Newcastle have this evening confirmed the capture of Italian international left-back Davide Santon from Inter for an undisclosed fee.

The 20 year-old arrives at St James’ Park on a five-year deal and has immediately been handed the Magpies’ number three shirt.

For Fantasy Managers, that should immediately ring alarm bells. Santon’s arrival presents a significant threat to Ryan Taylor’s position at left-back having seen the former Wigan man establish himself as an early season favourite.

Taylor scored the winning goal in the North East derby win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in Gameweek two and, with 12% ownership (280,000+ owners) in the Fantasy Premier League game, had enjoyed a 0.2 price increase from his initial 4.0 valuation.

Those who were tempted by Taylor’s early season form may have hoped that their man would be set for a sustained run in the starting lineup. Indeed, following his winner at Sunderland, Alan Pardew had suggested that it would be difficult to dislodge Taylor from his starting berth..

“We are trying to bring a left-back in and he is going to have to be a good one to take Ryan out of the teamâ€

But the reality is that Taylor is a right-footed player filling in at left-back – a real short term prospect. Santon, despite being equipped to play either side of defence, has been bought to replace Jose Enrique and Taylor now faces the prospect of dropping to the bench, unless Pardew can find a role in midfield for the set-piece specialist, or consider dropping established starter Danny Simpson on the right.

Santon could now be set to make his debut for the Magpies in what promises to be a tempestuous affair as Newcastle travel to face QPR and Joey Barton on Monday September 12. The new Italian recruit could, theoretically, be facing Barton one-on-one in that fixture – a factor that may convince Pardew to give Santon more time to settle, persevering with Taylor for one more run-out.

One possible knock-on from Taylor’s relegation to the bench, French midfielder Youha Cabaye, who has made an encouraging start to his career at St James’, could now be set for a more prominent role at set-pieces and in particular, direct free-kicks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is Mertesacker to Arsenal done? Good signing if true. It's true he lumbers, but I still think he's got what it takes for the Prem. He's only like 26, got around 75 caps for Germany I think. Impressive at his age. He needs a quicker partner alongside, but he's a bit of a beast in the air at both ends. Also, with park Chu Young, I think the reason he was so cheap is because he hasn't yet completed his two years' national service for South Korea. He's 26 and has to have 2 years before he's 30. Crafty player though.

I have no idea if they have National Service in South Korea but he'll get out of it. Defection is transferring one's allegience to another country, thus hegating one's obligations to the first country.... or something 😉

I know what it is, but I wondered how he'd get out of it. Most do it at 19. I know UTD's Park did it. He probably will find a way, as 'global ambassador's' for Korea can become exempt. However, it is a possibility he will have to do it.

Mertesacker is a good player and will improve Arsenal's defense.

Bargain at that price really. Cahill/Dann 20M Mertesacker 8M. you really do pay for English players.

Averages about 3 goals every 11 games too, not too shabby.

No one is going to pay 20m for Cahill or Dann. If they move, it'll be 10m max for both. Judging by the weekend's performance, I'd improve Arsenal's defence. Not to be disparaging to the big teuton, he's a good player.

Mertesacker isn't much of a player though. Big huge lug of a centre half but he's quite slow. Cahill can actually pass a ball and would've fitted Arsenal nicely imo.

It's a non-valuation. they're essentially saying "activate his release clause or we'll run his deal down."

Still, what kind of mug would pay that much for Cahill?

Hands up those who never even checked Dzeko's price let alone considered him at the start of the season

    *holds hand up*

Always fascinating when a player emerges just when you least expect it. There are similarities with Berb, but he had been proven as a quality prem player previously. The thing I like about Dzeko is his attitude. I can see him picking up points even when he's not playing well. I even considered Bolton players before the start of the season but never Dzeko.

Anyway, I just wanted to confer with people that Brunt is still on pens. I believe he scored two in the same game v Lpool if I remember rightly? I had him and Odem for months last season up until West Brom's DGW and they barely did anything. Got rid and they came alive in the last few games of the season.

He's a bit like Baines, is rated highly because of attacking. He scored a few goals when he first turned up and suddenly that made him a great defender.

That being said, I do think he's good, just maybe a bit overrated due to goals.

I'm in the minority who don't severely dislike Cole amongst Liverpool fans. Yes, he's on huge wages, but you can't blame the lad for taking one last shot at a huge contract, if we were the only one's offering it. He has however, been unbelievably ineffectual. I mean, there's out of form then there's what he's produced in a red shirt.

It seems like an okay article (I'll be honest, I'd prefer it on a non lfc dedicated site because they're obviously going to try to praise themselves - not saying they're wrong), but did Connor Wickham really price himself out of joining Liverpool? Really? I don't believe that.

Of course, it's hugely biased, but you've got to roll with the optimism around the club at the moment. With Wickham, I've the feeling Bruce may have played us. We didn't want to sign him 'til we were shot of N'gog. SUnderland maintained a facade of interest until they'd tied up Wickham. I've no idea how we valued him to be honest.

Who knows? Let's face it, Aguero would have gone to anyone who could afford him as long as they were in a decent league. The Champions League wasn't that much of a factor as he spoke with Juve until it became apparent they wouldn't pay his wages. He cost £40m and 250k a week in wages. That's more than £50m by the end of his first season. Liverpool aren't able to pay that, in fact no clubs are. (Billionaire toy clubs the exception.)

oh of course, they'd struggle to attract an aguero. carroll's biggest issue imo is suarez. >£10mil cheaper (not sure what his wages are in comparison (see i did read it all 😉 ) and by the looks of it always set to be the star of that duo. all of this however is nothing to do with carroll himself so no issue with the player, just his price

I'd also like to try and address the Sky sports balls that Henderson cost £20m. It's even got managers believing it! (Coyle's post game interview). He was £13m up front, with add ons that will come to a further £3m should he fulfill the criteria.

But none of this fits in with the stuff they implemented with the Red Sox.

They paid inflated prices for all those players, mainly because they were British. Home-grown rules aren't that strict to bump up prices too much, and as I pointed out earlier today, by PL proven is an overrated trait. If your scouting network is good enough, you can easily find player who can adapt quickly.

The thing about Downing is interesting, because crossing isn't a particularly effective way of scoring. I think it's somewhere between 1 in 15 and 1 in 20 crosses are converted into goals.

Suarez was a more economic signing - young and a nationality that wasn't over valued.

The kind of stuff that would fit into JW Henry's original formula would be more in line with Wenger's early works with Arsenal.

They are def implementing the reduction of ridiculous wages for older players who were bought for low transfer fees or for free (and therefore were deemed bargains)

Offloading Degen/ Cole/ Jovanivic/ Kyrgiakos/ Konchesky etc. who were left over from the Hodgson debacle all make good sense

      those stats don't work.

112 over 5 years divided into 22 mil/year is fine, but then that number will escalate with subsequent purchases over the next few years, and as the players brought in are being touted as first teamers, then it's unlikely they'll be sold.

so if next season you buy playerX at 20 mil and a 4 year (so ends at the same time as this year's 5 year contracts) contract at 5 mil/year, then you can add 10 million/year to the 22, making it 32. and i find it highly unlikely that lfc will slash 10 mil/year given the clearout they've done this year.

      bs article.

Right, the basic idea is that any undrafted player is a free agent (FA). The person who is last to pick in the draft (that is another thing, we are gonna have to decide who gets what position in the draft as that is quite important) gets the default first pick of the FA's in the first week and the first to draft gets last pick etc. Until he does pick someone he will always have first choice but everyone else can declare their top3 say and then assuming no one else wants him you get that player (and drop one you already own). If 2 people want the same player the one who was last to draft gets him. Once you've made a trabsfer you go to the back on the queue.

We'd have to say only 1 transfer a week max i think otherwise you start getting issues with 4 point deductions on FPL and that just makes things confusing. Or should i say MORE confusing!!

Shouldn't it just be a draft system.

YOu then make your team on FPL. Still choosing captain etc.

Then maybe have further drafts down the line, say every 4 weeks or something. That way it's easier to keep track of stuff.

Then in the monthly drafts the person who selected last is first in this draft, but it they don't want to make a transfer then they lose it until the next draft.

Also that would mean we could do 2 transfers every 4 weeks.

Yeah maybe but it just means getting everyone in the same place again every month and i just don't think it's realistic. It's easy enough for people to pick 3 players each week they'd like to get and they'd get one of them.

If not just say you can only transfer out a player when he is flaged as injured on FPL

Can use the forums for transfers as MF said on last page. You'd have 7 days to make your decision, and all members of the league would have to do it in that week. Of course the person who had first pick probably shouldn't take too long otherwise we might get stuck 🙂

Well if we did it like that it would be a matter of someone sorting it out every week.

So for exaple everyone would email me the top 3 FA's they would like to bring in and the player they want to transfer out (only 1 transfer per week max and NO carry over). The person who has the first FA pick (the guy who was last to draft) will automatically get his first choice of FA. If the next guy due to pick had the same first choice as the guy who's already picked it goes to his second choice. Next person picks and so on.

If you're low down the FA priority list then it would probably not be a good idea to pick popular FA's as you probably won't get them. Although i guess there would be plenty of conversation about it on here so it would be obvious.

The only problem with that is

say I'm first and Garg is second to pick.

I have Rooney top of my list and so does Garg, but I'm getting rid of RVP to get him. Surely everyone below me on the picking list needs to know that as they may want RVP.

That would be too much work for that person (in this example you) I think. It could very well be that we used this system and the reversed draft list, BUT only for injured/banned players?

But players like that will NEVER be traded out for a free agent. You'd only be transfering out you're worst 2-3 players out on a cycle to make the most of fixtures. The vast majority of your squad will be there for the season

Yep Garg, i think only flagged players can be taken out is probably best. Use the reverse draft list as the priority order and you go to the back once you've made a change. Pretty simple, we can keep an up-to-date "Priority Free Agent Order" on the forum so people know where they are

If everyone is OK with the fact that it will take long then I think 10 is the perfect number. Definitely no less than 8.

With people taking it in turns to pick I guess it would actually be a good thing to not have too many teams. Otherwise there won't be enough of the semi decent players to choose from. or maybe that will make it more interesting 🙂

The carry-over transfer system would be confusing too.

I'd say either make anyone's second transfer would be at the back of the queue, or just scrap it altogether.

I don't get ya. The FA priority list is just the reverse of the draft list. The guy who is last to draft will always get his choice of free agent when he decided to make a change. He doesn't have to change a player each week. As soon as you do make a transfer you go to last in the queue. Obviously when more than 1 person makes a change they all go to the back of the queue but in the same FA order.

I'm confusing myself.... maybe we should scrap transfers all together unless you get an injury...

Yeah, I get that completely (even if you don't 😀 ).

Basically, if someone decides NOT to make a free transfer on wee (and thus carries over), their second transfer would be below everyone in the queue.

So if person who is 2nd in the queue has two transfers, their first transfer is done second, and their second transfer is done after everyone else's.

It probably won't be that much of a rush I suppose.

I think 1 transfer per week is a bit much for a draft game, unless there's only a few teams and they are regulars. Simply because the person in second has to wait for the person in first, then third for second etc etc

Yep defintely 1 transfer a week maximum, it's just trying to work out a way of deciding who gets the players as their is only 1 of every player! It can't just be a first come first serve or people will be adding the same players to their teams.

I think maybe just stick to a rule that you can only remove a plyer if he is injured. It should cut down transfer dramatically as you're hardly gonna take out Rooney if he's out for a few weeks are you

M'Vila = Beast. As does Sissoko. That guy is Vieria like. From what I've seen he'd be right up Arsene's street. Box to box, can play, aggressive. Maybe too direct for Arsene's liking? Think M'Vila is more pivotal than Hazard though.

In some ways, I'd forgotten how good he really is. Seen some of the Barca clips (of course clips don't show everything) when he's played and he's looked brilliant.

by next may i think views of fabregas will be much different, talked about alongside xavi and iniesta, not below. think how quickly pique blossomed from promising but unproven to world class at barcelona, could easily be fabregas there too (not saying arsenal was wrong for him but barcelona more right for him).

Yes, I stupidly used my wildcard last week, to put just, Bosingwa, Brunt and Jose Enrique, but thinking about it, I think I may just survive; how does this team sound?

    Hart
Bosingwa, Cole, Jose Enrique, Shawcross, Simpson
    Brunt,Young, Silva Taarabt (N'Zogbia)
    Dzeko, Suarez (Lita)

However why bench N'Zogbia at £7.5M? Downgrade him and then upgrade elsewhere.

Good Point, well I used a four point hit so i could gain some rises over the internation break, i did

        Bent -> Dzeko
        Downing -> Young

Should I be regretting this? :/
I'm hopinh to bring Rooney in, the upcoming weeks

It doesn't matter about regretting it, you've done it now.
I would wonder why you're starting Shawcross over N'Zog though... Stoke have Liverpool next, the same Liverpool who could quite easily have been 4-0 up at Bolton in the first 20 minutes...

What do you guys think of Lampard to Walcott for the next 6 weeks as they have extremely good fixtures (but we know what happened last time we did that).

    Rest of Team is:

    Given(Ruddy)
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Hughes, Simpson(Brown)
    Lampard, Silva, Brunt(Moses, Sinclair)
    Rooney, Bent, Holt

This leaves 3 in the bank for changes later in the GW and a chance to upgrade using my other free transfer. Any recommendations?

Hi all, would welcome any opinions on this team as after a rather unpromising start I have used my Wildcard! (alot earlier than I had hoped).

    Vorm/Ruddy
De Laet, R Taylor, Bosingwa, Huth, Gabbidon
Mikel, Adam, Silva, Young, Dyer (Nathan)
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

    Any thoughts?

Don't worry, I used my Wildcard the week before, so don't feel bad,

Good team, seems a bit worrying that you don't have a keeper from a top side though

Kind of want to Keep Huth though, but unfortunately he would be the only one I could really drop for the points/cost.

These are reasonable, good, buys but still just replacing what's gone/going (Bendtner, Clichy, Squillaci) in terms of squad size.

It's the big kahuna that will really matter - the new, highly talented, creative midfielder (or wide man, and change formation giving Theo his time up front as he's been biding his time for) needs to come in.

agree with this. if vermaelen, gibbs and van persie stay fit then these signings add nothing. they'll just help when arsenal get unlucky with injury and silly with suspension

very true, no more 8-2s on the horizon. literally everything that could have gone wrong this weekend did, lots of which was their own doing.
              - finished 4th so had make or break 2nd leg qualifier in hot, sapping udinese wednesday night.
              - lost 6! good centre mid options to sales, injury and suspension. take 6 centre mids away from other sides.
              - vermaelen injured, awful in itself but also robbed the side of the option of either himself or djourou in midfield.
              - sagna ill, shocking timing.
              - the fixture, away at old trafford! the one time you want swansea at home and you get man utd. i honestly think the way chelsea are playing they would have been pumped 4-2 on sunday too

Confused by the price rises at Total FPL vs. FISO Crack The Code.

Total FPL has N. Dyer close to a rise, not Adam. At FISO CTC it's the other way around.

Does anyone here know who to trust?

but if it's the same gameweek, and a player has already hit 50,000 and rised by 0.1, for them to rise again, they have reach double 50,000, which would be 150,000 for them to rise again, you follow?

At least he's got 3 good hauls and a price rise... Hard to replace though. As I've said below though, wouldn't Pereira be for an advanced, left sided role? He's not a very good defender and is one footed.

There last bid was rejected and as far as I'm aware, are yet to come back with another offer. Keep an eye on this though. He's basically a Uruguayan Glen Johnson, but even worse at defending. If he were to play on the left wing he could be class though. Cole is better.

Bosingwa and A Cole? The team is looking Ok but I'd have one, not both. Chelsea really don't look assured enough clean sheets to drop that much on their defence. Who's your second keeper? I would personally downgrade Hart for two cheaper options who rotate well. Also, Lita won't play or score much. 7.5 for N'zogbia is a lot, I'd look elsewhere. Two good big hitters in the middle though, and two up top. I have 3 of your defence also.

Mate Hart and Lita out of that team ASAP. If u must to have City defender go for Kompany/ Lescott instead of Cashley and downgrade Hart. Or if u are big fan of Cashley, I know I am keep him but use the money from Hart elsewhere IMO.
