad as well so its hardly weakening other areas.

Providing Young and Nani share their points I think the days of the 10+ massive points scoring midfielder are gone...

I have a Wesley Hoolahan shaped problem in my team. Didn't start at the weekend and then limped out of an inglorious CCup tie. 6 mil to spend. Thinkin O'Hara (Wolves6.0), Dyer (Swansea 4.5), Brunt (WBrom 6.0)? Any other suggestions?

He is indeed, but too much uncertainty atm. If he gos to QPR, I already have Taarabt.

Anybody's got the latest on Moses and T.Cahill ?
Their Fixture looks juicy to be transferring anyone of 'em right now , and im banking heavily on them for the next GW . So if both are unfit would cost me a lot . A little info on them would do my team good . Cheers !

Fellow scouts. Does anyone remember the massive rant one poster went on last season talking about his rival's fantasy football team but then went off on a tangent about how this rival also has a better job, nicer looking wife, all the luck etc etc 🙂

That was hilarious and probably the highlight of last season's comments for me. Can't remember his username but I hope yas have a clue what I'm on about or someone has it bookmarked.

    Legendary uber rant.

That was classic ... but I don't believe any of this from maxi's end.

It's impossible to be that stupid. I have to believe that.

He's a silly and amateur wummer, as bad as Jas - just in a different manner.
