A night of Carling Cup action sees four Premier League clubs bite the dust already. All three promoted clubs are out, though while both Paul Lambert and Brendan Rodgers had some tough words to say, Neil Warnock seems less than bothered. Wolves continue their recent good form by sweeping aside Northampton Town, while Steve Bruce rues his forwards’ lack of finishing. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

A 4-0 home defeat by MK Dons saw Paul Lambert suffer his heaviest defeat as Norwich boss. Lambert made several changes from the side that drew at home to Stoke but watched on as both Wes Hoolahan and new signing Daniel Ayala limped off before the end of the game. The Canaries boss couldn’t hide his displeasure at the performance, ahead of the trip to Chelsea this weekend.

Disappointing – really, really disappointing. We got what we deserved which is absolutely nothing and we were never at the races-we lost to the better side. It’s probably the first time in two years that I’m really disappointed… we have to pick ourselves up and go again. I picked the team and I take full responsibility for tonight. When something like this happens it is my fault.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers was less than impressed with his side’s 3-1 loss at Shrewsbury Town. Rodgers made nine changes to his first XI from the match against Wigan but seemed to hint there will be more changes on the back of this performance:

That team was good enough to get the result. You’ve got internationals and million pound players out there, so they should have done the job. This was their chance to put their hand up and say pick me against Sunderland on Saturday. Instead they put their hand up and said don’t pick me.

Neil Warnock made plenty changes for the home tie with Rochdale but, despite the likes of Adel Taarabt and Jay Bothroyd playing the full ninety minutes, saw his side lose 2-0. Right-back Bradley Orr was subbed off just on the half-hour mark, though this was a precautionary measure, according to the official website . Midfielder Martin Rowlands picked up a knock and was replaced in the 71st minute by Shaun Derry. Warnock was less than concerned with the exit, saying:

“I don’t think people care about the competition. I’m not disappointed to be out. The competition is not a priority for us. If I can’t get motivated for the competition I can’t blame the players if they can’t.”

Mick McCarthy made eleven changes from the side that beat Fulham at the weekend but Wolves continued their good early-season form at Northampton. The likes of Michael Kightly and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake were given run-outs and although the latter impressed with a brace, he was hurt when scoring his second and was resultantly taken off on eighty minutes.

Roy Hodgson also made eleven changes from the side that lost at Chelsea as West Brom travelled to Bournemouth. The Baggies won 4-1 and the game was significant for the return from injury of Jerome Thomas. The winger opened the scoring and may come into contention for the weekend game against Stoke, with James Morrison possibly making way on the left flank. Hodgson said after the game:

“At the moment, I haven’t picked the team for Stoke. Tonight, we saw one or two players take a chance to impress upon me that maybe I should be considering them for the first team. Partly, that is what these games are about for us because otherwise you don’t get that opportunity. We know they’re good players at, say, reserve-team level but I need to know they’re good players at senior level.

Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton won’t have impressed Steve Bruce. The Black Cats boss made minimal changes to his starting line-up for the tie but watched on as his new-look side suffered their second straight loss. With one goal in their opening three matches, the season hasn’t got off to the best of starts at the Stadium of Light. Bruce laid the blame on his forwards, saying:

We created enough chances to win the cup-tie but we failed to do that because of our inability, once more, to put away chances. We’ve got punished for it and it’s worrying. We certainly had enough strikers on the pitch but we just didn’t convert our chances . We’ve got to learn to do that.

Away from the Carling Cup, Arsene Wenger received more bad news yesterday. On the day that Samir Nasri agrees terms with Man City, Jack Wilshere’s ankle injury will keep him out of action until well into next month. The Arsenal boss is keen not to rush the midfielder back to action, with Wenger blaming overuse of the player last season as having a knock-on effect.

Wenger had some good news on the injury front ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League qualifier at Udinese. Tomas Rosicky, Johan Djourou and Armand Traore are all included in the squad and though Laurent Koscielny is still unavailable, he may be ready in time for the Gunner trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What do you think of this team for the next few GWs guys?

Given (Vorm, who I'll prob play this week)
Enrique- Warnock- Bosingwa (R.Johnson- R. Taylor)
    Taarabt- Brunt- Lampard- Jarvis (Surman)
    Rooney- Bent- Suarez

Thinking midfield may need some work?

very similar to my team and im also a little unsure on midfield. i have silva as my expensive midfielder and Moses as my cheap option and then looking at a coule of 6-6.5m options. Jarvis is already in and at the moment have Cabaye as i thought Barton was leaving and he'd be the main set pieces man. Not seen much from him yet though so am looking at other options but Newcastle have a good fixture run coming up.

Sessagon, Brunt, Taarabt and Larsson seem the popular options in this area at the moment but looking for suggestions.

also one id considered but worried about his fitness id Pulis has him playing in the Europa League games midweek too. definately worth a consideration though. im also tempted to hold off on transfers until next week when the window shuts and squads are finalised until January

Wildcard means you can change your whole team for free. You get 2. One to be used any time and one in a fixed date range later in the season (check the rules).

A couple of points I am pondering about team value:

    * Players are more expensive this year
    * The number of transfers it takes for a player to rise in price has increased this season, therefore it will take more time to build team value

Therefore isn't it more beneficial than usual to wildcard early this season?

We also lost the first week of transfers, which is usually the busiest time as casuals are still paying attention and there's plenty of knee-jerking and early wildcards.

Russian banana sellers rejoice at news of Eto'o's move to Anzhi.

Considering what Roberto Carlos has had to put up with, and also the fact that he's been outspoken about Racism due to being victimised in Serie A, makes this a rubber stamp of approval for money over everything else.

Patience is a virtue. Did you really expect 10 points a game from Cabaye when he had ARS and sun? Yes Torres hasn't produced the goods yet but if I had him I'd certainly keep him for NOR.

Really can’t decide who to bench this week. I was thing about one of the following 2 formations…

    Given (De Vries)
    Simpson, Boswinga, Enrique (Kompany, Shawcross)
    Brunt, Jarvis, N’Zogbia, Downing, Silva
    Bent, Aguero (Fletcher)

    or

but after all, even if he does good (unlikely) how long it will be before drogba and lukaku get some starts here and there? while avb is insisting on the 4-3-3 with 1 natural striker.

interested in hearing what the pros on this site think of chasing point rises e.g. have simpson in my team, could have used transfer last night to swap for taylor, same price, on a few set pieces etc and catch the price rise which was bound to happen last night and probably more in the future but wasnt sure if it was worth using a transfer. what do u reckon? should price rises play a big part of thoughts in transfers or if you have point scoring players should u just let the rises come? should i have done it anyway?

sorry for long question but thought it might be slightly interesting.

    cheers

Early on in the season it is worth taking a few hits to catch price rises, building team value is crucial in the first 10 weeks, it gets much harder after that as most of the nailed on points scorers are snapped up. That being said, despite his threat at set pieces, it would be a slight sideways move to upgrade Simpson to Taylor at this point, going in the right direction for a sideways move mind, he is a better fantasy prospect for sure, but if Newcastle maintain their current streak of clean sheets you will be getting 6 from both most weeks.

A price rise for the right player, a bit early in the week sometimes, is worth the move, but you have to be clever with them, usually transferring a player you want medium to long term in early in the week is worth the gamble for me, whereas if it was short term, and just to catch the rise, I would wait, the injuries players pick ip in other cup competitions and training are not worth the transfer come deadline day.

Keep an eye on FISO and TotalFPL for price rises, now is the time to make money for sure, particularly this season where expensive strikers have started well, harder to utilise that 100m effectively.

JU, has excellently described the tradeoff on early week picks. I was right on that line for several early picks and got burned twice out of maybe 8 picks. "Burned" means a second or third benchplayer had to come in to make up for my early pick who got hurt or maybe the coach announced on Friday another of my "good" players wouldn't start and I would have used my free transfer for him.

I know that the price changes has its role in the game but I for one really have no interest in it.
The example you gave there is a great one - people chasing prices swap out Simpson (nailed on starter) for R.Taylor (going to be dropped again soon) for a 0.1 difference. There is little chance of him going up 0.2 so there is no resale value.
Plus it means that they then have the possibility of facing a points hit if one of their other players becomes injured etc.

OK, price rises are important to increase your team value over the long haul-- gives you a chance to actually get Baines for example next Feb or a like value player, (by NYears I think many had values around 103-4, last year, (Drogba, Carrol and Adams were the big, fast risers) but I can't tell if we are increasing that fast this year, yet). Of the five rises, two have legs, Silva and Suarez, unless they get hurt.

Boswinga/Taylor are iffy, they will rise if they hold their slots. Jarvis will be steady if he plays like last year, just a gradual riser- unless he scores two this weekend- then we will get a bandwagon.
On Taylor/Simpson, probably a 20% chance that would work out. Taylor has enuf time to rise again before he might lose his reg starts- then you make a tenth.

The second WC has really tamped down the number of risers/fallers this year- because the early injured players or nonstarters were dropped. (Vidic, ARS defenders, Fabs, Nasri, etc) I am not a pro, but just played OK last year.

Cahill and Moses could be injured this weekend from what I have been reading on here.

I would hold fast, I am doing the same with Torres and Carroll up front wasting space. Another week, another week we know Bosingwa will start, Sessegnon might be playing up front still (maybe, after last night) and is a good time to make moves. Patience is the key grasshopper.

Cahill and Moses will probably play this weekend. I'd wait and see, if not just wazz Silva in for Cahill. Theres a lot of panic on here at the moment, unjustified in my opinion. I had a pump start last year too, and made it up to win my league quite comfortably. The start is always an unknown, and its no surprise to see the promoted teams getting some good results. Hang tight till after the internationals.

If Torres does not pull his finger out then Chicharito will be making an appearance,

Then again we'll have to see what happens with Mata, Modric (if he goes), Torres may be on it like a tramp on chips with them feeding him.
