It was a case of anything you can do, we can do better yesterday, as Man City’s outstanding win at Spurs quickly overshadowed by the subsequent events at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko both continue to look impossible in terms of Fantasy selection, while Ashley Young’s displays keep Nani firmly in his shadow. Samir Nasri had a dream debut for Man City, while elsewhere, Newcastle finally concede, thanks to a late consolation from Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. Here’s the Scout Notes on one of the most extraordinary days in Premier League history:

Rampant United
Wayne Rooney’s brilliant start to the season shows no sign of abating, while Ashley Young’s integration into the United XI has been seamlessly exhilarating. The pair grabbed five goals and four assists between them and tore Arsenal to pieces with a show of attacking brilliance- even with the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand sidelined by injury, the home side’s superiority was overwhelming. Anderson and Tom Cleverley continue to excel in midfield, surely banishing any thoughts of a move for Wesley Sneijder once and for all.

Sir Alex Ferguson done well to downplay his delight at the 8-2 demoliton:

“We’ve had a couple of big results against them in the past, but when you see Arsenal’s team like that, we do expect to score goals. It was a funny game, a strange result but we can only do our jobs and I think the players kept it professional that way and did their best. We’re showing great energy at the moment and great enjoyment in our game, and that’s important.”

Gunners Torn to Pieces
Arsene Wenger’s selection problems were well-documented in the lead-up to yesterday’s game. Francis Coquelin was handed a start in defensive midfield for the Gunners and both Thomas Vermaelan and Bacary Sagna missed out at the back as the visitors deficiencies were ruthlessly exposed by an almost-cruel United.

Carl Jenkinson’s sending off means Arsenal have had a player red carded in all three of their games so far and further adds to Wenger’s woes. The Gunners boss admitted he was hurt by the defeat and insisted he will endeavour to boost the ranks before the end of August:

I am very open if we can find the right players. We have the money to sign players. If we find players who can strengthen our team then we will do it. But I am not the only one to work on the case, we have 20 people who are working on that. If we do not do it, it is because we don’t find them.

Spurs Hammered at Home
The rumoured arrival of Scott Parker at can’t come soon enough for Harry Redknapp. Yesterday’s game saw Niko Krancjar partner Luka Modric in central midfield and the home side’s lack of a naturally defensive-minded player in the middle of the park was exposed by a ruthless Man City. The corresponding fixture ended 0-0 last season but the 5-1 result reflected Tottenham’s lack of strength in depth as much as it showcased City’s array of attacking talents.

To add to Redknapp’s woes, Krancjar and Aaron Lennon both picked up groin injuries, while Rafael Van der Vart’s troublesome hamstring problems again played up. The Spurs boss is intent in adding more than just Parker to the ranks before Wednesday’s deadline:

“The place needs a little bit of a lift now, and I’ve told that to the chairman. I feel we have to freshen the place up a bit. We’ll get one or two more in.”

Nasri City’s Chief Creator at Spurs
Man City’s hammering of Tottenham saw Edin Dzeko pick up the plaudits, of course, for his four goal haul in the 5-1 win. Roberto Mancini praised the forward post-match:

“I was always sure that Dzeko would score a lot of goals for us. He always scored for Wolfsburg in everything that he played for. He was perfect, he was incredible.”

The performance of Samir Nasri was also exceptional- the Frenchman picked up three assists at White Hart Lane- incredibly, he had 1 assist over the course of the entire 2010/11 league campaign. While Nasri’s creative presence helped City cruise to victory, owners of David Silva will have taken note that the Spaniard failed to have a hand in any of the five goals- a clear sign he’s got competition as a midfield creator.

Yaya Toure once again played deeper, with Nigel De Jong still sidelined with a foot problem, while Roberto Mancini rotated both full-backs from the previous game- Vincent Kompany and Joloen Lescott look the only definite guarantee right now in the back-four.

Hodgson Unhappy
Roy Hodgson fielded the same starting XI for the third game in a row for the home tie with Stoke. The Baggies failed to find the net as the visitors grabbed a contentious last winner, with Hodgson fuming over what he perceived as raised studs by Ryan Shotton on Ben Foster in the challenge that led to Stoke’s goal:

Shotton’s foot was very high and he was leading with his studs. I’d have been happier maybe in some ways if I hadn’t seen such a clear foul…having seen a replay, I’m not very happy either that the goal has been allowed to stand.

West Brom visit Norwich in Gameweek 4 but Hodgson is uncertain over the availability of Peter Odemwingie. The striker suffered a slight recurrence of his ankle problem and wasn’t risked for yesterday’s game.

Pulis Glad of a Rest
Stoke’s trip to the Hawthorns saw Tony Pulis make four changes from Thursday’s Europa League win over FC Thun. Matt Etherington and Roger Huth, both suspended in midweek, returned to the first-team, while Matthew Upson and Thomas Sorenson made way for Jonathan Woodgate and Asmir Begovic respectively.

Yesterday’s game meant the Potters have now played seven games already this season and have chalked up five wins and two draws. Pulis is delighted the fortnight’s break will give his tired squad a chance to recuperate:

The international break couldn’t come at a better time for us after what has been a magnificent effort by the players in the circumstances. It’s been a very tough start to the season for us and we now have the chance to take a breath and get one or two players back from injury.

Pardew Hails Best
Alan Pardew’s side continued their winning ways with the 2-1 defeat of Fulham at St James’ Park. After last week’s 4-2-3-1 at Sunderland, Pardew went with a 4-4-2 yesterday- Demba Ba was once again benched, as Peter Lovenkrands joined Leon Best up front. In his first Premier League start of the season, the latter grabbed a double and earned the praise of his manager as the Magpies made it seven points from a possible nine:

I never really worry about his confidence. He kind of has that in abundance, which is not a bad thing for a footballer. I have known him for a long, long time and come up against him a couple of times and for me, he has never really had a run where he has said, ‘I’m the man’. He will get an opportunity now and he needs to prove it. He still needs to improve in some areas, but he was great today, especially in the second half.

Fulham not Firing
Martin Jol’s Fulham continue to struggle. It’s clear Fulham’s early start to the season is having a major effect on Jol’s first-team selection, with so regulars already sidelined with knocks. Clint Dempsey played up front again, with injuries to the likes of Bobby Zamora limiting the Cottagers options and the American grabbed a late consolation to breach the top-flight’s last remaining perfect defensive record.

Aaron Hughes returned to central defence, with Philipp Senderos benched, and John Arne Riise’s leg injury allowed Matthew Briggs a start at left-back. Steve Sidwell started in central midfield, with Pajtim Kasami playing on the left wing. Jol refuses to blame his side’s fixture schedule, though:

At times the freshness and sharpness was missing, but we can’t blame our involvement in the UEFA Europa League. We are a good team and we were on top of them today. We need to realise that when we have the ball we need to keep it. The result should have been better. We are creating chances but they are just not going in for us right now – that is an issue. The difference today was that they [Newcastle] took theirs.

Young, Silva, Suarez, Dzeko, Rooney seems the way forward. Might swap Silva to Walcott though for the upcoming fixtures.

You still think Silva is the way to go despite Nasri's performance yesterday? I don't think it was by chance that Nasri filled his assist-boots... Silva is a great playmaker from midfield, but Nasri is was constantly maurading forward and making more threatening runs.

On the highlights it looked like Silva had a fair few opportunities to get points, maybe it just wasn't his day. Depends how Mancini is going to play them, Silva less likely to be hit by rotation me thinks!

Anyone lost/losing patience with N'Zogbia? surely just a matter of sticking with him before he produces goals/assists. Bound to happen if shipped out of any team. With NEW/QPR/WIG coming up they seem rather favourable fxitures to hold onto him.

Just thought i'd share a few points that i've been contemplating the last few days.

My start to the season has been a nightmare. Just like it has been every year that i've played this game. Last year, i ommited Drogba for his hattrick of goals and assists, this year i've ignored Rooney and Young and have paid the price.

However, as with every year i've decided to play my wildcard early. Although part of me thinks its the wrong decision, in previous years it has paved the way to decent seasons. In fact, last year, if i hadn't sorted out my team early, i doubt i would have even made it into the top 100k.

So now i've decided to bring in Smalling, Bosingwa, Dzeko, Suarez, Rooney, Walcott, Taarabt in the place of my underperforming players. Unless there's some injuries in the next few weeks however. Preseason is not the best judge of who will perform in the league, and i will be taking it with a pinch of salt next year. If you are debating using your wildcard now - i would do it. Now is the time when crazy results happen and players seem to hit form and stay on form. If you look at your team, and you see bad fixtures and bad performers (which is what i had) as the fixtures have now changed and got harder for your players - i would suggest to do the wildcard, sort out your team and go from there. It doesnt matter if it seems like the wrong thing to do, it has saved me before and i hope it saves you this year like it did me.

Just my 2 cents, i'm probably an idiot and should of taken a few point hits instead, but thought i'd share with you 🙂 Good luck, and congratulations to any rooney / young combinations and captains.

I agree for the most part... it's just so much happens in the last few days of the transfer window that line-ups and even formations can change really quickly. I'm holding off my wildcard until I find out the situation at Chelsea (near impossible to predict line-up next week, good luck guys!), and we see which players teams like United and City will rest for Europe.

players last year like vidic, tevez, baines, etherington, nzogbia etc. all seemed to ht form early, although i do agree that others (drogba, malouda) did fade out.

In my experience, if the team carries on doing well, it will be the same players that show early form that will continue to score the points.

I concur wholeheartedly AZ, my lack of Manx coverage has certainly cost me, and yes it may be knee-jerk but they by the looks are head and shoulders above the pack. Also my midfield cheapies have bombed, Sinclair N'zogbia shocking, Maouda prob won't get as much game time with Mata, Cahill, no the same since pre playing for Aussies in Feb, Bent, not looking as though he will get the chaces minus Young and Downng, Richards..appear rotation risk now. I have loaded up with potential risers(already have Suarez and Bos pre rise)

May be mad, but it certainly can't be worse

    Current WC Thinking, thoughts?:

    GiVorm

    Bosingwa - Kompany - Brown - Simpson - N. Taylor

    Lampard - Nasri - Walcott - Dyer - Barton

    Rooney - Dzeko - Holt

My main concern is basically just a lack of Suarez, but I want Rooney and Dzeko and I cannot find a way to get Suarez in with those two without raping the defence. Long term I can probably bring him in for Dzeko and Enrique in for Kompany when Pool's fixtures brighten.

Also how to people think Barton matches up with other 6.0s?

That's made me feel better. If he's still on pens it's a concern, but if he doesn't score against Stoke and Spurs I can see his price dropping, he's already on his way this week with people presumably going straight after Dzeko.

Think his price will stay the same but can't see him scoring at Stoke there on good form undefeated in the 7 games of this season (including uefa cup quals) and only let in a couple.

Again tottenham will be a hard side to beat at their place cant see him them capitulating again and I will imagine will strengthen in the next few days

Added to this that he will be sharing time with Carroll I cannot see where the love for him is.

My captain choices of Torres the last two weeks have effectively put me 50+ points behind in my mini-leagues already, coupled with Utd's demolition of Arsenal(which no body could have expected). Just to put things into context from yesterday, Tottenham conceded a total of 19 goals at home all of last season and they conceded more than a quarter of that total in one game to a player who looked like he couldn't hit a barn door last season. Arsenal conceded a total of 28 goals away all of last season and they conceded a total of 28.5% of that total in one game, unless i've screwed up my maths.

I’ve had an absolutely awful start to the FPL this year, actually its my worst ever start, team is -

        Hilario, Vorm
        Brown, Cole, Senderos, Simpson, Warnock
        N’zogbia, Cahill, Sinclair, O’Hara, Moses
        Rooney, Torres, Suarez
        2 free transfers.

        So I’m thinking of -

        Torres -> Dzeko
        N’Zobgia -> Nasri

I want to do it now as Torres/N’Zog will fall this week and Dezko and Nasri will rise.

Just do it? I have a wildcard if I get glutted with injuries….

        Anymore opinions on this?

Not yet, hoping it's added later today or I may have to. :O I wouldn't normally agree that it'd be an assist but with the new rules it fits the criteria for one. I could do with an extra 6(+2 if it means an extra bonus point) points because of how poor the rest of my attacking players did. 😛

No proce changes because the new fpl website is shit. It clearly couldn't handle everyone bringing in Rooney, Dzeko and Young at the same time, so they said it was 'updating' rather than admit to it. I guess they couldn't justify locking people out and increasing the prices of the players they were all trying to bring in. It's really cocked up the price rises for this gameweek.

Will dzeko only rise 0.1 tonight (if any rises at all)? He's at over 300% so any chance he will rise by 0.2?

        Afternoon lads. Quick question?

My front eight at the mo

        Brunt. Yaya. Nzog. Moses. Sess
        Rooney. Dzeko. Suarez

Do I... A. Trade yaya for silva or nasri
        Or
        B. Trade nzog for young

        Thoughts?

I just think young is good option and nzog a waste of money. yaya is more likely to get points than nzog. Option A leaves you with silva/nasri and nzog - silva got nothing last weekend

lol that'd be madness. Verm is the only one nailed on, Koscielny is dodgy and Djourou was okay last year but looked absolutely awful against United. If he finally spends money on that position he has to play him.

Koscielny is way better than Cahill, and suits Arsenal's style better.

Think about it, Wenger values Cahill at about £ 6 million, but didn't hesitate to spend £10 million on Koscielny last summer.

Because Cahill's contract is about to expire, obviously.

Kos is generally quite poor and to say he "suits Arsenal's style" when he seems like he'd rather never have the ball and Cahill is a definitive football playing centre half is ludicrous.

I disagree with all the negative comments re liverpools fixtures, not sure the ar that bad

Wk 4 Stoke away...not the most prolific scorers
Wk 5 spurs away...shocking start, anything could happen between now and then, will concede shedfulll
Wk 6 Wolves home...see Stoke away
            Wk 7 Everton away...see above
            Wk 8 Man U home...use as sub
Wk 9 Norwich home...poor team won't score and will concede
            Wk 10 W.Brom away...see above
Wk 11Swansea home..could get hatful and prob won't concede

I am sure this may not be the consensus but 5.1m for Enrique is a bargains and Suarez WILL score highly

Question: I just made several transfers planning to use my wildcard but made a huge bonehead move and hit confirm transfer instead of play wildcard, costing me 32 points. The wildcard is unlimited transfers in any one week. If I go right back and make another transfer and play the wildcard this time, will I get those points back?

you can make as many changes as you want and then when you hit the wildcard any points accrued will be wiped off. you can also hit the wildcard now and keep transferring at no cost.

              Fixtures

              Van Persie- SWA,bla,BOL,tot,SUN,STK,che,WBA,nor,FUL

              Rooney- bol,CHE,stk,NOR,liv,MCY,eve,SUN,swa,NEW

Van Persie should outscore the jammy little git(in thse fixtures anway), but the way the season has went thus far I wouldn't count on it.

It's the SWA, bla, BOL that interests me when rooney plays bol, CHE, stk.

It really is bloody hard not to get tempted by fixtures, no matter how many times it burns you.

True, it seems tempting this season to pick form over fixtures, but I believe the statistics show that going with fixtures rewards you better. That is unless you pick Torres!

Good fixtures plus good form is preferable to both obviously.
