Arsenal give their boss something to smile about with a gritty win in Udinese. Blackburn and Everton grab their first victories of the season in the Carling Cup. Luis Suarez takes Exeter apart to earn Kenny Dalglish his two hundredth win as Liverpool boss. Tuncay sparkles on his Bolton debut with a goal and an assist. Daniel Levy tells Chelsea to drop their interest in Luka Modric yet again while Joey Barton tweets as he prepares to join QPR. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Everton made amends for their poor start to the season with a 3-1 win over Sheffield United. The Toffees bounced back from last weekend’s 1-0 home loss to QPR, with youngster Ross Barkley again a stand-out. Mikel Arteta and Marouane Felliani both completed the ninety minutes and Louis Saha had a half hour cameo ahead of the trip to Blackburn.

Kenny Dalglish’s starting XI saw Luis Suarez selected for the trip to Exeter City. The Uruguayan again showed his class, scored one and assisting two in the 3-1 win. The Liverpool boss saw Raul Meireles leave the proceedings early on and confirmed after the game the midfielder will be out for a “few weeks†after injuring his collarbone.

Steve Kean picked up his first win of the season as Blackburn beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Ewood Park. Rovers got off to a flier, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes and significantly for Kean, it was two of his signings that grabbed all the goals- the former Barcelona midfielder Ruben Rochina scored twice while David Goodwillie also netted.

On-loan Tuncay spared Bolton’s blushes with an impressive Trotters debut. With his side one-down at home to Macclesfield, the new boy helped turn things round with a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win. It was Martin Petrov who grabbed the winner, continuing his good early season form for Owen Coyle’s side.

Arsenal showed a real strength of character to send Udinese crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers. Despite going a goal behind, the Gunners proved too good for their hosts and thanks to goals from Robin Van Persie and Theo Walcott, as well as an outstanding penalty save from Wojciech Szczesny, cemented their place in the Group Stages with a morale-boosting victory. Arsene Wenger was delighted with the win:

We have been a little bit under pressure and for us not to play the Champions League and with the players who left, that pressure would’ve increased, understandably. Since the beginning of the season, I feel a very strong, determined attitude within the team. We responded in a very positive way, even being down 1-0.

Harry Redknapp is convinced the Luka Modric to Chelsea story is now dead in the water. The Spurs boss revealed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had spoken to the Stamford Bridge club and told them to forgot about signing the player:

“The chairman made another statement last night that he is definitely not going. He said he spoke to Chelsea and he told them, ‘Let’s put an end to this because it’s not going to happen’.”

Redknapp has admitted he will play Modric tonight in the Europa League match with Hearts- the midfielder’s involvement in the game means he would be unable to play in the Champions League until February, if he does leave White Hart Lane before the end of the month.

With Juan Mata joining Chelsea yesterday, there are whispers in the air that Florent Malouda could be on his way to Juventus. While Mata can also play through the middle, his arrival places question marks against Malouda’s game time on the left and with the Frenchman a sub in last week’s home game against West Brom, the link may be stronger than just paper talk.

Joey Barton moved a step closer to a Newcastle exit yesterday. The midfielder underwent a medical ahead of a move to QPR and perhaps unsurprisingly, took to twitter to express his feelings on the situation:

Going for a medical now, still no contract offer from NUFC…….think that just about makes my mind up.Don’t want to leave Newcastle……..I’ve made that clear but my hands are tied.

I asked before but seeing as there's a bit more traffic now anybody got a decent one week midfield punt for 8.0 or under?
So far had Barkley and Gomez suggested. Anybody else got a suggestion?
Will Tchyoi lose out now Odem is back? Anderson and Cleverly not worth against Arsenal? Barton on his debut?

My outside bet would be Petrov. If he can cause Man City problems down the left then I reckon he can test the relatively new pairing down Liverpool's left. He's in form, has pace, quality and experience - like all good players he'll probably look to raise his game in a match against a top team.

Contemplating Cabaye myself. With Barton gone shouldn't he be hogging setpieces? Also a chance he might take over penalties as he is considered a specialist in the area.

I've got N'Zog chopping him for Bale barring injury tonight. Fancy him to score against City, just got a feeling, I know if I don't do it he will and if I do he won't same old but you've gotta have a go? Don't rate Zog only put him in temporary as Spurs had no game and can't see Wolves rolling over.

I'd definitely plump for VDV instead of Bale this week. Richards is the rare defender with pace and strength to stop Bale's ridiculous direct runs and City have conceded most of their goals so far when CB's have been pulled out of position, by a roaming support striker say... 😉

Well they have already dropped 2 points in only 2 games, if they want to try and win the league Suarez should be playing in the vast majority of their games. He can rest when they are not playing in Europe.

Suarez has had plenty of rest, and anyway having watched him for more than a year at Ajax I can tell you he is extremely fit and not requiring much rest

So AB, is there an opposite of the dividing by 2/3 to get the estimated value of a forward, but for a player who works really much?

I suggest you multiply Dirk Kuyt's goals with 4 to find out his true worth to his club for example.

    Hi, is Marknlard still about?

I'm replying to his thoughts on http://www.ratemyteam.co.uk from page 2.

Our team numbers are fitted to what the market thinks (betfair specifically).

So, if you like a team more than betfair does you should boost the players from that team.

e.g. betfair makes Aston Villa around 32% to keep a clean sheet at the weekend and Swansea around 31%. That is why Given is predicted very slightly higher points this week than Vorm. (Although goalkeepers for worse defences get more saves, it never actually works out that you want a keeper with a lower clean sheet percentage.)

So if you disagree with those odds you should shift the numbers accordingly.

    Hope that helps! 🙂

Cheers for the reply! But if you're switching the numbers in your head or on a piece of paper, then doesn't that defeat the point of the site and its comparisons? My point is the same, that if you disagree with those figures then there's no point using the site and mentally readjusting.

Also, how does it work in the future fixtures if you're using betfair? Presumably GW12's fixtures have a market but the projections are on the site.

Not trying to be critical, just user feedback to make it more of a useful tool.

For most players taking into account betfair opinions will massively improve their team. So, the site is useful for many people. I have had countless emails from people saying how useful the site is and how it has helped them.

With regards future performances, we use a team model which can predict long term and use current betfair opinions to push our numbers closer to what the market currently thinks. (Normally our team models are very close to the market anyway.)

We are trying to add more and more helpful explanations to the site as time goes on; we're growing and hopefully will continue to do so. So keep your eyes peeled in the future.

Thanks for the feedback- it is much appreciated. Good luck this week!

ONLY safe Chelski bet IMO is Cashley, AVB's doesn't appear to have fully decided on his best XI yet, Strikers and Midfield are ALL prone to subs or being played OOP.

Saying that I've got Torres in my team this week, bit of a bad GW2 for me and hope that Torres will be the difference between 220Kth and 100Kth...

Aim is to be in top 1K at the end of teh season and that will be a toughie and a whole lot of luck.

If I didn't already have Suarez in before his price increase I would have Bent instead, and I'm a liverpool fan!

He and Enrique are the only Liverpool players I'd consider right now, not totally convinced by them at all and they've got a tricky mix of fixtures coming up.

What I don't understand is how they can go from a fully functional site last season to a what seems to be broken now. Lots of features removed and broken, when the system seems to be the same. Unless it has something to do with changing servers or something? But it looks like they changed the graphics and a few other things so why is it so bad and how can it take so long to sort out?

    Wouldn't it be funny if:

    1) Fergie retires at the end of the season having won nothing, the Americans got Bankrupt and are forced to sell the Squad to repay the debts.

    2) Chelski owner finds his past catches up on him and has to hire an army to keep the Russian Mafia off his back and demands all debts be repayed - Chelski go bankrupt

    3) City find that their kit sponsorship is in breach of the new rules and they are forced to cut everyone's wages to meet the new rules, they finish outside the top ten.

They says bad things come in three's....

    Just somehting to think about

Only bad bit would be how it would effect the premiership, the greatest league in the world!

I was so keen to avoid getting another boselli this season I've gone all out heavyweight attack. Means I lack the flexibility to pounce on a pricey midfielder or defender, but I am free of the shame of another boselli, d graham, SEB etc.

Grant Holt will happily pass me by. I've only seen him on MOTD highlights but he looks like a big old lump of championship striker to me..may score the odd goal, but I'd prefer Grant Mitchell tbh.

Not really the same though, considering Smalling started his career there, it soon became obvious that he was good enough for a higher level so he got a move to the PL.

Holt started in non league, floated around the lower leagues for 10 years and ended up in the PL because his team got 2 promotions. He's a decent enough lower league player, which is good because I'm sure he will be back there quite soon

It was basically Holt that got the 2 promotions though, fairly sure he was their player of the season for both those years, not to mention their top scorer both years also. You can't say he can't hack the PL just because he hasn't scored yet. I think he'll score 10+ this season.

              BTW I don't have Holt.

Holt was at Norwich when they had their horrendous start to the season in League 1. Then Lambert came and they got promoted, so I would say, out of anyone, Lambert basically got them promoted twice.

I just figured he had a touch of the Andy Carroll about him. Promoted player, not particularly gifted, but a big lump who could cause problems for defenders and get goals.

Normally I trust my own judgement for most of my selections, but when it comes to the bargain players I sometimes pass the responsibility of those selections to this site. Unfortunately I have been let down, but it was my decision.

I wasnt that impressed with Grant Holt last year IT (not just because he's from Norwich either). Yes he scored a lot of goals, but often against terrible defences (ITFC's included). He always seemed quite cumbersome when i watched him. That said goals are goals, and I wouldnt be surprised if he scored a few this season (being on Pennas helps).
For what it's worth i always thought Hoolehan was Norwich's main man - but then he was benched last game so who knows.

Malouda is more likely to start, Torres competes with Drogba and Anelka for the central role, albeit really only Drogba, and Malouda competes with nobody.

AVB said Mata won't start, he also said Malouda played well out the left and was pleased with him. Ergo, I am correct in all I say.

Kalou, I believe, was taken off relatively promptly against West Brom for a sub-par performance. If you think he's going to start in place of Malouda who came on and scored the winning goal for us, you have a screw loose.

              Once again, I am correct.

Wow both? The thing is they're both quite uncertain to play, but one of them will probably score in the next game 😕

If I were you I would try and do either:

      Malouda>Silva

      or

      Torres>Suarez

That's unless you already have both Silva and Suarez?

then i suggest replacing Malouda with a striker, Suarez or Bent are looking good.

I don't get it, you seem to have 6 midfielders (Malouda, Silva, Taarabt, Sess, Sinclair, Moses)? Or are you wanting to bring Malouda in?

    Given
    Simpson, lescott, enrique,cole
    Silva, malouda(c), nzogbia, taarabt
    Rooney, holt
Subs: al habsi, moses, zamora, delaet

Don't really know what the situation with moses/zamora is tbh but if either of them looks like playing then they'll go in 4 holt... :p

6/10, not sure whether I'd have the guts to captain Malouda. I really can't see any value in N'Zogbia this year, but it has only been 2 games.

It is good aside from Torres and R Taylor, maybe wait and see how much Mata is, if he's 9.0 (fingers crossed), you could maybe take a punt on him and have Rooney, Simpson, Mata instead of R Taylor, Torres and Nani?

Just read a funny article on players nicknames given by (invariably Spanish) commentators.
Some of the gems are: Pan Triste (Sad Bread) for Lee Bowyer; Cortinita (Little Curtain) for Bacary Sagna; El Jabalí (The Hog) for Wayne Rooney

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jul/19/commentators-weird-football-nicknames-the-knowledge

    just had to share it

Im looking for some advice on where this looks a good plan for the next few weeks. I want to keep my free transfer for two next week.

    Vorm
    Lescott Baines Enrique
    Yaya Sinclair Sess Moses
    Rooney(c) Suarez Torres
    Bench:Given Caulker Orr Hoolahan

After this im going to look at getting rid of Torres and Hoolahan, where I will go without Chelsea coverage until GW 6 and look to bring in Fletcher and Silva with good fixtures and re-assess then, does this look a good idea or any flaws?
