Newcastle have this evening confirmed the capture of Italian international left-back Davide Santon from Inter for an undisclosed fee.

The 20 year-old arrives at St James’ Park on a five-year deal and has immediately been handed the Magpies’ number three shirt.

For Fantasy Managers, that should immediately ring alarm bells. Santon’s arrival presents a significant threat to Ryan Taylor’s position at left-back having seen the former Wigan man establish himself as an early season favourite.

Taylor scored the winning goal in the North East derby win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in Gameweek two and, with 12% ownership (280,000+ owners) in the Fantasy Premier League game, had enjoyed a 0.2 price increase from his initial 4.0 valuation.

Those who were tempted by Taylor’s early season form may have hoped that their man would be set for a sustained run in the starting lineup. Indeed, following his winner at Sunderland, Alan Pardew had suggested that it would be difficult to dislodge Taylor from his starting berth..

“We are trying to bring a left-back in and he is going to have to be a good one to take Ryan out of the team”

But the reality is that Taylor is a right-footed player filling in at left-back – a real short term prospect. Santon, despite being equipped to play either side of defence, has been bought to replace Jose Enrique and Taylor now faces the prospect of dropping to the bench, unless Pardew can find a role in midfield for the set-piece specialist, or consider dropping established starter Danny Simpson on the right.

Santon could now be set to make his debut for the Magpies in what promises to be a tempestuous affair as Newcastle travel to face QPR and Joey Barton on Monday September 12. The new Italian recruit could, theoretically, be facing Barton one-on-one in that fixture – a factor that may convince Pardew to give Santon more time to settle, persevering with Taylor for one more run-out.

One possible knock-on from Taylor’s relegation to the bench, French midfielder Youha Cabaye, who has made an encouraging start to his career at St James’, could now be set for a more prominent role at set-pieces and in particular, direct free-kicks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I remember when he was tipped to be huge back when Zdneck Zeman was starting him at Leece as a 16 year-old. Didn't quite work out.

                Yes, precisely!

Speaking about American Fulham players there was also a short lived Carlos Bocanegra wagon, when he had a smashing December scoring against Chelsea and some other team.

For some reason I always loved both McBride and Bocanegra.

Yeah was 4th in the Daily Mail one the season Blackburn won the league.

It was great, if a bit of a pain in the arse with posting off your side and then worrying whether it got there or not.

Won piss all though, prizes only went to top three.

If I remember rightly there was transfer windows, about four a season I think. Bit of a while ago now though so can only remember bits and bobs. I had Shearer, Sutton, and Tim Flowers from Blackburn and Jason Euell did well for me too.
You could have Scottish players so loading up on Celtic and Rangers was pretty good. 🙂

I played the Telegraph (I think) one for a few years from the age of about 10 or so (a whole 14 years ago) and it was really good.

I used to look forward to the paper where they'd put all the prices in and I'd sit there trying to plan a team (I was a sad bastard back then too 😉 ). I remember going to the shop with my mother to get the paper every Wednesday as that had the points for the week and I'd add mine up as soon as I got home. Ah, nostalgia, t'was good stuff indeed.

        Why Hart and Vorm?

Vorm and Begovic if I was wildcarding. Vorm is fantasy gold. And going up in price tonight too.

You genuinely don't need to spend more than £5.0 on Vorm cos you can play him at home every week. Guy will get save points even when he concedes.

Downgrade Hart and upgrade either N'Zog or Lita.

Arsneal have some very good games coming up and despite losing heavily at the weekend if we strengthen in the right areas you'd be a foot to overlook our players.

Especially now this has happened. Mertesacker!! How much you reckon he'll be?

Nigel and RVP are really good friends. I don't think anyone likes Sneijder though. VDV used to, but that was before he started considering himself king of the world.

Premier League clubs' attempts to sign Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cissé are looking increasingly unlikely to succeed. Dirk Dufner, sporting director of Cissé's German club SC Freiburg, said within the last hour that "the issue is closed".

According to German TV station ZDF, Newcastle offered €10 million earlier today, which fell short of Cissé's German club SC Freiburg's evaluation of €15 million. Newcastle and the player's advisors also had very different ideas as to the terms of his contract.

No official bid has yet been made by Sunderland, who were earlier reported as being prepared to meet Freiburg's asking price. If Sunderland aren't successful, I believe that VfL Wolfsburg's Patrick Helmes is their preferred (and much cheaper) back-up option. They'll need more strikers if, as rumoured, Asamoah Gyan moves to Galatasaray or Trabzonspor at a loss.

While this may all seem to be a classic attempt by Freiburg to force EPL clubs to raise their bids, this really isn't the case - Freiburg are desperate to keep Cissé as he's their only source of goals. Without Cissé, the Bundesliga's second-top goalscorer last season with 22 goals, they would be looking at a relegation fight this season.

Did I read right that Arsenal are going in for Dempsey for around £12m? Doesn't seem very.. Wenger like. Also seems a fair bit to pay for a 28 year old going into the tail-end of his career.

Oh and haha @ the people getting upset at the suggestion that Santon will displace Ryan Taylor and that Mark's trying to influence people's transfers. They've been linked with left backs since before Enrqiue left so it was always going to happen. Buying Taylor unless you're on a WC looking for short term money was blatantly short sighted.
