It was a case of anything you can do, we can do better yesterday, as Man City’s outstanding win at Spurs quickly overshadowed by the subsequent events at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney and Edin Dzeko both continue to look impossible in terms of Fantasy selection, while Ashley Young’s displays keep Nani firmly in his shadow. Samir Nasri had a dream debut for Man City, while elsewhere, Newcastle finally concede, thanks to a late consolation from Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. Here’s the Scout Notes on one of the most extraordinary days in Premier League history:

Rampant United
Wayne Rooney’s brilliant start to the season shows no sign of abating, while Ashley Young’s integration into the United XI has been seamlessly exhilarating. The pair grabbed five goals and four assists between them and tore Arsenal to pieces with a show of attacking brilliance- even with the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand sidelined by injury, the home side’s superiority was overwhelming. Anderson and Tom Cleverley continue to excel in midfield, surely banishing any thoughts of a move for Wesley Sneijder once and for all.

Sir Alex Ferguson done well to downplay his delight at the 8-2 demoliton:

“We’ve had a couple of big results against them in the past, but when you see Arsenal’s team like that, we do expect to score goals. It was a funny game, a strange result but we can only do our jobs and I think the players kept it professional that way and did their best. We’re showing great energy at the moment and great enjoyment in our game, and that’s important.”

Gunners Torn to Pieces
Arsene Wenger’s selection problems were well-documented in the lead-up to yesterday’s game. Francis Coquelin was handed a start in defensive midfield for the Gunners and both Thomas Vermaelan and Bacary Sagna missed out at the back as the visitors deficiencies were ruthlessly exposed by an almost-cruel United.

Carl Jenkinson’s sending off means Arsenal have had a player red carded in all three of their games so far and further adds to Wenger’s woes. The Gunners boss admitted he was hurt by the defeat and insisted he will endeavour to boost the ranks before the end of August:

I am very open if we can find the right players. We have the money to sign players. If we find players who can strengthen our team then we will do it. But I am not the only one to work on the case, we have 20 people who are working on that. If we do not do it, it is because we don’t find them.

Spurs Hammered at Home
The rumoured arrival of Scott Parker at can’t come soon enough for Harry Redknapp. Yesterday’s game saw Niko Krancjar partner Luka Modric in central midfield and the home side’s lack of a naturally defensive-minded player in the middle of the park was exposed by a ruthless Man City. The corresponding fixture ended 0-0 last season but the 5-1 result reflected Tottenham’s lack of strength in depth as much as it showcased City’s array of attacking talents.

To add to Redknapp’s woes, Krancjar and Aaron Lennon both picked up groin injuries, while Rafael Van der Vart’s troublesome hamstring problems again played up. The Spurs boss is intent in adding more than just Parker to the ranks before Wednesday’s deadline:

“The place needs a little bit of a lift now, and I’ve told that to the chairman. I feel we have to freshen the place up a bit. We’ll get one or two more in.”

Nasri City’s Chief Creator at Spurs
Man City’s hammering of Tottenham saw Edin Dzeko pick up the plaudits, of course, for his four goal haul in the 5-1 win. Roberto Mancini praised the forward post-match:

“I was always sure that Dzeko would score a lot of goals for us. He always scored for Wolfsburg in everything that he played for. He was perfect, he was incredible.”

The performance of Samir Nasri was also exceptional- the Frenchman picked up three assists at White Hart Lane- incredibly, he had 1 assist over the course of the entire 2010/11 league campaign. While Nasri’s creative presence helped City cruise to victory, owners of David Silva will have taken note that the Spaniard failed to have a hand in any of the five goals- a clear sign he’s got competition as a midfield creator.

Yaya Toure once again played deeper, with Nigel De Jong still sidelined with a foot problem, while Roberto Mancini rotated both full-backs from the previous game- Vincent Kompany and Joloen Lescott look the only definite guarantee right now in the back-four.

Hodgson Unhappy
Roy Hodgson fielded the same starting XI for the third game in a row for the home tie with Stoke. The Baggies failed to find the net as the visitors grabbed a contentious last winner, with Hodgson fuming over what he perceived as raised studs by Ryan Shotton on Ben Foster in the challenge that led to Stoke’s goal:

Shotton’s foot was very high and he was leading with his studs. I’d have been happier maybe in some ways if I hadn’t seen such a clear foul…having seen a replay, I’m not very happy either that the goal has been allowed to stand.

West Brom visit Norwich in Gameweek 4 but Hodgson is uncertain over the availability of Peter Odemwingie. The striker suffered a slight recurrence of his ankle problem and wasn’t risked for yesterday’s game.

Pulis Glad of a Rest
Stoke’s trip to the Hawthorns saw Tony Pulis make four changes from Thursday’s Europa League win over FC Thun. Matt Etherington and Roger Huth, both suspended in midweek, returned to the first-team, while Matthew Upson and Thomas Sorenson made way for Jonathan Woodgate and Asmir Begovic respectively.

Yesterday’s game meant the Potters have now played seven games already this season and have chalked up five wins and two draws. Pulis is delighted the fortnight’s break will give his tired squad a chance to recuperate:

The international break couldn’t come at a better time for us after what has been a magnificent effort by the players in the circumstances. It’s been a very tough start to the season for us and we now have the chance to take a breath and get one or two players back from injury.

Pardew Hails Best
Alan Pardew’s side continued their winning ways with the 2-1 defeat of Fulham at St James’ Park. After last week’s 4-2-3-1 at Sunderland, Pardew went with a 4-4-2 yesterday- Demba Ba was once again benched, as Peter Lovenkrands joined Leon Best up front. In his first Premier League start of the season, the latter grabbed a double and earned the praise of his manager as the Magpies made it seven points from a possible nine:

I never really worry about his confidence. He kind of has that in abundance, which is not a bad thing for a footballer. I have known him for a long, long time and come up against him a couple of times and for me, he has never really had a run where he has said, ‘I’m the man’. He will get an opportunity now and he needs to prove it. He still needs to improve in some areas, but he was great today, especially in the second half.

Fulham not Firing
Martin Jol’s Fulham continue to struggle. It’s clear Fulham’s early start to the season is having a major effect on Jol’s first-team selection, with so regulars already sidelined with knocks. Clint Dempsey played up front again, with injuries to the likes of Bobby Zamora limiting the Cottagers options and the American grabbed a late consolation to breach the top-flight’s last remaining perfect defensive record.

Aaron Hughes returned to central defence, with Philipp Senderos benched, and John Arne Riise’s leg injury allowed Matthew Briggs a start at left-back. Steve Sidwell started in central midfield, with Pajtim Kasami playing on the left wing. Jol refuses to blame his side’s fixture schedule, though:

At times the freshness and sharpness was missing, but we can’t blame our involvement in the UEFA Europa League. We are a good team and we were on top of them today. We need to realise that when we have the ball we need to keep it. The result should have been better. We are creating chances but they are just not going in for us right now – that is an issue. The difference today was that they [Newcastle] took theirs.

Has anybody got any thoughts on how i could improve the following players?

    Sinclair, Moses & Tiote...

I have two free transfers and dont want to tinker with the rest of my team. No extra money in the bank!

    Dzeko and Walcott

Worth a hit? I dont want either torres or sinclair in my team and i'm guessing the points i get from dzeko and walcott over the next 3 weeks will be higher than the ones from torres and sinclair by 4 points

Could easily be done without the hit. Remember if you take it that it basically wipes off any goal that Walcott might score. Swansea have been keeping it tight and Arsenal, well... I'd do the urgent one: Torres to Dzeko, and wait for Theo, who I suspect will be a frustrating player to own.

None: I've done Torres to Dzeko. Only had one. I think I'll stick it out. Rooney has really tough fixtures - although just that thinking has screwed me over the last few weeks. Probably better for me to gamble that his returns go down.

I think your team is solid, having got rid of torres I would ride the current storm out. Sess has been very unlucky, Nani will not go from Fantasy champ to Fantasy chop overnight be patient.Methinks Nzog is a problem, not because he is not a great fantasy player but because of his conservative manager and the fact that he is being played wide on the right. The villans are looking pants atm, there is just so little freedom in their play, I cannot believe how conservative they were at home against a newly promoted team bleuurgghh.

I feel your pain but see if you can work him in over a few gameweeks if the form continues. There is nothing worse than watching from the sidelines while somebody tears it up and you cannot get them in immediately. That said rooney was lucky to get anything vs spurs.

Won't be able to work him in over a few weeks. It's too tricky, too many transfers, and too tight on the budget. Think I've made a decision to keep the wildcard and work Hernandez in over a few weeks, hoping he starts to steal Rooney points. This way, if I'm right, I start getting my own back on the Rooney owners.

      Probably not pal. Just do:

      Nani -> Walcott
      Torres -> Rooney

You have Silva so Dzeko will keep for now, City could rotate against Wigan. How many transfers do you have? Any money in the bank?

Jesus, this is very sensible and I've already done Torres to Dzeko... Not sure about Theo but not having Rooney is killing me and I may have made another bad decision. With this in mind, would you wildcard to get Rooney too? as in the team above.

That's your call mate, i've wildcarded, regretted it at first but happy with my decision now. Hopefully catch some price rises and see what transfers occur. Strangely, my wildcard team might not have Rooney in it! Looking at Nasri, Mata, Walcott, Suarez, Dzeko, Chica.

Hmm, I've been looking at Chica too. And he's someone I can work into my team over a few weeks, saving the wildcard. That's the right move. Thanks for your help. Here's to hoping Chica hoovers Rooney's points, and all the suckers stay faithful to Wayne.

Maybe so, but there must be a reason why he was never a regular at Liverpool or Chelsea. He's certainly not good enough to fill some of the void left by Cesc & Nasri. We may aswell enquire about SWP and Joe Cole!

he has 7 points from 3 games against the promoted teams. when is he ever going to be in your starting 11?
and why spend 1m more on a guy who's never going to come anywhere near the first 11?

Gave him 3 games vs promoted teams and got a total of 7pts. Great!
Next 3 fixtures: Man City, Everton & Spurs, no thanks.

At £5M, he may just stay on my bench.

I was at the Villa game and have to agree. He's one of those strikers who is rarely in games though...he just finds the critical moments more often than mot. Over the course of the season hw will bag his fair share and has better bonus potential now. I'd keep the faith given the fixtures coming up

I mean the way they play football. Off all the styles in the Premiership, Swansea's is the style Wenger knows best. For a start, they're tiny and Arsenal struggle more in physical games.

What are you on? Arsenal struggled against lesser opposition last season. Swansea are lesser.

If you wana put walcott and RVP in your team gopher it. I guarantee itl be a mistake. I'm keeping clear until RVP has someone decent to play alongside.

Arsenal could turn rampant on them no doubt but the results warn that is far off the mark.

With everyone being told to shove rvp or walcott in their team they have to get the full background. Not just random guessing.

You do understand that not all 'lesser' teams play the same way, don't you? Arsenal do well against average ('lesser') teams that try to knock it round a bit. I fully expect Arsenal to bounce back with a comfortable victory. Doesn't suddenly make them a good team, however.

We'll see what happens but if they win it will be 2.0 at best and not the battering that most are predicting. Arsenal are technically more sound but swansea are hard to breakdown and had the best defence in the championship. Doesnt make them invincible in our leage but they seem more than capable of holding their own. I will be staying clear of arsenal players till they have some morehalf decent players. Benayoun would do.

in the championship last season they had a great defence at home but achieved a negative goal difference away. says it all really.

The best home defence in the Championship. They conceded more than Norwich away from home last season, for example, and I wouldn't exactly say Norwich are ones to look out for defensively.

Swansea are a (relatively) strong home team, not so strong away.

If you don't want to load up on Arsenal, don't.

Well then we are at a pass. One of the poorest teams in the prem at home with a depleated squad vs swansea with one of the worst defensive records away. See how it goes but i only see arsenal gettin 2 max...which when you have alternatives like rooney, aguero, suarez, nasri, mata etc will not cut the mustard.

If you have faith then well done. Not for me and i'm sure many will agree.

Yep. It's a patience thing. Dzeko may play poorly for Bosnia, someone may score 2 for their country and create a bandwagon. Others may get injured.

Gargamel, what is your take on Silva vs Nasri and Nani vs Young fantasy wise? You getting anyone of them?

      Evening.

Yes I'm almost certain I'll buy Nasri unless he's injured or something. He's still cheaper than Silva and I think he edges it for me potential wise too. More direct.

Will probably try to go without Young/Nani for some longer. If I had one of them I'd be happy though. Would not swap if I had Nani. He's been unlucky (and unsharp) and Young has been lucky this far. Would stick with Nani until he started to be rotated at least.

I might swap Silva for Nasri next game week, he will be 9.7 so can do straight swap with Nasri (who will be on 9.6 most likely).

Question though, since I have Nani.

Nani is naturally a right-winger, that can be utilised on the left (like when Valencia plays)?. But Young always plays on the left, so isn't Nani the one who is likely to be rotated? Young also on corners and free kicks.

I watched the highlights of Man C again, and Silva found himself in two or three scoring positions where Friedel pulled off good saves. He's not finished as a fantasy force yet.

Yes, he was very very good in that game. Just that Nasri played a more advanced role (which naturally is great fantasy wise). Although I assume Silva is guaranteed more starts considering his role.

Yep, I think Nani is much more likely to be the one making way for Valencia too. That speaks for doing the swap, and the prices also do. Nani will drop and Young will rise before the next deadline.

Over the course of the season I don't think Young will outscore Nani by much still.

Bit tricky that, for a Nani owner. You're not wildcarding are you?

So Young it is then. Nani hat-trick next week coming up!

I wildcarded last week 🙂 Have never been any good with my WC's so I thought what the heck, lets get on the price rise train and get some good value while cleaning up my early mess.

Playing the wildcard is like getting a huge burden lifted off your shoulders. It makes me nervous still having it this far into the season.

It feels great! I am even doing a -4 pointer this week...

I remember two seasons ago our mini-league leader used his WC just because he hadn't used (and felt he had to). Did some awful transfers, he would never have done otherwise, and ending up losing.

Who is the best cheap defender 4.5 or under to bring in? Thinking Ward, Simpson or wes brown but edging toward Ward atm.

Need to upgrade N.Dyer or Moses, who to bring in?

    Thinking Petrov, Brunt or Obertan

I am away for 8 weeks. Have to leave a team run til GW 10.

    Wrong decision on bench??
If could do one transfer, who would it be?

    Given
    Bosingwa - Baines - Lescott
    Yaya - Mata - Sinclair - Sessegnon
    Dzeko - Long - Rooney (c)

Subs: Hilario - Enrique - Simpson - Ferguson.

    Thanks

Look at Baines' fixtures after GW6, then get rid of him.
Also Hilario is pointless since he will no longer play

N'zog i'd say. He's playing too deep and hasn't been a threat at all.
      Timmy's always good going forward.

How much money you got to upgrade?

I got 3.5 million in the bank. Apparently NZog had 7 shots at the weekend, but I'm starting to think that he's like the abusive spouse that loves you really....

TBH I've got so much cash I mahy well get rid of the pair of them.

I was at the villa game and it isnt correct to say hes playing deep. he is playing on the right flank and running well with the ball but his shooting-other than one effort-seemed a little wild. he's a class act though and he'll come good i suspect. isnt really knitting into the villa side atm tho. he'll find his feet

He'd be a much better shout if part of the front three, so while i stand corrected, for me he's too deep to merit the cost considering his shooting accuracy of late. They've good enough fixtures to prove me wrong though.

Have my cake and eat it so to speak !

Boyata worth a look at Bolton?

Should get first team action and only 4.0.

Fixtures are shocking until GW8, so should give some time to make a call on that front. Could be a good replacement for Simpson once Newcastles good run of fixtures comes to an end.

was looking for answer for this this morning.. if you make changes now and take a points hit but play your WC later on in GW then the points are reinstated?

Is the evening time consensus that yes this is the case?
